ast month’s disappointing draw against Albion Rovers brings back horrible memories of the Cowenbeath clash last season in which conceding late goals ultimately cost us our Division One status. Hopefully the two last gasp goals from Rovers won’t cost us in some way come the end of May. However, despite the disappointing, I feel special credit must go to Sam Filler who I feel put in a ‘Man of the Match’ performance, and prevented Rovers getting back into the match a lot sooner on numerous occasions. It’s been great to see so many faces back in the stands at the DDS following the disappointment of last season, and it’s clear to see Jocky has the team well drilled for what will be a tough season. Hopefully we’ll be able to repeat the heroics of the 09/10 season and gain promotion, but what’s more important is to ensure we’re still in the Second Division at the end of the season. As Livingston had demonstrated, once you’ve fallen once, it’s hard to stop falling down the slippery slide of Scottish football. While it’s nice to know there may be more reasons to smile come 4:45pm this season, it’s also foolish not to want to be competing with the best in Division One and everyone involved with the club wants a swift return there in a sustainable fashion. Finally, last month’s issue of the Albion was again a sell-out. Thank you to all those who went out and bought it. Next month we’ll hopefully be releasing information on how to subscribe to the magazine to ensure you never miss an issue. Seven points and fourth place after four games – I’ll take that. Right that’s the football side of things covered! The news on the Executive Board re-building is very positive. I’m delighted to be able to announce that two new members have been approved by the Trust Board. They are both Binos fans of long standing and have already set about tackling their individual responsibilities with energy and enthusiasm. The first “new” face is Dougie Macgowan. Dougie brings over 25 years experience in Sales and Marketing to the table and will head up all aspects of our commercial activity. It is stating the obvious (and is no exaggeration) that the income we derive from this source will “make or break” us, given the harsh reality that what comes in through the turnstiles falls a long way short of meeting our outgoings. Dougie is well aware of how crucial his role is and he’s already made a start from an organisational perspective as well as bringing in some much needed income. Alan Christie is the second addition and he has the task of managing the F-word – Finance. It is no secret that Scottish Football is facing incredibly tough times; the recession bites us in every way possible and every stone that we turn seems to turn up another “challenge”. Alan is more than up to meeting these challenges and like Dougie has already made inroads into getting to grips with his responsibilities. In addition to the formal additions to the Executive Board, David Ogilvie, who many of you will know from his match reports in the Stirling Observer, has agreed to assist us in an advisory capacity with all aspects of communications. David’s professional influence can already be seen to good effect on the Official Website which has improved beyond all recognition over the past few weeks. Indeed the two David’s (the other being our Kit Man) between them have dramatically improved not just the appearance but the content as well. Media coverage (of the positive variety) is hugely important to us and this is in safe hands with David O. In order for the Executive Board to be successful it essential that sub-groups are put in place, particularly under the Finance and Commercial banners. I am aware that we have a list of volunteers, ready and willing to assist and we’ll be seeking to engage, in the not too distant future, with those people who can add value. I would ask that anyone that has not already put their name forward, who considers they fit the bill, to contact the Club at the earliest opportunity. It is early days and I’m not going to make any bold statements about the future. I will, however, promise fans that their Executive Board will be doing everything in their power to ensure the future of the Club is both secure and progressive. Key to setting a firm foundation for this to be achieved is our partnership with Stirling Council and Active Stirling and I hope to be in a position to bring you an update on progress with this in next month’s edition. I’ll know we’re heading in the right direction when the F-word isn’t the first thing that springs to mind when the full time whistle heralds a victory and the win bonus comes into play!

Albion News INJURY UPDATES At the time of writing, Shaun Fagan (hamstring) and Daly McSorley (ankle) were both recovering well from their injuries. Both are hoping to be fit in time for the Stenhousemuir game. More serious, however, is Callum Reidford’s situation. Callum is booked in for surgery on the 8th September to repair cartilage damage to his knee. The expected rehabilitation period is six weeks, and Jocky is urgently addressing his options in relation to goalkeeping cover. Expect to see a new face on the bench for the Stenhousemuir game.
WORKING WITH THE SFA In partnership with Active Stirling, the Club has reached agreement with the SFA to host coaching courses at the Doubleetree Dunblane Stadium. The first of these, a UEFA B License course, took place the week commencing the 29thAugust, and two more are booked in for the coming months. We are hopeful that this arrangement will open the door to further opportunities to work with our national footballing body.
STEVIE NICHOLAS Stevie Nicholas has joined SAFC for the third time after impressing Jocky and John in training over the last few months. Many Binos will remember Stevie’s goal against Hibernian at Easter Road in 1999, which secured a famous Scottish Cup replay at home for the Albion – where we triumphed over the then 1st Division leaders who were on an outstanding run of form. Welcome back Stevie!

