THE OPENING Twenty-ninth Edition – February 2014

SH*T HAPPENS! What a beautiful day - a day that nearly ended tragically… Muizenberg is one of my absolute favorite destinations and I decided to go for a well-deserved swim on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The waves were beautiful, the water warm, crystal clear with lots of people and a few surfers about. And then it happened... The board hit me without me even seeing it coming, full out in the face straight into my nose. It came completely out of nowhere! An accident can happen SO quickly, in a literal blink of an eye! For a moment, I sunk under the deep blue with seconds of my life ticking by before me. As I resurfaced, blood everywhere, I brought a hand up to my face instinctively and realised that there was a gaping wound where my nose was supposed to be! I was rushed by friends to the Tokai Medicross where fortunately I knew the doctor on duty. Dr Rienkie who made one call after having a look at my injury and informed the Somerset West Medi Clinic that I was on my way. She explained in detail that plastic surgery was necessary to ensure I recovered my dashing features…! My heart was beating out of my chest with adrenalin rushing through me. Trauma does crazy things to you and my mind was beginning to race, but I continued to stay calm, thank goodness. The few hours before going into surgery were painful ones. Luckily I was surrounded by loved ones which helped, but I was concerned, anxious, and just scared stiff! On the way to Somerset West I was consumed with thoughts about how I would look after the op – its incredible to realize how fickle one can be when faced with superficial drama. Needless to say, my DEKAT front page shoot was canceled on my way to hospital. So my nose was broken in two places but Dr Jan Kleynhans was absolutely remarkable and today I am almost back to normal and looking as good as ever! Looking back at this ordeal, I am reminded of a Groom who went for a game of golf the morning before his wedding with his best man. Murphy’s Law played alongside them and rewarded him with a golf ball straight to the face – the day before the biggest day of his life… Then there was a beautiful Bride who stepped out of her vintage ride with two thick black tyre marks across the back of her incredible wedding dress... As she entered the quaint stone chapel in Hermanus she looked back at me for reassurance and, like a fairy godmother, I told her “Look straight ahead” while I tugged the trail, stylishly covering the horrible marks. Hundreds of weddings flash through my mind thinking about crises in the making, and I am also reminded of my own not so best man performance at the wedding of renowned photographer and artist Joe Dreyer! I lost the Groom’s speech, had on brown socks instead of black ones, forgot my belt, and then the marriage certificate disappeared!

In summary…shit happens! Always have a contingency plan - make sure a vintage car is in immaculate condition from bonnet to tyres and with the polish on the wheels completely gone! Try and avoid any encounter which can cause serious bodily harm, however innocent it might be.

Cheers to the last few weeks of Summer!

But the safest bet would be to hire The Aleit Group on your special day to allow us to create the Wedding or Event of your dreams and allow us to sweat the small stuff! You can be assured of our expert advice and skill in every situation - except when it comes to surf board stunts, we clearly have no hope here!

THE OPENING // 5

Photographer : Inecke Photography

You are the latest addition to the Aleit Event Projects team and are also an Aleit Academy Alum. How would you say being a student at The Aleit Academy has prepared you for your current career? I believe being part of the Aleit Academy beforehand prepared me for my current position tremendously – it was almost like a three year test run to see if I would really enjoy this path or not! The Aleit Academy course is so comprehensive, consisting of both theory and practical components. Having the opportunity to intern at entities within The Aleit Group as well as at companies within the event industry, gave us students real insight into how this industry truly works. I was fortunate enough to intern with some amazing people who are now my mentors and who were part of the process in moulding me into who I am and where I am today.

