Getting your home ready for winter

Examples: electrical, hanging of pictures, rails, pelmets, painting, varnish, just to name a few

Winter is just around the corner so make sure your home is prepped and as ready as your wardrobe will be for the chilly months ahead. Bring out the fuzz It’s time to bring out the thick rugs and plush throws. Adding rugs to your lounge and bedroom areas is not only comfortable underfoot but also creates warmth within these rooms. A cosy winter throw or a warm blanket in the lounge can be particularly

8

handy to huddle under, on frosty winter nights. Next, it’s time to bring out the winter bedding and extra blankets for your bedrooms. It’s a good idea to layer your bedding with a down duvet and wool blankets for extra warmth. Insulation is key One of the most basic,

yet often forgotten things to do when getting ready for winter is to check the windows and doors in your home for draughts. Make sure that every door and window are insulated and there are no air leaks, well ahead of winter. If need be, add thicker curtains to your windows to help keep out the chilly air.

Getting your home ready for winter Prepare your fireplace Start gathering a few piles of wood. You can store the wood in your garage, away from the elements. Separate pieces of wood into bundles and tie each bundle together for easier storage and use. An early prep will allow sufficient time for your fresh green stock of wood to lose the excessive moisture and be ready for the season ahead. Once your stock is ready you should be good to go for those cosy nights tucked up by the fire with a good book and cup of hot chocolate. Bliss!

Planning ahead The laws of supply and demand dictate that if you wait until temperatures plummet before stocking up on firewood or getting more gas for the gas heater, you’ll pay more. Alternatively you’ll be faced with Murphy’s Law and the supplier will have run out. Buying winter essentials such as firewood, gas or even replacing old or broken heaters is best done before the weather turns cold. Also bear in mind that power cuts are more likely in winter, either because high winds blow trees across power lines or increased demand puts strain on electrical infrastructure.

South Peninsula, CAPE TOWN, SINCE 1996

Your Local Business & Lifestyle GUIDE for the South PENINSULA Billboard is an institution, I have been using the magazine & The Blue Book since I was a teenager! I honestly think you are one of the best things for the companies in this valley, I have found so many services via your books. Thank you for all the hard work you and your team do to keep us all informed about how to support local. I don’t have my own business at the moment, but if I do get one up and running someday, the Billboard will be one of my top choices for advertising. Kerry-Ann van Rooyen

HELP BILLBOARD REACH IT’S SILVER MILESTONE - the heart of our community The Billboard Team is crowdfunding for Billboard Magazine – local community magazine in the South Peninsula of Cape Town with a history of 24 years in business. THE BILLBOARD is a monthly magazine in Cape Town’s South Peninsula – 19 000 copies strong – featuring a comprehensive range of local businesses and services that want to reach their local area and clientele. We aim to provide an effective, inexpensive means of

advertising for every business in the area. We run competitions and have a monthly theme with advertising specials on the Double Page Spread in the centre of the magazine. For residents and tourists alike, we provide a guide to what local businesses and services have to offer and “What’s on” in the area. Every year we publish a much loved Business directory called the “Blue Book”. Recent economic events have put a strain

on the Billboard, and in turn on the families supported by us. Each month Billboard has a very high print bill of R50 000 to ensure the highest quality product, plus other operational costs. If we reach our target, we will be able to continue printing the magazine, and in turn, continue employing staff and support their families as well as providing this essential product to our community.

Education

School from home As a parent of two primary school children, I am very happy to say that I have never had the calling to educate my children myself. I admire those who are brave enough to take their children’s education on personally, and I adore my children’s teachers for educating my two children, so that I don’t have to.

T

hat was until lockdown. Now we find ourselves in situations which require us to be parents and teachers, and for those of us who are poor teachers, the challenges abound! Schools across the country, private and government have been challenged to find ways in which to connect with their students and teach them. Schools in the south peninsula are no different and although we are a small community, the challenges remain the same. We spoke to the headmaster of Fish Hoek High School (FHHS), Gavin Fish, to get his opinion on how to manage schooling from home and what his team of teachers are doing to help their students. ‘We have devised our own Covid policy. We communicate, communicate, communicate!’ says Fish. FHHS has managed to contact all students and work is distributed by different means, depending on the student’s access to data and devices. Fish notes that the trick in communication comes in getting students to communicate back with the school. They have found that work submission and Q&A with the teachers has provided an indication of student engagement. FHHS is using all means of communication with students from Whatsapp groups to Google classroom.

