Symphony Hall set for a revamp 4

DECEMBER 2018

New images have been revealed to show a £12m revamp of Birmingham’s Symphony Hall. Plans have been submitted by Performance Birmingham Ltd, which runs the concert venue to Birmingham City Council for the £12m facelift for Symphony Hall. The plans would see the current wall facing Centenary Square demolished to make way for a new glass façade with a dedicated entrance to

Symphony Hall as opposed to the one inside The International Convection Centre (ICC). The extra space around Symphony Hall would accommodate new bars, corporate hospitality suites, learning and education spaces with the box office to be relocated. There will be newly designed toilets and cloakrooms which will be a part of the extra spaced created by the revamp.

Performance Birmingham Ltd hope that the project is completed in time to host the Conservative Party Conference in 2020. However, plans state that the venue will remain open during the construction period. Designers Page/ Park Architects, which have come up with the new scheme, stated that the venue lacks its own identity ‘with the monochrome and corporate feeling circulation and public

spaces’ of the ICC. For an arts space which showcases performances should be bright and vibrant which the new revamp would show. They also described the current foyers as ‘tired’ and in need a of a ‘refresh’. It is hoped the ‘modest’ extension would help generate more money amid proposals from the authority to reduce grants to the arts sector by £1m a year.

Birmingham has become a Halal diningout hotspot, thanks to the success of global food group, German Doner Kebab. 6

DECEMBER 2018

GDK opened its first restaurant in the city center just over a year ago, at 84 Bull Street. The mouth-watering combination of succulent lean meat, signature sauces, and hand-made bread has proved to be a winner. So much so, a second outlet opened recently and there are plans for a third in the very near future. The two newest GDK branches are attracting great interest at 548-550 Moseley Road and Astle Park, West Bromwich. Prposals to increase the number of GDK restaurants in the Birmingham area by several more in 2019 are currently being drawn up. There are many reasons why the German Doner Kebab experience is proving so popular. Here’s what some of the regulars say: “For a start, it is a restaurant chain as opposed to a traditional kebab

takeaway. So we can enjoy our meal in comfort.” — Adam. “As a practicing Muslim it’s great to enjoy such lovely food knowing it is halal.” — Tariq. German Doner Kebab is a global food phenomenon with over 70 branches worldwide. There are currently around 30 branches in the UK and this figure is set to nearly double by the end of 2019. A spokesman said: “We take a healthy and nutritionally-balanced approach to the traditional kebab. “Our kebabs are done right, with only the leanest succulent meat, hand-made bread and signature sauces which define our unique taste. “We are constantly innovating and recently we introduced the Doner Burger, Doner Quesadillas and Doner Nachos, all of which are very popular.”

Pushkar wins Best Restaurant in the Midlands at the 2018 British Curry Awards Christmas came early for Pushkar with their second British Curry Award win at the 14th annual ceremony on Monday 26th November at Battersea Evolution, London. The fine dining Indian restaurant based on Birmingham’s Broad Street was one of 20 restaurants to be shortlisted in the Best Restaurant, West Midlands category. Dubbed the ‘Curry Oscars’ by David Cameron, the British Curry Awards honoured the unsung heroes behind the UK’s favourite dish. The black tie awards ceremony was attended by the greats of the curry industry such

as Enam Ali MBE (also the Founder of the British Curry Awards) and a few famous faces; comedian Russell Brand, TV presenter Hardeep Kohli, former goalkeeper David Seaman as well as political figures such as Nigel Farage and transport secretary Chris Grayling. With approximately 25 million curries being consumed each week, the British Curry Awards has become a key fixture on the UK social calendar, lauded as a national institution in its own right as the first and landmark event to celebrate the industry’s achievements. The nomination process invited members of the

public to nominate their favourite curry restaurant for a deserving accolade. Pushkar’s Creative Director, Rai Singh, comments “We’re absolutely over the moon to have won the best restaurant in the West Midlands at The British Curry Awards 2018! I’d like to thank everyone who has supported us through the years, especially given the difficulties we have had to face. We could not have done this without the amazing team behind Pushkar who have consistently managed to overcome challenges and work harder than ever!”

