67 Blankets beat record for charity
‘We did it’ was the resounding cry that went up at the Drakenstein Correctional Services near Paarl on 22 April 2016. “We have broken the Guinness Book of World Records for second time in two years for the biggest crochet blanket in the world,” said an elated Carolyn Steyn, founder of the 67 Blanket for Nelson Mandela Day NPO. Over 10,500 crochet blankets were sewn together to the size of 17,181.06 square metres, over five times more than 67 Blankets’ first world blanket record of 3,377 square metres on 21 April 2015, at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

This year 67 Blankets had to beat India’s world record of an 11,148 square metres blanket, made six months after the first world record. Members of 67 Blankets living in the Far South under the enthusiastic mentorship of Terry Milne, whipped up many squares and blankets for the ‘Wool Cup’ challenge and were there for the final countdown, cold and wet, fingers to the bone, but the weather didn’t stop play. #WeDidIt. The blankets will now be distributed to the needy in each area they were made.

Rein in your budget to qualify for a home loan Having a budget and sticking to it is not easy, especially with the upward pressure of inflation. However, by making the necessary budgeting adjustments, those wishing to purchase a property this year can become eligible for a home loan, says Marlyn Pillay, oobaelite consultant at ooba, South Africa’s biggest bond originator. Below she discusses best budgeting tips to get a foot on the property ladder.
Budgeting tip one: Draw up a monthly budget
Drawing up a budget every month may seem like a chore, but it’s a worthwhile exercise, asserts Pillay. “Not only that, you also need to diligently track your projected spending against your actual spending,” she says. Root out those hidden items that creep into your budget – for instance, take-aways on the weekend or lattes on the way to work. Pillay recommends shopping once a week using a list to avoid over-buying and impulsive purchases.
Budgeting tip two: Get rid of credit card debt
Credit card debt can be crippling and it’s a difficult cycle to break. “Overdrafts are a temporary solution to a cash flow problem,” Pillay says. “Try to identify why you’re going into overdraft every month and then avoid whatever spending is unnecessary.” She suggests speaking to your bank about lowering your overdraft limit. “It’s also a good idea to reduce your spending on retail credit cards, no matter how tempting the loyalty points,” she says.
Budgeting tip three: Shop around for the best deals
Whether it’s your bank charges, your medical aid contribution or your cellphone contract, there are a number of ways to reduce your recurring monthly expenses. “Many people assume that these rates are static, but a phone call to your insurance company saying you’re unhappy with your premium

Your credit score is easily obtainable from a credit bureau and will give you an excellent indication of whether you’re ready for a home loan. “The banks place a great emphasis on this report,” comments Pillay, “which is why you should ask for a copy and make sure that all the information is correct.” Close any accounts that aren’t being used and reduce limits that have high available balances. “If any accounts reflect slow payments, arrear or legal status, attend to it immediately,” urges Pillay. Budgeting tip five: Save up for unexpected homepurchasing expenses By now you should be well on your way to buying your own home. But remember that there are many unexpected expenses involved in the home-
purchasing process. “Watch out for increases in attorney’s fees, home renovation costs and paying for security enhancements like electric fencing,” says Pillay. It’s also worth bearing in mind that many local authorities have been reassessing the value of homes, which means some municipal rates have increased significantly. “By having money in reserve, you’ll be able to afford these unforeseen expenses, easing the pressure on your monthly budget. You’ll be able to enjoy your new home with minimal financial stress,” concludes Pillay. Linda Rall

Winterising your pool

With winter fast approaching , it is now time to winterise your swimming pool. Try and follow these 10 easy steps to help you save money with a problem free pool.

If you are not using a pool cover, always remove as much debris as you can as often as you can, to prevent any staining

2 cups dry chickpeas – (makes 5-6 cups after being soaked overnight) 1 small onion, roughly chopped 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 3-5 cloves garlic 1 1/2 tbsp flour 1 3/4 tsp salt 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1/4 tsp black pepper 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper Pinch of ground cardamom Vegetable oil for deep frying

You will also need Food processor, skillet Servings: 30-34 falafels Let the chickpeas soak in cold water overnight. Drain and rinse them well. Pour them into your food processor along with the other ingredients. Pulse all ingredients together until a rough, coarse meal forms. You want the mixture to hold together, and a more paste-like consistency will help with that... but don’t overprocess, you don’t want it turning into hummus! Once the mixture reaches the desired consistency, pour it out into a bowl and use a fork to stir; this will make the texture more even throughout. Remove any large chickpea chunks that the processor missed. Form falafel mixture into round balls using wet hands or a scoop. I usually use about 2 tbsp of mixture per falafel. Once oil is heated enough in large pot or skillet, deep fry the falafels in batches for about 5-6 till golden brown on both sides. If they brown faster than 5 min, the oil is too hot and they won’t fry through. Serve them with hummus, fresh lettuce & chopped tomato in pita bread. 38

EASY DOES IT Driving to save fuel
There’s no doubt that driving slower is just about the best way to use less fuel but this does not mean that you have to crawl along at a ridiculously low speed. Your driving habits can play a significant role but driving economically under all conditions requires some forethought. The following steps will turn you into an economical driver:
Reduce idling time
Drive off immediately after starting the car in the morning. Do not let it idle for any length of time. Go slow at first, to allow the engine, gearbox and final drive to warm up. Driving off will reduce the amount of time the engine has to inhale the over-rich fuel mixture required for starting and idling.
Stay with the traffic in town
At speeds below 60 km/h the car demands very little energy from the engine but the latter becomes very inefficient. If you slow down too much you will not only be an obstruction but you may also have to change down to a lower gear. A lower gear usually, but not always, means your vehicle will use more fuel.

Anticipate
One of the major differences between a good driver and a bad one is that the former exhibits a far greater degree of anticipation. Passengers become subconsciously aware of this because a bad driver brakes more often, and every time a car slows down some energy is wasted. To get up to cruising speed again requires more energy from the engine than the car would have required to remain at the former cruising speed. If you have to pick up speed do it slowly because the faster you accelerate the more fuel you use.
Cruise at slower speeds
Whenever a car maintains a constant speed on a level road the fact that no acceleration takes place indicates that the engine supplies just enough power to balance the sum of all the frictional forces trying to slow the car down. A higher cruising speed requires more power, because the frictional forces are greater. Air resistance supplies the biggest frictional component, and this increases as the square of the speed, meaning that the resistance at 100 km/h is four times as high it is at 50 km/h!
Think about the load
The load a car carries affects the fuel consumption in different ways, depending on how it is carried: •If the extra mass is inside the vehicle, this increases the total vehicle mass, so that the engine has to work harder to accelerate up to any speed. Driving in traffic or in a hilly country will show an increase in fuel consumption. •An inside load does not affect the air resistance so the fuel consumption will not change significantly when cruising on a level road at a constant speed. •An extra load carried on the roof or in a trailer will affect the fuel consumption in the same way as a load carried inside, but in addition will also increase the air resistance dramatically, so that it is far better to carry a load inside a vehicle than outside.
