MAYA ANGELOU: AND STILL I RISE Mar. 14, 2017 7PM McGEE THEATER

Bob Hercules Rita Coburn Whack

Maya Angelou has lived not one life, but half a dozen: from her hardscrabble roots in the Depression-era South to supper club chanteuse, coordinator for Martin Luther King’s SCLC, journalist in Egypt and Ghana, comrade of Malcolm X, Presidential medal of freedom honoree and bestselling author of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Her life has uncannily intersected with some of the most profound moments in modern American history.

This is a collaborative project of The Batte Center and the Union County Community Arts Council with support from the Wingate University Lyceum program, Writing Center and Department of English.

THE IF PROJECT Apr. 4, 2017 7PM RECITAL HALL

Kathlyn Horan

The If Project follows a group of inmates incarcerated in a maximumsecurity women’s prison who are part of a writing workshop co-created by a Seattle police detective and a repeat offender serving a nine-year sentence. The workshop challenges the women to answer, in their own words, a simple question with a difficult answer: What if things had been different?

The Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers is a program of South Arts. Screenings are supported in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