Kongs a New retro arcade bar opens in Birmingham

Birmingham’s newest craft beer bar has opened as a juicy-burger hot spot. It could also become a hip new music venue on the doorstep of Victoria Square, too. Burgers, craft beer, retro games, ping pong and live music plan mean happy customers will be all the range at Kongs bar with Burger Theory! Kitchen. The stripped-back ‘urban’ look at Kongs is about as intentionally minimalist as you will find anywhere in town. Operations director Toby Stringer says: “Coming here is all about chilling out and having lots of space. “We are not about getting people ‘smashed’ and offering lots of deals.” In fact, if you’ve got a smile your face and a pleasant demeanour, Kongs will even let you in at night if you are wearing ‘scruffy’ trainers and shorts... Toby adds: “You can be quite ‘scruffy’ and still get in if you are a nice person. “You can dress how you want – we look for personality, not what’s on your feet.

“We are not a standard bar, more for young professionals from 20 to 40 / 50." Bristol-based Burger Theory! will be the ‘resident kitchen’ at Kongs, which replaces the former Chameleon bar at the corner of Swallow Street and Hill Street. Kongs will employ some 25 staff while Burger Theory! will have seven. Business partners Toby Stringer and Max Pioli founded Kongs on Bristol's King Street in 2014. Toby is more front of house and partnered with staff, while Max makes good use of his business brain behind the scenes. Neither are food experts, which is why Burger Theory! has joined forces. By offering customers a bit of everything, Toby says Kongs' strength will be its cool vibe and package rather than one specific thing. “I wanted to open a bar and didn’t know exactly what we wanted to do,” says Toby. “So I took a bit of time out and thought ‘What I would I want? “I loved craft beer, table

tennis, music was a big thing... “But food wasn’t my area of expertise, so why not get people in who were good at that? “I thought it was a good concept, but we had to get it right and find the right people for the kitchen.” From next week, the computer games will include Namco's Japanese classic Pac-Man, which is arriving from the United States. Space Invaders is another possibility, but Toby is happy to leave the pinball machine market to Tilt in City Arcade, Union Street. To play the machines you buy tokens - it's not like playing slot machines where you are constantly pouring in good money with little chance of winning. Toby’s instinct is that food sales will be highest at lunchtime, but opening on the same day as the nearby Birmingham German Christmas Market means the next few weeks might not be the best barometer of how things will pan out in 2019.

West Midlands Police deny ‘targeting 50p Bike hire in Wolverhampton Sikh Community’ after officers are forced to leave Walsall Gurudwara City Centre

Members of the Sikh community asked officers to leave Guru Nanak Gurudwara in Caldmore after accusing force of ‘conspiring with the Indian Government’ Police were at the Gurudwara in Walsall for a recruitment day which they had a stall in the entrance area of the Gurudwara.

Police have denied targeting the Sikh Community after being asked to leave the Gurudwara on the recruitment day. West Midlands Police had been accused of ‘spying and ‘interfering in matters taking place in India’ by Sikh Youth UK members during the confrontation at the Gurudwara.

However, the force has now responded fully deny claims of targeting any group because of their ‘political, religious, racial or ideological beliefs’. Video released on youtube shows members of Sikh Youth UK giving recruitment officers from West Midlands Police their marching orders from the

Gurudwara in Walsall. The Gurudwaras committee had allowed the Polices recruitment team to set up a stall to recruit the Sikh community to join the force. But phone video footage shows Sikh Youth UK members approaching the officers and demanding they leave- which they eventually do.

A new scheme had been set to launch in Wolverhampton which allows people to hire a bike for as little ad 50p at various locations in the city centre. There are 2,000 bikes set to be available 24 hours a day, the ‘Bike Share’ project will create more than 50 new jobs for the community which will be introduced to other parts of the West Midlands in 2019. A public consultation into the initiative has just begun, with proposed bicycle bays located at the Britannia hotel, Civic Centre, the New Market, Sainsburys on the Ring Road, Compton Road, Magistrates Court, Molineux, The Way, West Park, St John’s and St

George’s. Leader of Wolverhampton City Council, Councillor Roger Lawrence said: “Cities like Amsterdam and Towns right across Europe have schemes such as this and use it as a unique way of cutting out congestion.” Cities in the UK like London have these schemes in place and is great to see Wolverhampton to be among the first places to see the bikes in action. Annual membership costing just £30 per year, meaning riders can access bikes for as little as 8p per day.