ALBION TO UPGRADE ACCESS FOR DISABLED Stirling Albion FC and former chairman Peter McKenzie are delighted to welcome our wheelchair users as guests to the game against Stenhousemuir. As well as enjoying hospitality and meeting Jocky and the players, they will get a chance to voice their opinions on the current facilities at the Stadium. The Club has already drawn up a draft strategy on ways in which to integrate more disabled fans. This will be done in conjunction with a number of organisations including Active Stirling who are also working hard to make the entire Sports Village more accessible to those with special needs. Stirling Albion is delighted that some of the Active Stirling Board have joined us at the match. Peter is going to take the opportunity to announce the recipients of the proceeds from his recent testimonial game. It is widely anticipated that Peter will donate a significant amount of the money to improve - in the longer term – facilities for home and away disabled supporters. In the shorter term, Peter has asked the club to permit access to the McKenzie Suite during inclement weather if the individuals so wish. In the past, the original Young Reds Committee was awarded a lottery grant to improve opportunities and amenities for disabled young people. Some of the original committee members are back to enjoy proceedings and hopefully be encouraged to get involved in the club again. It is going to be a fantastic day. To Lara, Jean, Margaret, Fraser, Scott, Andrew, Eric, John, Gordon and their carers/friends a very warm welcome. (Apologies if we have missed anyone).

ello and welcome back to Doubletree Dunblane Stadium after the short break away from club football due to the international fixtures at the start of the month. I think we’ve had a good August and if I’m to be honest, I’m slightly surprised by the start we have made in the league. I would say it’s been better than anyone of us could of expected. I’m pleased with the way the young players have started and I’m pleased with the way they’re going about their business and we should be reasonably happy with the start we’ve hard. So far, it looks like this is a league in which everyone will be taking points off everyone, so in that respect, it will be a challenging year. There’s not much between the teams at the moment. To be honest, the games we have lost this season, certainly the Arbroath and Airdrie game, have been decided by refereeing decisions. We’ve lost these games but we haven’t lost them because we’ve been the poor side, far from it. As I say, I’m pleased with how the players have started but there’s been one player who has stood out in particular and played a big part in the position we are in, and that’s Brian Allison. The improvement in Brian since John Blackley and myself took over last season has been night and day and he’s started off this year where he left off. He didn’t play against Arbroath and I think we definitely missed him. Stevie Nicholas has signed with the club after impressing me in training. He has been training with us since pre-season and initially only came in and asked for training facilities and wasn’t par-
ticularly interested in playing. But the more he trained the fitter he got and the better he was looking. We have a lot of youngsters in the squad and not a great deal of experience and when I asked Stevie a couple of weeks ago if he would be interested in coming back and playing, his reaction was one of surprise. However, after he had time to think about my offer he decided to join us and I just hope his experience, even when it comes to being on the training ground, will benefit the others, particularly the younger ones. I won’t rule out the possibility of bringing someone in on loan but even that depends on the wage demands of the parent club, as finance dictates who I can sign, as you all know. I don’t see anyone else coming in on a permanent deal. There are always things to improve on, as every game you play; you look to improve on your faults for the next game. We have a very tough game against Stenhousemuir and we’re going to be without Gary Thom for that game, and that’s a bit of a blow. Brian Allison should be back but it will be a difficult game against Davie Iron’s team. They had a slow start but have picked up in their last few games and had some impressive results. We need to keep working hard and try and improve our individual and team performances and I believe that a result against Stenhouesmuir will set the tone for our game against Forfar. We now know a bit more about our squad than we did a month ago and I am confident that we can continue our good start this month against tough opposition.

he Binos got their season off to a flying start with a hard fought win on the opening day against East Fife, who will be many people’s title favourites this season. John Robertson’s side traveled to the Dunblane Doubletree Stadium in confident mood and immediately his side started to get the ball down and move it around the new look Albion team. East Fife’s Rob Ogelby looked dangerous early on and the Hearts loanee linked up well with Bobby Linn in the first half. Albion themselves looked dangerous themselves and Alan Cook looked the most likely to make the breakthrough for the home side with a teasing run and shot which was smartly saved by Mark Ridgers in the East Fife goal. Albion almost ended the half with a disaster when captain Brian Allison got himself in a muddle and gifted possession
to East Fife’s Ryan Wallace. Wallace was then denied by the impressive Sam Filler in the Albion goal.. Both teams started the second half well with Albion fullback Devon Jacobs coming close but his shot unfortunately nestled the wrong side of the net. Stirling Albion proved to be the more ruthless when they took the lead through Scott Davidson in the 75th minute. After a good cross by man of the match, Cook, it was Gary Thom who nodded a clever header into the path of Davidson who finished with aplomb. Albion looked nervous in the closing stages but that was expected of a side that hadn’t exactly made winning a habit last season. The Binos held on for an important victory to get their season off to an excellent start against a very capable East Fife side that may well be challenging for promotion come the end of the season.

