Lamborghini Revuelto

Among the most audacious of exotic vehicles attainable by mortals is the Lamborghini Revuelto. The new flagship adheres to the brand’s tradition of being named after a famous fighting bull while embracing the double entendre of the Spanish word for “scrambled,” revuelto. The reference tips a hat to the ludicrous combo of three electric motors and a massive V12, which converge to churn over a thousand horsepower. That’s enough oomph to quell the most strident of petrolheads, while enabling an electric-only mode for urban congestion zones where gas engines are banned. From $604,363, lamborghini.com

PRETTY SUS

SUSTAINABILITY GETS SEXY WITH THIS QUINTET OF ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS VEHICLES.

Long before sustainability entered the luxury vernacular, more was more. Ultimate speed and mobility required conspicuous consumption, which in turn produced more waste and pollution. Better living through science eventually triggered a sea change in which hybridized and electrified vehicles actually outperformed their conventional rivals, enabling a win-win of power and efficiency. Here’s a look at some of the industry’s current knockouts.

Kawasaki Ninja 7

Fuel and electrons also join forces with the Kawasaki Ninja 7, the first mass-produced hybrid motorcycle. Claiming the power of a large gas motor and the flexibility and efficiency of a smaller power plant, the Ninja 7 blends a 450 cc engine and a compact electric motor with an automatic transmis-

Volocopter

Pure electric power is emerging as a force to be reckoned with in the aviation space, where innovators like Volocopter are engineering autonomous aircraft that will soon bring air taxis and flying cars to everyday life. The German brand’s VoloCity model leverages 18 rotors that enable vertical takeoffs and landings, and can cruise at up to 68 mph. Though not yet ready for public consumption, this dronelike creation will be shuttling athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Estimated pricing to start at $325,000, volocopter.com

WiderCat 92

Among the most extravagant expressions of hybridization is the WiderCat 92 by the Italian yacht builder Wider. The 92-foot catamaran boasts all the high-end superyacht features, like a tender garage and a foredeck lounge, with a twist: twin electric motors and two generators that combine with solar panels to produce onboard power. In Zero Emission Mode, the generators can cruise at 6 knots for 27 nautical miles in total silence, with batteries storing excess power for later use. From $8.74 million, wider-yachts.com

BMW XM Label Red

Ultra-high-performance hybrids are not limited to low-slung two-seaters. The BMW XM Label Red is the brand’s most powerful M car in history, flaunting a 738-hp plug-in hybrid drivetrain, cloaked by a rouge mug and a jumble of facets, which makes for a controversial bodywork. Love or hate the XM’s looks, the combination of a V8 and an electric motor enables the Jekyll and Hyde ability to scream at full tilt up to 175 mph or to hum along for up to 30 miles in total electric silence. ALOHA SPIRIT

A new sport-centric catamaran at the Four Seasons Resort Hualālai promises epic charter adventures.

When embarking on an open-sea adventure, there are many advantages to chartering a catamaran. The traditional version of the vessel— popular in the Pacific Ocean and in Caribbean waters—is ideal for a day trip, affording room to stretch out, stability, and speed to outrun bad weather or to get to a secluded cove quickly and smoothly for a private picnic or party.

For the ultimate in catamaran experiences, look to the Big Island of Hawaii, on the beautiful Kona-Kohala coast, where the Four Seasons Resort Hualālai has added a new 46-foot catamaran, Alaka’i Nui (Great Leader), as an exclusive guest experience. For a minimum of two hours, guests can charter Alaka’i Nui—powered by a quadruple 425-hp XTO outboard and helmed by Hualālai’s Alaka’i Nalu (Leaders of the Waves)—for a host of ocean adventures.

Venture miles from the resort on the warm, clear Pacific waters to view abundant marine life, with the resort’s expert staff on board as your guides. The vessel’s 1,700 horsepower will waste no time getting you to deep-sea fishing spots, under-the-radar snorkeling locations, and pristine beaches with limited accessibility.

While aboard, enjoy breakfast or lunch, from burritos and wraps to salads and sandwiches, as well as snacks and drinks. During a sunset cruise, guests can try the ultimate tropical cocktail thanks

to a collaboration with Kuleana Rum, which is made in Kohala with the fresh juice of heirloom Hawaiian kō (sugar).

Back on dry land, make a dinner reservation at the resort’s new steak house, Miller & Lux Hualālai, from celebrated chef Tyler Florence. And do order the oysters, which Hualālai grows sustainably in Lake Pūnāwai, a 3-million-gallon pond on-site.

When you are ready to call it a night, retreat to one of Hawaii’s largest villas. In late 2021, the resort unveiled a $100-million property-wide renovation, complete with a trio of uniquely designed villa accommodations and updates to all guest rooms and suites. fourseasons.com n

LA DOLCE VITA

Italy’s off-the-beaten-path locales are ripe to be discovered, thanks to a boutique luxury hotels leader. By Laura Corrigan O'Connell

While the bustling cities of Rome and Florence have evergreen appeal, regions like Turin and Parma are also having their moment. Here, Bernabò Bocca—president of the family-owned Sina Hotels and son of the brand’s founder, Count Ernesto Bocca—shares his thoughts on where you should go next.

In your family for three generations now, Sina has hotels in iconic destinations, such as Venice, Milan, Capri, Rome, and Florence, as well as lesser-known towns. Guide us through some of the under-the-radar spots, starting with Turin.

Turin is my hometown, where my father led the tannery industry and I grew up as a child. Our family countryside estate is an ancient 18th-century aristocratic villa outside Turin, which we transformed into Sina Villa Matilde. The major city attractions nearby are the Reggia di Venaria, the Mole Antonelliana, the Museo Egizio, and the Chapel of the Holy Shroud.

What excites you about Perugia?

Sina Brufani is the only five-star hotel in the city. Unmissable monuments are all walking distance from it, including the National Gallery of Umbria. Guests must delight in a cocktail made from our award-winning mixologist at our Collins’ Bar, prominently located on the panoramic square. We also offer many bespoke activities outside the ancient city walls, such as truffle hunting with dogs in the woods followed by a cooking class.

Viareggio’s proximity to the Tuscan capital makes it popular with Florentines. What else is special about Viareggio?