Two Cars plough into Parked Vehicles

On Tuesday 20 November a woman was taken to hospital after reports of two cars ploughed into several parked vehicles just before 9.15pm. More than eight cars were left severely damaged. One car failed to stop at the scene and enquiries are now underway to trace the driver. The woman was trapped in her car and firefighters used cutting equipment to free the casualty before she was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital. A member of the Alum Rock Community Forum shows footage of rows of

damaged parked cars, sand on the road and piles of smashed up glass. West Midlands Police said: “It is believed several cars were damaged in the collision and a woman was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries and has since been discharged. “One car failed to stop at the scene and enquiries are on-going to trace the driver.” A spokesman from West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of a four car RTC. “One ambulance a paramedic officer attended. “We treated one patient, a

Detective Chief Inspector Jim Munro, from force CID, said, “We hope that this sentence provides some comfort to the victim. “The level of violence used in the attack was shocking and he is very lucky he was wearing his helmet otherwise the outcome of this assault could have been a lot worse. “We would like to thank members of the public for their fantastic response to our appeals.“ Another man, Maneeb Shah, aged 20 of Lancelot Close, Birmingham, has also been charged with assault and will appear at court at a later date.

A man who viciously attacked a traffic warden has been jailed. The traffic warden who was on his phone to a colleague on 14 September this year, was attacked by a gang of four following an earlier dispute. Danyal Bashir, 19, of Hartopp Road, Alum Road, was part of the group who set upon the 21-yearold-traffic warden telling him he did not belong on ‘their land’. The man was then dragged from his moped on Hartopp Road, pushed over and repeatedly stamped on his head. Following the brutal assault, the group stole his moped, leaving him injured in the road. Members of the public stopped to help and he was taken to hospital for treatment and his injuries were not serious. Three mosaic memorials to celebrate 100 years since women were given the right to vote 14

Three Black Country suffragettes feature in a new art installation unveiled at Birmingham New Street station to mark 100 years since women were given the right to vote. The 'Face of Suffrage', is made up of more than 3,700 images of women. When the artwork is viewed from above, it shows Wolverhampton-born Hilda Burkitt who was a leading face from the suffrage movement in the West Midlands. Evelyn Hilda Burkitt was born in Wolverhampton in 1876 and died in 1955. She

worked at the Birmingham Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) headquarters, near New Street station. Evelyn threw a stone at Prime Minister Herbert Asquith's train as it pulled out of Birmingham New Street, after he attended a male-only budget meeting and she was imprisoned at Winson Green prison. Another two women from the Black Country have also been honoured including Emma Sproson, the first female councillor for Wolverhampton, who was part of the women's suffrage movement, and Mary

Macarthur, from Cradley Heath, who have both been honoured by posters on pillars in New Street Station. The mosaic is made up of a combination of historical pictures of women from the West Midlands in the early 1900s and images of females today using photographs submitted by the public to be part of the commemoration. The mosaic was created by artist Helen Marshall, of the People's Picture, who has inputted similar projects across Britain marking other historic occasions.

Birmingham Museum closure delayed until after 2022 Commonwealth Games which will be hosted in the city. Earlier this year it had come to light that the Museum and Art Gallery at Chamberlain Square was due to shut its doors October 2019 in line with wider redevelopment of the council house. However, staff of the Museum have been told that will not be the case and the closure will be delayed.

A statement from Birmingham Museums Trust said: "Birmingham City Council are proposing to reschedule their modernisation works on the council house complex until after the Commonwealth Games in 2022. "This will mean that Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery will no longer be closing in late 2019. "This does not change our ambitions to redevelop the museum. "We will continue to plan the

new displays and public facilities so that work can begin on site sometime after 2022. "Thank you to everyone who visits and supports the museum. We will keep you updated on our exciting plans." Birmingham Museum confirmed the latest developments would have no impact on the plans to build a new multi-million-pound museum on the former Poolway Shopping Centre in Yardley, which sounds very exciting.

