bu Garcia has this series of rods that I love; the Fantasista series. Soon to come is the all new Fantasista Aurora. Fans of Abu Garcia will remember a reel called the Abu Garcia Revo Aurora, a beautiful reel designed by Abu Garciaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Japanese product team years ago. Lovely. 13

Combination Of Two Greats

The Fantasista Aurora is a combination of both using the strength, lightweightness, sensitivity, and feel of the Fantasista rods, and the beautiful colours of the Revo Aurora reel. Combining both of them brings about a very beautiful rod that fishes really well; like a well designed exotic super car, the kind of car you go to when you get bored of the Ferrari.

Well Balanced

The Fantasista Aurora is a very well balanced rod. It is lightweight and goes well with light weight reels. I tested the rod with my favourite spinning reel, the Pflueger Patriarch. It was certainly a match made in heaven.

High Quality Components

The Fantasista Aurora comes with high quality components by Fuji. It comes with the beautiful Fuji TVS reel seat that allowed for more feel and better sensitivity. The Fantasista Aurora uses Fujiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new concept KR guides (Semi Micro Guides) of which provides for the added advantage of tangle free fishing.

Good Sensitivity

The Fantasista Aurora is made using high quality graphite blank that is lightweight and provides for high levels of sensitivity. Combining it with the Fuji TVS reel seat adds for better sensitivity as it allows for more contact to the blank.

Field Test

The Fantasista Aurora cast exceptionally well. With a tip that has very low amounts of wobble during the cast, every cast is confident and accurate. Casting distance is also very good getting very good distances.

Fish Management

The Fantasista Aurora manages the fights well too. We took our Medium Light (ML) action rod to do battle at the barramundi pond in Jugra, Selangor. We battled a few good sized ones weighing close to 2kg and it has enough backbone power to easily manage them. Definitely more than enough power needed for a swift victory.

Summary

The Abu Garcia Fantasista Aurora is definitely a rod I will definitely get for my fishing. It is lightweight, sensitive, cast well, fights well, and it looks darn good. No reason to not get one other than the issue has to do with a tiny bank account and shallow pockets. 21

Pflueger Supreme XT

flueger has always been on the lighter side of things and the same thing can be seen with the Supreme XT of which Pflueger claims to be the lightest in its class. Its â&#x20AC;&#x153;light weightinessâ&#x20AC;? is achieved with the use of a magnesium body and rotor, lightweight carbon fibre handle, and ported aluminium spool.

Modest Design

When it comes to design, the Supreme XT is modestly designed. Not too flashy and not too loud, this reel may not create a commotion but its subtle metallic candy orange linings on the gun metal coloured aluminium spool, and the sporty looking light weight handle holds hints of its character. 25

Casting Abilities

The aluminium spool comes fitted with rubber which allows braided lines to hold on too and not slip. The Supreme XT is not a sleeper. With braided lines filled in it is ready to take on fights and the tough aluminium spool is not one to crack under pressure.

Smooth Performance

The Supreme XT is a smooth performer. It is smoother than some of the reels that carry a higher price tag. The smoothness is unlike some of the more high end reels that feel almost vacuum like. There is a hint of connectivity of the handle to the gears. Just a hint. 27

Ready For The Sea

The Supreme XT comes ready to take on the finned creatures of the sea. It comes with 10 HPCR (High Performance Corrosion Resistant) bearings to resist the corrosive qualities of saltwater, and a sealed carbon fibre drag system that blocks out water, and provides for what Pflueger claims to be a 14lb max drag on this size 40 reel.

Lab Test

Back at our lab we put the Supreme XT to the test. With a 14lb max drag target we pushed up the drag and the torture begun. It easily touched 14lb and then it maxed out at 18.5lb; very impressive. The drag remained smooth with no sticky feel. 29

Field Test

To test the Supreme XTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prowess in the real world we brought it to the Natural Exotic pond in Rawang, Selangor (Malaysia). We pitted it against the some of the hard fighting predators that lie in wait for a battle. We cast our baits near the pillars of the restaurant that sits on them.