The key features of this coastal resort destination are the impressively wide, sandy beaches. The Sina Astor hotel is located in prime front-row position facing the Mediterranean Sea, with views of the Apuan Alps just behind. There are daily boat excursions to Cinque Terre or electric bike tours around the pine forest just beyond the town. In the summer, guests should plan a stay during the famous Puccini Festival or experience a private tour of the Carrara marble quarries made famous around the world by Michelangelo.

How about Parma?

In Parma, guests can experience the heart of the town through a classical tour of the historical city center, across the stunning Piazza Garibaldi, the monumental Piazza Duomo, and the ancient Teatro Regio. Parma is also known as Italy’s Food Valley, where we arrange visits to the Parmigiano cheese factory or the Prosciutto di Parma Consortium.

This discreet property also has a spa for more relaxing on-site, but those who like to explore can venture out, too, by renting a boat to sail along the dramatic coast, or taking a hike to visit Our Lady of Tinos church, a famous pilgrimage site since the 1830s. oderatinos.com

Cap Menorca, Balearic Islands

For those looking for a more relaxing holiday in the Balearics, Cap Menorca, an intimate Relais & Châteaux property on Menorca’s southern tip, may be the ideal escape. The 15 suites are simple but stylish, with hand-carved wooden furniture, rattan pendant lights, and bottle-green tiled bathrooms. In addition, each guest room has a private garden and pool for those who want to lounge under swaying palms and umbrella pines. More adventurous guests can hike or go horseback riding or explore the Mediterranean’s quieter coves aboard one of the property’s small yachts or sailboats. capmenorca.com

From chic retreats to delish restaurants, Long Island’s famed beach towns make it fun to be well. By Heidi Mitchell

Though known for its boldface-name regulars and impossibleto-get reservations, the Hamptons has become so much more. A staple escape for affluent New Yorkers and a draw for discerning beachgoers everywhere, the East End of Long Island also offers up a lifestyle that emphasizes looking good and feeling good, making it the ultimate wellness destination in the tristate area.

Renting a house, or even doing a “share house,” is commonplace in the Hamptons and can often be the best way to go. (Contact The Agency’s Hamptons office if you’d rather take over a residence than walk through a lobby every time you head out on the town.) If a hotel is your jam, a handful of wellness-focused retreats have new additions or renovations. Shou Sugi Ban House, in Water Mill, opened with just 13 studio rooms, but now the five-acre hideaway has added a five-bedroom bed-and-breakfast, plus two plush residences for longer stays. In Bridgehampton, Topping Rose House is set inside a 19th-century Greek Revival mansion, which has a working farm on-site, and has been welcoming a rotating roster of wellness brands and experts. The first full season of the Pridwin Hotel and Cottages, in Shelter Island, began in April 2023, after longtime owners and locals the Petrys opted to refresh the almost eight-acre property on this sleepy island that’s only accessible by ferry. There are now 16 new cottages sprinkled across the Adirondack-camp-style retreat’s grounds. Find inner solace while relaxing on the private beach or meditating on the manicured lawn that overlooks the sailboats tacking to and fro.

The newest of the high-end Japanese omakase-inspired Kissaki restaurants, in Water Mill, presents elegant sushi in an unfussy space that will make you feel good. Seafood with a healthful Mediterranean spin is the focus at Sag Harbor Kitchen, the latest from chef Melissa O’Donnell, winner of five Michelin Bib Gourmand awards for beloved (RIP) New York spots including Thelma on Clinton, Stella, Salt, and Lil’ Gem. Like your Greek with a side of French? Find it at Talya, in the Ruschmeyers Hotel, where chef Geoffrey Lechantoux composes fresh dishes using mostly local ingredients. Having worked with the likes of Alain Ducasse and Gordon Ramsay, Lechantoux elevates the simple to the sublime in dishes like beef tartare dolmades, butterflied branzino with tabbouleh, and orzo and crab with fava beans, oyster mushrooms, and lobster bisque. Never heavy, always memorable, and just steps from the sand.

Fitness guru Tracy Anderson opened her latest studio in a Sag Harbor barn in 2022, and it’s still as hot as ever—literally. The room is set to 95 degrees with 75% humidity, which is said to encourage the body to release toxins and improve tone. After a workout, why not climb onto an eFoil and learn to “surf” in the glassy waters off Sag Harbor with Hamptons Lift Foils, or get an equestrian education at the Hampton Classic. When it's time to unwind, Gurney’s Montauk Resort, favored for its beachfront location and chill vibe, has the Seawater Spa. The recently renovated 30,000-square-foot facility includes an ocean-fed saltwater pool, a caldarium and thermal baths, and indoor-outdoor therapy rooms that look onto the Atlantic.

A style lover’s guide to summer in America’s most fashionable mountain town.
There’s more than winter fun in this dynamic destination. By Samantha Brooks

Aspen winters are known to drop fresh powder that attracts ski bunnies of all levels, but summer in Aspen is remarkable, too, bringing a stunning backdrop for hiking, biking, and, of course, taking in the town’s myriad shops, restaurants, and events. And all of this is more accessible than ever to those traveling in and out of Southern California, thanks to Aero’s new direct flights from Los Angeles.

The Little Nell, a Relais & Châteaux property, has long offered the plushest luxury accommodations in town, with an unbeatable location at the base of Ajax. This year, the hotel is even better with the launch of its new three-treatment-room spa by the Madrid-based designer Luis Bustamante. (Private rooms feature their own steam shower, and some have a hybrid infrared/halotherapy sauna.) Need more space? Rent one of the recently renovated units at the Residences at The Little Nell, located a block from the hotel and featuring accommodations as large

as 4,000 square feet. A few blocks away, The St. Regis Aspen Resort sprawls with 179 rooms, which have also just been freshly renovated in a settingappropriate palette of green, gold, and gray, courtesy of Rottet Studio. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience treatments at The St. Regis’s new RAKxa spa, too (see “Beyond the Massage,” page 29). The boutique hotel Mollie, debuted this past December, boasts warm-modern design from Post Company. Standard rooms are great crash pads for those looking to spend most of their time outdoors, while the junior suite—with 575 square feet of indoor space, an open floor plan, and a private terrace—is ideal for guests seeking a loftlike experience.

For its annual Culinary Fest (July 7–10), The Little Nell is inviting its top guests to experience food and wine from an array of chefs and sommeliers during the exclusive event (tickets for a dinner on July 8 are available to the public for

purchase). For new and trending restaurants in town, head to The Boat Tow for its “après all-day” menu; Sant Ambroeus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; Sway Thai for a lively dining atmosphere; and L.A. hot spot The Nice Guy, which arrives later this year. And don’t forget to rediscover Prospect at the Hotel Jerome; the Michelin-recommended restaurant recently debuted a new tasting menu.