Winning Apprentice and overall Apprentice of the Year: Ahmed Munshi, BAE Systems Talented young people, their employers and learning providers from across the UK gathered at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham, as the winners of this year’s Asian Apprenticeship Awards were announced. From over 300 nominations, awards were presented in 8 sector categories, 2 employer categories and the overall Learning Provider of the Year and nearly 500 people attended the event. Jasmine Kundra, from this year’s BBC The Apprentice line up, was the guest speaker. A learning and development professional, she is a firm champion of developing skills and spoke passionately about the need to empower individuals to learn, grow and widen their career horizons. Ahmed Munshi of BAE Systems was named as the Apprentice of the Year. Ahmed is based in Preston and is in the penultimate year of a Higher Apprenticeship in Project Management. The five year programme leads to an Associate Project Management qualification and degree in project management. While his family hoped he would take the traditional route to university, Ahmed’s thorough research into Higher Apprenticeships convinced him it was the perfect combination of academic qualifications and work. Judges chose him as the overall winner because

he has become a real role model within his company and his community. This year he has successfully mentored 9 school and college students alongside his work and studies. In his entry he wrote: “The apprenticeship has enabled me to improve my personal qualities, to be a more well-rounded individual, not simply from an occupational perspective. BAE Systems has helped me to become socially conscious, participating in activities that go beyond my dayto-day work life. I strongly believe a person should wake up in the morning with two feet on the ground and feel that they are making a difference to someone’s life.” Head Judge Olga Bottomley commented: “There were some extremely high quality entries, and we had a very difficult decision choosing the overall Apprentice of the Year. In the end Ahmed won because he has not only embraced working life and his studies, making a substantial impact on the performance of BAE Systems, he also has an incredibly strong social responsibility ethic. “He had to persuade his family of the wisdom of applying for an apprenticeship, and since that point he has become a fantastic ambassador for his company and apprenticeships more widely. He works closely with his

local mosque and he mentors other young people. He is truly someone to watch as his career develops. Congratulations to him!” The overall Learning Provider of the Year was named as JTL. Established in 1990, JTL is one of the largest work-based learning providers in England and Wales, working with around 3,000 businesses in the building services engineering sector. Registered as a charity, JTL supports approximately 7,700 young people in four apprenticeship disciplines – Electrical Installation/Maintenance, Plumbing and Domestic Heating, Heating and Ventilating and Engineering Maintenance. With a reputation for setting high standards, an impressive 80% of their learners get their qualifications every year. JTL has worked tirelessly to attract more girls and people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities into the industry, work which has won them positive acknowledgement from OFSTED, recognition as Equality Champions by the former

Learning and Skills Improvement Service and the prestigious GOLD award standard from Equality Accreditation Services. Isa Mutlib is the Awards Project Director. He commented: “We were pleased to recognise JTL for their quality of training, and particularly for their retention rate for black and minority ethnic apprentices. At 90%, it shows the quality of ongoing guidance and support apprentices receive from JTL, and we are pleased to recognise their efforts by naming them Learning Provider of the Year. “The Awards was a spectacular event and really celebrated the brightest and best British Asian Apprentices and the commitment of their employers and learning providers. “We hope we have encouraged more young British Asians to consider apprenticeships, and more employers to provide opportunities to benefit from the skills that apprentices bring. We are grateful to our headline sponsor, the Royal Air Force, for their support in running the event.”

he world of football is mourning a true hero, a legend, a role model and some would say a game changer for diversity of football today. Hundreds of people from ex-footballers, supporters, family paid tribute to the former West Bromwich legend Cyrille Regis 59 who died suddenly, on 14 January. A celebration of his life was held at the Hawthorns Stadium where he started his football journey – and what a journey he had. His family entered the ground to Chris Love singing Bring Him Home from the musical Les Miserables. Fans paid tribute with chants of "Nice one Cyrille, nice one son", and "There's only one Cyrille Regis". Regis's widow, Julia Regis, told the crowd: "Cyrille treated everyone like they were the most important person he ever met." She received a standing ovation after paying tribute to her "lovely, caring amazing husband".

