Care Champ
Looters
Fish Hoek Home Nursing
Melomed Tokai Hospital
At Care Champ we believe that enabling elder or disabled people to stay in their own home is a combination between providing excellent patient care and the tools necessary to do so. We offer access to the very best caregivers and companions throughout South Africa. All our Champs are qualified, vetted, insured and supported by our nursing team. Expect weekly care reports, rate your Champ(s) & leave all the admin to us. Our back office is always available for any questions or needs you might have. Services start from R49/ hour. In our online shop you can buy or rent an array of different mobility aids and homecare furniture that will assist you or your loved one to enhance quality of life.
Looters Warehouse is a friendly, family grocery clearance store. Top name brands at massively reduced prices. We stand behind all our products as we have tried and tested all of our products ourselves before offering them to you our customers. My name is Luan, proud owner of Looters, your friendly grocery clearance warehouse in Retreat. Like most parents, I grew tired of the escalating food costs, so tired in fact, that I decided to do something about it. It turns out that grocery clearance is a multi-billion dollar industry in the States & UK, and it has been for many years. I want to share with you what I have learned about food date stamps and what they actually mean. This will mean that you too can save lots of money. See, retailers cannot charge the same price for food which is just on or past its Best Before date, and the shelf stable food in those cans never goes bad. It’s not illegal to sell products past their Best Before Date/Sell By date. You can become a Saving Ninja too! Eat the best for less. Visit our Facebook page and Like us, see where we are and what we offer, then come and visit, we guarantee our food. Pensioners discount is offered EVERYDAY of the week. (T&C’s apply)
Fish Hoek Home Nursing Services Trust has been operating since 1991. We are a unique non-profit organisation committed to providing holistic home-based care to your family. We provides 24hour nursing care in the privacy of your own home. Enjoy peace of mind from knowing that a loved one is being looked after by trained, professional, and caring staff from FHHNS. We understand the importance of living in one’s own home and we are more than prepared to help maintain our client’s independence and comfort whilst living at home. We take on the care and responsibility that you would like to provide yourself. Our care workers and qualified nursing sisters, ensure their skill sets and techniques are regularly adapted to ensure you only receive the best nursing care available. But our services don’t stop there, we’ll even help you with light housekeeping, cooking, and assisting you with your medical aid. All our services are there to ensure that you or your loved ones receive the best possible care, physically, mentally and emotionally.
The hospital is situated on the corner of Main and Keysers Roads in Tokai with ease-of access and ample parking. It has operating theatres, a dedicated obstetric theatre and has introduced the first cardiac intervention unit to the southern suburbs with a state-of-the-art catheterisation laboratory (cath lab) that caters for cardio-, neuro- and vascular procedures and interventions. The hospital has a dedicated 24-hr emergency unit with a dedicated, undercover entrance for ambulances. Patients have easy access to the renal via the hospital reception which is wheelchair friendly, while the oncology unit, is designed to be spacious and provide relaxing and therapeutic views of the Cape Peninsula for patients undergoing therapy. In addition, the hospital has a Clinical Haematology unit which includes stem cell transplant and harvesting service. The surgical experts at Melomed Tokai includes disciplines such as major Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, ENT Surgery, Ophthalmology, Maxillo-facial, general and vascular surgery. In addition, Melomed Tokai houses 30 permanent resident specialists who provide access to a broad range of medical services.

