State Bound! Buffs, Lady Buffs win Sub-State and advance to the state tournament

By Freddie Arnold Telescope Sports Editor Running their way through Substate play, the Republic County Lady Buffs are State bound. Republic County coach Alan Sheets knew that in order to beat the No. 1-seed Washington County Tigers, the Lady Buffs would have to come together as a team and work harder than they have all season. As the old cliché says, ‘It’s better late than never.’ No one knows this better than the Lady Buffs as their late game heroics paid off with a 58-52 overtime win Saturday night. With only four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and deep in foul trouble, the Lady Buffs (18-5) had a lot of ground to make up as they trailed the Tigers by 11 points.

“They all believed in themselves and rode the storm.” Lady Buffs Coach Alan Sheets “I told the girls we were still in this game and have been preaching all year long that it is never over until it’s over,” Sheets said. “You just got to keep playing.” Chipping away at the lead with what little time was left, the 11-point deficit was soon cut to six. With the snowball rolling and momentum on their side, a late Abbey Anderson steal led to a Jayden Jackson threepointer — her only points of the night. The trey brought the Lady Buffs within one score, 43-46. Down, but not out, the Lady Buffs resurgence continued as they battled back to tie the game with a late free throw, sending the contest to overtime. With the end of regulation, came a new ball game. With the score tied at 46, and still in foul trouble, the Lady Buffs rose to the occasion and defied all odds down two players. Once trailing by 11, the Lady Buffs picked the pace and jumped out to a quick four point lead in overtime. Inexperienced senior, Miranda Cottenmyre was called to fill the shoes of her fallen comrades and fellow post players Kalli Valek and Devin Nutsch, who had fouled out. Low on personnel, Cottenmyre’s presence opened up lanes and shots for point guard LaShae Hedstrom as the two combined for seven overtime points, propelling the Lady Buffs to victory. “We have been telling the girls all year that you just never know when your opportunity is going to come,” Sheets said. “Miranda got her opportunity and performed really well in overtime, she was huge. We used her to set a number of picks because the girl guarding her was never going to switch. Consequently our little point guard, LaShae Hedstrom, was open for a number of layups.” In extra-play, the Lady Buffs outscored the Tigers

LASHAE HEDSTROM goes in for an uncontested layup in the overtime period for the Lady Buffs as they defeated Washington County to advance to the state tournament. Hedstrom was able to get a couple of uncontested layups in the overtime period to keep the Lady Buffs ahead of the Lady Tigers. 12-6. In the last three years, the Tigers (20-2) have only lost four games. Of the four losses, three have come from the hands of the Lady Buffs who seem to have their number. “The attitude was great throughout the whole

game,” Sheets said. “They all believed in themselves and rode the storm.” Kiara McCall led all scorers with 26 points in the game followed by LaShae Hedstrom who netted 12. The Lady Buff’s positive attitude and unselfish play Continued On Page 2B

Late in the basketball post season, you can bet that nearly every game will go down to the wire. This year was no different. Using their superior shooting skills as a staple, the No. 2-seed Republic County Buffs escaped with a Substate Championship defeating the No. 1-seed Bennington Bulldogs 60-58 Saturday night. “We expected a battle and knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” Republic County coach Kevin Kuhlman said. After pulling ahead early, in the first quarter, the Buffs were getting a look at something they haven’t seen all season. The Bulldog’s set up in a 1-3-1 defense, and used the strong play of their guards to pull back and even the score at 28 a piece heading into the half. “We jumped ahead early, but like any good team they weren’t going to go away,” Kuhlman said. “At halftime I told our guys to just keep battling.” After trading leads through the third and into the fourth quarter, the Buffs relied on their strong shooting to keep the Bulldogs (20-2) at bay. The Buffs used their keen three-point shooting to stay ahead of Bennington as they shot 53-percent, making 10 of their 19 shots from beyond the arc. “When they were playing the 1-3-1 they left the back side open,” Kuhlman said. “With the backside open, we were able to hit Gary Hadachek who was able to hit a couple big threes.”

“The kids aren’t worried about stats. They just do their job and are very unselfish.” Buffs Coach Kevin Kuhlman With Hadachek, Trenton Kuhlman also nailed in six three-pointers. Kuhlman scored a game high 26 points and pulled in 5 rebounds. On top of Hadachek’s eight points, he led the game bringing in nine rebounds. After grabbing a two-point edge in the third quarter, the Buffs (20-3) matched the Bulldogs 16 points in the final quarter, edging Bennington by two for the Substate crown. “I told the Bennington coach before the game that there were two teams very deserving to go to state,” Kuhlman said. “But one of us wasn’t going.” The Buffs out rebounded all three teams they faced in the tournament, and coach Kuhlman knows that they will need to continue this streak to make an impact at the State tournament. The Buffs will be given a 3-seed spot in the State tournament and will face the 6-seed Winchester-Jefferson County North Chargers (17-6). “Going down the stretch we need to take care of the ball and continue to rebound,” Kuhlman said. Winchester is a big team. They have a couple big kids, we will need to limit their shots and continue to play.” Republic County 60, Bennington 58 Score by Quarters Republic County (20-3) 14 14 16 16 — 60 Bennington (20-2) 11 17 14 16 — 58