Stocks and oil surge as Trump calls truce in China trade war Financial markets give their reaction to hopes that trade spat will prove less costly than feared to demand in the global economy. Stock markets are rallying worldwide after the US and China agrees to suspend new tariffs in their trade war to allow for peace talks. Us President Donald Trump- who initiated the spat with the world’s secondlargest economyannounced at the weekend they would postpone tariff increases due in January for 90 days. This decision was made following the meeting at the G20 summit in Argentina with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, who promised to buy more American exports in exchange for the delay for the increase in tariffs. President Macron Visits Arc de Triomphe after riots in Paris

More than 400 people are arrested in Paris as 133 people, including 23 police officers, are injured during fuel tax riots. Frances president has visited the graffiti-damaged Arc de Triomphe after hundreds of people were arrested during the country’s worst riots in 50 years. Police in Paris said 23 officers were among 133 people who have injured since violence flared on Saturday afternoon. Out of the 412 arrested, 378 are in police custody, while the interior minister Christophe Castaner said about 3,00 people were suspected of taken part in the riots which has been the worst unrest since 1968.

Activists dressed in hi-vis jackets torched cars, smashed windows, looted stores and vandalized the Arc de Triomphe as thousands took part in the protest rising fuel taxes and President Emmanuel Macron’s liberal economic reforms. A government spokesman said France would consider imposing a state of emergency to prevent further unrest and is urging peaceful protesters to get around the negotiating table. The protested erupted out of the blue on 17th November in reaction to rising fuel taxes. Social media playing a key role in enabling hundreds of people to quickly gather in cities across France with Paris being the most affected.

Three Mums Organised Shoplifting of Designer Clothes

Three Asian mothers from Blackburn travelled 80 miles to the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet in

York where they were caught shoplifting designer clothes worth over £2,000. Razwana Ahmed, 39,

Nazia Shazad, 37, and Nargis Noreen, 31, all of Sanders Road, Blackburn have been jailed for 16-weeks.

However, eight days into their sentences they all appealed to have their sentence overturned. Staff became suspicious of the group and the police were called and managed to stop them making a getaway. They were found to be in possession of £2,379 worth of Hugo Boss clothes and a security de-tagging tool. Earlier this year all three women appeared before Burnley Magistrates where they were convicted of stealing £650 of household items from Boundary Mills in Colne. Following that offence Ahmed was banned from entering Boundary Mill the store for six months and ordered to complete a 15-day

rehabilitation. She was also told to pay £100 costs and an £85 victim surcharge. However just five weeks after magistrates passed down those sentences the trio travelled to York where they went on their designer goods shoplifting spree. Their barrister Andrew Petterson put forward their appeal said Haq had six children, including a threeyear-old with 'significant medical problems', Ahmed had four including one with epilepsy and two with learning difficulties and Noreen had two, the oldest of whom was five. He said: "Consideration could be given now to the imposition of a suspended sentence, given they

have now had their first unpleasant experience of a custodial environment." Judge Paul Worsley QC, sitting with two magistrates, took two minutes to dismiss their appeal. He said: “It was organised, carefully planned shoplifting. We regard the sentence imposed as a lenient one, not harsh.” Speaking about when they were handed the community orders for the Boundary Mills offence, Judge Worsley added: "That was the time to say ‘we mustn’t commit any offence which would put us in jeopardy of going to prison’. That sadly they have now done.”

Prestigious ABCC President’s Medal awarded to Principal of South and City College Birmingham

Mike Hopkins

South and City College Birmingham’s Principal, Mike Hopkins has been awarded the President’s Medal at the 31st Asian Business Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) Annual Awards and Dinner. Mike, who has been the Principal at the college for 11 years, was awarded the title in recognition of his leadership in the education sector and his charity work. Mike has successfully steered the college through two mergers between the former South Birmingham College and City College Birmingham and most recently with Bournville College. The college now has eight campuses across the city, which serves around 22,000 students and employs over 1,200 members of staff, making it one of the largest employers in the city. In addition, he has raised over