Good Control

The Supreme XT had a few fights being able to manage the Amazonian red tail catfishes that took our bait. There is enough drag to pull the fishes out of the danger zones. The drag is also smooth even on high drag. There was no sign of stickiness from the drag even after a few fights. 31

Summary

The Pflueger Supreme XT may be a modestly design reel but when it comes to fishing, it is by no means modest. It is smooth (both cranking and drag), it has a strong enough drag, and it fights well. One more thing I like to add is that it lays lines in the spool well too. So, here you go... a reel in a simple modest package.

plit rings are used all the time by anglers especially those that use lures, jigs, and spoons. Needless to say good quality split rings are essential as some brutes are powerful enough to open up split rings especially those of lesser quality. Needing good split rings for a jigging trip we decided to try out Decoyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Medium Class split rings.

Tough & Strong

Decoy developed a tough stainless steel wire called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hypower Stainless Steelâ&#x20AC;? and this wire is darn tough. Opening the split ring requires more force as compared to the usual split rings of which is a good sign that the split ring will hold its ground even with higher pressure.

Field Testing

We chose the class #5 of which Decoy claims can handle pressure of up to 60lb; more than enough strength needed to battle the diamond trevallies (ebek) of Pekan, a coastal town situated at the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Battling Brutes

Of course jigging is just an action used to entice a fish to take the metal jig. Nothing scary or worrying. It is when the fish takes the lure and heads to the bottom like a pile driver that oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prays that nothing goes wrong and everything holds on and stays in tack. That includes the split rings.

We were onto fish taking on hard fighting diamond trevallies that took our jigs and no matter how hard the battle, the split rings held on without opening. We did not lose any jigs or fish due to failure of the split rings.

Battling Brutes

Having confidence in your fishing tackle is very important allowing you to battle with gusto. Knowing that everything from the reel, lines, rods, all the way down to the terminal tackle is in good condition and shape will certainly give one the confidence to battle well. The Decoy Split Rings certainly did well.

ecoy Plus Guard VJ-75 jighead is a softbait anglers dream come true especially since it is weedless. It comes with a super sharp hook (I actually got hook accidentally not once, not twice, but three times) that easily latches on to skin (penetrates easily), finger nails, plastic spoons, wood, etc. 57

Saltwater Torture

First we wanted to see how it will do in saltwater. We placed one in a container of saltwater for over 24 hours. After over 24 hours we removed the jighead for inspection and found no rust. We ran it through a plastic spoon and it caught on confirming that it still remains sharp. 59

Field Test

To test the Decoy Plus Guard VJ-75 jighead we took some lighter action tackle (since the jighead is for finesse fishing) and headed to some barramundi ponds. Since these ponds are known to have specimens from about 700 grams to about 2kg, I think the Decoy Plus Guard VJ-75 can handle them. 61

Good Fit

I decided to use my old trusty Abu Garcia Revo Premier reel with the new Abu Garcia Bass Beat II rod rated light; for this test. For bait I used my all time favourite Berkley Powerbait 1 inch grub. For test I used the Decoy Plus Guard VJ-75 size 3 weighing 2.5 grams that fits the grub well.

Hook Strength

We hit a lot of fish and the hook penetrated the fishâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lips easily. We lost quite a few fishes too as they managed to throw the hook. Increasing the drag pressure helped improve the landing rate. We also lost a few good size fishes due to the hook opening up. We had to turn the fish away from the water wheel and the added pressure caused the hook to open. 63

Verdict

The Decoy Plus Guard VJ-75 jighead does what it is designed to do well. It is super sharp penetrating the fishes lips easily. It is weedless of which is great especially when fishing for fishes that hideout in weedy areas. Step past its limits and it opens up of which is good and bad. Bad because you lose a fish. Good because it is easy to pull free when snagged. Bend the hook back in shape and continue fishing. 65

donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know about you but new toys always get me excited and I am excited right now. I am excited because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen things; lovely and delightful things. I have seen the new Revo reels by Abu Garcia that will be launched in 2018. Here are some information about them.

REVO4 X

Let us start with the REVO4 X; the darkest reel amongst the lot. This is certainly Batmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reel should he be an angler. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get me wrong; the REVO4 X is a good looking reel. It looks dark and sporty. It comes with 8 bearings and it feels lightweight. It certainly is a smooth operator turning smoothly. The REVO4 X is certainly one fine reel although it stands as the entry level REVO4 model.