Aspen has always been known for its array of luxury shops—are you even allowed to leave without customizing your own cowboy hat at Kemo Sabe?—but the town is all the more luxurious now thanks to last year’s openings of Hermès, Bottega Veneta, and Tiffany & Co. For the art inclined, a visit to the Bayer Center is essential, and be sure to grab your tickets for the widely acclaimed Aspen Music Festival, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year with more than 300 events during an eight-week season that kicks off June 26.

The Clodagh Effect

The pioneer in wellness-driven design gives a behind-the-scenes look at some of today’s hottest trends. By Andrea Delgado

The Irish-born, New York–based designer Clodagh is renowned for her visionary approach to eco-friendly, life-transforming minimalism. Infusing spaces with the rejuvenating power of ancient traditions and cutting-edge methods, Clodagh has created interiors for many of the world’s iconic brands and resorts, including Six Senses Kaplankaya, Miraval Arizona, The Caledonia, and W Fort Lauderdale, and she has designed more than 200 residences around the globe, from Portugal and Argentina to California and Washington, D.C. Here, she shares her insights on wellness design and the importance of creating healing spaces.

You were one of the first designers to specialize in wellness spaces. What was it like when you were starting out, and how have things evolved?

I began my career as a couture fashion designer in Dublin and became known for my use of eco-friendly, natural fibers and fabrics. I eventually moved to Spain, where I began creating retail, hospitality, and residential spaces,

partnering with an environmental architect who introduced me to eco-design concepts such as the use of native plants, solar-powered lighting, nontoxic paints, and more. Years later, when I opened my design business in New York City, many of these wellness practices were considered woo. Now, some call me a guru.

What are some of the most exciting wellness innovations you’ve incorporated into your projects lately?

Hydrotherapy works wonders in addressing circulation issues and various ailments by harnessing the soothing power of water. By tapping into the natural detoxifying effects of warm and cold water, hydrotherapy becomes a game-changer for pain relief and improved blood circulation. In my designs, I seamlessly blend the healing essence of nature using therapeutic botanical formulas and the presence of biophilic indoor and outdoor plants. Studies indicate that humans instinctively seek connections with nature, and incorporating these elements into my designs has proven to have

an overall positive impact, reducing stress and lowering blood pressure.

Your earlier projects—what still makes them most relevant today?

Several of our residential projects, including a private residence in Manhattan we designed for a Broadway producer, are exactly the way we designed them decades ago. Clients often mention how our use of hidden storage spaces, for instance, is appreciated almost as much as our total concept of luxury and comfort.

What are you currently working on?

The renovation of a 1903 waterfront cottage in Hyannis Port, on Cape Cod, is one of our favorites. While paying homage to its original structure, we seamlessly integrated contemporary updates. Elevating the house 15 feet into the air, shifting it east by 5 feet, and placing it on a new foundation brought a refreshing transformation. This rejuvenated space, which has nurtured generations, now boasts a perfect blend of its rustic Cape Cod character and a clutter-free, modern minimalist design.

My Routine

Tiago Moraes Sarmento, managing director for Belmond in Southern Africa, counters an unpredictable existence with a consistent commitment to wellness.

The first thing you notice about Tiago Moraes Sarmento is his boundless energy. It’s a quality that has seen him go from his native Portugal to extended stints in Mexico, China, Brazil, and several other countries. Now settled in South Africa, he oversees Belmond’s properties in the region and serves as general manager of the brand’s renowned Mount Nelson hotel in Cape Town. Sarmento lives at the hotel with his wife, the health coach Mariana Prince, and their two children, ages 7 and 9. Despite the unpredictability of a hotelier’s life, he remains unswerving with his wellness routine. “You really have to keep consistent to have a result where you feel good,” he says. “Because it happens to us all, that when you start deviating, it affects everything else in your life.” Here’s how he does it.

FITNESS: I started playing rugby at age 6 in Portugal, and I’ve played in all 13 countries where I’ve lived. It’s always been a dream of mine to play in South Africa, but back surgery kept me from that dream, so now I play touch rugby— same rules, but you cannot tackle. I play for 90 minutes, twice a week; I work with a calisthenics coach twice a week; the other three days of the week, I either play tennis with a coach here at Mount Nelson

or lift weights at the gym. All of that starts at 6 a.m. Being a hotelier, I always know what time I start my day, but I never know when I finish.

NUTRITION: I very rarely drink alcohol during the week; I keep that for Friday or Saturday social drinking. On a daily basis, I do a mental estimate of my macronutrient intake, with a goal of 120 grams of protein, 70 grams of fat, and 70 grams of carbs. So, if I had a bad day of eating too much fat, I’ll have a dinner that is low on fat. My wife helps me a lot. Once or twice a year, we actually keep track of our macronutrients for a week using the Cronometer app, just to reset and get back on track. It’s good fun.

MINDFULNESS: It’s something I’m paying much more attention to in the last year. Whatever I’m doing, if it’s with the kids, I want to really be 100 percent conscious and turn off everything else. If I’m working out, being 100 percent present and leaving my cell phone on the side. Being 100 percent present with the guests. Giving each moment of the day a higher level of focus has helped me tremendously. It just gives you an inner sense of health and joy that I think is very important nowadays. SIX

The Brand: A labor of love from motherand-daughter duo Ladan and Tanaz Shayan, Shay Jewelry launched in 2003—while Tanaz was still a student at Beverly Hills High— and is based in West Hollywood’s Design District. Since its founding, the brand—which encompasses playful yet elegant designs that include chain links, glittery crescent moons, and stars—has expanded to offer unisex pieces and a Mini Me range.

The Inspiration: “We look to standout local landmarks, like the Getty Center and Walt Disney Concert Hall, and have worked to echo their sleek lines and fluid curves,” says Tanaz. “We also call on nature with our celestial motifs, capturing the city’s enchanting nightscape, while our colorful gemstones are reminiscent of California’s flora and fauna.”

