In Suzanne's Words

Our summer readers are predominantly divided into those who can travel, and those who have responsibilities keeping them in town. As part of the latter group, I can say that there are opportunities to experience rubbing elbows with the international jet set even if we can’t experience getting away from it all. Live entertainment of the international ilk is under the spotlight at Crystal in W, with edgy Parisian musical duo Brahms and Co. Ranin El Shaar will not disappoint with her international lounge music covers at Madison Piano Bar at La Cigale Hotel and James Kent teams up with Doha Jazz at Habanos in the Ritz-Carlton to bring us be-bop classics. Laughter Factory is back with its popular monthly London based comedy as well at the Ramada Plaza. Qatar’s own Philharmonic Orchestra has something new with a welcomed children’s program of activities and workshops including performances of Hansel and Gretel and special performances to teach children about the orchestra. If you are in the mood for regional roots, Sealine has a barbeque accompanied by live Arabic music. Whether your travels take you on a jet plane or just around Qatar, stay safe.

Ritz-Carlton Spa

Feature

A Very Manly Affair By Jessica Davey-Quantick Real men get facials. And massages, manicures, pedicures, and a litany of scrubs, rubs and spa treatments. Pampering isn’t just for women, anymore. Qatar Happening sent several guy-spies out into the wilds of the Doha spa scene to hunt down the who, the what, and most importantly the why of men’s spa treatments. “We have the same treatments available for both men and women such as facials, massages, body treatments, manicures and pedicures,” said Jennifer Schlicht, PR and Marketing Communications Manager at the Doha Marriott. 9

Feature

Their spa is just one of the many in the city now offering treatments for men. Some, like the Six Senses Spa at the Sharq Village and Spa, have even gained a reputation as being the ‘it’ place for men to go get pampered. Others, like the spa at the Ritz-Carlton Doha, offer treatments specifically for men, with an entirely separate spa wing for Y chromosomes. But the question is, why? “Why do guys go to spas? Because it’s relaxing,” said Brian, one of our spa-flying-monkeys. He’s a long-time spa-goer, but in what he describes as a ‘super manly way’.

Six Senses Spa

“I go because I like to escape. It’s nice to be pampered sometimes,” he said. That’s actually one of the things that may make spa-ing (as the word has now become a verb) in Doha more accessible to men than in other parts of the world. Country laws here prohibit treatments by opposite gender technicians- meaning that a massage on a man will be performed by a man. For some guys, this is a relief that the subtle strains of Billy-the-happy-goatherd’s panpipes on the sound system can’t provide. Which is why many treatments for men are marketed for health, not for beauty- focusing on relaxation and destressing. “Most guys aren’t as conscious of appearance. I think most girls go to beautify, but stress relief I think is the driving force for men,” said Brian. 10

11

Feature

It’s that perception that keeps many men hovering in the doorways of spas till their female counterparts usher them in- one of the most popular treatments at many spas in Doha are couples packages, where there’s someone there to hold your hand and guide you into the world of spas, as well as a girly sidekick to blame the whole thing on if you should run into one of your mates.

Six Senses Spa

“I think it’s because most people think spas are solely about primping, they forget that there are other treatments there. The perception is that it’s about hair and nails and being pretty, but it’s not really about that,” said Brain, who admittedly has very well-kept hands like many men in Doha. However that’s something that’s changing. “More men are coming now to the spa because they are now more concerned with their health and their looks, they are more self conscious and have accepted the fact that spas are not only for women anymore but for men as well. In our spa, the male therapist that does our treatments for men gets busier and busier each day,” said Schlicht. That’s true of most spas in the city, where the men’s treatments are hopping, and calling ahead is a must. Many men go for the entire package- a facial to ease tired and sore skin, effected by the heat and humidity of Doha, body scrubs to remove dead skin, mani-pedis for frankenhands and hobbit toes, and even waxing for that smooth look. Want to know more? Get the inside scoop on what it’s really like at men’s spas, when our guys go undercover and reveal all in our blogs! 12

www.qatarhappening.com/off-the-press

Feature

Most spas also offer packages for men, where technicians recommend a series of treatments. Unlike women who are more comfortable usually asking questions and cherry picking exactly what they want from spa menus, men are often more comfortable with a set selection.