tirling crashed out of their second cup competition in the space of a few weeks as their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals of the Ramsden Cup were ended by Livingston at the Braidwood Motor Company Stadium. Despite starting the game well, The Binos lacked quality in the final third, thus allowing Livi the opportunity to capitalise on the counter attack. It was a Kenny Deuchar hat trick that inspired the Scottish First Division club to a Ramsdens Cup victory over the visitors. Deucher opened the scoring and later closed it as he inspired Livingston to a comprehensive victory over an inexperienced Stirling outfit. He started proceedings with a strike on 22 minutes after Rory Boulding provided the assist, firing past Sam Filler in the Stirling goal. Jocky Scott selected a relatively inexperienced team that consisted of players that didn’t feature in the 1-0 victory
over East Fife prior this match. Shaun Dillon received the captain’s armband for the tie. Deuchar, a qualified doctor, didn’t waste time in adding to his tally as he netted another just after the half-hour mark. Not long after followed a Devon Jacobs own goal that meant the Binos went in at half time 3-0 down. The second half proved quite uneventful for the most part with the Binos struggling to keep possession and after a series of substitutions from both sides, a second own goal was bundled into the net courtesy of Gary Thom. There wasn’t much the defender could do as a powerful Livi cross came in and Thom could only look disparagingly down at the pitch as the ball trundled over the line to give Livi their fourth. In the 90th minute Deuchar still had time to complete his treble by nodding home a cross from substitute Ross Gray. Stirling came into the game knowing it would be a tough encounter playing a team above them and all focus will now be on the league.

the first away game of the league season ended up being a comfortable affair for the Binos as they faced Dumbarton at the Strathclyde Homes Stadium netting five times in the process. the game’s breakthrough came in the 3rd minute when Brian Allison switched the ball from left to right. He then ran into the box and shot straight at the keeper James Ewings who spilt the ball into the path of Darren Smith, leaving him with a simple tap in. Albion continued to press but in the ninth minute Allison gave a cheap free kick from 35 yards out and the Dumbarton midfielder, Scott Agnew stepped up to hit a sweet right foot shot into the top corner. For the majority of the half Albion were under pressure but Sean Dillon commanded at the back and the away side held The Sons pressure. The Binos came straight out of the blocks and scored two goals in three minutes after the break. The first came from a
Smith assist as he found Cook in space on the outside of the box after a Dumbarton error, Cook then smashed a left shot past his former club. The third goal in the 48th came from the left again, Josh flood tapped in a cut back from Crawley who had plenty of time to pick out the youngster on the six yard box. Stirling continued to press and as they did they increased their advantage with captain Sean Dillion tapping home from a Crawley free kick in the 55th minute. The Dumbarton defence were looking lost as no one paid attention to Dillon unmarked in the box. Flood in the middle helped set up Crawley on the left who had acres of space to take a touch and set himself for the fifth. He drilled the ball past Ewing in the 69th minute and this completed the Albion rampage.

fter thumping Dumbarton 5-1 the week before, Jocky Scott can say his team were a bit complacent after losing a two-goal lead to Albion Rovers at the Dunblane Doubletree Stadium. Binos fans came out in their numbers and were looking forward to watching the reds play after some very promising results in the league. It turned out to be a tough encounter for the home side and were perhaps lucky to have taken a point in the end. The visitors, who will be looking to challenge for promotion this season, got their first chance of the game when full back Alan Reid bombed down the wing and put in a good cross but there wasn’t a Rovers striker to put it away. As the game progressed Stirling began to creep back into the contest and had their chance when Scott Davidson slipped a ball to Darren Smith, but the resulting shot
squirmed into the keeper’s hands. The Rovers full backs were making an impact in the game and this time it was left back Barry Russell’s turn when he broke down the left and unleashed a shot which was easily saved by Filler. Stirling worked the ball well in the first half and created some good opportunities but couldn’t capitalise on their efforts. Josh Flood saw one of his efforts wasted as he headed over from close range. Marc McCulloch was solid in the middle of the park and his cross-field pass almost found Jacobs in space but the full-back couldn’t get on the end of the pass. Rovers were looking good on the attack and hit the home side quickly but captain Brian Allison was at hand to break up attacks. The breakthrough came in the 34th minute when Allison played a ball towards John Crawley in the Rovers box, which was cleared, but only as far to Devon Jacobs who drilled the ball home from 20 yards on the angle. Darren Smith is beaten to the ball despite his best efforts Binos couldn’t wait for half-time, as it was wave after wave of Albion Rovers possession. Rovers striker, Andy Scott found himself one-on-one with Filler in the Albion goal but Filler was equal to it as he got a strong right hand to the ball. From the resulting corner, the ball hit the crossbar as it was saved, yet again by Filler, and then Scott bundled it in the net. Luckily for the Binos the goal was ruled offside and the home side managed to go in at half time one goal to the good. The first chance of the second half fell to Rovers when they won an early corner. The ball was delivered and what followed was an old fashioned scramble in the box before Tony Stevenson shot over from close range. Albion Rovers continued to press but it was Stirling who had the chance to extend their lead. Davidson broke away down the middle and as he charged into the box was brought down by an Albion Rovers defender. Davidson