What’s Next: “I'm excited about our marquise collection,” says Tanaz. “Its modern designs catch the eye with natural emeralds, pink sapphires, and diamonds.”shayjewelry.com

Jacquie Aiche

The Brand: Debuted in 2007, Jacquie Aiche’s eponymous jewelry label exhibits a beautiful balance of naturalistic, earthy beauty and spiritual themes. Each locally crafted design from the Los Angeles–based brand is imbued with “good vibes” and carries a bohemian and free-spirited appeal with the right amount of glitz to transition from festival to upscale fete.

The Inspiration: “All of my collections have a vibrancy that reflects the beauty I see all around me here, from the wildflowers to the ocean,” says Aiche.

The Brand: Kether Parker and Robert Keith founded the Santa Monica–based brand—named for a 16th-century Dutch merchant ship sailed by Keith’s ancestors—in 2005. Centered on a clean, highly adaptable tri-link motif, all designs present a grounded radiance. The Inspiration: A thoughtful, ongoing evolution of the brand’s signature Maker’s Mark tri-link motif.

What’s Next: A new Venice location. And, adds Keith, “We’re very excited about the newest Grand-Link Lariat necklace. It’s mega!” hoorsenbuhs.com

The brand’s interlinked aesthetic is a stylish throughline for the rest of the collection, which includes layerable necklaces, modular earrings, and stackable bracelets made with a mix of metals and gems.

The Inspiration: Connectedness, kinetic energy, and chic geometric lines. “Some of our creative philosophies are that everything is connected, energy is transmutable,” says Kilcollin. “And the geometric purity of the circle.”

THE HOTELS ARE GREAT; THE RESTAURANTS ARE LEGENDARY. JUST HOW HAS NOBU MANAGED TO PARLAY THE SUCCESS OF ITS ICONIC JAPANESE HOT SPOTS INTO A COMPLETE LUXURY HOSPITALITY CONCEPT?

THE AGENCY
NOBU HOTEL SAN SEBASTIÁN 43 JOSE SALTO

it doesn’t matter the season or even the time of day that you visit Nobu Malibu: The setting is always rife with a mix of loyal locals, tourists vying for that oceanfront table, and, of course, celebrities that get photographed endlessly coming and going. In L.A., where hot spots are known to fade away quicker than they arrived, Nobu Malibu has cemented itself as an eternal beacon of exclusivity. But, for those truly in the know, there’s an even more coveted reservation—a room at the neighboring 16-room Nobu Ryokan. It can’t be booked online (you’ll have to put in an email request to stay there); there’s a two-night minimum; and its common spaces, like the Zen lobby, Japanese gardens, and private beachfront sundecks, are only available to guests.

Indeed, Nobu Ryokan is the perfect complement to the flagship restaurant it draws its inspiration from, but it is just one iteration of the brand, and it stands in contrast with the 206-room Nobu hotel in Miami, which takes reservations the traditional way. Suffice to say, Nobu’s offerings are as exceptional as you would expect while also being refreshingly diverse.

“The hallmarks of a Nobu hotel extend beyond aesthetics and amenities; our portfolio is tied together by the philosophy of Kokoro, which comes from the Japanese word for ‘heart’ and is at the core of the hotels, residences, and restaurants,” says Trevor Horwell, CEO of Nobu Hospitality. “Since we opened our first hotel, in Las Vegas in 2013, our successful expansion can be attributed to a combination of strategic vision, dedication to quality, and the timeless appeal of our brand ethos.”

Nobu isn’t the first restaurant brand to try converting its restaurant guests to hotel guests; but where brands like Hard Rock and Planet Hollywood have lost steam, Nobu is pushing

ahead, with more than 40 hotels open and in development. “Our strategy is guided by a commitment to growth in key global markets while also staying attuned to emerging trends and opportunities,” says Horwell. “We actively seek out destinations that offer potential for long-term success and align with our brand values and vision.”

The philosophy has also worked well as Nobu has begun to enter the residential market. “We recently hit an incredible milestone with the sale of the penthouse at Nobu Residences Abu Dhabi, which achieved a record-breaking price of $37.3 million.

This points to an impressive trajectory for our residential projects over the coming years, and I’m excited to oversee our continued expansion into this space,” Horwell says. “Further to opening residences in Los Cabos last year, we’ll welcome 660 units in Toronto in 2024, with pipeline projects in Da Nang, Abu Dhabi, Al Marjan Island, and Al Khobar.”

With existing hotels everywhere from Marrakech, Morocco, and San Sebastián, Spain, to Atlanta, Ga.—each of which includes its own Nobu restaurant—and more set to open in Orlando, Fla., New York City, the Dominican Republic, and Tulum, Mexico— Nobu is taking luxury hospitality to the next level. The brand clearly has mastered creating properties that reflect their surroundings—fitting in while also standing out. “As we begin our expansion into residences, the spirit of what Nobu has come to stand for will be further exemplified,” says Horwell. “[It’s about creating] a place to relax and savor an experience in an atmosphere charged with a sense of being a part of something rather extraordinary.”

Mocktail Magic

Beyond Dry January, alcohol-free imbibing is here to stay.

Whether you’re looking to curb your alcohol consumption or abstain altogether for health reasons, there’s a booming “mindful drinking” space to explore.

Head to Chinatown in Los Angeles, where Stacey Mann and Summer Phoenix opened the city’s first zero-proof mocktail bar, Stay. Forget the bright, spartan coffee shop—this is sexy and seductive, like a hidden drinking den, and perfect for a date-night rendezvous. Beverage director Derek Brown, author of Mindful Mixology: A Comprehensive Guide to No- and Low-Alcohol Cocktails, has created a menu named for the 12 Chinese zodiac signs, featuring house-made juices, fresh herbs, and premium zero-proof spirits.

While the nonalcoholic spirits category is rife with bottled options, from bourbon to vodka, the Houston-based brand Cut Above and its four expressions are versatile enough to be used in everything from the Mushroom Fat Washed Old-Fashioned at Captain Foxheart’s Bad News Bar & Spirit Lodge, in Houston, to a

Mezcal Cactus Margarita at Bar Calico, in New York. According to Bar Calico’s head bartender, Alex Dominguez, “This [nonalcoholic] drink is refreshing and salty, with a slight smokiness, and tastes exactly like a margarita without needing to add the salt.” Not just relying on a juice

blend, the mezcal uses natural flavors, including Cubeba pepper extract, chipotle pepper extract, Persian lime oil, and a touch of smoke.

