Why study this subject?

• You will participate and gain confidence in 3-Dimesional prototyping in a range of modelling materials, such as card, foam, and clay. • You will develop key skills in 3-Dimensional design, both physically and digitally. • You will develop your enthusiasm for prototyping and making functional spaces for theatre and architectural design. • You will develop your ability to work creatively and in response to a design brief set by an external client. • Careers could be pursued in architectural design, interiors design, theatre and set design, film and prop design, ceramics and glass design, sculpture.
What will you study?
• You will learn creative and practical skills and develop your competence in working with a range of materials. • You will learn critical and analytical skills which enable you to experiment and to explore creative possibilities, and to become confident in taking risks by learning from mistakes when experimenting with ideas, materials, tools and techniques. • You will develop personal attributes including problem-solving, creativity, self-confidence, resilience, self-discipline and perseverance.
These qualities will enable you to produce creative, expressive, and personal work in response to themes and starting points set by the department. In addition, to creating architectural and set design pieces, you will work have the opportunity to work in two or more of the following areas: Ceramics, Sculpture, Casting, CAD work.
How will you be assessed?
You will be assessed by your portfolio and an externally set assignment. The course does not have a written exam.
Assessment 1 – Candidate Portfolio (60%)
Controlled assessment. Portfolio to be produced in a specified time showing your response to set themes and subject matter set by the department.
Assessment 2 - Externally Set Assignment (40%)
• A creative response to ONE question from the assignment material issued in January of the second year of the course by the Exam Board. • You will have a preparatory period followed by a time-limited Supervised Task Period (exam).