REVO4 S

The REVO4 S comes with magnetic brakes called the MagTrax™ brake system that helps anglers fine tune their casting to the baits that they are using. They come with 8 ball bearings for smoother operations. But what I like is the “Gull Wing™” sideplate that allows for fast and easy access into the braking system.

I have not used the reel but having a play with it, the reel feels smooth and lightweight. It sits in my palms snugly as with all the other REVO4 models. It comes in black and white like a Storm Trooper from Star Wars.

REVO4 SX

The REVO4 SX reel was the only one I tested. Casting it is easy as it comes with both; a centrifugal braking system and a magnetic braking system. I even taught someone who has not used a baitcaster to cast using the REVO4 SX and he was casting within 10 minutes or so (after a few tries).

The REVO4 SX operates smoothly allowing for smooth easy casts and retrieve. I felt like a bully fishing this pond bullying fishes here with drag power that is said to be the most powerful in its class. Enjoyed fishing this reel.

REVO4 STX

The REVO4 STX reel is one other smooth operator. It comes with 11 bearings providing it with smooth operations. It comes with the â&#x20AC;&#x153;flying armâ&#x20AC;? type centrifugal braking system called the Infinitely Variable Centrifugal Brake (IVCB-6L) with 6 arms. This is a proven system that makes casting easier with good distance. 99

The first reel I used with the IVCB braking system was the Abu Garcia Revo MGX and it cast really well earning it a place amongst my most like reels. That was then the IVCB-4 with only 4 arms. This has 6. I am certainly wanting to try this out.

REVO4 PREMIER

When it comes to REVO reels the first one that I owned was the REVO Premier (first generation). That was my favourite reel many years ago. It was lighweight and it cast so very well. It was my constant companion everywhere I travelled to, to fish. This new PREMIER certainly brings up the warm fuzzies. The REVO4 PREMIER is lightweight and it feels refined and looks elegant with a dash of sportiness. It is a black reel with gold trimming giving it that touch of elegance. It comes with a bent carbon fibre handle giving it that sporty look. It operates well with smoothness and perhaps grace.

REVO4 INSHORE

REVO4 INSHORE is one of the reels made for saltwater fishing. There are a few other saltwater reels but perhaps will only be made known later when the folks at Abu Garcia are ready to. The INSHORE is one of the proven saltwater low profile baitcasting reels with good casting abilities and fish fighting power. That said, it is not a brute of a reel nor does it look like one. It is a refined saltwater player that operates smoothly; something like racing a sedan such as a Tesla Model S P90D against a Porsche 911 Turbo. The P90D is a lot faster off the start but the 911 Turbo finishes first. The INSHORE is like the P90D being fast and more refined but lesser in power thus providing with longer fun battles where as the 911 Turbo (REVO WINCH for example) being the brute; is slower off the start but finishes faster with brute power. 119

REVO4 WINCH

Now we come to brute force; the REVO4 WINCH. The WINCH have been a staple powerhouse in Abu Garciaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s REVO range. This low ratio powerhouse of a reel is made to battle the tough fighting brutes of the sea. I have landed numerous sailfish on earlier generation brutes with no issues. This new WINCH feels rigid and tough. It certainly is a sturdy reel built tough to handle hard fighting fishes. With the longer handle and larger knob; the WINCH certainly carries on the heritage of earlier generation REVO WINCH.

It is when one’s mind is relaxed and when one finds that inner peace that one’s mind is free to imagine and think at a higher less cluttered level.

Recently my family and I visited the Cyberview Resort & Spa in Cyberjaya, the Silicon Valley of Malaysia. Despite being in the hub of technological start-ups and businesses, the resort sits in a quiet place surrounded by nature. It felt like we were holidaying far from civilization. Walking into the lobby one is mesmerized by the fragrance of flowers (jasmines); a soothing aroma that relaxes. It brought about a feeling of calmness as I sat for awhile at one of the sofas with my eyes closed enjoying the sound of the water fountain while I waited for my wife and kid. Well Designed Room After checking in we drove to our room; a Superior Chalet. The room has a contemporary modern plus retro look and is well designed. It comes with a walk-around wardrobe that is uniquely placed slightly off middle of the room acting as a divider between the beds and the vanity area. Pic: The wardrobe and vanity area.