Stemming from a desire to be part of the celebration without sacrificing well-being, French Bloom is the creation of Maggie FrerejeanTaittinger, of the Michelin Guide and famous Champagne family, and model Constance Jablonski. Bottled in southwestern France, this premium sparkling wine is organic and vegan certified, with zero sulfites or added sugars. It makes a great base for a faux Champagne cocktail but can also be found by the glass or bottle at such iconic venues as The Beverly Hills Hotel, the Ritz-Paris, Annabel’s, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, and The Carlyle, a Rosewood Hotel, among others.

For the ultimate nightcap at home, Boisson in New York just started carrying a new line of liqueurs by French-based Giffard. The options include Elderflower, Ginger, Grapefruit, and Pineapple, which can also be shipped across the United States for a sweet, booze-free ending to your evening.

fabrizio Schenardi, executive chef of the Four Seasons Resort Orlando, thought he was getting pranked when the call came in. The hotel’s sun-washed restaurant, Ravello, was being considered for an Italian Taste Certification. “I was like, ‘Yeah, sure,’ ” says the Rivoli, Italy–born Schenardi, who then quickly ascertained that it was a legit award administered by the Minister of Agriculture.

A CSI-level forensic audit of Ravello’s kitchen began: menus, wine lists, invoices for Piedmontese olive oil, receipts for the Paolo Mariani 00 flour he transforms into pappardelle and squid-ink bucatini, photos of limoncello barcodes, videos of San Marzano tomatoes. Ravello received a platinum-level certification, the only restaurant in the United States to do so—not in New York or Los Angeles but in ascendant Orlando, where Italian food doesn’t mean the Italian pavilion at EPCOT anymore.

America is in the midst of the great equalizing of restaurant scenes, where always-a-bridesmaid Philadelphia—recipient of the most James Beard Awards last year—has leveled up to (some say surpassed) New York, and where second (and third) cities like San Antonio and Tucson have the talent and cultural capital to compete with Austin and Phoenix. Both of the former, for example, are the only UNESCO Cities of Gastronomy in the United States.

Instead of heading to San Francisco or Chicago, graduates of San Antonio’s Culinary Institute of America are staying in town, and chefs like Andrew Ho, Andrew Samia, and Sean Wen are opening exuberant, idiosyncratic restaurants like the Thai-meets-Texas BBQ, Curry Boys.

As for Orlando, “In the past 10 years, it has evolved a lot,” says Schenardi, who notes the food-savvier residents and emerging neighborhoods like the Milk District. “Before it was only typical American food, now there’s Chinese, Filipino,” and, of course, “real Italian.”

Academy Award–winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh revels in bringing Bolivia’s national drink to a broader audience.

While he was in Spain filming Che in 2007, Steven Soderbergh was given the distilled spirit singani by a Bolivian member of his crew. After sipping the Bolivian brandy created from Muscat of Alexandria grapes, the acclaimed director decided it would be his personal mission to make singani—produced in Bolivia for five centuries—available to consumers outside of its native South American country.

Just as he has done for his celebrated films, Soderbergh enlisted the best in the business to help realize his goal: the nearly 100-year-old Casa Real, Bolivia’s leading singani producer, and its CEO, Luis Pablo Granier.

“When you make a movie, eventually there’s an end to the process: a finished film,” says Soderbergh. “It’s only taken me 10 years of being in the marketplace to realize there’s no end to the singani story. Each new person out there taking that first sip becomes directly linked to a narrative that goes back 500 years. You can’t say that about a movie.”

In 2023, the U.S. government formally recognized singani as a particular brandy produced in Bolivia—a designation that Soderbergh himself rallied for—and now, thanks to expanded trade opportunities, you can find his labor of love, Singani 63, in the United States, London, and the Caribbean; in bars, from Death & Co (New York, Denver, Los Angeles) to Sweet Liberty Miami; in partnership with Magic Mike Live (Las Vegas, London); and on offer for delivery via buysingani63.com.

National “startender” Julian Cox has used Singani 63 in some of his cocktails, and its unique characteristics have made it a favorite ingredient in his bar cabinet. “It offers aromas akin to fine wine or a high-end gin,” he says, “and it infuses cocktails with added depth and complexity, while elevating the overall flavor profile.”

Perpetual Pioneers

The Catena family is paving the way for the future of winemaking.

Nicolás Catena Zapata may have placed Argentine wines, particularly Malbec, on the world wine map in the early 1990s, but his daughter, now managing director of the family-run Bodega Catena Zapata, shares that there’s still more work to be done. “Our mission is to make Argentine wines that can stand with the best of the world,” says Laura Catena. “My personal goal,” she adds, “is that every collector [will] have a section for Argentine wine.”

The Mendoza-based, award-winning winery—voted number one at the World’s Best Vineyards 2023—has never shied away from pioneering uncharted territory for the region. In the mid-2000s, Catena helped create a sustainability protocol that hundreds of Argentine wineries now follow; it has reduced the weight of all Catena wine bottles by 40%, to reduce their carbon footprint.

“Nobody has taken the time to inform the consumer . . . [that] up to 60% of the carbon footprint of a bottle of wine comes from the glass bottle and its transport,” she says. This is why she’s launching an educational component to accompany the company’s lighter-weight bottles. “I think that if wine lovers knew that lighter-weight bottles had a lower carbon footprint, they would prefer them.

“To me,” Catena continues, “sustainability means leaving the Earth in equal or better shape than we found it in.”

The environment is particularly important to Catena, as it’s all-encompassing in Mendoza, from the omnipresence of the

Andes Mountains to the wide-open countryside that she says newcomers need at least a week to explore. It’s also part of her heritage as an Argentine vintner.

“Wine is the national beverage [here],” she says, stressing the importance of maintaining the farming and winemaking practices of her ancestors. “Our goal at Catena is to use science to study our nature and our wine culture in order to preserve it.” n

HOW TO LIVE WITH GREAT ART

Art Partners and Brian Ludlow are making notable contemporary works more accessible.

art had always been an area of interest for Brian Ludlow. About a decade ago, during his law career, he was invited to visit a development home coming to market in the coveted Bird Streets neighborhood of Los Angeles. The house was striking in every aspect, yet it lacked one crucial element: art. The developers sought a level of art and curation that matched the caliber of the home, but no scalable solution existed at the time. So, Ludlow set out to create one.

With the support of architect Paul McClean and clients Cody Leibel and Justin Huchel, Ludlow founded Creative Art Partners (creativeartpartners.com) in 2017. The initial theory behind CAP was that great homes deserve great art—and great art enhances the sale of great homes.