Six Senses Spa

Representatives from the Ritz and the Sharq both agree as well that their gyms are big draws for men- once at the spa, it’s easy to partake of their fitness facilities and classes, and many men will include a spa treatment after their workout. “I also go to spas so I look younger than I do!” joked Brian, but that’s also a top-spa reason for many men, for whom aging gracefully is taking on new definition. But just like women, the main reason to go to a spa is stress relief. “You always feel refreshed with a new sense of energy after a spa day. You want a place you can go and escape from the world- you just go and think about you, or nothing at all. Not work, not life, not have any of that stress around you,” said Brian. That’s an idea that would have anyone, regardless of gender, braving the pan pipes. Edible Arrangements Fiona Murray If a box of chocolates or a bunch of flowers seem a bit passé, then there’s a new gift idea in Doha, which has to be seen to be believed. They look like stunning, brightly coloured bunches of exotic flowers, but then you do a double take and realise you are looking at a bunch of... fruit. Edible Arrangements is an American franchise that has branches around the world, from Puerto Rico to England and now Qatar. The concept won its founder, Pakistani-born US resident Tariq Farid, the 2009 Entrepreneur award in the States. The first Qatar branch opened just six months ago on the Salwa Road near the Midmac flyover. The second store will open in Gharaffa this month. Qatar General Manager Janah Ghraizi says he’s delighted at how well the business has done. 14

Spotlight on arts

“People get tired of giving a box of chocolates or flowers, this is different. We have special designs for everything – if someone is ill in hospital, for a baby boy or a baby girl, for a wedding.” His team, who make all the arrangements on site with fruit specially imported from around the world, has just worked two days straight making 220 table decorations for a wedding at the Sheraton. “Everything is very natural, there are no chemicals,” said Janah, showing off the large kitchen where the petal shapes are cut by machine. The ‘flowers’ themselves are assembled by hand and then made into elaborate arrangements.

The idea taps into Qatar’s love of gift-giving and new found concern for healthy eating. The arrangements are made with pineapple, melon, grapes and strawberries - although, the healthy eating idea slips a bit when you get to the chocolate dipped versions. The pineapple daisy petals with a ball of cantaloupe melon for a middle, looks pretty impressive. Hidden surgical foam anchors the decoration, with lettuce providing a bit of background greenery. Some fruits, like mango, are just too soft to use and bananas and apples are dipped in chocolate to prevent them from spoiling. The arrangements come in an array of china bowls and baskets, you can even get them in little china ducks or elephants which are children’s money banks. You can also get boxes of chocolate dipped fruit smothered in nuts or coconut. But, hey, there are still vitamins in there, too. Brahms and Cö By Jessica Davey-Quantick Under a fluffy afro and Parisian accent beats a brain that managed to combine DJ beats with swinging trumpet, throwing in a little Arabic oud for fun. This is Brahim Mandich, one half of the performance duo Brahms & Cö, who’ve been lighting up the stage at the W Hotel Doha since March, and just signed up for the rest of the summer. The other half is Cörentin de Vos. But while his half of their name may seem like an afterthought, he certainly isn’t- his trumpet flair is what pushes them away from the rest of the DJ pack. “Brahim is a DJ, and I’m a musician. Together we have a live performance that starts very slow, laid back, soulful, and then we build it up to a harder beat, like house music,” said de Vos. “We met on stage. Both of the events there, there were people missing, so the organizers put us together. It was the start of our love story!” he jokes. 19

Spotlight on entertainment

Since they met six years ago, they’ve traveled all over the world, to rave reviews and have become known as a standout act in an oversaturated DJ world. “For us, we used to see DJ’s and it was a little bit artificial- they don’t interact. We try to be a real live act,” said Mandich. “Our set is very evolving.”