dusted himself down to fire the Binos into a 2-0 lead. Even being two goals down Albion Rovers continued to dominate the half and they also brought on former Bino, Chris Hamilton. The away side were finally awarded for their efforts as full back Russell crossed a ball into the box and Scott Chaplin met it with the slightest of touches. The header fooled Filler and Rovers had a lifeline in the game. Stirling’s defence was beginning to tire and it was showing as they tried to freshen the line up by introducing Lewis Bonar upfront in place of goal scorer Scott Davidson. Unfortunately the Stirling defence couldn’t hold out and when a cross was cleared it ran outside the box and into the path of Rovers left back Russell. Russell struck a sweet shot that swerved by Filler into the corner of the net from 25 yards. Despite losing a two-goal lead, Stirling Albion can be happy with their start to season with two wins and a draw.

Albion’s unbeaten start to the league season came to an end at Gayfield as free-scoring Arbroath claimed their third home win on the trot to go top of the table on goal difference. Paul Sheerin’s side took full advantage of the dismissal of Binos defender Gary Thom early in the second half to make it 13 goals in three matches at Gayfield this term as Stirling went down at a venue where they won 4-3 and 4-2 en route to promotion in 2009/10.
Albion were missing captain Brian Allison, midfielders Daly McSorley and Shaun Fagan and winger Josh Flood so Shaun Dillon was skipper for the day and Gavin Macpherson made his first league start alongside ex-Falkirk teenager Lewis Bonar in the centre of midfield. Steven Nicholas was among the subs after signing a short-term deal at the Doubletree Dunblane Stadium on the eve of the game. Arbroath started strongly and Steven Doris hit the post before his cross was turned into his own net by Macpherson to give the Red Lichties the lead after just nine min-

Four minutes after the interval, Dillon powered home a header from a Cook corner but within 60 seconds the afternoon began to fall apart for the visitors. Josh Falkingham went down under a challenge from Thom, which referee Kevin Clancy deemed had denied the former St Johnstone midfielder a clear goalscoring opportunity, with Albion appealing in vain that the ball had already carried through to goalkeeper Sam Filler. Doris converted the spot-kick and it didn’t take long for Arbroath to go in front - player/boss Sheerin combining with Doris to tuck the ball into the corner at the end of a fine move. When Macpherson was caught on the ball midway through the second half, former Dundee playmaker Gavin Swankie ran clear and lifted his shot over Filler to end any hopes of a 10-man comeback.

I didn’t think it was a penalty, never mind a red card, and the rule that you lose the player as well is very harsh. We did a lot of good things in the attacking part of the game and when we had 11 players on the pitch we did pretty well.” Arbroath player/manager Paul Sheerin said: “We are always liable to score goals but we do leave ourselves open at the back. We are certainly value for money and I thought that for the first half hour of each half we were very good going forward.” A combination of a home double header and two international weekends mean Albion have only one away fixture – at Airdrie on September 24 – until the middle of October.