FEATURING VICTORIA FRANCK CLEGG Victoria Franck Clegg is one of The Aleit Group’s enigmatic latest additions to the events team. As she is situated in Johannesburg, we caught up with Victoria via e mail to get to know this gorgeous lady a little better. Being based in the Johannesburg office your day to day is a bit different to that of the Cape Town project managers. Give us a peek into a day in the life of Victoria. What makes you tick? Life in the Big City is different which is great! My alarm goes off ridiculously early in the morning - this gives me time to catch up on emails and the news on Twitter in bed. After some light exercise (no, not really), a hearty breakfast (there is not much time to eat here) and a shower I get ready for the day, depending on what I have to do. The Johannesburg team is not office-based as we are on the road a lot - attending meetings and site inspections, executing events or travelling. We all still have a lot of work to do and emails to catch up on, and that is often done from our home offices, a coffee shop or from within the car. There is a lot of pressure up here to get things done quicker and more effectively, which is quite motivating. What makes me tick? The will to be better than yesterday. What is your current favourite driving playlist? I spend so much time in my car, music is of vital importance. To beat the city traffic blues I have a lot of up-tempo tunes playing – anything from Steve Aioki to Avicii. Currently “Ladies Man” by Classy Menace plays in my car about 23 times a day! I am however a more chilled out person and I listen to a lot of alt-J, Al Bairre, Kongos, James and Muse which is more in my character. You have been with The Aleit Group for a few years now as both student and project manager, in this time you have worked at numerous weddings and events. What has been your highlight event, and why? The caliber of events and weddings that The Aleit Group executes makes it incredibly difficult to pick

one. In my second year, I really was in awe of Babette and Hans’ wedding. The amount of detail that went into that wedding really inspired me and as a student it was a big eye-opener into the world of endless possibilities. The Springbok Engagement Sessions were incredible for me too as I had my first taste of true responsibility at both of them. A personal favourite event of mine was a recent team-building event – I had 5 days from the brief to execution and it turned out pretty great. What do you miss most about living in Cape Town… and what is your favourite thing about living in Johannesburg? The things I miss the most about the Mother City are the scenic views and my dear friends! The mere fact that I could load up a car full of mates, take a 10 minute drive to the beach or a wine farm makes me miss it incredibly and I feel exceptionally blessed to have lived there for some time. I do, however, love the constant vibe in Johannesburg – the rush and energy of the big city sends an electrifying pulse through my veins, it’s indescribable. Why event management? Why did you choose this career path? I never really knew what I wanted to do actually. As a kid I considered being a doctor, interior designer, marine biologist and even a landscape gardener! It was a constant battle to choose but in essence I knew I wanted to do something both business-like and creative. I absolutely love the feeling of accomplishment, the feeling of seeing your ideas and tasks on paper being transformed into something tangible. This has translated well into the events industry – seeing a brief on paper and then the event in full swing is a great feeling. I am fortunate that being within the corporate events industry there is a fantastic balance of being both logical and creative – utilizing both the left and right hand side of my brain. At the end of the day, I cannot see myself doing anything else. EMPLOYEE // 7

EVENTS | TEAMBUILDING WEEKEND //

TEAMBUILDING WEEKEND AT KIEVITS KROON ESTATE AND THE BLADES Pretoria saw an influx of delegates in early February, when the Aleit Event Projects team hosted a two day event consisting of a full day conference and lavish cocktail dinner at Kievits Kroon Estate on day one, followed by exhilarating teambuilding at The Blades on day two. The event in its entirety was formed around teamwork and trust. Guests spent the first day engrossed in a full day conference inside the De Kasteel venue. The baristas from Coffee Creations made sure that they had their fix of caffeine for the long hours ahead of them, which was certainly put to good use! Once the formal part of the day had come to an end, the guests made their way into the Bedouin tent that was sprawling across the entire courtyard. Plush lounge furniture was styled in an organic and natural fashion, while beautiful flowers in an array of colours completed the look. Boston Breweries added to the atmosphere with their pop-up craft beer bar, offering a variety of different beers to choose from. The running theme of this event was related to the sport, and art, of rowing – and this translated into vinyl oars spread across coffee tables and bars, while a motivating presentation was given by one quarter of the Rowing Men’s Fours Team, who won gold in London, in the form of Matthew Brittain. He gave an incredible presentation of how much dedication and grind went into preparing for such a spectacular race, and this certainly sent a feeling of goose bumps across the floor, and also ensured the guests were excited for the following day. Day two saw the guests head over to The Blades for a full day of team-building activities. Some members of the Olympic Rowing Men’s Fours Team were on hand to show them how much team-work, trust and dedication goes into making the boat glide at speed on the water. Others enjoyed the rock-climbing wall, archery and volleyball, while the less adventurous guests treated themselves to massages atop the deck overlooking the water.