This got me wondering, but what about the parents who are trying to manage work, and possibly schooling their children from home? Perhaps parents who are already home schooling their children could offer up a few suggestions, or have they been affected to? We chatted to Lorinda, a mom with three children living in Fish Hoek. Lorinda shared that her two older children are schooled electronically by another mother who also home schools her children, and therefore Lorinda doesn’t have to manage her two older children. However, her younger son requires her input and time and this has been challenging as he was attending a self-directed education centre prior to lockdown. ‘I’ve opted for trying to figure out solutions together, rather than a top-down, do-what-I-say kind of approach’ explains Lorinda. Lockdown has impacted on her children’s opportunity to take learning outdoors and be in nature, which is part of their curriculum. ‘My advice to children and parents would be to relax a bit more, don't force your idea of education down your child's throat... children never stop learning so there is no rush to get anywhere, children learn best in their own time’ recommends Lorinda. ‘Do what you can. Don't beat yourself up if you have a bad day’s work. But bounce back, today is a new day, start again. If you are bogged down, leave that subject and go on to work that is more familiar to you. Mind over mattress, get out of bed, establish routines’. Great advice for older children, who are able to hold themselves accountable! However, as parents of primary school children, how do we, the parents, stay sane? ‘Forgive, but then insist that they try again and better this time than the previous. Understand that we are all in this together, speak to friends, you will be amazed at just how similar many of our experiences are’ recommends Fish, and I couldn’t agree more. So, hang in there, moms and dads, teachers and students, we will get through this, wiser in ways we may not yet know or understand.

home maintenance

make your home

Winter ready! It’s getting a little harder to get out of bed in the morning and more tempting to linger in a hot shower, sure signs that winter is on its way. South Africa’s temperate climate means that for most of us this means breaking out a heavier duvet or putting more blankets on the bed. But are there any other practical steps you can or should be taking to prepare for the change of season? Between the money saved on electricity and future repairs, your wallet will thank you later.

Y

our home needs to perform at its best during the coldest months of the year, especially when the first frost or storm hits. Weatherproof your doors and windows It's important to get ahead of the winter weather and make sure your home is ready to handle the cold to come. Check your doors and windows closely for gaps and areas that may cause a draft. Use weatherstripping or caulk to seal them up, or consider replacing the windows or doors if the problem is

severe enough. After a hot summer, you might need to replace some of the putty that has dried and cracked. Get an annual fireplace inspection and chimney sweep Clogged chimneys lead to house fires, but they can also cause carbon monoxide poisoning. Having a yearly inspection and chimney sweep may cost you money, but it could also save your life. Additionally, make sure the flue on your chimney is fully functional so when the fireplace is not in use, you don't experience drafts.

Bring the outdoors inside In case you didn't already do this before Autumn came around, be sure to move all outdoor furniture and appliances (grills, lawn mowers, etc.) into your garage or shed as well as any planters you'd like to save through the season. Clean out your gutters While your trees got a trimming, they were probably also doing their best to drown you in Autumn leaves. Not only are they a pain to rake up off the ground, but they love to find a home in your gutters. Give your

the inside of your home Once the outside is in order, your last port of call is the inside: With the outside of the roof checked, take a quick trip into your attic area. Shine a torch up at the underside of the tiles, looking for any signs of damage or water entry. While you’re up there, make sure you have adequate insulation installed – as hot air rises, a large portion of your heat can be lost if your insulation is lacking.

18

Damp is winter’s best friend, and your home’s worst nightmare. During winter condensation on your windows can become a problem, so check these areas on a regular basis during winter. Consider investing in a humidifier for any rooms that look to be struggling. A trick that not many of us realise is that our ceiling fans have a “reverse setting”. This causes the blades to rotate in the opposite direction, helping keep hot air from escaping. It’s easy to overload electrical outlets such as the heater, TV and children’s gaming consoles that are all plugged into one extension cord. But keeping an eye on shared plugs around the house or upgrading to a better, bigger

outlet with surge protection, could help you avoid the possibility of overheating a circuit and blowing a fuse. Check regularly for plugs that trip or for loose wiring around the house, because these could mean there is an electrical fault that needs fixing. With lockdown, a lot more time is likely to be spent in the living room (especially if it’s cold), so don’t be complacent. Avoid leaving heaters unattended or candles burning. Make a note of any repairs that require professional help and check with your insurer if they qualify for insurance assistance. Generally, ‘wear and tear’ type repairs will be for your own account and need to be done to maintain your insurance cover.