Young Reds From Doubletree to Ochilview, Recreation Park to Raploch, the sight of Stirling Albion kits has been dazzling. But it’s not just the smart appearance of the kids in the newly-launched Stirling Albion Junior Academy which has caught the eye at playing venues across the district. For the quality, attitude and endeavor of the youngsters involved in the age groups from Under 8’s through to Under 14 level has shone like a beacon in the opening weeks of the new season. Kitted out in their new Puma replica kits, identical to the outfits worn by Jocky Scott’s first-team stars, around 100 youngsters have signed up for the new campaign. The initial aims of the academy were set out at a parent’s meeting in June, with the key to the whole set-up being a football philosophy based on player development. Around 50 youngsters from existing Albion teams at the younger age groups bought into the new plan – and the overwhelming response of the majority of newcomers following a second parent’s meeting in July was extremely positive.
So much so that just two weeks into the new season every place across six age groups was filled up! A total of 12 teams have been enrolled with the Forth Valley Development League and the season kicked off on August 13 with teams from Under 8s to Under 12s getting into their stride. The five teams at Under 8’s and Under 9’s, playing ‘fun fours’, have lapped up their first taste of ‘league football’ at Doubletree Stadium. The main objective for the youngest Binos is touches on the ball, developing their technique and playing with a smile on their faces. This will continue to be the focus for the most junior members of the junior academy. No scores are recorded at any age-group between Under 8’s and Under 12’s. The emphasis is on learning good habits, learning how to play football with a view that once these traits become second nature so too will a winning habit. The age groups at Under 10’s, under 11’s and under 12’s all play seven-a-side football, with once again the emphasis on “pass and move” rather than punt and scuffle!
Two groups of lads at Under 10 level have been based primarily at the Raploch Astroturf pitch, a new Saturday morning venue for this seasona under the guidance of former Hibs and Albion player Graeme Donald. At Under-11 age group, Owen and Shaun Conlon have been overseeing the development of two teams with matches played at Stenhousemuir and Alloa. Over at Under 12 level the heads of coaching, Kevin Hamill and former Spurs and Ajax winger Ally Dick, have continued to impart their knowledge to another two groups of eager and talented youngsters. Both coaches are starting to put in place the standardized coaching philosophy at other age levels in the Stirling Albion Youth Acedemy. Andy Japp’s Under14 side have also kicked off the new season, his being the only age group playing 11-a-side football with home matches played on the grass field at Stirling High. And with a possible Scottish Cup “derby” clash against Riverside in September it’s shaping up to be an exciting few weeks ahead for the 14s squad! Kevin Hamill admitted the first few weeks of the season had been hectic but an exciting time for all the volunteers who have given up an incredible amount of their spare time to set up the academy from scratch. Japp said, “It was a great sight to see so many kids wearing their Albion kits with pride in the first few weeks of the
season. A lot of hard work has gone in behind the scenes to get to the point where we have over 100 youngsters involved and eager to learn how to improve as players and importantly have fun.” Nine of the 12 teams train two nights a week on the Astroturf facilities at Forthbank, Wallace High, Raploch and Stirling High with the Under 8s involved at Forthbank one night a week. Every ‘Junior Player’ has received a card which allows them to attend every home league match at Stirling Albion. Around 40 kids took up the offer for the recent match against Albion Rovers, many attending a first-team game for the first time and converting their mums and dads into Albion fans in the process! All academy kids are being encouraged to attend a strength and conditioning course run by Ryan Conlon at Raploch on Wednesday nights. The idea behind these classes is to improve agility, flexibility and core strength, an important aspect of fitness for any budding footballer. Under 14s coach Japp added, “It’s been a fairly busy few weeks to try and pull all this together. “There are a lot of talented kids in the Stirling area who love their football and its great to give them the chance to develop at the academy.”

In a wide open Irn-Bru Second Division, Stenhousemuir will feel they have as good a chance as anyone of winning promotion this season. Having kept the club up at the end of last term, and backed by an ambitious board of directors, manager Davie Irons has put together an experienced and talented squad that includes former Albion pair Martyn Corrigan and Paul McHale. Andy Rodgers and Stewart Kean are proven goalscorers and tricky winger Stevie Murray is a handful for any defence. Stenhousemuir famously beat Dundee United to win the Challenge Cup under Terry Christie in 1995/96 (they knocked us out in the semi-finals en route to their first ever piece of silverware) and the Division Two trophy is the prize they crave this time round.

Davie Irons took over as Stenhousemuir boss in December 2010, ironically just after turning out against the Warriors as player/manager of Threave Rovers in a Scottish Cup tie at the age of 49! Irons has also been in charge at Annan, Gretna and Morton and succeeded John Coughlin (now at the helm of tenants East Stirling) as Stenny manager, keeping them up on the final day of the season as Alloa were plunged into the relegation play-offs instead. A cultured defender/midfielder during his playing days, his CV includes spells at Queen of the South, Ayr United, Clydebank, Dunfermline, Partick Thistle, St Johnstone, Annan and Gretna.
Last league meeting
We have met our near neighbours on surprisingly few occasions in recent times, although they did knock us out of the Stirlingshire Cup with a 4-0 victory in a tie between our U19 teams last month. Indeed, this is only the second season since 2000/01 that we have been in the same division. The most recent league encounter was on April 17, 2010 when goals in the closing few minutes from Ross Forsyth and Iain Russell helped us to a 3-1 victory that proved crucial as Albion went on to pip Alloa for the Second Division title on goal difference. We also won 2-1 in the other Ochilview fixture that season but were held to a 0-0 draw at Forthbank on the opening day and were pegged back for a 1-1 draw on a freezing midweek in March despite taking an early lead through a stunning Chris Aitken free-kick. Gary Thom, now a Stirling player, equalised for the Warriors that night.