Magazines and copies of The Sunday Times were also on offer for those opting for a more peaceful Sunday. The Blades’ team of chefs provided a scrumptious array of tasty meals, fresh from the coals. This was undoubtedly a weekend to be remembered.

EVENTS | MINING INDABA //

THE ANNUAL MINING INDABA Every year one of the events that we look forward to most is certainly the Annual Mining Indaba Cocktail event. This year’s prestigious event was hosted at the beautiful Shimmy Beach Club, in Cape Town. The theme for this event was an exploration of the different geographical and ethnical uses of Gold. Oversized ornate mirrors, Gold candelabra, elaborate settings and an 8 meter raised seating counter dressed in a string of large naked bulbs added to the already stylish setting. Floral installations were designed to accentuate the Gold styling rather than distract from it. Two massive Gold frame and ribbon installations were suspended from the detailed crystal chandeliers in the center of the room, creating a hanging Gold mirage. The décor was certainly not the only memorable aspect of this event – Shimmy Beach Club’s delicious canapé menu tantalised guests’ taste buds. Guests were treated to Sushi platters, Avo and Prawn cocktail, Crostini with roast Vegetables, Beetroot soup, Southern fried Chicken drummettes, Vegetable Samosas with Coriander Chutney, Prawn tails, small Bamboo boats of fried Calamari, Wild Mushroom and Artichoke Risotto and a Malay Chicken Curry, followed by a desert of Crème Brûlée and baked Vanilla Cheese Cake. After an evening of decadent fine food, spectacular views, and a chance to chat to Springbok Rugby captain Jean de Villiers and renowned player Schalk Burger, guests returned to their hotel rooms to rest for the next day of the intriguing Mining Indaba.

EVENTS | MINISTER'S DINNER //

MINISTER'S DINNER 20 Years of democracy definitely serves as reason for celebration and that is exactly what happened when we put together this celebratory event for 800 guests. For the pre-dinner drinks area we used the colours of the South African flag and 'painted' the flag in the bedouin tent with the use of pillows, flowers and other dècor items. This set a very patriotic atmosphere for the event from the very beginning Usually, the first challenge with 800 guests is how you can make the seating process more effective. So we decided to dream up then 8 of our very own local 'heritage sites'. These sites consisted of the following: Nelson Mandela O.R. Tambo Table Mountain Moses Mabhida Stadium Traditional Huts Mapungubwe Cave Drawings Johannesburg Skyline Union Buildings These heritage sites were separated from each other by a differet look and feel to each one. The first being a white opulent look with round tables. The second was an indigenous look with proteas and earthy colours with rectangular tables. We used oversized lampshades which had the insignia of each heritage site on it. These shades hung above each 'heritage site' assisting guests in finding their table quickly and easily. The event was also a highlight for A Place who very proudly provided the dÊcor. They worked tirelessly for weeks before to get everything ready, furniture was custom made and it all went off quite well. Congratulations A Place on pulling off your biggest event to date.

WEDDINGS | LARA & JACO //

LARA & JACO LAURENT, LOURENSFORD ESTATE How did you experience your wedding day? It was truly overwhelming to be surrounded by so many people who cared so much about us. Jaco and I were like little kids on Christmas Eve all evening -smiling, laughing, dancing and celebrating. It sounds cliché, but it was really the most special day of our lives thus far ☺ How did you meet? We did our honours together in 2006 but only really started interacting when we both went to Deloitte for our articles the year thereafter. He was the cool kid at the back of the class and I was the loser in the front ☺ What was your best moment of the day? Jaco says his favourite was signing the register as then he knew all the official things were done and we could just celebrate. For me it has to be seeing him at the bottom of the aisle waiting for me, I wanted to skip down the aisle! Something good or great about us :) I like to be in control and stress very easily – so from a young age I vowed I would try eliminating those characteristics on my big day. The Aleit Group has exceeded all my expectations. They gave me no reason to stress and provided a service of such excellence that I felt no need to be in control. The Aleit Group and all their service providers offer a standard of service delivery you don’t see that often anymore. It astounded us! Our families, guests and Jaco and I still comment on how exceptionally smooth the day went. We all just enjoyed ourselves whilst they took care of the details. Best decision ever!