While CAP began with a somewhat narrow focus, it has since grown to have eight divisions and a national client base. The company provides both rental and sales services for leading residential, hospitality, workspace, and commercial clients. CAP’s business model of acquiring great contemporary art and creating innovative solutions to help clients live with great art has put the business in a league of its own.

“On the collecting side of our business, we guide some of the most important interior designers’ art buying, and help amazing new

and established collectors and celebrity clients build great art collections,” says Ludlow. Along the journey, CAP realized that the traditional art world and its more passive methods of engagement are often not aligned with people’s real wants and needs. “We want to create an art experience that ultimately helps close the gap between wanting to live with great art and actually starting to live with great art.”

The company’s collection of over 15,000 artworks is unprecedented. Balancing foresight, risk, and great taste, CAP’s dedicated art-acquisitions team scours the world in search of talent. The stories of emerging artists found by CAP who have gone on to become stars are countless. “At the scale we’re operating at in the art world, we have a voice and responsibility to help move the needle in terms of taste, what art people see and ultimately have access to,” says Ludlow. “When I get time to reflect, I am truly in awe of the incredible artists we’re able to support, the artworks we’re able to acquire, and then our ability to bring those so seamlessly to our clients.”

Unsurprisingly, Ludlow’s own collection at home is an ever-revolving display of emerging and established talents. However, there are two constants: works from the Los Angeles–based artist Petra Cortright and from the Australian artist Gene A’Hern.

HERE, LUDLOW SHARES HIS TIPS FOR BUILDING A GREAT COLLECTION OF YOUR OWN:

Don’t rush into it—especially without a plan. Consider where the pieces will go and how they’ll work together.

Trust your instincts and attraction. If you’re drawn to something, notice that reaction. Explore it and learn more about the piece or the artist. The beautiful thing about collecting art is that it’s a personal process of discovering yourself—your own preferences, interests, and style—and being fearlessly curious along the way.

Embrace variety. The art you choose doesn’t have to be in the same style, period, or medium. In fact, contrast and diversity often create more dynamic, interesting collections.

Figure out if you want to start with a permanent or a rotating collection. If you want to keep your art fresh, good news—CAP|Home, a product from Creative Art Partners, allows people to rent individual artworks or complete collections, rotate them if their taste or space changes, and accrue credit while they rent toward purchasing. It’s become one of CAP’s most popular services for good reason.

MAD MAXIMALIST

The joys of living boldly and brightly amid the chaos of creativity.

as a collective design consciousness, we’ve been aesthetically monogamous for some time now with all-white interiors (perhaps subtly punctuated by moments of rattan and beige). But all signs are pointing to the next evolution of interior design skewing toward more. A riot of rococo mirrors, opulent brocade textures, graphic wallpapers that demand attention, bold floor coverings—it might be time to forgo living in a contemporary museum in favor of making a personal statement. Today’s most eye-catching designs are more “mob wife” loud luxury than “clean girl” minimalism.

Social media is saying as much. Oren John ( @orenmeetsworld), known as the Internet’s Creative Director, spoke to the end of minimalism on Instagram: “We need to end interior minimalism . . . give me materials. Crown molding

and wainscoting emerging like a phoenix from the ashes of time to bless our living spaces. Simple items complemented by stand-out items. Vibrancy. Accent ceilings. Perhaps a pink stone. Bespoke nails and art hangers.”

It wasn’t so long ago that we were all envious of Kim Kardashian’s Axel Vervoodt–designed Bel Air home. But are we no longer finding bliss in beige? Even Marie Kondo, the high priestess of minimalism, went back on her decluttering mantra and embraced the mess of life and parenthood. Achieving a perfectly curated space is no longer the end goal—and for that, we can all breathe a sigh of relief.

“The monochromatic allure of black and white is fading away,” says The Agency’s Pasadena-based Carmine Sabatella, who is not only a real estate agent but also a design professional. “In fact, it’s quickly looking quite dated. We’re now witnessing a deliberate movement toward eccentric elements, reminiscent of the bold expressions of the 1950s and ’60s. The key is thoughtful curation and true eclecticism; you have to intentionally bring the old and new together. Modern and vintage. Dare to mix patterns, saturate colors, and blend the old with the new. When you do, you have the opportunity to create incredible dimension and homey comfort.”

After all, there’s creativity and freedom in maximalism. Seeking out opulent chandeliers or plush velvet sofas from estate sales. Hunting for gold-framed, old-world art that transports you to another time and place. Rejecting the notion that elevated design must adhere to strict rules, we are instead embracing the chance to express ourselves in all our glorious complexity through our spaces. It’s about creating rooms that tell a story. It’s about play and expression. We all want to feel something, especially in an AI world where the human aspect of art and design feels at stake.

In a world that often feels chaotic and uncertain, maximalism joins us for the ride. After all, life is too short to play it safe. So, go ahead, indulge your senses, be wacky, and bring treasures into your home. Isn’t life more fun when it’s a little bit loud? Designers are screaming yes.

A pro’s tips for creating exceptional arrangements at home.

Anyone who has attempted to re-create an Athena Calderone–inspired minimalist centerpiece on their kitchen countertop knows—it’s harder than it looks. We chatted with New York–based florist Rachel Clark, of Dearest Rachel (dearestrachel.com), about her dos and don’ts of creating stunning arrangements for the home. With clients such as Gucci, Rolling Stone, Chanel, and Cynthia Rowley, she certainly knows the secrets to floral chicness.

When it comes to creating of-themoment floral arrangements, “more is more,” says Clark. “Right now, design is all about nostalgic maximalism—and floral arrangements are no exception.” She leans toward decadent and whimsical designs. Texture and color are, of course, important, and playing with shades of colors that complement each other is something she pays an incredible amount of attention to. “Color and texture are my two favorite components to play with, and truly set arrangements apart,” says Clark. “The wrong hues can affect your designs negatively, and not paying attention to texture can destroy your designs.”

Variety is also integral to creating depth and interest, and Clark suggests being fearless

when it comes to unexpected textures and wide-ranging color palettes. “You want your design to evoke an emotion and give the viewer an opportunity to experience beauty, even if only for a brief moment,” she says. “Consider what era, artist, or style could inspire your arrangements. My work is heavily inspired by the French Impressionism art movement of the late 1800s.” Finally, Clark urges DIY artists to go for the unexpected. “Practice makes perfect, and understanding the foundation of designing is key,” says Clark. “I learn new tricks and new ways constantly, and I think that makes you continuously a better designer—which leads to more stunning arrangements.”

