Python & the Qunube Tree Based on an African folktale. When a terrible drought leaves all the animals on the brink of starvation, Python’s Qunube tree is the only food that survives. e settled here eight years ago and found the greenery of the dune belt, nestled at the foot of Table Mountain range, a refreshing change from the arid region we had left behind. We’ve always been an outdoorsy family and, consequently, were appreciative of our first appointment with nature. A western leopard toad arrived to claim our fish pond. What excitement that first year was when we had tens of thousands of tadpoles who turned into toadlets right on our doorstep! Inspired by this charming species, the next two years were a busy time for us. Not only did we set about renovating and restoring a rather old and tired house, but we bravely committed to turning our 1950’s style swimming pool into a bio-pool. What happened next, is best described by the famous naturalist, John Muir: ‘I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found was really going in.’ Little did we know that we had unwittingly opened our home to a deeper relationship with the environment around us. Two years down the line, and still far from finished, we are well on the way to being an established wetland ecosystem. Initially, our time was spent adapting conventional pool filtering, installing a UV filter and finding the right balance in the addition of borehole water. Lately, however, we’ve been doing more of the crazy things that keep water loving residents happy. The water spiders needed something solid to attach their webs, migrating toads needed passages to and from the outside world, and smaller birds needed to be able to drink from the
safety of the middle of the pond. Our labours have been amply rewarded in watching the teeming life that feeds into and out of the water. On most evenings, the water surface is alive with insect activity. It is a simple pleasure to sit in the evenings and watch the spiders hard at work on their webs or to see a swallow or bat swoop in for a quick snack. The grey heron or river cormorant are frequent visitors too, each a critical link in the continuous circle of life.” Every year at around springtime, western leopard toads migrate from dry ‘burrows’ in gardens and grasslands to ponds where they form amplexus pairs and lay their eggs. The eggs hatch and toadlets emerge from the water after 10-12 weeks, to find their way to nearby gardens. Toad enthusiasts have been recording this in the Far South Peninsula for 12 years, where possible saving them from being run over on roads. “And then this year (2018), the cherry on top, we had no fewer than five leopard toad females, and many males, visiting our waters to breed! This feeling of elation at a job well done, is short-lived however. We feel saddened by the knowledge that a few years ago the toads were breeding out in the wild, in the natural wetland ponds surrounding Sun Valley. What has changed since then? What appointments have we overlooked or failed to keep that the toads are preferring to stay in our back yards to breed?” Could bio-pools be part of the answer to saving this endangered species? As nature is swallowed up by urban development should we not be including as much nature as we can in our back yards, creating havens for all our creatures: large and beautiful, or small and not-so-beautiful?

KEY House training tips for puppies Getting your pup to ‘go’ where you need them to can be a mammoth task, but we have some tips that may help! • This task can take several weeks. You should have realistic expectations. Mentally prepare for accidents/setbacks. • Provide constant supervision, especially at first. Leashing the dog to yourself is an excellent way to keep track of the times they need to go and to stop accidents as/before they happen. • A consistent eating routine
helps their bodies regulate elimination times. Get to know when they need to go – every three hours, or even every hour. • If you have an accident happen indoors, don’t punish the behaviour, but do clean the area thoroughly with solution to remove smells and the temptation to ‘go’ in the same area.
• Carpet feels soft under their paws and could encourage them to use that spot, so if you’re secluding them in a smaller area, bear this in mind. • Stick to a regular spot for their business outside. When they successfully do use it after you take them there, reward them with lots of affirmation, perhaps even a treat.

Vanilla Cake • 6 extra large or jumbo eggs, at room temperature • 1 ½ cups (375 ml) canola or sunflower oil • 2 cups (500 ml) hot full cream milk • 2 x 600 g Ina Paarman’s Vanilla Cake Mix • ¾ cup (180 ml) round sprinkles
Vanilla Icing • 250 g butter, softened • 2 x 250 g Ina Paarman’s Vanilla Icing Mix • ± ½ cup (125 ml) water • 2 t (10 ml) lemon juice • ¼ cup (60 ml) round sprinkles
Method
Vanilla Cake •P repare an oven pan 34 cm x 25 cm (the standard black oven pan) by lining the bottom with baking paper. The pan is big enough for a double cake mixture. •A djust oven rack to middle position. Preheat oven to 180°C. •B eat eggs and oil together for 30 seconds on high speed until well blended. •A dd hot milk and beat briefly on high speed. •A dd the contents of the packs
and gently mix in by hand with a spatula. Mix only until combined. It is important not to overmix. The mixture will be fairly soft and runny. • Scrape mixture into prepared pan and level out the middle. • Place the pan in the oven and bake for 35 – 40 minutes. • The cake is done when a thinbladed knife inserted into the centre comes out clean or cake pulls away slightly from the sides of the pan. • Cool in the pan for 10 minutes
and then turn out on a cooling rack. Icing • Make up the two packs of Vanilla Icing in one go according to pack instructions. • Spread or pipe the icing over the cake. • Shower cake with sprinkles. To Serve • Cut the cake into 5 cm squares. • This cake will freeze well with icing.

Cape Point Vineyards Community Market A must visit event for Peninsula locals, after-work city folk and travellers and tourists alike. This weekly pop up market takes place at the Cape Point Vineyards Restaurant and Function Venue; an idyllic lakeside setting overlooking stunningly scenic vineyards, Noordhoek’s mountain range and the nearby sea. This vibrant market, boasts a selection of the country’s most iconic food vendors such as Peter Geoffe Wood’s Kitchen Cowboys, and the Lamb Man, as well as rising stars such as Sunshine Food’s Vegan burgers and Something Simple’s Vegan Sushi – all of course washed down with Cape Point Vineyards’ award winning wine collection alongside a variety of craft beer.