gutters a thorough cleaning before the first winter weather hits to ensure you don’t get any major blockages. Also, do a quick check of all your downpipes, just to make sure they are firmly fixed to the wall. Rodents and pests Seal all the holes and cracks around the exterior to help ensure pests like squirrels, mice and rats can't get inside for hibernation. Hot water heating system Another tip is to make sure your geyser is crack-free. Have it checked and serviced by a licensed contractor at least once a year. Chances are if you haven't installed one in 10-15 years, you'll need to replace it. Fitting a geyser blanket will also help reduce your electricity costs as will insulating your roof. Other items to attend to • Trim trees and remove dead branches so they do not damage your home or injure someone

Some sensible spending before it gets cold might mean avoiding bigger costs when a tree falls down or a gutter breaks in the middle of the night.

if they fall because of wind and winter storms. • Check smoke detectors, fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace batteries to ensure they are operating properly. • Accidents do happen, as much as we don’t like to think about them, and keeping a clutterfree home is another way to avoid unnecessary risk.

• Keeping shortterm insurance in place by paying your premium and following your terms and conditions, provides a warm safety net to help protect you for the cold winter ahead. If you take care of the small things, the big things take care of themselves.

The laws of supply and demand dictate that if you wait until temperatures plummet before stocking up on firewood or getting more gas for the gas heater, you’ll pay more.

ardens tend to look a bit dreary during the Winter months but by growing a few seasonal flowering plants you can brighten your garden for the season. There are quite a few varieties of plant that suit the cooler months into Spring. Azaleas are evergreen and the flowers vary from pale pink to cherry, coral or magenta. They are drought tolerant and frost resistant. Camellias have gorgeous rosettes of white, pink, red or bi-coloured blooms and will flower from late Autumn to early Spring. It is an evergreen, upright shrub that looks good all year round, preferring a dappled shaded position. Strelitzias (Crane flower/bird of paradise) is an exotic looking plant with bright orange petals and purple ‘tongues’. It resembles a ‘bird of paradise’ and is a statement plant for any garden. Antirrhinums (snapdragons) can be relied on to provide colour throughout the colder months. Ranging from bright reds, bronze, yellow, orange, pink,

purple and white. Keep them flowering for longer by deadheading regularly. Hellebores (hellebores orientalis) is an evergreen perennial that starts flowering in early Winter. The leaves are fan-shaped and the flowers vary from pink, wine, green or white. Hellebores prefer a dappled shade during the Summer months. Iceland poppies will grow happily in full sun all through Winter and Spring if they are deadheaded continually. The poppies come in a variety of colours, red, pink, yellow, orange, cream and white and will bring the wow factor to your garden! Calendulas are a lovely colourful plant to brighten any border, along with Salvias, which are both perennials (the Salvia is also from the Sage family). Salvias can have pretty blue and white flowers, or pink, lavender, yellow, violet or white. Other colourful plants to choose from are Zinnias, Celosia, Delphiniums, Phlox, Portulaca, Nicotiana, Dianthus, Begonias, Godetia, Lobelias, Rudbekias and Pansies. It may be Winter, but you can still have colour in your garden!

Winter garden maintenance A little prevention now can save you lots of hard work in spring when the garden comes back to life, so don’t let the cold weather keep you indoors. Maintenance such as the regular mowing of lawns, weeding and pruning of shrubs is essential. Follow these simple rules to nurse the garden through the cooler months.

• Mulch pots and garden beds to keep weeds at bay, pulling them out as soon as they appear. Wait until after rain to remove weeds from beds and between pavers as the soil is softer, making them easier to pull out with roots attached. • Plan a companion-planting system as a solution to pest control. Certain plants act as deterrents to pests and can be used in place of chemical controls. Try onions and garlic

top tips

near roses to repel aphids. Marigolds are also a winner for repelling pests. • Remove wintergrass from lawns as soon as it appears. If you don’t get to this weed in time, it dies down when the weather warms up but leaves seeds that pop up again next year. • So get the wellies on, switch the TV off and get the whole family into the garden this weekend. It will be rewarding for all.