It’s What’s Outside That Counts

Inner Gardens founder Stephen Block knows the value of exterior design. By

When celebrated landscape designer Stephen Block founded Los Angeles–based Inner Gardens in 1990, he brought together his two great loves: plants and antiques. Now, he and his team design, install, and maintain gardens for both commercial and residential properties, including $200 million homes; and for his company’s shop, he has amassed one of the industry’s most extensive collections of outdoor accessories. Here, he talks about the company he has cultivated.

What were the early days of your business like?

After seven years in commercial real estate, one day I just decided that I wanted to go back to my first love: plants. I knew a lot of building owners, so my first project was maintaining the plants in a 400,000-square-foot commercial building. After that, it was all word of mouth. I also started collecting odd and unusual plants and containers. I would pull things out of the

L.A. River, like a crumpled pink can, find a really weird plant to put in it, and sell them in seconds. Eventually, I found a greenhouse in Culver City where I could store the collection I was amassing from flea markets and antique stores. Ultimately, I’m a treasure hunter.

How have attitudes to outdoor space changed during your career?

The exterior has become a very important part of one’s home, and indoor-outdoor living has become very big. Interior designers saw the opportunity to treat outdoor spaces like another room, with sofas, chairs, firepits, etcetera. And they realized that they needed someone like me to help them execute that.

What value do you bring to each of your exterior design projects?

I’m trained in horticulture, the art of growing plants, so I design from that perspective. But oftentimes I’ll start out with a bench or a fountain, since I have such a large inventory of antiques. Scale is super important—I find that most people underscale their plants and trees— and quality is, too. Our gardens are full and rich from day one, rather than needing to grow in for three or five years. Our clients don’t want to see dirt.

You’ve been everywhere sourcing art for the garden. What are some of your most spectacular finds?

One of the pieces that I recently sourced in Italy and just placed at a client’s home is a beautiful $45,000, 18th-century statue of Minerva on a 19th-century stand. It’s a bust fragment, which fits into my wabi-sabi propensity—it has to be missing at least one of its extremities. I previously sourced a 4-foot Chinese marble seated Buddha from an estate in Newport, Rhode Island, which was beautifully worn, serene, quiet, and substantial. I sold it to a very significant collector in Montecito for around $35,000. And the highest sale I ever made was $85,000. That was quite a long time ago, so that figure would probably be much [higher] today because prices have climbed due to scarcity and demand in the garden category. People collect these pieces and hold on to them like they do Birkin bags.

IT’S PERSONAL

When it comes to creating unique interiors, Commune Design has a magic touch.

Since its founding in 2004, the Los Angeles–based design studio Commune has created an impressive portfolio of projects spanning the worlds of residential, commercial, and hospitality. In the last few years alone, the company has worked on mountain retreats in Big Sky, Mont., and Switzerland; a historic Maybeck home in Montecito, Calif.; the restaurant Fanny’s, located inside the Academy Museum in Los Angeles; and a brick-andmortar store for Goop.

“One common thread between our projects is a respect for the work of artisans and craftspeople,” says Commune cofounder Steven Johanknecht. Commune’s design approach also applies to a variety of scales—from a trailer in Paradise Cove in Malibu, Calif., to sprawling Old Hollywood mansions like 1013 N. Roxbury Drive in Beverly Hills.

The Roxbury Drive property had gone through a series of renovations at different times, resulting in a “patchwork of mismatched materials and styles that interrupted the flow of the house,” Johanknecht says. of Hollywood details, such as tiling, exposed wooden beams, and wide-arched doorways. No detail was overlooked.

“If we can’t find something in the marketplace, we design it,” says Johanknecht. “For us, it’s really important to delve into not only that big picture, but also every little detail. Clients appreciate that.”

A commitment to collaboration with each individual client is another reason Johanknecht thinks Commune has been successful. “We do a lot of research and interviews with the clients to identify their needs,” he says. “And from there, we create a bespoke solution for the property, for the client, and for the moment in time.”

A National Treasure

SAn insider’s view of the epic gardens at the Green Gables Estate.

et within Northern California’s exclusive Woodside enclave—less than an hour from San Francisco—Green Gables is an estate that stands in a class all its own. This iconic treasure weaves together exceptional design, natural beauty, and a historic pedigree in a way that defies all superlatives.

Green Gables is home to the largest gardens ever created by the architects Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene—better known as Greene and Greene (their U.S. firm) or the Greene brothers—a leading force in the early-20th-century American Craftsman design movement.

Conceived by the industrialist Mortimer Fleishhacker Sr. in 1911, Green Gables comprises

seven homes, three swimming pools, a lily pond, and an incredible football-field-length Roman pool. Its grounds are carefully interconnected by paths and manicured lanes, inviting continuous exploration. Spanning 74 acres, the property boasts dozens of types of plants—including  sequoia, deodara, and olive trees, California live oaks, and heirloom roses, just to name a few.

The formal gardens are an enchanting combination of English and Italian design concepts and have been exquisitely conceived to complement the surrounding topography.

To better understand just how epic this property is, we spoke with tastemaker Julia Berger Fleishhacker, Green Gables’ most recent full-time resident. Founder of Julia B. Casa (juliabcasa.com), she is an accomplished interior designer and the wife of Marc Fleishhacker, one of the owners of the Green Gables Estate, whose connection to the property dates back five generations.

HOME & DESIGN

“As beautiful as the Woodside area is, and it is certainly a favorite place to live for many of the world’s most accomplished individuals, there is simply nothing comparable to the setting, scale, and beauty of Green Gables— certainly not in Northern California,” Berger Fleishhacker says. Here, she shares what it’s like to be “in residence” at Green Gables, how her favorite season at the historic estate presents itself, and more.

How have Green Gables’ grounds evolved over the years?

As my husband likes to say, “Great estates evolve,” and that has undoubtedly been the case with Green Gables. In a family where it often feels as if there are twice as many opinions as there are actual family members, there is at least one thing which we are all in unanimous

agreement about, and that is, the estate has never looked better—certainly not in our lifetime.

The estate was first occupied by the family in 1912, yet it was not until at least 10 years later that the Roman pool was completed and then the free-form swimming pool at the top of the hill, followed by the tea and dairy house and then the Wurster House, which was built in the early 1930s.