WEDDINGS // 35

Tell us more about the honeymoon We went to Mauritius for 10 days and it was heaven on earth. We chatted endlessly about all the small details of the wedding, I obviously stared at wedding pictures for many hours, played some golf, ate, drank wine, slept, read but mainly just enjoyed our first few days alone as husband and wife. What advice would you give to other Bridal couples tying the knot soon ? Try not to stress, although easier said than done. Jaco and I sneaked away a few times during the evening and stood quietly by ourselves outside staring in at our guests and then absorbing the breath-taking scenery. I would suggest something similar as the time really flies by.

FEATURES | THE ACADEMY //

NEW BEGINNINGS As we are still in the early beginnings of a new year, it's great to look to the future and what the youth has to offer. We are especially interested in what the Aleit Academy youth has to offer and therefore have a few exciting projects for them to work on over the next few months... Charity projects, community projects, socials and the like. Staying in the vein of a NEW year with NEW students, we thought we would focus of all thats NEW – how about a NEWborn baby! Our MD Hans Roosenschoon is about to become a first time Daddy and he is over the moon! First on the cards for Hans and his beautiful, expectant wife Babette, was a full Maternity photo shoot done by the renowned Inecke Photography at Lourensford Wine Estate. What an exquisite day it was with the sun shining and birds singing! The dam on the farm was the perfect location and Hans and Babette felt fight at home straight away. Their two Beagles, Mila and Abby were also in tow and running riot in and out of the water taking full advantage of the freedom and warm swimming weather. They did, however, stop to pose for a quick pic or two! We then decided to put together a Baby Shower for Hans’ beautiful wife Babette at Vergelegen Wine Estate on an equally stunning Saturday morning in early February. Babette arrived to masses and masses of pink hydrangeas and white stocks on an elegant long wooden table with glistening touches of gold. Before being seated, guests were treated to a chilled glass of Vergelegen Brut MMV Limited Release on the beautiful green grass in the dappled sunshine. With the flashing of polaroid cameras, guests leisurely took pics and filled out forms giving the Mom-to-be words of advice for her special time ahead. Upon entering the venue, a delicious 3 course lunch was served which the ladies dove into. Babette was then showered with gifts for her little bundle of joy to come!

FEATURES | SKIN RENEWAL //

TURN BACK THE CLOCK WITH A 3D LIQUID FACELIFT Spokesperson: Dr Xen Ludick is a Medical Doctor with a special interest in anti-aging procedures, skincare and weight loss. He is part of the team at Skin & Body Renewal. More and more people are opting for ways to restore their self-love and personal appearance as they grow older, while also remaining relevant in the work place. It’s a fact that others judge us by our looks and age. Research shows that people are often biased in favour of tall, good-looking and youthful people. You can’t alter your height, but you can take measures to halt or reverse the aging process which starts with your skin and particularly your face. Dr Xen Ludick, a Medical Doctor with a special interest in non-surgical, anti-aging treatments at Skin & Body Renewal clinics says the anti-aging industry has advanced dramatically over the last 10 years. In the last five years we have seen an increasing number of people looking to reverse the signs of aging. “Thankfully we now have the ability to deliver ageless skin without the extreme and invasive strategies of the past. Medical advancements have given us a plethora of anti-aging techniques, treatments, lasers and gravity defying creams. Understandably, most people, who are becoming too afraid to look in the mirror, don’t know where to start.” According to Dr Ludick, the most effective nonsurgical procedure for turning back the clock is the 3D Liquid Facelift. “It’s the latest development in non-surgical, antiaging procedures. It restores lost volume and returns the face to its youthful, multi-dimensional proportions in a natural looking way,” she says.

Dr Ludick explains that as people get older, they can see their faces begin to sink and sag, but most do not recognise that it’s due to volume loss. “Surgery can reduce this laxity by pulling the skin and underlying muscle upwards and outwards, but this procedure falls short in the area of replacing lost volume. It’s this lost volume that causes the aged, sunken appearance in the first place. So it makes more sense to fill the face, restoring it to its three dimensional appearance, rather than cut it.” So just how does this new 3D Facelift work? “The aging face is downwardly mobile; however, certain areas of the face are more mobile than others. If we divide the face into three horizontal panels it’s the middle section, below the eye all the way to the jowl-line that’s the most mobile and therefore displays the most aging. We use the outer less mobile sections, near the ear and nose, to anchor the placed volume to lift and hold the mobile tissues in a lateral position,” says Dr Ludick. He says, “We start by carefully examining and diagnosing a patient’s unique and often imbalanced aging characteristics. This ensures that as volume is used to lift the face, the natural facial balance is preserved. Next, we map out the face to identify the negative areas that need to be counter-balanced with volume. The face is then lifted by the strategic placement of volume using dermal fillers that contain a high viscosity and elasticity such as Juvederm Voluma which holds the soft tissue in position and can last up to two years thanks to the newly incorporated Vycross technology. The fillers are