Over time, their act has evolved, not just while on stage, but influenced by the countries they’ve visited. “Brahim is a vinyl collector so we try to find music in all the cities we go to and mix them with beats,” said de Vos. “We love it. We’ve met some musicians here in Doha, we go out to the desert and jam. Arabic music is very rich and complex, and very different from western music. It’s traveling through sound and music.” “It’s the people that make the country,” said Mandich. “So it’s been very good here- you can meet people from everywhere!” But it’s a journey they strive to keep accessible, especially here in Qatar where a portion of the music-loving public might be turned off by the bar atmosphere of many DJ events. “The emphasis is on the access of culture, the meeting of east and west not on the clubbing and drinking. People come and just listen, get into it, and enjoy,” said de Vos. DJ Brahms & Cö hit Wahm in the W Hotel Doha every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in July, and will be returning after Ramadan. They’re also currently recording an album of their music in their hotel room, which will be available in 2010. For more information, call 453-5353. 20

Spotlight of sports

Exercise in the Heat By Fionna Murray Keeping off the Doha pounds is hard work, and it gets considerably harder when the temperature is climbing towards 50 degrees. Fiona Murray asked UK fitness coach, Graeme Pattison, for tips on keeping fit and keeping healthy. If you find gyms deadly dull and you prefer to exercise outside, then summer in Qatar presents a special challenge. Mad Dogs and Englishmen... Keep out of the sun between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and exercise in the shade whenever possible. Lots of parks have shaded areas where you can do stretching exercises. Try switching your exercise routine to dawn or night-time. 27

Spotlight of sports

Take It Easy Scale down how you exercise and adapt it for the heat. If you like running, give your body a chance to acclimatise to the temperature. Walk for a couple of minutes, then gently jog for a while before running any faster.

Hot and Sticky The heat isn’t the only problem in exercising here in the summer. When the humidity kicks in during July and August, it really taxes the body, too. It makes you sweat even more and increases your fluid loss. Also, with so much water in the air it makes it much harder to breathe when exercising. So, again, reduce and modify how you exercise when the humidity is high. Listen to Your Body Be very conscious of how you feel. Stop exercising at once if you feel dizzy or faint and douse yourself in water. Don’t underestimate the effects of dehydration: it can be fatal. Graeme recommends using a heart monitor to gauge how your body is coping with exercising in the heat. It lets you work out what is a ‘normal’ racing heartbeat caused by exercise, and when your body is overstressed. Be especially careful if you are very overweight or have health issues such as heart disease. And don’t exercise if you already have a temperature from a virus or infection. If in doubt, talk to your doctor. 28

Spotlight of sports

Dress for Success While sun cream is important it can inhibit sweating. And the evaporation of sweat is one of the body’s important mechanisms for lowering your body temperature. Instead of wearing a sun cream, Graeme prefers wearing special long sleeved sportswear that has a sun protection factor. It prevents the sun’s rays from burning you, but also lets the body sweat. Don’t forget a hat. And forget so-called weight loss aids like rubber suits, they don’t work and can be dangerous.

Water, Water Everywhere We all know about drinking water during exercise, but drinking before you even pull on your trainers is just as important. Graeme advises drinking about 7-8 mL of water per kg of your weight – so if you weigh 70 kg you should drink about half a litre. Do this within two hours of working out. While you are exercising take regular drinks – about 3 mL per kg of your weight, so about 250 mL if you are 70 kg. Drink that every 15-20 minutes. Don’t forget to keep drinking a lot after exercise, too or you’ll get a monster headache. Generally, in this heat, you should drink at least three to four litres a day. Water is best, avoid fizzy sodas, but special sports drinks like Pocari Sweat can help replace electrolytes salts and minerals- lost through heavy duty sweating. Catch Him If You Can By Jessica Davey-Quantick Tom Collins is back.

qatarhappening.c for recipes!

