LE THÉÂTRE DU NOUVEL-ONTARIO 2014.2015 SEASON

LE THÉÂTRE DU NOUVEL-ONTARIO

REGRESSIVE RATE

[18 to 35]

Life is simple, with our new Regressive Rate! This is a perfect alternative to yearlong subscriptions for people 18 to 35 years of age who wish to plan a night out at the Theatre, with no strings attached! You are no longer constrained to subscribe and your last minute mindset is put to ease. Your loyalty will be rewarded; the more you attend, the more you save. Your first ticket will cost you $30 and every time you attend another play, within the adult series that same season, the TNO will knock $5 off the price of your last ticket purchase. See the “BOX OFFICE” page for more details.

OUR NEW WEBSITE Our website is undergoing a major makeover over the summer! Its modernized interface and updated navigation system will facilitate access to information and do so intuitively. Completing online purchases will never be so easy! We also believe its contemporary visual design will better showcase upcoming performances as well as their artists. We encourage you to consult our website regularly, letno.ca.

SUPERTITLES Supertitles are back for a third consecutive season! This technology allows us to project an English translation of the play above the stage. The projections are done simultaneously, which means that English speaking audience members can enjoy French theatre… in English! Seeing that this initiative was warmly welcomed and very much in demand, the TNO has decided to increase the number of performances featuring Supertitles. The TNO will now be offering supertitled performances for all four shows pertaining to the adult series, Saturdays at 2pm and at 8pm. SUPERTITLES SPONSOR

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

GENEVIÈVE PINEAULT

William Shakespeare, Hamlet [III, sc2; modern version]

Many go to the theatre to relax and to be entertained. They are seeking escapism and rightly so. After all, theatre is a source of pleasure. But life is also made up of emotions and feelings. Theatre allows us to learn, to grow, to live and to be moved. It is a reflection of reality, of the life and world that surround us. Yes, a reflection of society because today’s plays and those of the past are often based on daily occurrences. That explains why so many theatregoers perceive theatre as a mirror of their own lives, with all their qualities and faults.

In his foreword to Stephan Cloutier’s Fuego, a children’s play, Dramaturgy Consultant Paul Lefebvre, who happens to be a friend and colleague, wrote that “to the City, plays are similar to a person’s nighttime dreams. They are representations of the world that allow us to find creative solutions to matters that reason and will cannot answer alone.” The City needs theatre. We need theatre. Its role is to highlight, expose, question, celebrate and inspire. Theatre is a representation of the world as it is, as it should be. Each year, the TNO seeks to entertain and challenge. I’ve been amused, moved, awed and charmed by this season’s plays. You will discover works that will touch your heart, tickle your funny bone and blow your mind. I’m anxious to share them with you. I’m looking forward to meeting you all season long! Enjoy the ride!

“In the theater, the purpose is to represent reality, holding a mirror up to virtue, to vice, and to the spirit of the times.”

JE N’Y SUIS PLUS 75 minutes without intermission

When Ariane witnesses the arrest of a young woman in a department store, she snaps and implodes. In a fiery rant lightened by a touch of self-mockery, she rails against her complicity with oppression in a world of disheartening cubicles and ridiculous overconsumption. On a bare stage with just two large back-lit screens, her powerful monologue is amplified by the energy of an on-stage percussionist.

[LA CHAIR ET AUTRES FRAGMENTS DE L’AMOUR]

ADULT SERIES

A PLAY BEST LOVED BY TWO

UNE VIE POUR DEUX [LA CHAIR ET AUTRES FRAGMENTS DE L’AMOUR] 80 minutes without intermission

A novel by renowned author Marie Cardinal is magnificently adapted for the theatre. After 20 years of vie à deux, Jean and Simone hope to revive their sagging relationship by taking a vacation in Ireland. During a walk on the beach, Jean finds the body of a drowned young woman. This morbid encounter becomes the couple’s shared obsession. Her presence becomes a part of them, alive in their fears, their bitterness, their jealousy, and ultimately, their redemption.

FEBRUARY 2015 SATURDAY 28

A THÉÂTRE ESPACE GO production

2 pm + 8 pm

performances offered with Supertitles

The dialogues are psychologically acute and beautifully poetic; the actors are alive with truth and humanity. Jean and Simone are like so many couples who have stumbled and faltered through years of everyday life, drained by its joys and sorrows, its hopes and disappointments. Too often they come to believe that their love has long gone. Perhaps there is more to their story than they know. Author EVELYNE DE LA CHENELIÈRE based on the novel by MARIE CARDINAL Director ALICE RONFARD With JEAN-FRANÇOIS CASABONNE, VIOLETTE CHAUVEAU and RACHEL GRATON

GET TO KNOW A COMRADE

MOI DANS LES RUINES ROUGES DU SIÈCLE 105 minutes without intermission

A TROIS TRISTES TIGRES production Born in Soviet Ukraine in 1969, Sasha Samar – who is both the main character and the actor in this play – recalls his childhood fantasies, featuring cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin and gymnast Nadia Comaneci, and his adolescent aspirations which ran into Lenin and Soviet indoctrination. Chernobyl, Siberia and the fall of the Berlin Wall were soon to follow. Autobiography becomes theatre; world history becomes one man’s story.

APRIL 2015 SATURDAY 25

2 pm + 8 pm

performances offered with Supertitles

Sasha Samar is an amazing storyteller. With rhythm and energy and a Slavic bon vivant attitude, his play is alive with history, but also with music and dance. Relive the last decades of the 20th century as viewed from the other side of the Iron Curtain. As recent political turmoil in his home country still resonates, Samar will draw you into the intensity of Ukraine’s love-hate relationship with Russia. Original idea by SASHA SAMAR and OLIVIER KEMEID Author and Director OLIVIER KEMEID With ANNICK BERGERON, SOPHIE CADIEUX, GEOFFREY GAQUÈRE, ROBERT LALONDE and SASHA SAMAR

On his journey, the resolute little worm encounters many strange and amusing characters – a family of sea-horses, a tap-dancing spider, an unlikeable young girl – and braves the perils of the wide world.