The Binos also enjoyed a 3-1 home win over Stenhousemuir in the Challenge Cup in 2009/10 but that was far less dramatic an occasion than the previous cup derby, which saw us progress on penalties after an incredible 3-3 draw in the League Cup back in September 2002. Just a few weeks into Allan Moore’s reign, Gareth Munro equalised several minutes into injury time and Steven Nicholas was on target in added time at the end of extra time as John McVeigh’s men were knocked out.
Stenhousemuir’s last victory against Albion was 3-2 at Forthbank on November 4, 2000. Goals from John Millar and Chris Templeman had Ray Stewart’s side seemingly in control but Alan Blaikie pulled one back with 19 minutes to go and Isaac English sealed the Stenny comeback with a late double.

Albion - You started your professional career at Motherwell and made your debut at 16 during the 2004/2005 season, did you feel pressure appearing at such a young age or was it a case of having no fear because you didn’t know what to expect? Darren - Making your professional debut as a teenager is obviously a daunting thought, but at the time it didn’t phase me at all. I assumed I was just in the squad to make up the numbers but when I was named on the bench I started to think, “I might have a chance of playing”. I think a lot of it was down to being young, having no fear and not really knowing what to expect. However, once you get on the pitch you treat it as any other game and try to show what you can do. It was a great honour for me
because it made me Motherwell’s youngest ever player. It’s a moment I will never forget.
Albion - One of your early career highlights was a last minute goal to earn a draw against Celtic in the 2006/2007 season, can you describe how that felt? Darren - Scoring against Celtic was huge for me. Growing up in Scotland, football revolves around the Old Firm so scoring a goal against either of them has a big impact. It may have only been a tap in but it was such a great feeling. I always remember after the game looking at my phone and having so many missed call and messages, I think everyone I knew had got in touch to congratulate me. Albion - Under Mark McGhee Motherwell had a strong team, particularly the 2007/2008 season when you finished 3rd in league, could you tell us a bit about that particular time at the club? Darren - That season was probably the best I have ever had, but at the same time the worst. We started the season so well, and gathered great momentum and a winning mentality. Our confidence was sky high and we went

in to every game knowing we were going to play well. Then we were shocked by the tragic death of our captain Phil O’Donnell. It was a horrible time for everyone associated with the club. I don’t think anyone would have blamed us for not performing as well for the rest of the season but we all sat down and decided we had to finish third for Phil. It was a season that will live with all the players and fans forever. Albion - Injuries seemed to go against you towards the latter part of your career at Fir Park, do you have any regrets about your time there or anything you wish you had done differently? Darren - I don’t have any regrets about my time at Motherwell, I’m just a little disappointed how injuries ended my time there. Obviously injuries are part of football, however it’s something that has really affected my career and me so far. Hopefully I’m over all those problems and can now look forward to restarting my career with Stirling Albion.
Albion - After a short spell at Ross County, you landed with Stirling Albion, what are you’re initial impressions of the club? Darren - My first impressions of the club are good, and I can see great potential. It was a hard decision choosing to play part-time but after the last few seasons I just wanted to play regular football every week! Obviously last season wasn’t great for all involved with the club but this year will hopefully be different. We have a young, inexperienced team but that can work as a positive and I think we will surprise a lot of people this year. Albion - Have you set yourself any goals or targets for this season and beyond? Darren - I haven’t set any goals for the season, but I’m just hoping to start playing well again and scoring a load of goals along the way. Hopefully that will coincide with victories and we can go on and have a great season.

Forfar were denied successive promotions when they lost in the play-offs last season and wily manager Dick Campbell will again be targeting a top-four finish for the Station Park outfit. He has assembled an experienced squad that includes former Albion hitman Chris Templeman and ex-Inverness CT defender Mark McCulloch, not to be confused with Stirling midfielder Marc! Stevie Crawford was a shrewd acquisition from Cowdenbeath during the summer while Ross Campbell was leading league scorer last season with 11 goals. The Loons made a slow start to the 2011/12 campaign, picking up one point out of nine, but expect them to climb the table soon.