--Solomon The No. 2-seed Republic County Buffs outlasted the No. 3-seed Solomon Gorillas 59-46, Thursday in the Substate semifinals. Powered by Trevor Allen’s career-high 32 point 12 rebound double-double, the Buffs took full advantage of the poor first-half showing by the Gorillas (16-6). Struggling in the first half, the Gorillas shot a mere 6-25 from the field, making 0-9 three point shots. Out shot and out rebounded 21-13 in the first half, the Buffs were able to build a 29-18 halftime cushion. Though the strong shooting Buffs uncharacteristically drew cold from beyond the arc, shooting only 3-15 (20-percent) throughout the game, their ability to take care of the ball let them ride an early lead to victory. The Buffs only turned the ball over six times. Behind Allen’s 32-point game, Trenton Kuhlman was the Buff’s only other scorer in double digits as he added 13 points. --Ell-Saline In the Semifinals of the Substate tournament, the Republic County Lady Buffs found themselves face-toface with an old foe. Last year, in 2012 Substate play the Lady Buffs knocked off the Brookville-Ell Saline Cardinals in the first round. The Cardinals met again with the Buffs looking to settle a score this year in the second round. Despite returning all starters from last season, the Cardinals were unable to find vengeance, as the Lady Buffs edged the No. 3-seed Cardinals 44-40 Friday night. The Cardinals (15-6) failed to find anything positive to work with. From beyond the arc, the Cardinal shot 14-percent, making only 2 of their 14 attempts. To make a bleak situation even worse, they could find no help. The Cardinals scored zero points off the bench. After grabbing an early 13-7 lead, the Buffs refused to budge staying on top throughout the entire contest. Once up nine in the fourth quarter, the Buffs rode them out with their eye

on a Substate championship. Though the Buff’s seemed a bit shaky at the charity line, making only 5 of 13, they made up for it from everywhere else on the court. The Buffs shot 47-percent from the field, and 43-percent from three point land. LaShae Hedstrom led the Buffs with 14 points on the evening. Abbey Anderson scored 10 and hauled in 9 rebounds. --Wakefield The Republic County Lady Buffs (18-5) wasted no time opening the first round of the Substate tournament with a bang. Led by senior Devin Nutsch’s doubledouble of 17 points and 10 rebounds, the Lady Buffs cruised to an easy 56-27 victory over the Wakefield Bombers Tuesday night. The Lady Buff’s solid defense grounded the No. 7-seed Bombers allowing only 10 first half points. What chance the Bombers did have, failed to launch. In their ten-point first half, the Bombers (120) converted only 21-percent of their field goals and were out rebounded by the Lady Buffs 25-15. Giving nothing yet taking it all, the Lady Buff’s pulled in 18 offensive boards and used them to cash in on 18 second-chance points while the Bombers 8 offensive rebound only produced 2 second-chance points. Other scorers in double figures included the Buff’s Abbey Anderson who scored 13 points and tallied 7 rebounds. Kiara McCall followed with 10 points of her own. The Buffs (20-3) put on a shooting clinic posting a 5112 halftime score. In the contest, the Buffs shot an astounding 52-percent from the field. At halftime, the Buffs were 7-9

from beyond the arc and finished 9-20 at 45-percent. Even from the charity line the Buffs were on fire. They shot 11-14, making 79-percent of their free throws. With scoring, came sharing. A total of 11 players got a hand on the ball as the Buffs totaled 21 assists throughout the game — the Leopards (4-16) only recorded three. Trevor Allen and Trenton Kuhlman totaled 41 points, over half the team’s score.

Allen led the team scoring 22 points and dishing out 5 assists, as Trenton Kuhlman contributed 19 points. The Buffs didn’t give the Leopards a chance, let alone a shot, forcing 22 turnovers — double what the Buffs had. Lady Panther’s season ends in slim loss The 2012-13 chapter of Pike Valley Girls basketball came to a climatic close as the final second clicked off the scoreboard at the substate semi-final game held last Thursday at Osborne. More on that later… Opening round of substate play began as the 3rd seeded Lady Panthers took on the 6 seed Lakeside Lady Knights on Monday, Feb. 25th. The Pike Valley gals jumped to a 14 – 8 first quarter lead and kept that margin by halftime with the score 24-18. The second half belonged to Pike Valley as they outscored their opponent 34 – 10 on their way to the 58 – 28 victory. The Lady Panthers had 4 girls that scored double figures, led by Jaid Runft with 15 points and 8 rebounds; Kora Bergstrom had 11 pts, 9 rbs ; Courtney Freed 10 pts, 5 rbs ; Casey Freed 10 pts, 1 rbs ; Brooke Jensen 4 pts, 2 rbs; Tori Swafford 4 pts , 2 rbs; Peyton Runft 3 pts , 4 rbs. The PV gals shot a collective 49 % from the floor and shared 16 assists on the 21 field goals scored in the win. On the following Thursday, Feb. 28th, it was semifinal play vs the 2 seed and tournament host , Osborne Lady Bulldogs. Senior Kora Bergstrom scored two quick baskets for the Panthers, but within 2 minutes of the start of the game, she picked up her second foul and was forced to sit the remaining first quarter. By quarter’s end , Osborne held a 15 – 8 lead. The Lady Bulldogs used efficient 3-point shooting in building a 12 point lead midway through the 2nd period before the Lady