RETIREMENT SPECIAL
THE GOLDEN YEARS
Remember: Always consult your own legal, tax or investment advisor before making any investment/tax/ estate/financial planning considerations or decisions. www.thebalance.com
Ways to be happy in your Golden Years! Seek out new experiences & enjoy the opportunities that you never had time to pursue before.
Y
ou don’t have to be rich to have the retirement of your dreams. What you do need is the proper groundwork so that you can do the things that make you happiest. 1 Go someplace Some of the strongest survey data shows that happy retirees absolutely love to vacation. In fact, the happy group of retirees vacation nearly 70% more than the
unhappy group of retirees. It makes sense – after all, who doesn’t love vacations? Get yourself to the point financially where you can take more of them. 2 Help somebody The happiest retirees are three times more likely to volunteer. In fact, it’s the number one core pursuit for happy retirees. Socialising, giving back, making a difference – it’s easy to see why they like it.
Tulbach
House
Tulbach House was founded in 2012 by Gwen Fourie and currently houses 28 elderly people. Most of which are Alzheimer's patients that need special care, love and understanding. SERVICES WE OFFER: • 24hr nursing care • Specialising in Alzheimer & Parkinson's • Recovery from stroke & operations • Caring for the elderly All of this in a homely atmosphere
Contact: Brenda 076 890 5329 info@tulbachhouse.co.za www.tulbachhouse.co.za 3 Get out The happy retirees, for the most part, select activities that suggest they are highly social and enjoy being around other people. They love to give and explore. Interaction with others is paramount. 4 Be with people This one is so important it’s actually linked to life expectancy. Socialising is one of the most important contributing factors to people living long lives.

Gardening with seniors
Garden
At any age, gardening is one of the best activities we can do outdoors. It stimulates all the senses, awakens our connection with nature and with our companions, and rewards us with fresh flowers and nutritious fruits and vegetables. With courtesy from www.agingcare.com
G
ardening is also an excellent way for aging bodies to get a moderate-intensity aerobic workout, shed calories and stay flexible. That’s one reason why gardening remains popular well into their golden years. Still, there’s no question that bending, lifting, kneeling, squatting, weeding and pruning – not to mention dealing with the sun, heat and bugs – all become more challenging as we grow older. Fortunately, there are ways to cope. It’s all about emphasising a senior’s abilities and accommodating their limitations. Sometimes a little bit of creativity can go a long way. Try these expert tips to help aging gardeners remain active and involved with their plants. Tips for making a garden senior friendly •R eassess the garden with the goal of lowering its overall maintenance. Wherever possible, remove lawn and replace it with attractive groundcovers, mulched beds, and paved areas or paths. •A dd comfortable outdoor benches or chairs under shady areas for a convenient place to rest during gardening and a nice spot to sit and admire one’s handiwork. • I f possible, change outdoor steps to wide, curving, gently sloping paths. Use pavers or fine gravel to line these paths rather than chunky wood chips or river rocks. Paths should be at least four feet wide to allow walker and wheelchair access and wider at each end so there is ample room for the senior to maneuver and turn around. • I nstall an irrigation system to cut down on watering and add low-voltage or solar-powered lighting to improve visibility on footpaths and steps in the evenings. •P rotection against pests and the elements while
gardening is important, too. This applies for both caregivers and seniors. Slather on sunscreen and insect repellents before putting on clothes to ensure no area is overlooked. And don’t forget to protect your lips, use a lip balm with an SPF of at least 30. Use the following tips to ensure you and your elderly loved one have a safe and enjoyable time outside together • Work in the mornings and evenings, when the sun is low and it’s coolest outside. • Bring plenty of water to prevent dehydration. • Wear sturdy shoes, a broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses and gardening gloves. • Bend at the knees and hips to avoid injury. • Move from one activity to another to avoid straining any particular muscle group. • Paint tool handles in neon coloirs or wrap them in brightly coloured tape so they’re easy to find if dropped. • If gardening tools are becoming more difficult to grip and wield, try wrapping foam around the handles or sliding foam tubing on them to make them thicker and easier to control. • Use manual shears instead of power hedge clippers to avoid accidents. • Look into gardening products specifically designed for seniors, such as kneeling benches, ergonomic tools and rolling scooters that allow for both storage and seating. • If a garden-loving senior experiences limited mobility or becomes bedridden, bring the outdoors inside. Plant a mini-garden in pots on the windowsill or create a maintenance-free terrarium in an old glass or plastic container. Simply having some greenery around will surely lift their spirits.