£300,000 for good causes, including Teenage Cancer Trust, Macmillan Cancer Support, Help Harry Help Others, Promise Dreams and Cure Leukaemia. On receiving the award, Mike said, “I was so surprised to hear that I had been shortlisted for this award and even more surprised to win. I’m humbled by the comments I’ve received since the award. I don’t see this as recognition for me, but for the college and the people who along with me make it successful. Everything we do at the College has students at the heart and I’m pleased that the Asian Business Chamber of Commerce has recognised our commitment to students and to the communities in Birmingham.” Qasim Majid, ABCC president added, “Mike is not just the Principal of

one of the largest and most successful further education colleges in the region, but a strong leader with relentless determination, driven by the success and achievements of students. “An enthusiastic and selfless leader, Mike has made a huge impact on the disadvantaged community, and has often gone over and above the call of duty for the benefit of others. “He is the ideal candidate to receive this year’s President’s Award, as he demonstrates the leadership, drive and diligence which other leaders should emulate to achieve success.” South and City College Birmingham also sponsored a new award category, Outstanding Diversity and Inclusion Award, which was won by the accountancy, tax, legal and advisory service firm, Mazars.

The Continuing Success of Jeff Bezos

Jeff Bezos

I've just seen an article in Entrepreneur.com that attributes Amazon's astonishing success to three principles: 1. Accept occasional failure as the price of innovating. 2. Work every day like it's your first day in business. 3. Give your customers what they want before they know they want it. They seem very sensible and can be boiled down to: keep on learning; keep a lean and hungry culture; really understand your customer's needs and keep them loyal.

I would never even dream of comparing myself to Jeff Bezos but I really wonder if he came up with this list of three and what would be mine? Another one of my businesses, New Edge Interiors, picked up an award last night: The Midlands Enterprise Tile Retailer of the Year. That's three awards in a week so I must be doing something right (the other two Awards were Downtown in Birmingham's Man of the Year and Recruitment Company of the Year for

Ex-Forces Recruitment). So here are my three principles: 1. Persist - never give up, endure, grit your teeth and get on with it until it is done. 2. Listen to your gut and never to naysayers. If they don't have skin in the game their opinions don't matter. Your intuition is what counts. 3. Find people who share your dream. That is your team. Find the right mix of loyalty, challenge and skills - it makes you unstoppable.

Perry Barr development clears another hurdle as council announces principal contractor B irmingham City Council announced the appointment of Lendlease Ltd as principal contractor for the Perry Barr development. The development, located on the site of the former Birmingham City University (BCU), in Wellhead Lane, will accommodate around 6,500 athletes and officials during the Commonwealth Games in 2022, and will be known as the Commonwealth Games Village, before being used to provide 1,400 new homes for the area. Demolition of the former BCU buildings started in June and is due to complete shortly. Proposals for the development, due to be considered by the council’s planning committee next month, include an Extra Care village for older people, retail and commercial space,

and a new community centre. Lendlease has a rich history in delivering infrastructure and sporting venues for international events and were the development and construction management partner for the London 2012 Olympic Village. Councillor Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “It’s great to have Lendlease on board. They have an unmatched track record of delivering major projects like this on time and to the highest quality. I’m pleased to welcome them to the team and I have every confidence that they will work well with us to deliver a development that will be used for the Commonwealth Games Village that we can all be proud of in 2022 and

beyond.” Waheed Nazir, Birmingham City Council’s Corporate Director for Economy, said: “I’m delighted by the progress we have made in delivering this fantastic scheme which will transform the heart of Perry Barr. We have made great strides since the Commonwealth Games were awarded to Birmingham in December 2017. In less than a year we have assembled all the land we need for the residential component of the development, nearly completed the demolition of the BCU buildings, designed the new development, submitted a planning application, and now appointed a principal contractor. This really does show how the public sector can deliver major redevelopment schemes at scale and pace.”