Panthers battled back to just a 6 point deficit by halftime, trailing 29 – 23 . In the second half, Pike Valley played as good of man to man defense they ever had all season, holding Osborne to just one field goal for the whole half ( one 3-pt basket ). The Lady Panthers outscored the Bulldogs 13 – 9 in the second half but still came two points short at the final buzzer. Pike Valley fought back in the 4th quarter to take a 3 point lead with a few minutes left in the contest, but several untimely miscues allowed Osborne to retake the lead with 9 seconds to play. Following their last timeout, the Lady Panthers had a promising last-second shot miss its mark, bringing the season to a close. Pike Valley defended and rebounded very well in the contest, created 10 steals and had 7 assists on the 12 field goals they made, but it was poor shooting and turnovers that would cost them the opportunity to advance in sub- state play. The Panthers shot a disappointing 23% (12 / 53) from the floor, but did convert 12 / 16 from the foul line. Fifteen turnovers also hampered the comeback effort and allowed Osborne to retake the lead late in the game. Final score : Osborne 38 Pike Valley 36 . Casey Freed led the Panthers in scoring on this night with 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Kora Bergstrom finished her final game as a Lady Panther by scoring 9 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Courtney Freed scored 6 points, had 4 steals, and took a season high 3 charges. Jaid

3B

Runft scored 9 points and had 4 rebounds. Tori Swafford grabbed 3 rebounds; Brooke Jensen had 2 rebounds and 2 assists, while Peyton Runft gathered 4 rebounds in the contest. “While none of us wanted our season to end at this stage, Coach Thayer and I are so proud of the effort our gals displayed in battling a good Osborne team,” stated Coach Bergstrom. “ We were fighting up-hill all evening but continued thru all adversity. We tell them when you give everything you got, win or lose, that is the most important virtue of the game. Our gals fought hard enough to deserve that victory, we just missed some opportunities to execute a complete comeback. The disappointment in not advancing our season is overshadowed by our pride in the effort they sacrificed , the chemistry they developed, and the character they displayed on the court while competing. “ I want to thank my daughter, Kora, for a wonderful career at Pike Valley. It’s not easy being the coach’s kid and a team leader at the same time. She’s had great success as a Lady Panther and great teammates , who will continue to aspire and achieve high goals next season. Kora was our only senior, the future is bright for next year as well !” The Lady Panthers closed the season 14 – 7 overall , ( 8 – 2 in league play) .

Panther’s fall in first round In the Pike Valley Panther’s first round game in sub-state against Osborne, the Panther’s opened up the game to keep it tight but eventually Osborne was too much for the Panthers, topping them 57-42 to end Pike Valley’s season. The Panther’s led Osborne after the first quarter, 9-8 but in the second period, Osborne went on a run and went into the halftime break up 23-14. In the second half, the Panther’s out-scored Osborne 9-7 in the third period but Osborne again went on a run in the final quarter, out-scoring the Panther’s 27-19 to put the game away. “Osborne started strong using their quickness to get to the basket and making their free throws when they got to the line,” said coach

Gary Loring. “We rallied a number of times throughout the game and stayed within seven points for most of the contest.” The Panther’s top scorer, Quinton Isaacson, sprained his ankle in the first half which slowed the Panther’s scoring threat down. “He did the best he could for the rest of the game,” said Loring. “Everyone contributed in the game but we just couldn’t get over the hump.” Despite his sprained ankle, Isaacson ended the night with high score, 15, but was only five of 14. He didn’t struggled as much at the line, going five of seven. Casey Jensen added 11 for the Panther’s, going three of nine from the floor and five of nine from the charity strip. Gabriel McGregor had five for the night. Cade

Huncovsky, Robert Cox and Aaron Swanson each had three and Dakota Brewer sank two free throws for two. “We fought through a lot of sickness and injuries throughout the season, but improved as the year moved on,” noted Loring. “We had eight seniors that have been great leaders in practice and the games as well. Dakota Brewer, Cole Ehlers, Sam Janssen, Aaron Swanson, Robert Cox, Cade Huncovsky, Braden Field and Quinton Isaacson have all contributed in a positive way to Pike Valley basketball. I was very proud of Braden Field and Sam Janssen for coming back out this year after missing their junior year and competing hard all season.”