MEN
Take care of your mental health Your mental health is inseperable from your physical health so it’s important to make sure you are taking care of your mental and emotional well-being. Make an appointment with your doctor Preventative care can help you detect any health issues early before they become a major challenge, which can help you have a better quality of life.
Falls One in three adults aged 65 and older fall each year, falls can lead to lacerations, head injuries and fractures. Common risk factors for falling include: poor vision, lower body weakness, physical inactivity or immobility, conditions or medications that cause dizziness and problems with balance. If someone has fallen and they don’t seem badly hurt, help them find a comfortable position. Treat minor bumps and bruises by elevating the injured area and applying an ice pack for about 10 minutes. If you notice signs of serious bleeding, bruising, or swelling, help them get emergency medical care. If you suspect someone has fallen and seriously hurt their head, neck, back, hips, or thighs, ask them not to move and call your local emergency services. Reassure them and keep them warm until help arrives. If they stop breathing, perform CPR. Cuts and scrapes Your skin becomes more fragile with age. This raises the risk of cuts and scrapes in older adults. In some cases, these injuries become infected. While olde age itself doesn’t cause infections, many older adults have chronic health conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease. These conditions can lower their immune system’s defenses against infections. For minor cuts and scrapes: remove obvious dirt and debris from the wound. To treat: clean the wound with tap water if available. If it’s bleeding, place a clean bandage or cloth on top of it. Press on it firmly, or apply pressure by binding the area in tape. Raise the injured area above the person’s heart level. If blood seeps through the first layer of bandage or cloth, don’t remove it. Simply add a second layer on top. Encourage
the person to keep the wound clean, watch for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, increased pain and drainage from the wound. Make an appointment with their doctor if it becomes infected. For severe cuts or heavy bleeding that won’t stop, help them get emergency medical care straight away. Hypothermia As you age, you’re more likely to develop chronic medical conditions that impair your body’s temperature regulation. Older adults may also take prescription medications that change their temperature balance. That’s why it’s particularly important for older adults to wear appropriate protective clothing when outdoors. They should dress in layers that protect them from warm or cold weather. If you think someone has hypothermia, call your local emergency services. Then, help them warm up. For example, bring them indoors out of cold weather, help them remove wet clothes, and cover them with warm dry blankets. Reheat them gradually and focus on warming their chest and abdomen before their limbs. If they stop breathing, start CPR. Cardiovascular problems Age-related changes in heart and blood vessels put older adults at greater risk of heart attacks, heart failure, and strokes. The symptoms of a stroke include: drooping of the face, weakness of the arms, and difficulty speaking. The symptoms of a heart attack include: chest pain, shortness of breath, and discomfort in your upper body. If you think someone is having a heart attack or a stroke, call your emergency services. Reassure them, and keep them warm until help arrives. If they stop breathing, perform CPR.

TOP DAD TIPS Protect them. As a dad, one of your main roles is protector. There are many ways you need to do this. Safety is one: child-proof your home, teach them good safety habits, set a good example by using your seatbelt, make sure they use a car seat. But financial protection is also important: have life insurance, an emergency fund and a will.

Life lessons for an awesome retirement ALWAYS stay up-to-date. Read newspapers, watch the news. Go online and read what people are saying. Make sure you have an active email account and try to sign up to a couple of social networks. You'll be surprised which old friends you may meet. Keeping in touch with what is going on and with the people you know, is important at any age. Never use the phrase: "In my time". Your time is now. As long as you're alive, you are a part of this time. Have fun and enjoy life.

