Confirming our reputation as one of America’s outstanding regional theatres, TheatreWorks’ 2014/15 Season offered award-winning artistry onstage, innovation in new works, highly successful education programs, and a mission-driven commitment to diversity. As the TheatreWorks-originated musical Memphis played in London throughout the year, our eight-play season featured a wealth of premieres, three playwrights in residence, and many awards. The world premiere of The Great Pretender won playwright David West Read the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Award for Best Original Play. He joined Pulitzer Prize nominee Rajiv Joseph (The Lake Effect) and Tony Award nominee Randall Myler (Fire on the Mountain) as resident playwrights this year. Myler’s poignant bluegrass musical was recently nominated for Best Production of the Year by the Theatre Critics Circle, while our innovative holiday comedy Peter and the Starcatcher was deemed the Top Drama/Comedy of 2014 by Talkin’ Broadway. Starcatcher joined the musical drama Two Pianos, Four Hands on TheatreWorks’ top ten list of best-selling shows. The season was completed by the regional premiere of Quiara Alegría Hudes’ Pulitzer-winning drama Water by the Spoonful, a daring Sweeney Todd set during the London Blitz, and a critically acclaimed revival of Noël Coward’s comedy Fallen Angels.

Her 2014 New Works Festival was a vibrant success; it highlighted six works in development, including Kimber Lee’s tokyo fish story, an Asian drama subsequently scheduled for our mainstage season, and Shakina Nayfack’s One Woman Show, our first work to explore transgender issues. Nationally, two of our musicals in development were selected for the prestigious National Alliance for Musical Theatre’s Festival in New York: the Havana-set Cubamor and Chinese American The Great Wall. The company’s artistry and financial integrity were recognized locally as well, with The Mercury News writing, “TheatreWorks’ successes have illuminated the Peninsula’s cultural scene like those of no other arts institution,” and the San Jose Business Journal describing TheatreWorks as the “#1 Top Performing Arts Organization in Silicon Valley.” With our Arts Education Programs reaching over 25,000 students throughout the region, the 2014/15 season proved a spectacular success for TheatreWorks, providing cultural enrichment and creative opportunities to people of all ages. The New Works Initiative
The 2014/15 Season marked the 13th anniversary of our renowned New Works Initiative, which has contributed to the development of scores of new plays and musicals, earning national recognition and acclaim for TheatreWorks. WRITERS’ RETREAT In April 2015, TheatreWorks hosted a Writers’ Retreat, inviting playwrights, composers, and lyricists from around the country to work on drafts of their newest plays and musicals.
2014 NEW WORKS FESTIVAL The charming Lucie Stern Theatre complex was once again the home of TheatreWorks’ 13th annual New Works Festival, held in August. Over 3,000 patrons gathered for the two week-long Festival to enjoy and discuss readings of five new plays and musicals. Artists mounted staged readings of their works, received audience feedback, and refined their pieces with the support of TheatreWorks’ artists and directors. Audiences and artists agree that the New Works Festival is a source of great inspiration and pride for TheatreWorks.

Education AT A GLANCE We provided our community with 62,564 educational interactions. We serve on average 25,000 students a year, 1,800 adult learners, 975 teachers, 57 schools from 7 counties.
FOR YOUTH
Concepts at Play: These action-packed, ten-day in-school residencies integrate the arts into math, science, poetry, and English as a second language. Led by TheatreWorks Teaching Artists, students physically explore complex concepts, encouraging creativity as well as collaborative skills. Our assessment has shown vocabulary retention increased from 35% to 85% through these programs.
PlayMakers Summer Camp: Elementary age students (K–6) build a foundation of theatre techniques—theatre and life skills—all while creating their own original works.
School Tours: Our annual touring production makes stops at elementary schools throughout the Bay Area to address topics such as bullying or coping with stress.