This is the all-new sophisticated Range Rover Evoque, which has been unveiled at an event in London and is on sale now, with first distributions expected in spring 2019. Prices for the new Evoque start from £31,600. The second generation of Land Rover’s popular small SUV gets a fresh platform, a cleaner look and mild hybrid technology across most of its range, in a bid to be more efficient and match the sophistication notably of the Velar, while also answering existing Evoque owners’ calls for more room in the cabin and a bigger boot. It also channels the three-door ‘coupe’ model to become five-door only. Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern says the car’s looks are “meant to be unmistakably Evoque, while being unmistakably the new Evoque”. Key elements, such as the clamshell bonnet interrupted by the bulging front wheelarches, and the ultra-slim rear glass area, have been retained. But there’s a much cleaner look along the Evoque’s flanks, with flush door handles (as seen on the Velar) and a less

complex surfacing on the doors, with none of the horizontal creases of the Mk1. The end result is a car that is clearly still the Evoque, but one that has a more grown-up, more sophisticated appearance. This is helped further by an increase in wheel sizes; the new car’s alloys range from 17 inches up to an optional 21 inches. The new Evoque is on sale now, although the first cars won’t reach customers until next spring. The range starts with the £31,600 150PS front-wheel-drive diesel manual - around £800 than Land Rover has been asking for the equivalent edition of the outgoing generation. The same engine with an automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive starts at £35,100, while the petrol versions start at £35,950 for a 200PS auto 4WD.

Midlands Golfer Rai Wins First European Tour Title

Wolverhampton born golfer Aaron Rai held off fellow Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick in an impressive one-shot victory at the Honk Kong Open. It earned him just over a quarter of a million pounds in prize money, and cemented his place as one of golf’s upand-coming stars. "It's incredible,” said Rai. “It definitely hasn't sunk in just yet. I'll probably need a

few days for that to happen. "It's incredible to win on any Tour, let alone The European Tour and let alone the Hong Kong Open. Rai broke the course record in the second round with a nine-under-par 61, and went into the final day with a six-shot lead. Rai said "Matt played incredibly all day, it was tough but again, I really just tried to play the

course as much as possible, rather than Matt, or anyone else who was playing well. "I luckily managed to do that for most of the way around. It's tough considering the situation but I'm very pleased.” Rai has won three Challenge Tour events in 2017 but this is his first European Tour title at just his 46th appearance.

Indian’s opening batsman Gautam Gambhir announced he is to retire from all forms of cricket The 37-year-old lefthanded opener won both the World T20 in 2007 and the World Cup in 2011, top-scoring in both finals, during a 12-year international career between 2004 and 2016. "This may sound a little wishful but I've seen wishes come true. Two World

Cups, highest run-getter in the final of both of these games is the stuff dreams are made of," Gambhir said as he announced his decision on social media. Gambhir will retire after Delhi's Ranji Trophy match against Andra Pradesh.

BodyBuilder Shah Receives Award at UKBFF Federation A Birmingham bodybuilder Syed Rahat Ali Shah is the first Asian to receive the men’s physique British champion Award 2018 at the UKBFF Federation and was in the top 6 at the Arnold Classic Europe in Barcelona. For Shah, bodybuilding has been a tough career to maintain in an asian community. This is due to the pressures surrounding it. Bodybuilding has never really been a major movement in my culture, therefore for me to pursue this was unheard of before. The Bodybuilding community is extremely motivating due to competition and desire to be the best. Everyone has the same goal, to win, therefore it is a very competitive environment. However, people are willing to help you as much they can. Without disciplined you will never achieve your goal. Set your goal, keep doing hard work with discipline. Make sure you diet, train and get enough sleep and hopefully

you will see a big difference. Prep-coach Nick Duffy Fitness said “Working with Syed Rahat Ali Shah, has been a whirlwind set of events with both ups and downs, physically but also mentality, the way contest preparation always is ‘if’ you’re working extremely hard round the clock. He came to me with the desire, passion and dream to win the UKBFF British Finals Masters Men's Physique. With my experienced expertise and support, alongside his uppermost self-discipline, motivation and willingness to bring the best shape to shape he ever has, we won the British Finals alongside a Top 6 finish at IFBB Arnold Classic. I have great respect for Syed Rahat Ali Shah, although difficult at times, for such a commitment to his dreams and next time we'll be peaking for the Arnold Classic towards winning his category.”