EDITORIAL
Minds Matter For many people ageing is about slowly losing independence, being beholden to others, letting go of little things that are your simple pleasures. By Rayne Stroebel
C
an you imagine that there might come a day when you can no longer take the dogs for a walk on the beach, jump in your car and go and buy an ice cream? Book a holiday in Italy? Buy a pair of shoes that you really don’t need? Invite friends over for dinner? Spend a day walking in the forest? Go to your favourite restaurant? Listen to your most loved music as loud as you want? Doing silly things on the spur of the moment? None of us can actually imagine that this would ever happen to us. I think that is part of the reason why many people have very little patience with and understanding for older people – we simply cannot imagine what it would feel like or that it would ever happen to us. We are all on our way there. Yet, while physically life might
021 828 9268 • percy@percynobleman.co.za • www.percynobleman.co.za be slowing us down, our brain starts developing new neurological pathways around the age of 55 that have not existed before. In a way, this gives us the ability to look inward, to reflect, contemplate. If we embrace our ageing as a period of growth, rather than of decline, magic happens! We start looking back instead of always chasing ahead. We start “seeing the wood for the trees”. And we become wiser. Ageing should not be about loss. It is about growth. It is about a new season where we might show callouses, yet we grow softer inside. We cry easier. We are less gullible. And mostly more kind. The sharp edges smooth, the pace
slows down. It is perfectly natural, and exquisitely beautiful if we stop fighting ageing. Our brains give us the most extraordinary gift, that if we embrace it, we could have our most creative years between 60 and 80! If we embrace it ... Stop trying to defy ageing. Let your hair grow grey. Say your say. Stop trying to keep up. Let life shine its mystical light through you like the late afternoon sun through the autumn leaves. Let it breath the sacredness through you. For if you truly open your heart and your mind to the ageing process it will be the best years of your life – less of doing and more of being.

Frustrated by the ordinary world and the endless ‘faceless’ products available on the high-street, British entrepreneur Freddy Furber, in early 2013, sought to reinvent the wheel of what it meant to be a well-groomed 21st-century modern gentleman. Percy Nobleman, tentatively named after Freddy’s Great-Grandfather embodies everything he envisions men of this day should hold dear to them. Style, sophistication, good manners, and a little adventure! Percy Nobleman captures these feelings through his comic books series, The Adventures of Percy Nobleman, published in 2015 as the world’s first Instagram comic book series. “There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” – Ernest Hemingway

>> WHY Guys love cars >>
It’s not a secret that guys love cars. For them, the price is rarely an important factor when it comes to buying a good car. And even today, when there are so many eco-friendly cars, most men still opt for a fast, powerful machine. This love can be seen even in the way they take care of their vehicles – some guys’ cars are cleaner than their bedrooms. So, what it is about cars that move men? Here are five reasons men love cars. 1 A sense of freedom For men, cars represent freedom and adventure while also allowing them to be in full control. In other words, when they have a machine that follows their every command and can take them wherever they want to be, it gives them a sense of freedom and happiness. This is also why many men tend to drive with only one hand on the wheel – they feel comfortable in their car. Plus, in the world where very few things are under our control, it’s not hard to see why men love their fully controllable cars. 2 A feeling of accomplishment It’s not easy to buy a dream car, and nowadays, you have to work extra hard to buy any car at all. So, when men manage to get a car that they truly love and have spent years working for, like Rolls-Royce or Ferrari, for example, they become emotional about it. It becomes not just a machine but a symbol of their hard work, which is why they will cherish it and take good care of it. Moreover, the society has made men believe that they are not “real men” unless they own a car. This is why owning a car is like a rite of passage for men – it gives them an increased sense of self-worth. 3 They are practical Needless to say, cars are practical. Regardless of the
38
weather, a car can get you to your destination in one (dry) piece. Or, if you have a lot of things to move from one location to another, you can simply put them in your car. Late to work? Drive, and you’ll get there in time. Plus, cars can also bring your whole family together; if you like traveling, you can go on a family road trip. 4 An outlet for their emotions True, driving fast is dangerous, but it also gives men the chance to unwind and simply feel good. Men tend to search for outlets that allow them to express their frustrations, calm their nerves, or simply think things through, and driving fast in their cars is one of the best ways to do all that. After all, there aren’t many things more calming than driving along the open road, especially when the weather is nice. 5 They are customisable A great thing about cars is that even if you buy a car that might not be perfect, you can perfect it yourself. They are fully customizable, so you can easily replace the parts that don’t suit your needs, upgrade the engine, paint your car in any colour you want, etc. Plus, many men appreciate the process as much as they do the result, which is why working on a car, even building it from scratch, makes men not just happy, but proud.