1440 COUNTDOWN: MAKE A PLAY IN 24 HOURS
HEALING PROJECT AT LUCILE PACKARD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
The Young Playwrights Project: High school students learn the art of playwriting from an accomplished, professional playwright during this ten-week residency program. The project culminates in a whirlwind day in which student work is directed and rehearsed by professional artists, and performed before an audience. The Young Storytellers Lab: In a two-week residency, junior high school students learn to craft their own monologues, both on the page and on the stage, and perform original stories for their community. Arts Integration Network: Supported by TheatreWorks, a number of long-term partner schools have grown into a breeding ground for new and innovative programming in the world of professional development for educators.
Characters @ Play Spring Break Camp: A one-week session focusing on building acting skills, working together, and having fun while using imagination. 1440 Countdown—Make a Play in 24 Hours: Ten teams of students gather for 24 hours at TheatreWorks, during which time they create original plays. The pressure cooker environment challenges them to exercise their creativity and resilience in a safe environment, and provides them with skills to take artistic risks with confidence. Junior Conservatory: Middle and junior high school students develop their skills in acting, dancing, playwriting, and singing. New Works Conservatory: This intensive five-week program is for high school students serious about the performing arts, and affords them the opportunity to grow as performers under the guidance of the best actors, directors, and playwrights in the Bay Area.
COMMUNITY PROGRAMS The Children’s Healing Project: Teaching Artists use creativity and self-expression to help aid the healing process for patients at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. Career Development Program: Exceptional interns share their talents with TheatreWorks staff, and learn what it’s like to work in a professional theatre company while earning college credit. 5

45TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
LEADING LADIES
TheatreWorks’ 45th Anniversary Celebration was held on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at the elegant Hotel Sofitel in Redwood Shores. The theme, “Original and Timeless,” referred to both the company and esteemed honoree for the evening, Dr. Donald Kennedy, President Emeritus of Stanford University.
The second annual Leading Ladies featured three inspiring female speakers: New York Times bestselling author Lalita Tademy, Emmy-nominated screenwriter and television producer Margaret Nagle, and Representative Anna G. Eshoo of California’s 18th Congressional District. Each took the stage to share their stories of innovation and ambition, encouraging all to follow their passions. The afternoon’s entertainment was an inspiring concert by Vienna Teng, computer scientist turned musician, who followed her own passion to become a nationally acclaimed indie-pop artist.
Attendees included The Honorable Cory Booker, Senator from New Jersey; and The Honorable Anna G. Eshoo, Representative from California’s 18th Congressional District. Both spoke eloquently about Dr. Kennedy’s contributions to the scientific and educational landscape of our nation, and of the importance and value of TheatreWorks to the Silicon Valley community.
45TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION / PHOTO DREW ALTIZER
Playwright/composer Paul Gordon worked with Robert Kelley to create a special version of Jane Austen’s Emma, which was performed at the Celebration. Emma was the highest-grossing TheatreWorks show of all time, a fitting tribute to 45 years of innovative theatre and new work development.

In honor of Dr. Kennedy’s passion for education, the Donald Kennedy Fund for Education at TheatreWorks was established. In all, 433 donors supported the event, raising a total of $523,960, the highest-grossing fundraiser for TheatreWorks Silicon Valley to date. TheatreWorks announced the creation of an honorary position, Leading Ladies Laureate. The 2014/15 Laureate was Kimber Lee, a female playwright whose play, tokyo fish story, was in development at TheatreWorks. A giving appeal to support future Leading Ladies Laureates raised $26,856. In all, 407 supporters raised $140,964. Chair: Jenny Dearborn, Senior Vice President, Chief Learning Officer, SAP SPRING FUNDRAISER—TONIGHT! On Saturday, May 2, 2015, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley hosted a new, fabulously fun event called TONIGHT! The TWSV offices at Sobrato Center for Nonprofits were converted to a New York street scene with food booths representing many cultures, including a Sabrett’s Hot Dog stand and New York-style cheesecake. Guests “grazed,” bid on silent and live auction items, and bought raffle tickets. All were then treated to a casual and hilarious one-nightonly performance satirizing two popular musicals. The event sold out with 180 attendees and raised $193,185.