How to make... Your Own Hand Sanitiser

Medical health practitioners

When it comes to preventing the spread of infectious diseases like COVID-19, nothing beats good old-fashioned handwashing. But if water and soap aren’t available, your next best option, is to use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Unless you have a stockpile of store-bought hand sanitiser, you’ll likely have a hard time finding any at a store or online right now. Due to the rapid spread of the new coronavirus, most retailers can’t keep up with the demand for hand sanitiser. The good news? All it takes is three ingredients to make your own hand sanitiser at home. The key to making an effective, germ-busting hand sanitiser is to stick to a 2:1 proportion of alcohol to aloe vera. This keeps the alcohol content around 60%. This is the minimum amount needed to kill most germs.

Essential service compliant with infection control guidelines

Estelle Moys 084 820 3920

How do you make your own hand sanitiser? • 2 parts isopropyl alcohol or ethanol (91–99% alcohol) • 1 part aloe vera gel • a few drops of clove, eucalyptus, peppermint, or other essential oil Adhere to these tips: • Make the hand sanitiser in a clean space. Wipe down countertops with a diluted bleach solution beforehand. • Wash your hands thoroughly before making the hand sanitiser. • To mix, use a clean spoon and whisk. Wash these items thoroughly before using them. • Make sure the alcohol used for the hand sanitiser is not diluted. • Mix all the ingredients thoroughly until they’re well blended. • Don’t touch the mixture with your hands until it’s ready for use. How to use hand sanitizer • You need to rub it into your skin until your hands are dry. • If your hands are greasy or dirty, you should wash them first with soap and water. Bottom line: Hand sanitiser is a handy on-the-go way to help prevent the spread of germs when soap and water isn’t available. Alcohol-based hand sanitisers can help keep you safe and reduce the spread of the new coronavirus.

These Herbs Do the Job Better

It’s that time of year – time to break out the boots and light up the fireplace. Consider the power of plants to up your immunity and help you hedge infections this year. Elderberry Chances are, you’ve already tried elderberry in some form or another, as this deep-purple berry has definitely gone mainstream in the past few years. Elderberry is antifungal, antibacterial, and antimicrobial. There’s evidence that elderberry is effective at treating the flu, as well. It’s most commonly found as a syrup, but tinctures (a plant extract made with alcohol or glycerin), lozenges, and even gummies can work too. Take this remedy once per day if you’re trying to prevent sickness, and then much more frequently once you’re already sick – every few hours or so. Elderberry is considered safe, but don’t chug a whole bottle or anything like that – a teaspoon to a tablespoon of syrup at a time will work. Keep syrups in the fridge, as they aren’t shelf-stable. If you have any autoimmune disorders, it’s probably best to stay away (because it stimulates the immune system). Echinacea Another well known immune booster is echinacea, aka coneflower. It works by stimulating the immune system to produce natural killer cells and other sickness-fighters. Echinacea is most effective used right when you start to feel that tickle at the back of your throat, rather than when a full blown sickness has already taken hold. A tincture is the best way to take it, but teas won’t fail you either. It’s important to note that if you have a ragweed allergy, you may also be sensitive to echinacea – so if you feel any telltale allergy symptoms like itchiness, hives, or increased congestion, stop taking it immediately. If you have an autoimmune disorder, skip echinacea. Ginger Great for boosting your overall immunity during cold and flu season. This versatile plant lends its natural fire to many different uses – sip on a ginger tea, head to the juice bar for a fresh ginger shot if you’re feeling icky, or just add more ginger to your cooking. It’s pretty safe when used in cooking and remedies, but pregnant people shouldn’t ingest more than 2 grams of dried ginger per day. Garlic Garlic is really easy to use – eat it every day to keep yourself feeling top notch. Up your garlic intake when you’re actually sick, too. Make a super garlick-y soup, or pack it into a jar of honey and let it sit for a few weeks to infuse. Dietary doses of garlic are pretty safe. It would be difficult to take enough to harm you, but if you’re on anti-clotting medications, be cautious.

Fur isn't flawless We may admire our pets' plush coats, but as beautiful as fur is, it's not a perfect insulator, especially when it's very cold. If an animal's coat gets wet, the fur loses much of its insulating ability. That's why, in winter, pets need protection from extreme temperatures, which includes warm, dry, draft-free shelter; plenty of food; and lots of water. Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet.