The bathroom comes with an egg shaped bath tub made of ceramic with a faucet that looks more like part of a water feature instead of just a tap, bamboo ladder designed tower rack, glassed shower area with rain shower, and a wall with holes that allows light from the sun to come in. Comfortable & Delightful Our room came with a king size bed and a single bed. If you like softer beds, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve found heaven. The beds are soft and comfortable. They feel plush; like sleeping on a huge teddy bear. The pillows I believe are filled with goose downs giving one the ability to adjust it to oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s liking. If you do not know how that is done; try getting the feathers to one side of the pillow and giving the flat area of the pillow a few folds. Now you have a harder pillow with a higher setting.

That night, with the air-conditioning simulating the temperatures in the highlands during the rain, I slept very well on the comfortable and plush huge â&#x20AC;&#x153;teddy bear,â&#x20AC;? with my head resting snugly on the comfortable pillow. Delicious Food

We had our meals at the Verandah Restaurant a Pan-Asian restaurant & Xing Zhu, a restaurant that serves Chinese cuisine. There are other outlets like the Bistro Cascata that serves Italian cuisine, and Karma Bar & Lounge but we did not dine there. Perhaps on a future trip.

Verandah Restaurant The Verandah Restaurant serves a mixture of local, Asian, and Western cuisines. There are lots of food here that I like but these are the few that I love most. I loved the streaky beef bacon and had them for breakfast every day during our stay. It was cooked really well remaining juicy and not too salty. It goes really well with scrambled eggs.

The cold dish; fresh prawns and mussels served on ice, is yummy. Fresh crunchy prawns and mussels eaten without seasoning gives one the natural flavours of their meat. This can only be served with fresh seafood and Verandah has it. Lovely.

Japanese cuisine is another thing that I like. Unfortunately I have been told by my doctor to stay off whites (rice included) due to health reasons. But I could not resist sushi rolls. Instead of devouring lots of them, I decided to devour â&#x20AC;&#x153;not so lotsâ&#x20AC;? of them.

They have lots of other foods too including the very delicious beef stew with tender beef cuts, ayam masak merah (spicy chilli chicken) that is really tasty, ikan bakar (grilled fish) with tasty chilli paste, Indian food such as roti canai, noodles with soup, etc. There are also lots of delightful desserts like chocolate cakes with macaroons, yummy cream puff, etc. I ended every meal with fruit ‘rojak’ a fruit dish in a sauce made of prawn paste mixed with chilli and sugar. Not everyone will agree to the taste of ‘rojak’ sauce as it is quite pungent. But those who do will be floating on cloud nine here at the Verandah Restaurant. Pic: I love rojak.

Dim Sum And More Dim

m Sum Another type of food that I love is dim sum. We had dim sum buffet at the Xing Zhu Restaurant. I have eaten ‘halal’ dim sum at many places but these here certainly beats them all. Xing Zhu serves the best ‘halal’ dim sum (to me). The meat is juicy and tasty with its flavours well wrapped up within. Pic: The Xing Zhu Chinese Restaurant.

While all of them are delicious my favourite is the ‘siew mai’ or ‘shumai.’ They are juicy and tasty. The texture of the chopped meat is tender and nice. Mushrooms that are part of the mix gives them additional flavours creating a lovely ball with flavours that explodes in one’s mouth. Oh, so delightful.

Fun In The Sun

Cyberview Resort & Spa has a very lovely swimming pool that flows down two levels into a wading pool. This is one of the hot spots for those who like swimming and splashing in water. I do too but I needed to stay away from the sun as my skin was still raw from a bad sunburn sustained during a fishing trip two days earlier. Pic: The lovely swimming pool.

Sembunyi Spa

With relaxation being high on the offering, the Sembunyi Spa is a must visit. We did that and had an amazing relaxing time. The area is cosy and inviting, giving it a true spa environment. Remember earlier I wrote about decluttering the mind; my mind when into a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Zenâ&#x20AC;? state and felt like I was floating on air. Relaxing in the Jacuzzi for a few hours and wading amongst the bubbles in the warm water was so refreshing. I returned to my room and my thoughts were clearer being somewhat stress free. Other Information Cyberview Resort & Spa was built for the purpose of hosting the APEC Summit back in 1998. The resort has a few luxurious and lovely suites that were designed to house heads of states that stayed there during the summit. I visited some of these suites and I recommend them to those who want to be pampered like royalties.