very parent wants to fill his children’s hours with activities that will empower and enrich them. To that end – and to celebrate Father’s Day – here’s an incomplete list of DAD things to do with your kids.
Go playground shopping If you live in an area with multiple playgrounds, turn your travels into a piratical expedition. Make a playground map, mark the spots you want to hit, and devise a plan with your kids for exploring each one. Make lists of the best parts of each – which one has the twistiest slide, the biggest fountains, the most imposing jungle gyms – and revisit as needed.
Create a spy network Few concepts capture a kid’s imagination more than secret messages. Hide messages anywhere: in drawers, behind bookshelves, in the vegetable basket or inside a favourite book.
Bust the kids Let your kids ride their bikes until you (the police officer) pull them over – for speeding, to ask if they’ve seen an on-the-run thief, or any of a thousand other scenarios. All parties go home happy.
Invent stories (with a little help) Take a few sheets of paper, cut them into squares,

Prep for a zombie apocalypse One simple go-to activity: zombie training. Kids and dads pretend to fight off the undead with foam darts or whatever else is handy and safe. It’s loud, messy, goofy, and totally make-believe but always gauranteed to make everyone laugh.
Just do what dad loves! Instead of gifts, rather spend the day with your kids doing what dad loves best: be it bird watching, photography, rugby, gardening or fishing – let your kids enjoy your hobby with you for a father's day tradtion. You will be surprised how much they love the bonding time with you and how much it will grow into a special interest for father and son. Most dads would rather have time with family than a gift any day.
and write a single and possibly hilarious word on each. Biscuits. Alien. Rhinoceros. Then ask your kids to make up a tale, occasionally flipping a square over and adding the word on it to the story. It’s 100% free, 10% imaginative, and customisable to you and your family.
Introduce them to a record player Now, granted, this isn’t for everybody: It doesn’t always work to have a 2-year old’s peanut butter– covered hands around a precision device that doesn’t play if you bump it. Venture into the attic and retrieve that old and spider-infested collection of records, and be charmed by this relic from the past. Indulge in the novel idea of listening to something straight through, instead of fast-forwarding.

The craft beer revolution is worldwide and while the scene in Cape Town is still relatively young, South African hops are fast gaining popularity, celebrated by devout ale drinkers and brewers for their unique flavors. The city is now home to numerous local microbreweries as well as bars that pride themselves on their craft beer selection on tap. Here’s a round up of our favourite places for a good frothy beer. Urban Brewing Co. If you are a beer lover who loves a good pub then it’s worth the trek over the mountain to Hout Bay to sample one of Urban Brewing Co.’s finest beers in their very own pub. Their beer garden is a picturesque spot to while away the afternoon switching between their five signature beers that have been crafted using a mix of new and classic techniques. Each one possesses different characteristics and flavours that you can discuss in detail with your surrounding fellow beer drinkers. 31 Harbor Rd, Hout Bay
Jack Black’s Brewing Co. The family-run Jack Black’s produces a wide variety of beers from their 25-barrel facility. They pride themselves on flavour and their handcrafted methods. They offer tours and tastings throughout the week at their brewery. They also have their own taproom where you can drink great beer and enjoy live music, open mic nights and a weekly quiz night. Their Food Truck Fridays is also a great event and, their Butcher Block Burger is a great way to soak up the beer. 10 Brigid Road, Diep River
Newlands Spring Brewing Co. Our craft beers use only the finest water from the original source of the Newlands Spring; to this day the legendary mountain water still bubbles up, crystal clear and pure as ever. It’s why our taste has been trending for centuries. In 2015 the Mariendahl brewery, a national monument, was re-established to its original use – which is to brew great beer. Once exclusive to the tap, Newlands Spring Brewing Co. is now available in bottle, and can be found chilling in fridges all over the Cape. 3 Main Road, Newlands