then gently blended with the surrounding tissue for a smooth result. To end the procedure, the patient is put under the PDT/LED light to reduce any chances of swelling. The added bonus of this technique is, the filler encourages the body to form its own new collagen over time which maintains the lift, giving a longer lasting result.” “Typically the 3D Facelift is done on the bottom half of the face,” says Dr Ludick. “To soften frown lines on the brow and reduce the appearance of crow’s feet, a wrinkle-relaxing treatment in the form of a natural protein called Botulinum toxin is used. It’s injected into the facial muscles and reduces the nerve impulses from reaching them causing the muscles to relax. With Botox/Dysport, the brow and temples can be elevated, eyes can be opened and lids lifted. Multiple clinical studies have shown that a modest brow elevation occurs in the range of 1 to 3 mms which, in the face, can be a make a real observable difference.”

“Up to 45 we can complete our 3D Facelift in one sitting. From 45 to 55, I would recommend two sittings.” However, he warns, a surgical facelift may be your only option if you leave it beyond 55. So what about the risks of this 3D procedure? “The risks are minimal compared to surgical approaches,” says Dr Ludick. “We can now use a ‘magic needle’ called a Cannula. It reduces the chances of bruising and swelling and there’s far less discomfort for the patient. The actual filler used to restore the 3D effect is produced by human genes inserted into a bacterium for reproduction. It is a highly conserved protein meaning that its genetic composition is almost exactly the same in 97% of the animal species. This significantly reduces the incidence of any allergic reaction. Dermal Fillers have been used in millions of patients for more than 10 years with a very low occurrence of side effects.”

“The results from this 3D technique plus the Botox are immediate and impressive, taking up to ten years off a person’s appearance. The results are also more subtle and natural looking than a surgical facelift.”

Dr Ludick says the 3D Facelift is an extremely technical procedure and can only be carried out by an experienced and highly trained aesthetic Doctor with a knowledge and understanding of the muscular anatomy of the face and extensive training in injectables and exact placing.

Dr Ludick says the 3D Liquid Facelift can be done in the space of a lunch hour and has minimal downtime, but, he recommends different treatment frequencies depending on age.

“If people, around thirty-five, opted for more preventative non-invasive procedures - a new trend would develop resulting in a very different type of ageing than older generations,” says Dr Ludick.

IN CLOSING //

TO END IT OFF What a week the last week of February has turned out to be, filled with life changing occurrences at The Aleit Group. Our Group Managing Director Hans and his lovely wife Babette welcomed their first born baby girl, Juliet. Ryno our Director – Venues also known as “Mr Blue Eyes” proposed to his long-term girlfriend and now fiancé J-Lo. It is with a great pleasure that we welcome the two extended Aleit Group family members. Now that February, known as the “love month” has drawn to a close it simply means we are winding down the first quarter of the year. One memorable and most insightful event thus far for the year is the Corporate Insight Seminar that was held on 6 February at the exclusive Hyatt Hotel in Rosebank. This conference housed role players, commentators and arguably the most insightful individuals involved in the economical and political status of the Republic. It boasted a very opinionated panel made up of Justice Malala, Eusibious McKaiser, Daniel Silke and the keynote address given by Professor Habib, Vice Chancellor of Witwatersrand University. Another spectacularly executed event was the Africa Forum Clients Cocktail, with African theme touches of décor, managed by Lindi. The ambiance was well set for clients to mingle and network with a live band playing in the background. Lindi customized a meter-by-meter map of Africa, made up of beads – this was a nice African touch to the stunningly put together décor and lounge setting.

Kindest Regards,

Thabo Matlhako Director - Aleit Events