Dick Campbell was appointed manager of Forfar in May 2008, replacing former Albion No 2 Jim Moffat after the Loons had finished at the bottom of Division Three. Consolidation was achieved in his first season which was followed by a memorable promotion via the play-offs, with Arbroath beaten in the final. Forfar again made the play-offs last season but lost out to Ayr United. The 57-year-old Campbell has vast experience after spells in charge of Cowdenbeath, Dunfermline, Partick Thistle and Brechin City. Dick, who played for Cowdenbeath Dunfermline, Brechin and East Stirling, is assisted by twin brother Ian while his sons Iain and Ross are in the Forfar squad.
Last league meeting
The most recent meeting between the clubs came at the start of last season when Forfar won 2-1 at the Doubletree Dunblane Stadium in the first round of the League Cup. Ross and Iain Campbell scored for the visitors before Nathan Taggart pulled one back but we were well beaten on the day. You have to go back to 2006/07 for the last time both Albion and Forfar were in the same division - we enjoyed four wins out of four en route to promotion via the play-offs as the Angus club were relegated. Allan Moore’s men twice won 2-0 at Station Park and recorded 3-0 and 4-0 victories at home. David O’Brien scored a hat-trick in the 4-0 win after Steven Bell had broken the deadlock in just 14 seconds. Stirling have put together a seven-match winning run in league games against Forfar, who last beat us in Division Two in October 2005 when they stormed to a 3-0 triumph at Station Park. One of the many highlights of the record-breaking 27-match unbeaten run under Kevin Drinkell en route to Division Two glory in 1995/96 was a 6-0 stroll at Station Park – we won 4-1 on our second visit that year - while John Phillben’s first match as Albion manager saw us beat Forfar 1-0 thanks to a Gavin Price goal in the League Cup to set up a second-round clash at Dundee United.

Forfar’s last league victory in Stirling was back in September 1991 on the Annfield plastic in a First Division match. We were struggling at the time following promotion under John Brogan and went down 3-1 on a day when keeper Mark McGeown was sent off we but enjoyed a great run over
the winter and comfortably avoided relegation.

mericans are renowned for their sporting clichés. Whether it’s the soaking of the winning Super Bowl coach or the emotional dressing room speech, which has become the staple of many Hollywood epics, the American’s use clichés to enhance a story better than anyone else. But none epitomises the spirit of a nation as suitably as the sportsman who’s lived the ‘American Dream’. Stirling Albion’s marauding full back John Crawley may not have played in front of a television audience of millions or made the cover of Sports Illustrated, but spend some time with the twenty-seven year old and it’s clear he conforms to this famed cliché. Signed through the club’s ‘So You Think You’re Good Enough’ trial scheme, Crawley spent four years in America’s college soccer system, living and playing in two of the most exciting and vibrant cities on earth; New York and Las Vegas. Speaking to The Albion he says, “It certainly was glamorous living in places like Manhattan and Las Vegas and I found myself wondering when the bubble was going to burst. It was slightly strange a boy from Tollcross stand-
ing in Times Square, and next in Las Vegas Boulevard. “I started my scholarship at Long Island University and my campus was in Brooklyn, New York, so I would look out of my room window onto the Empire State Building and the famous Manhattan skyline. It was slightly surreal at times because we had to do things like run across the Brooklyn Bridge for pre-season training.” With players such as David Beckham, Thierry Henry and Robbie Keane all moving to the US in the twilight of their careers, it’s easy to discredit the quality of American soccer. However, Crawley believes that the quality of soccer in the States would surprise its critics. “The main difference (between Scottish and American soccer) is definitely the weather. I was playing in the middle of the desert in Vegas and was waking up to start training before the sun had even come up. “It is a bit physical here, but the standard over there is pretty high and there were players in the league I played in who had played in World Cups and played for the US national team. The standard is a lot higher than people give it credit for.” The full back spent two years in New York studying an art degree before transferring to the University of Ne-
vada, Las Vegas where he also spent two years playing. But, whilst most of his teammates would return home for the summer months, Crawley stayed. Clearly the US was all he’d dreamed of. “The first year I was over there I came back home to Scotland because I thought I was missing things. I wasn’t. So the next few years I just stayed in America and I actually didn’t come back to Scotland for four years, I was enjoying it that much. “During the summer there is a league called the Professional Development League (PDL) which runs and I would apply to play for different teams in different parts of the country each year. “One year I played in West Palm Beach, Florida and another in St. Louis, Missouri. I wanted to try different places and see as much of the country as I could. “One year I even played in El Paso, Texas, which is on the border of Mexico and the full team spoke Spanish, including the coach who did his team talks in Spanish. It was certainly a little different to Jocky’s team talks here.” Crawley, who is now a sports consultant for the very organisation that gave him his chance in America after being released by Motherwell as a youngster, First Point
USA, expressed a desire to return to the US at some point, but for the moment, he’s got more important things on his mind. “I would love to go back to America at some point but I don’t see it happening soon as I have just found out I’m going to become a Dad, and of course I’ve only just joined Albion. “I had a great time in the States and I made the most of it, but now I want to settle down and I’m trying to find a house and I’m quite willing to move on to the next stage of my life now. But I will always keep playing football, no matter what level.” Of course, Crawley is not the only person at Albion to boast US credentials, with boss, Jocky Scott having played with the Seattle Sounders at the height of the Stateside soccer boom in the 1980’s. “I actually haven’t spoken to Jocky much about America but I’m sure as the season goes on we’ll speak about it at some point and he’ll tell me about the time he scored against Pele. “If I’d scored against Pele I’d boast about it. I’m still boasting about my goal at Dumbarton.

