I am Tertius, a passionate designer and illustrator based in beautiful Kommetjie. Redline Design began 15 years ago with the focus on innovative design, packaging and branding for clients such as Woolworths, Momentum, Clicks, Yuppie Chef and Pioneer Foods.

Situated in Eastlake Island, Marina da Gama, Edukids Educare has been operating for the past five years. It was always the dream to open a school in the Marina so that parents within the community and surrounds would have easy access to an Early Childhood Facility, relieving some of the daily stress of travelling. The school offers a ‘home-awayfrom-home’ environment in which children are guided through their development in a gentle and loving manner, Ages: 2 to 5 years old Eastlake Island with the goal of Open: 7am till 5.30pm Marina da Gama School readiness encouraging each Programme Eastlake Island Mrs Wilson Ages: 2 to 5 years old child to be confident Teacher Open: 7am tillQualified 5.30pm ECD Marina da Gama 084 506 0274 and happy School readiness Edukids123@gmail.com Programme Mrs Wilson as individuals. EduExcellence embraces a unique therapy based approach to education; combining a full therapy curriculum with a normal school day consisting of an education curriculum (we use a Cambridge/ CAPS curriculum combination).

We’re different. Not your old-school accountants. Our vision is to collaborate with the entrepreneurs, the freelancers, the one-man bands, the start-ups, and all the other hustlers of the business world. To provide accounting, tax & advisory services that are relevant, comprehensive and innovative. Cloudbased, outsourced financial management packages structured with your core business in mind and not billable hours. Consider your hand held.

We confidently deal with established companies but thrive on walking fledgling companies, through the early design setup process. Our specialities are logos and branding, identity design, website design, marketing materials and a broad array of packaging from fast moving consumer goods, to wine. We are passionate about thoughtfully revitalising and consolidating existing branding. If you feel it’s time to inject an edge into your business or are looking for a solution to help your product stand out from your competitors, we are the people to speak to. Each child receives a full assessment which includes looking at sensory profiles, learning styles, development, food intolerance/ allergies and history profile, to compile a full and holistic individual approach to each child. Therapy is built into our everyday school life, and we look to support and strengthen natural areas of weakness and strength on an individual basis. We cater for and specialise in learners with attention and learning difficulties, social and emotional difficulties, mild to moderate development delays and learners on the spectrum.

The demand for most trades, in most parts of the world, is strong and getting stronger. Jobs associated with building and rebuilding roads, bridges, water, and the power grid are expected to grow by double-digit percentages – faster than the overall economy. Jobs for plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters are projected to grow 16% during this same time period. And projected employment growth across all occupations is 7.4%. Construction, the mechanical trades, and industrial occupations such as welding are in-demand trades that could mean either a stable career or a launching pad. You might start out swinging a hammer, but it could lead to project management, environmental analysis, sales, education, or engineering. This story is going to tell you how you can do it, too. Given a decades-old institutional bias toward university, one that is also felt in South

Africa, it’s not surprising that trades teachers feel as though they’re constantly playing second fiddle. ‘Our biggest challenge today is that guidance counsellors push every student into university,’ says Jim Reid, director of apprenticeships for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). Oddly enough, the trades bear some responsibility. As the construction industry has waxed and waned over the years, one of the places it looked to cut costs was training. This led to a shortage of helpers and apprentices. ABC contractors are also on the front lines of getting students prepared as early as possible,

while they’re still in high school. Trained high-school graduates are deemed ‘trade ready’ when they can read a set of plans, set up a job, and work with journeymen. They may stay with their trades training to pursue journeyman status, exit to university, or pursue both. A blended profession consisting of university and trades education that’s achieved incrementally, without university debt, is appealing to many and a smart way to hedge your bets. ‘The trades are a way to earn and learn,’ IAM’s Reid says. ‘They’re a way to still have university available to you. It’s a way to secure your future.’ He started out as an auto-body

It’s a career choice, not just a job.