Add a flickering flame Flickering candlelight around your home will create warmth and coziness during the winter months. Candles or candle lanterns create a warm glow in the home, which is a welcome reprieve from the icy weather outdoors. These tips are a great start to getting your home ready ahead of the winter chill and making sure that you enjoy being indoors during winter.

Shop online or not?

At the height of lockdown, I preferred to send my husband out to the shops. I was enjoying not running from pillar to post and being ‘stuck at home’ felt good. That wore off after week two and I was again ready to visit the shops and enjoy a bit of retail therapy, albeit in the tinned fish isle at the supermarket with my suffocating face mask.

T

o be honest I found my first shopping experience depressing. I couldn’t see people’s faces, I was sprayed with sanitiser at every corner, all the smaller stores were dark and closed and when I made it back to my car, I yanked off the mask and breathed fresh oxygen for the first time in an hour instead of my own carbon dioxide. Don’t get me wrong, I am fully in favour of masks and hand sanitiser, but the human connection I craved was met with an underwhelming response. If going out left me feeling like this, then I definitely wasn’t going to shop online – a feasible option if you don’t crave human connection. I have since been out to the shops many more times, and now that we’re in Level 3, I am hopeful that some of the smaller stores will be able to resurrect their businesses. I chatted to Marc Edwards, owner of Valyland in Fish Hoek, about how he is working with tenants to ensure safety of tenants and customers. ‘Those that are deemed essential services, have had to restrict the amount of people in the store at any one time. Given the queues at the supermarket, they have had to adopt various systems to ensure people are

safe. Most have been common sense. These include demarcating areas for people to stand allowing sufficient social distancing, having staff hand sanitise everyone coming into the store, having sanitiser on offer when exiting the store, erecting screens where appropriate to protect tellers, easy to read signage etc’ If you have been to any of the stores that are able to trade, you will definitely have encountered these protective measures. But what about the stores that are unable to trade? How are these stores going to stay viable? ‘They should trade from whenever they can and not wait to come back to work. They need to think differently about how they can retail – e.g. pizza delivery rather than collection, on-line DIY educational videos for the hardware stores, delivery for the supermarket or central pick up points like Takealot. Re-think your business and try and reduce costs to ensure staff are retained’ recommends Edwards. And as customers, we should also be thinking about how we can support local businesses as much as possible – ‘Communities support each other and we have seen this clearly with Valyland. I think business should support local clubs and

schools and expect support in return (or stop the sponsorship). Community takes care of community, the ring widens, and all are better off’ notes Edwards. For a small community, such as our south peninsula community, we are definitely able to support local business in whatever way we can; from shopping at the local store (versus online), buying foods produced locally – have you visited the Neighbourhood Farm below False Bay Hospital? To trying out take-aways from your favourite eatery or supporting new ventures from old stores. Some stores have also opted to selling vouchers now, which will be redeemable when they are able to trade again, helping them stay afloat for now. As customers we can help keep these businesses stay alive, and hopefully save a few jobs too. Shopping during covid has definitely become less fun and more tedious. In order to keep spirits up, Edwards suggests ‘Talk to people when shopping while abiding by social distancing of course. The shops are depressing with everyone covering up so at least chat and greet. Ignoring each other adds to the current mental stress which is bound to manifest. Be responsible. That’s it!’

Valley Car Wash, Valyland Centre, Fish Hoek • Before you head into winter traffic, make sure that your windshield wipers are not frozen to your windshield. • Keep your windshield washer fluid tank full. • It’s important to allow the oil to flow before taking off in cold weather, so start your car and let it warm up for a minute or two. This will ease wear on your engine and other mechanical components. • Check the tread on your tyres regularly for uneven or extreme wear as well as your spare. • Keep an extra hat, pair of gloves and jacket in your car for unexpected weather changes. • If you are heading into a skid or slip, remember to keep your foot off the brake and the accelerator. • When stuck in ice, try using your floor mats to gain extra traction under your tyres. • If you hit a patch of ice and start to slide, take your foot off of the gas pedal! Do not use your brake. Do not jerk the steering wheel. Instead, turn your car towards the skid. • If the road conditions are icy, don’t panic! Because people tend to over-steer, it’s important to continue to drive slowly.
