The People Behind The Business Jon & Angela Matthews – A Country Life Jon always wanted to be a farmer and started out as a farm hand moving sheep and tending chickens, but his instinctive entrepreneurial skills soon told him he needed a change of direction. And change he did, working from a small cow shed he started making gates and fences for the local agricultural holdings, soon becoming known as “Jon the Fence”, a nickname which remains to this day. The business flourished and he soon out grew the shed, moving into its current location in Tadworth. As it grew so did the range of products, because Jon learned a very important lesson – give the people what they want. What the people wanted were all manner of things related to the outdoors, and not just for their business but for their homes as well. In the area there is a great following for country pursuits and leisure, as well enjoying the pleasure of a well-kept garden. As the needs of the local people have expanded, so have the products Farm Fencing make or stock. Everything from animal feed, fuel, garden equipment and furniture, outdoor clothing, sheds – the list is endless and of course still includes the original fencing. Jon’s wife Angela, an interior designer, joined the business 9 years ago, initially organising events, product launches, and staff. Now taking a central role, Angela has been pivotal in ensuring their opening of a new workshop, by The Derby Arms, making bespoke gates, planters and trellising went successfully and in October 2013, launched a new retail ld u o c outlet in Walton-on-the-Hill stocking country wear and It ! u o y everything for the followers of hunting, shooting and be fishing. Jon the Fence and Angela embrace the community they live in, and take an active part in it sponsoring and supporting many local activities and charities, including pony clubs, local schools, sports clubs, and the OMNI Terrier Derby – a fun event raising funds for the Epsom Racing Welfare Trust. You will regularly see them both out and about in the area, walking on the Downs, or perhaps at a race meeting – which they both love – and enjoying their country life. When The Ashley Centre in Epsom had an urgent need for some posters, we had no hesitation in recommending Kevin Bourke of Big Blue Print. They have done excellent work for us and often on very tight deadlines. As we knew they would, they reacted immediately and as a result have had a number of additional orders from the Centre.
Can someone give me the website I need? Many companies have a website – but does it do their business justice? Time for something different, but where to start? They want to talk to someone who will listen to them, and give advice without technical jargon. We tell them to talk with Dave Weller at Venti Venti. Dave goes out of his way to help by listening and understanding their business. The Waterhouse Café in Kingswood did not have a website, so they turned to Dave for something to promote their family friendly business. The project is complete and the website is live for all to see.
Flash Bang Wallop – What a picture! Gill Alexander @ Barrett & Coe is a local photographer with a growing reputation, and especially when it comes to children and families. Spaghetti Tree – Walton-on the-hill is a delightful Italian restaurant which prides itself on being family friendly. So we put the two together. Gill introduced a special pack for photo shoots, which Maria at Spaghetti Tree could offer to her customers. As a result Gill’s fame is now spreading as the restaurant customers take up her offer.

“An Evening With” thebestofepsomandwell is now a regular monthly networking event. When we started these we knew what we wanted to do – but had no idea how to do it – so we turned to Hannah Hall at Sunflower Corporation. Hannah organised everything, from sending invitations, on-line booking, the agenda and greeting the attendees on the evening.