And he’s talking about you. Not much is known about him, other than that he has a lot to say. Usually about you, or someone you know. And he spends a lot of time out, in bars, restaurants, and clubs. Oh, and that he's completely made up. 134 years ago in 1874. “It was this one little bar in New York that started the conversation. They had someone who’d go around saying ‘have you seen Tom Collins? He’s been talking about you’ and people would start going to these bars and asking for Tom Collins,” said Lauren Fryer, Director of Public Relations at the Ritz-Carlton Doha. This month, the Ritz puts the myth back in the spotlight, with a selection of Collins-themed cocktails in Habanos, including a viral marketing campaign to rekindle the gossipy-magic. There’s some debate about who and when the drink was invented- some think it was a waiter in London named John Collins. Others think it was simply a sly promotional tactic by a bar to lure customers in, demanding to see Tom Collins, and then present them with a drink. Either way, it was one of the first viral marketing campaigns, sweeping across the United States to become known as the Great Tom Collins Hoax of 1874, staring a fictional Where’s Waldo and sending the population off on Carmen-Sandiego hunts all over the country. 34

“Viral marketing people just assume it’s a modern day thing, viral marketing only came out with social mediums, it’s only come out with the internet, it’s only come out with online chats and twitter and things like that,” said Fryer. “But to think that so many years ago they came up with this concept!” And it worked- the legend had people scurrying fast in all the major cities, with newspapers diving in reporting his location, whereabouts, and the events of the search (as can be expected when herds of young men and bars are involved things often got exciting).

But if Tom Collins had a hometown, it’d be New York. The hoax “belong[ed] to New York, where it was played with immense success to crowd houses until it played out,” wrote the Steubenville Daily Herald in 1874, “frantic young men rushed wildly through the streets of the city on Saturday hunting for libelous Tom Collins.” Today, viral marketing is a necessity- there are seminars to teach people how to use twitter, facebook, sms and a thousand other technological wonders to get their message across. Subversive ads like the ones run by Volkswagen in the 1970’s, underground pop culture explosions like the buzz surrounding the Blair Witch project in the 1990’s, and even political campaigns like the one run by American president Barack Obama owe a lot to the pioneering efforts of syrup and soda. “It all started with a drink! And to think in 1874 they were actually playing this hoax on people, it’s incredible.” For more information on the promotion, call 484-8000. 36

Gourmet guide

By Jessica Davey-Quantick I have never met a chickpea I didn’t like. And the Lebanese Lunch at the Four Seasons gave me ample opportunity to dive into a vat of perfectly spiced vegetarian deliciousness and paddle around for a while. With several different, traditional types of hummus, as well as other delectable Arabic salads, I was in mushy, garlicky heaven. Chef Najwa brings a little taste of Lebanon to Doha with her traditionally prepared fare, including the vast and astounding salad buffet of the last paragraph. While Middle Eastern food isn’t exactly scarce on the ground in Doha (considering we’re in the Middle East and all), Middle Eastern food done well can be hard to find. Put it under a gorgeous majilis-style tent decoration and give me access to a buffet, and it’s even better. The buffet style makes it a perfect place for people new to Lebanese cuisine to try it on for size, and a great place to linger with friends while munching on course after course. 39

Gourmet guide

Best of all however is Chef Najwa herself, who prowls the dining room, available to answer questions, explain dishes, and even suggest items for you.

We started our meal with a selection of Lebanese appetizers, including falafel that was crisp on the outside and perfectly spiced on the inside, as well as other bite-sized snacks filled with intriguing mixtures of spices (Lebanon gets points for having the guts to put something that tasted surprisingly like cinnamon in meat). That was quickly followed up with the salads- fattoush and baba ghanouj and mutabbel oh my! Because of the buffet atmosphere, I was able to sample things I hadn’t tried before, like fried halloumi cheese and spiced fried cauliflower. All of this was followed up with mixed grill, lamb chops, and meatballs, all rounded off with traditional Arabic sweets. The real star of the show though was the lentil soup. A creamy mixture of spices, I could have spent all day slurping this back, and was disappointed I didn’t stumble across it till the end of my meal, when I was already too full to eat more than one bowl. I highly recommend beelining for a piping bowl first thing, no matter how hot it gets outside! The Lebanese Lunch is severed every Saturday at Brasserie on the Beach at the Four Seasons Doha from noon till 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 494-8888. 40

