the COLOR of light · F a l l 2 0 0 5

An exploration of the reflective and refractive characteristics of light… The light is transformed from a series of blurred marks on a page to a derived pattern of lines, to a physical model of bent metal and overlapping colors, to an abstract “woven” structure wrapped in tinted cladding, to finally an observatory awash with color.

1.1

The small venue provides a space in which a visitor may be overcome by the complex variations of color and pattern, perceptible only thanks to the inherent nature of light.

The mission of this project was to unite the cultures and educational experiences of Costa Rica and the United States by way of a multi-disciplinary education and research facility located in the Casa Verde rainforest of Costa Rica. The remote campus provides segregated housing for students and faculty members, as well as shared social spaces, design studios, and natural science laboratories. Emphasis was put on this being a well-integrated and low-impact facility, aiming to preserve many natural features of the environment and make use of such resources as prevailing wind patterns.

Existing Malaquite Visitor Center

Working collaboratively, the entire studio was divided into small groups and each group was assigned a specific focus of the project. The group I worked with was challenged to design an extension and renovation of the existing auditorium at the North Padre Malaquite Visitor Center while keeping in mind specific environmental and ecological considerations. Our design process began with conceptual sketches and collective studio input, and we ended the semester with life-like visualizations and a scale model. A big emphasis of the project was including a prominent feature that would showcase the use of such modern technology as a laser cutter and a CNC router. The final design proposal was presented to the staff of the visitor center as well as individuals from the U.S. National Park Service.

Temple of Triptolemos 路 F a l l 2 0 0 6

During my study of the Art & Architecture of Greece, I was asked to recreate, through the use of modern technology, a notable feature of the Ancient Greece landscape. The Temple of Triptolemos -- a place of worship dedicated to the demi-god of the Eleusinion mysteries -- was part of the Eleusinion sanctuary located just outside of the Athenian Agora.

1.4

With only images of the plan and two elevations to work from, I replicated the Temple and the surrounding topography in AutoCAD and transformed the line drawings into a 3-dimensional model using SketchUp. The resulting model is an estimation of what the Temple would have looked like during The Roman Period.

Architecture of Global Branding 路 S p r i n g 2 0 0 7

The materialization of an abstract notion into an architectural expression... There is an association made between every internationally recognized brand name and the products which are represented by that brand. Designers are presented the challenge of upholding that image, that reputation by means of the products they conceive. So too should architects be held to the same standard when charged to design the places in which these products will be imagined, demonstrated, and distributed.

1.5

Such is the case with this headquarters for the Sportlifestyle brand PUMA. The ideas most associated with this brand name -- innovative, elite, unique -- are embodied in the aesthetics and execution of this design.

Up in the Attic 路 S p r i n g 2 0 0 3

The Washington/Alexandria Architecture Consortium -- a satellite campus of Virginia Tech -- is housed in a renovated school building. Because of a growing student population, it was necessary to increase the amount of habitable work space. The attic was retrofitted to accommodate the addition of 32 student work stations, and emphasis was given to the complex addition of vertical circulation. A light-study model was utilized to test the incorporation of natural day-lighting features.

2.1

The unique transformation of this space provides the means by which greater efficiency and productivity are achieved up in the attic.

5 There are numerous faculty members and guest lecturers that visit Texas A & M University on a regular basis from other cities, states, and even other countries. Some of these visitors stay for just a day or two, and some are relocated to College Station for a full semester or more. Unfortunately, there is not adequate lodging on campus to accommodate these professors and guests.

2.2

The goal of this project was to design an all-encompassing complex that would provide these individuals with a place to stay, a facility in which to host lectures or conferences, and a convenient dining location. The central-campus site placement was a key factor in the planning of this complex, making it necessary to design for maximum visibility and accessibility, while also keeping in mind the privacy needs of the short-term and long-term residents.

graphite · two-point perspective

My hand-drawing experiences have exploited various media, such as charcoal, chalk pastels, colored pencil, graphite, and ink.

I have photography experience with both a manual and a digital SLR. I focus on still-life photography to experiment with and practice basic photographic skills. My primary area of interest, though, is on candid and posed portraiture. I aim to capture the emotion of a moment within an image.