What’s the ground like?
The Excelsior Stadium is big, too big sadly. 10,000 seats – which was the previous requirement for clubs wanting to be in the SPL, although that figure has now dropped to 6,000. Three of the stands will be shut. Now has an artificial surface. Adult admission £15.
Easy to get to?
Very. Half an hour will do it from Stirling and the stadium sits on a main road in the town. Parking is available at the ground, although it will cost you.
How did we do the last time?
Did you have to ask that! (see picture below) Nothing happened for half of an hour but we ended up on the wrong end of a 5-0 thrashing as Shaun Fagan and Sam Filler saw red. Much better to recall our only other visit to this corner of Lanarkshire – that unforgettable May day in 2007 when 1,300 Albion fans saw Allan Moore’s men claim a 3-2 win for a 5-4 aggregate success as we returned to the First Division after a long absence. One of the best ever days in the club’s modern history.
Where’s our next road trip?
It’s a Fife double header next month. The Binos go to Cowdenbeath on October 15 and then head to New Bayview to take on East Fife a week later. We return to Airdrie on January 28.
Who’s their boss?
Jimmy Boyle. A former Airdrieonians player, he is assisted by Alan Lawrence and Paul Jack, who had a brief stint at Forthbank a decade ago.
How have they fared so far?
Bit of a mixed bag. Easy opening-day win over Dumbarton was followed by a 2-0 defeat at East Fife and a 5-1 thumping by Cowdenbeath. Airdrie lost 5-0 at home to Livingston in the first round of the Ramsdens Cup (we can sympathise with that!) and have saved their best for the Scottish Communities League Cup. After thrashing us 5-0, the Diamonds claimed an impressive 2-0 victory over First Division Raith Rovers to reach the last 16.
Who should we look out for? A bit like ourselves, Airdrie have quite a young squad but are not without experience – notably former Aberdeen and Queen of the South defender David Lilley. Midfielder Graeme Owens, previously with Middlesbrough and Kilmarnock, is hard to pin down and forward Ryan Donnelly also caused us grief last time round.

Binos’ Ball Boy Matthew Hollingworth gives The Albion his view on recent events at the club Well here we are back into the swing of the football season, and it’s beginning to feel as if we were never away. How do you like the format of the new magazine? I have been selling them at the away end for both the East Fife and Albion Rovers and the sales have been quite encouraging. Obviously some away fans are reluctant to pay £3.50 for a magazine and there have been some comments about it not really being a match-day programme, but the people who have purchased it has been very impressed. Although still at school in my sixth year, I have a part-time job as a trainee chef which prevented me from travelling to the Dumbarton game, just my
luck that the Binos played like Brazil and scored five goals, seems like too long since that last happened. Anyway, two games down Stirling had six points and top of the table - dizzy heights indeed. Anyway away from the Binos for a minute and a word about my recent visit to the Carlisle United club shop. My family usually have a short break in England prior to school re-starting. Usually my father and I organise the trip around a football match but this year my mother organised it and managed to keep us miles away from anyway matches sounds deliberate to me. We did however get to the shop where there was a sale and I got a very smart away top
from last season for a fiver! And a scarf for a quid, so I was well chuffed. Unfortunately at the tail-end of August Stirling’s unbeaten start to the season was ended by Arbroath. I travelled to the game on the supporters’ bus and this meant a three and a half hour sit in the pub, in which I was taught many a life lesson from ‘tipsy’ fans. Many things happened such as a beach ball being deflated because having air in it made it an offensive weapon, but I’m not complaining because it just made the day more fun. The game unfortunately ended 4-2 to Arbroath, but a great day was had by the fans.
