Moon Junk I have always been fascinated by space. The lunar landings, the Mars probes, and deep space probes. I think about how they managed to get men to the moon with the technology that was available in 1969. Our cell phones probably have as much computing power as those early spacecraft. The lunar missions I think are interesting due to the fact that on the 3 man missions, the lunar lander was on the rocket under the capsule, which meant that while in moons orbit, 2 men would crawl through the capsule and enter the lunar lander, detach and land on the moon. While 2 men were on the moons surface, 1 was still orbiting the moon. Then the 2 on the surface would have to shoot back up to and dock with the capsule, crawl back in the capsule, and detach from the lunar lander so they could make their way back to Earth. Oh yeah, some missions also had a moon rover, you know the little car that the astronauts rode around in on the moon. Just where did they have that thing, you might ask? It was actually unpacked from the lunar lander. These rovers were left on the moon since there was no way to get them back to Earth. There were only 4 made “flight ready”, 3 were used on the moon and the 4th was used for parts for the other 3. Any that are on Earth in museums and the such are test vehicles or models. So not only were these rovers left on the moon, but the bottom of the lunar landers “the descent stage” are there, and when the top of the lunar landers “the ascent stage” (the part the astronauts went back up to the capsule in) fell out of the moons orbit, they eventually landed on the moon. But there is much more than that. Not only has the US sent a variety of objects and probes to test flight data, conditions, etc., to the moon but so has the USSR, Japan, China, India and ESA (European Space Agency) based in France. Most of these were intentionally crashed due to malfunction. Humans have left over 413,100 lbs of material on the Moon.