mechanic, became a machinist, and went on to get two bachelor’s degrees: one in labour studies and another in education. A future in the trades begins even before you graduate high school. Pay attention while you’re in public school to the education that’s right in front of you. It’s a gift. When you go on from there to pursue a trade, remember that whatever you put into it is what you get out of it. I’ll leave the final words of advice and encouragement to Greg Sizemore, ABC’s vice president of environment, health, safety, and workforce development. His advice is directed as much at the parents as the students. ‘Parents shouldn’t push kids who are performing poorly in the classroom towards a future in construction, assuming that the student won’t need maths or communication skills. We want not only the best student, we want the right student.’ ‘The trades,’ said Sizemore, ‘are not merely an alternative to university. A trade is equal to university. If you’re a PhD and you’re at home on a Saturday night in summer and your air conditioner quits, the smartest person around is somebody who can fix that air conditioner. The trades are one of the most noble career choices that any individual can make. Banks would not be built. Buildings to house machines, hospitals, and any other structure would not be built without the trades.

Tips on getting started, what a great & tough day looks like for each trade, obscure tools you may get to use & inside info on what each trade loves.

Detailed advice on wanting to be a: welder, electrician, plumber, stone mason, carpenter and mechanic to follow in our September 2019 magazine. Be sure not to miss it. It is sure to be a bumper issue!

between the characters in the books. It is also a great opportunity to spend quality time together and bond with your child. 3 Smarter children The more a child reads, the more they learn. The more a child learns, the more they understand. The more they know, the more intelligent they are.

Reading is a crucial element of every child's education. It is essential for children to become successful in school and in their journey through life.

W

hy? Because reading is required to understand most other topics. Most of a child’s learning is done from reading the writing on a blackboard or in books, magazines, and workbooks from the teacher. The capability to read is crucial. After all, if a child can’t read those items, how is it possible to answer math or science questions? It’s not possible! Here are three reasons why you should support reading:

1 Cognitive abilities are acquired Reading develops a child’s imagination and creativity! In addition, reading supports logical thinking and problem solving skills. 2 Better communication skills In addition to the contact they have with you during reading time, your child is developing useful communication skills by observing the interactions

Why gardening should be taught in schools

It is often debated whether gardening should be included in schools. Our immediate and soul focus on academic learning can often detract from more creative and explorative learning experiences. Could we do more to improve our children’s nutritional health and environmental appreciation? Image by Sheldon Moultrie Encourage healthy eating Recent statistics indicate a shocking 1 in 3 children are overweight by the age of 11, with a third of children eating junk food every day; meaning it’s clear our children’s nutrition is being dangerously affected by convenience food. Also, the amount of time children spend outside is dramatically decreasing. School gardening provides children with opportunities to gain extra outdoor exercise whilst teaching them useful development skills. Gardens containing fruit and vegetables can help to revise attitudes about particular foods - students are more likely to try eating vegetables they have grown themselves and to ask for them at home. When this influence is taken back home, it can help improve their family’s shopping and meal choices. Raise environmental appreciation By deepening children’s sense of connection with nature, school gardening can inspire environmental stewardship. Children are able to learn about water and energy cycles, the food chain and the individual needs of different species, meaning they will have more of a desire to explore outside. Gardening can also offer insights to the long-term human impact on the

natural environment. From the water shortage to the over-use of pesticides, children who engage in gardening have first-hand opportunities to observe the importance of conservation and intelligent allocation of resources. Provide unique learning experiences Gardening activities are fantastic for helping children engage in a way that is more difficult in the classroom. It allows for surprises to arise, for example, when plants are afflicted with fungus, how the weather and seasons can impact the growth of different crops and how different insects that are enticed by different plants. These opportunities show nature is in control of our world and give students immediate and personal reasons for wanting to know the answers to pressing questions. Watching plants grow is a fun and educational experience for children. Their enormous curiosity and excitement over anything new makes them naturals for gardening. Growing plant seeds with kids teaches them how nature works, adds to their interest in environmental sustainability and gives them pride in seeing the results. It also helps encourage children to cook their own food and diminish their reliance on junk food.