Don't miss chapter 4 in our July 2019 issue of Billboard Magazine!
Once off the train, Travis decided to find the bathroom and see if he could somehow wash the smell of dog urine off his trouser. The now painful scratchy tag at his lower back was combined with a wet slap of cloth against his leg every time he took a step forward. He glared down at the dog as it skipped along beside him.
D
espite the no-dogs-allowed sign outside the bathroom, the dog followed him in, and sat beneath the basin. Travis looked at the long row of sinks. None had taps. The Cape Town water crisis had resulted in the removal of all the public taps to avoid wastage and in their place was a small bucket of brilliant blue liquid. Travis bent over and tried to sniff the bottom of his pants. The pungent whiff of dog wee hit him in the face. He had to try and clean the pants. Lifting his leg up onto the basin, he leaned across and grabbed a handful of the blue waterless hand sanitiser. He dolloped the gooey liquid onto his pants where the dog stain lay and rubbed it vigorously. Leaning over to blow the liquid dry, the smell of detergent mixed with wee filled his nostrils. He retched and a faint blue smudge appeared on the chino pants leg. “Freaking hell dog. This is even worse” said Travis to the dog as he lowered his leg back down, “Come here, looks like you’ve got a collar on. Maybe we can phone your owner and get you home. Maybe they have a car and can take me to town” he said as he reached towards the dog’s collar and drew the tag around. The dog pulled back, and Travis had to grab the dog’s
42
collar again, swearing at the dog. “Says your name is Sparky. That’s funny. You don’t look sparky to me” said Travis, turning over the disc, “and here’s the number. Hmmm. Ok, let’s get out of this place and I’ll phone your owner” said Travis, standing up straight and walking determinedly out of the station bathrooms, onto the streets of Muizenberg. Outside the historical stone Muizenberg station, Travis walked into a nearby parking lot and pulled his mobile out of his pocket. He pressed the button to light up the screen and a red battery blinked at him twice and then shut down. Travis closed his eyes “Holly mother” he said. His mother’s voice rang through his head, “Not even you can stuff this up my boy”. He shoved the dead mobile into his pocket and shook his head. His mother and probably Uncle Ben were going to kill him. “Wap” He opened his eyes. The dog had barked its sad little yelp of a bark at him. “You want to go home boy?” Travis asked the dog. “Look, there’s a backpackers here, let’s go and use their phone to call your owner” said Travis as he walked to the entrance of the backpackers. He stood at the glass door until someone noticed him and then buzzed the security
gate open. “You can’t bring the dog in dude” said the dreadlocked door opener from behind the coffee counter. Travis looked down at the dog, “Stay here boy”. “Wap” The phone number on Sparky’s tag rang and didn’t go to voicemail. Travis eventually gave up after the third try. “No luck hey bro?” asked the barista of the backpackers front office. “No” said Travis, looking out the glass doors to Sparky. The dog panted non-stop, tongue out. “Well, like, who knows man. The dog could be really loved. So, like, maybe take him to a vet or something. They have those chipscanner things?” advised the barista. Travis sighed. He was already going to be late and he may as well find the dog a safe place. Checking if he had a chip sounded like the right thing to do. “Thanks hey” Travis said as he left the backpackers. He could possibly still not completely screw up this opportunity. All he had to do was get the dog to a safe place and then he could buy another ticket and catch the next train. “Come on boy. Let’s go to the vet. I’ve seen one in the village” explained Travis. Sparky stood up as Travis walked towards him, following obligingly, his tail wagging in the air as he went.

South Africa – disqualified in 1957 because of apartheid – eventually hosted (and won) the 20th African Cup of Nations in 1996. Historically Egypt has been the most successful, winning seven times, followed by Ghana and Cameroon – next year’s host – with four wins each. In 2013, Afcon was switched to odd years so as not to clash with the FIFA Soccer World Cup.