Sports Camp By Fiona Murray Keeping kids occupied when the thermometer is nudging 50 degrees can be quite a challenge. You can only gaze longingly at the lovely Aspire Park as you whizz past in the car, heading for yet another indoor play-place. So it’s always good to hear of classes like Playball which provide air-conditioned fun with a difference. Designed for small groups of children aged two to eight, it’s a coach-led range of fun, imaginative games, which helps children’s coordination and confidence. “It’s very active and lots of skills are taught – there’s a lot of running, kicking, bouncing and hitting balls with a stick, baseball bat, a hockey stick... and there’s lots of bouncing and catching and throwing,” says South African Annalize Tibshraeny, who runs the classes in Doha. Children spend so much time in front of the TV these days that any exercise they get - other than running up and downstairs from the kitchen - is beneficial. “Now it’s so hot they get cooped up inside. At Playball they get to run around and have a good release of energy. The side benefit is they learn skills like bouncing a ball, which doesn’t come naturally to most children; it’s something they have to learn.” 52

Kids club

Playball was devised 25 years ago by South African tennis coach Russell Wobbe. He noticed that children who were good at sport, were generally more outgoing, popular, confident and assertive than those who lacked sports’ skills. The idea behind the structured activity is that children learn life skills through learning sports skills. That’s true, she’s seen her two and three-year-olds’ class, the ‘2 Can Do’ class, steadily grow in confidence.

“And the toddlers have become very independent. It’s been wonderful over the whole year to see how the little ones develop from having mum right there, to having mum sitting behind them on the sofa just watching.” There are only six to eight children in each session, with the ‘Watch Me @ 3’ class for three to four-year-olds; ‘Dinkies’ for four to six-year-olds and the ‘Preps’ for the six to eight-year-olds who are preparing for bigger things. Annalize say she started the classes because she thought it would be a great activity for her son Liam, who is about to turn four. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work out as planned. “He is very attached to his mummy and he wasn’t so good at sharing me with the other children!” she laughed. However, last week Liam tried Playball again and was so captivated by the games that he forgot his mummy was the coach. “He was fab. He loved it so he’ll definitely be going again.” Classes run at Qipco compound in West Bay and Alfardan Gardens 1 on the D Ring Road. There will be special summer sessions in July. To find out more call Annalize at 506-2169 or email playballdoha@yahoo.com 53

QH Recommends

Moving On It’s that time of year – new jobs are starting, old jobs are ending, new villas are on the market, and you’re left staring at boxes and suitcases, resisting the urge to roll around on a pile of bubble wrap. It’s moving season, and in the sweltering heat of a Doha summer, it’s more than just a daunting task. “This is the peak season. There are many people who are coming to start their new jobs here. So this is our big season,” said Omar Sares, Sales and Marketing manager at Qatar Logistics, a relocation company. The most important part of getting through the moving season with as little trauma as possible is the planning. If you’re tackling the task solo, the first thing you should do is break out pencil and pen and make a list, detailing what you’ll pack and when. Make sure to leave aside a last-night survival kit, with anything you may need once all the boxes are sealed. Whether you’re moving internationally or just across the street, you want your things to arrive unscathed. Bubble wrap is more than just for fun, and newspaper is an old standby (and cheap to acquire). However, you may want to think about using clean newsprint paper to protect your goods – the ink on regular newspapers may rub off. Be careful about tape selection – professional packing tape is the way to go, and available at most stores. Then grab that pen again and get labeling. Keep lists of the content of each box, so you can know exactly what’s in each carton. This is also a good precaution if you’re moving internationally – you’ll know immediately if anything is missing or lost. Which is where companies like Qatar Logistics come in – many people, faced with lists, boxes, and bubble wrap would much rather just let the professionals handle it all. There are many companies available for both national and international moves, who’ll pack your goods, move them for you, and even unpack them at the other end. And they’ll make sure to bring the right tape. For more information check out www.qatarlogistics.com 56