Essential first aid skills for

primary school KIDS

Estelle Moys 084 820 3920

Learning a few basic skills could help your child make a real difference in an emergency. Sprains and strains, cuts and bruises, broken bones and asthma attacks. It sometimes seems that there’s no end of scrapes that children can get into. But would your child know what to do if one of their friends had an accident or emergency? Primary school children are more than capable of learning first aid skills. Here are a few basic skills that could turn your child into a lifesaver. Check the situation The first step is for your child to make sure that the situation is safe before they try to help. If there are hazards such as broken glass or traffic, move to a safe place and call 10177 for help.

Bleeding •P ress firmly on the wound using some clean fabric such as a dressing, a towel or an item of clothing. •R aise the injured area so it’s higher than the person’s heart. This helps reduce the bleeding. •T reat the person for shock by making them lie down with their head low and their legs raised.

Severe allergic reactions • Get your child to talk to their friends about their allergies, the symptoms of a reaction and what triggers them. If they use an Epipen, talk to their parents about how to use it. • Recognise the signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as: difficulty breathing, swollen tongue and throat, itchy or swollen eyes, blotchy skin, feelings of panic and signs of shock. • Clear the area of the allergy trigger or remove the person from the area; help them to sit down comfortably, leaning forwards slightly to help their breathing. • Call 10177 as soon as possible.

Soft tissue injuries (sprains and strains) • L ook for signs of soft tissue damage such as bruising, swelling and pain. • Use the RICE technique: get the person to rest the injured area, apply ice such as a packet of peas wrapped in a towel, compress the injury with a bandage or other padding to keep it comfortable, and elevate it to reduce swelling.

Head injuries • Get the person to sit down so that if they feel dizzy or lose consciousness, they won’t fall over. • Put a cold compress on the area to reduce swelling. • Keep watching the person to make sure they are alert and responsive. If they are, then their injury is probably minor, although someone should stay with them until they recover. If they become less responsive, call 10177.

Broken bones • L ook for the signs of a break: they are a lot more painful than sprains or strains, and there may be an obvious deformity. • I mmobilise the area – make the person comfortable so they can keep the injured part still. Don’t try to move them unless they are in danger. Call 10177 for help.

Asthma attacks • Look for signs such as wheezing, coughing, struggling to breathe and panic. • Get the person to rest comfortably, sitting down. • Help the person to use their inhaler straight away. If they’re no better after a few minutes, get them to take one or two more puffs of their inhaler. If they are still struggling, call 10177.

FINAL

Look out for another exciting story in our September Billboard issue!

Travis couldn’t believe it, there, in amongst a motley mix of brown dog poop shone a bright stone. A stone that was definitely closer to a diamond than anything else Travis had ever seen.

C

arefully, Travis slipped the packet over his hand, then picked up the precious cargo and folded the bag around it. Standing up he turned to face the piercing glare of the receptionist in the vet's practice. He grinned stupidly. “I’ll just go. Thanks, I’ll get hold of the owner. Come Sparky, time to go home” Travis announced, and as fast as he could, made his way out the door, the dog poo packet tight in his grasp. At the same moment that Travis

walked away from the Muizenberg vet with a new pet and a diamond the size of a golf ball in his dog poop packet, a well-known gangster named Eldo waited at the Observatory train station. “Call him.” “Yes boss.” “Listen, boss wants to know where the bleddy hell youz is?... You lost the dog? Boss, he lost the dog.” “We put a diamond in a dog and he lost the f#$*ing dog?” “He says he’s sorry boss.

The dog ran on the train without him and he missed the train.” “What time was the train?” “6am boss.” “Find out when it’s coming in. Search that train and find out what happened to the dog. Getting a child to read Set an example. Children frequently adopt the customs of their parents, so these customs can be great ways to support your child to read. More specifically, if you happen to love reading, be sure to read books regularly while your child is in the same room. If your child sees you love reading, they will be more inclined to develop the same custom.