Nevertheless, it is also quite remarkable how the original core design principles, including the primary tree and plant species, have remained a consistent testament to the vision and wisdom of the Greene brothers and the completeness of their design efforts.

What is it like to live on an estate with gardens like these?

On the one hand, the scale of the gardens is at

an entirely different level, even when compared to the many fabulous large homes I have visited. From its 30,000 square feet of lawns to the football-field-sized Roman pool, Green Gables is a remarkably large property.

On the other hand, the genius of the Greene brothers’ design rests in their ability to have created so many intimate and private spaces in this larger-than-life setting.

What is your favorite time of year at the estate?

Green Gables is blessed with an amazing climate, and one of my favorite aspects of living at the estate is waking up in the summer mornings and gazing at the “cotton candy” fog as it quickly melts with the arrival of the morning sun. The great blue heron is doing his morning rounds between the reservoir and the lily pond where the ducks are having their morning swim; the deer are grazing on the lawn; and you can often detect the Pacific Ocean as its lightly salted mists ride the currents over the hills from Half Moon Bay.

It’s a setting that is always in movement with the numerous moments that define the days at Green Gables; from sunup to sunset, the everchanging light, gentle afternoon breezes, and scents of redwood, roses, and pine are constant stimuli for all my senses.

How have you used the grounds over the years?

Some of my personal highlights include getting married at the Roman pool outlook, as well as hosting an “intimate gathering” for Apple with over 1,400 guests. Regardless of the occasion, what has always amazed me is the endless sense of peace and harmony that this natural setting evokes.

When people see the property for the first time, what do they ask?

Countless are the tours I have given over the years. Questions are rare at first, and what prevails is a sense of wonder and awe of the exquisite beauty of the setting. There is a sense that you can reach out and touch the Santa Cruz Mountains. n

PART DESERT HAVEN, part fashionable hideaway, part gritty metropolis—there’s no one thing that defines the ever-vibrant city of Marrakech, but with so many options for luxury accommodations, choosing your own adventure starts the moment you pick where to stay.

Many leading hotel brands have opened up in the city, giving an overwhelming abundance of options, but two of the standouts aren’t from international chains. Unabashedly luxurious, La Mamounia has been a leader in the city’s decadent hotel scene since it opened more than 100 years ago. Now, it’s as compelling as ever, designed so that guests never need to leave its grounds. Explore the hotel’s many luxury boutiques (including Saint Laurent and Dior), imbibe at the cozy Le Churchill Bar, or unwind at the traditional spa. With a three-story Moroccan restaurant (which even has its own club), two Jean-Georges restaurants, a movie theater, a private wine room, an expansive pool area (a complete scene of its own), and glorious gardens, it’s perfectly fine if this is the only part of Marrakech you see.

The king of Morocco opened the Royal Mansour in 2010 and spared no expense in his aim of creating one of the best hotels in the world. Rooms here consist of three-story private riads, each with service doors that connect to a series of behind-the-scenes passageways, allowing them to be attended to without guests ever seeing a trolley toting luggage or a housekeeping cart overflowing with towels. The elegant pool area and the French garden restaurant, Le Jardin, are conducive to relaxed lunches, but don’t miss out on the acclaimed Italian restaurant Sesamo by chef Massimiliano Alajmo. One of the best experiences to be had in the city is at the property’s own cooking school, which opened last year and offers daily classes for Italian or Moroccan cuisine, as well as private lessons—all of which end in its

own dining room, with glass doors that look out into the gardens. Just 15 minutes from the bustle of the medina, Amanjena appeals to those looking for traditional Moroccan accommodations. Though it only opened in 2000, the property’s salmon-colored walls, turquoise tiles, and subtle decor feel as if the resort is steeped in history. Allow the hotel to arrange unique experiences, like exploring the desert by camel and arriving at an Amanjena tent for a private Berber dinner under the stars.

For a great balance between tranquil setting and mainstream luxuries, head to the Mandarin Oriental, located just 10 minutes from town, where rooms start at 1,453 square feet and feature their own garden and plunge pool. There’s also a lively scene and Cantonese fare at the property’s Ling Ling by Hakkasan restaurant. Or, for an extended retreat, add a few nights to unwind at Kasbah Tamadot, Sir Richard Branson’s hideaway in the Atlas Mountains, about an hour from the city.

Marrakech musts: Get lost in the souk for at least a couple of hours. If you do like shopping, nothing is better than the finds at El Fenn Boutique, where you can discover a mix of striking new and one-of-a-kind items ranging from clothing and candles to lighting and furnishings. Skipping the Yves Saint Laurent Museum and adjacent Jardin Majorelle would be like visiting Paris and not seeing the Eiffel Tower. For a change of scenery from your own hotel, get a day pass to the Beldi Country Club and have lunch poolside amid olive trees and rose gardens. Take in some history and explore one of the old local palaces, like Bahia, which dates back to the 19th century.

VIBRANT CITIES LOVE to brag about their traffic, and Istanbul is no exception—and no joke. Sites like the Hagia Sophia may seem like a quick Uber ride away, but in traffic, a 15-minute walk might take 40 minutes by car, so choose your hotel based on what you’re looking to explore.

Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts has two locations in the city. Opt for the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet, which was once a prison, and stay in the old town near the Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar. The unusual configuration of the resort lends itself to an array of stunning rooms that feel cozy, even if you’re in a two-story suite with views of the city’s tiled rooftops in the distance. Should you wish to experience a more emerging version of the city, avoiding the mainstream, book a room at Soho House Istanbul and explore its artsy surrounds.

Love the water? Though the newly opened Peninsula Istanbul made its debut just last year, its four historic buildings—which combined offer 177 rooms—date back hundreds of years and are set along the Bosphorus Strait. The property’s elegant seaside bar offers an ideal vantage point for taking in the setting, while its rooftop restaurant, Gallada, features Turkish Asian cuisine and one of the most coveted reservations in town.

A bit farther north, at the setting of the Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus, it’s OK if your jaw drops. Located between two of the city’s major bridges, the views, the lights, the ships passing—it’s enough to make you never leave your balcony. But, at the very least, make it out of your room for the spa and its indoor pool, expansive health club with private yoga and Pilates offerings, and indulgent treatments that can last as long as three hours.

Want to feel removed from the city entirely? Book a room at Six Senses Kocatas Mansions in the far north of the city. The property entrance is at sea level, but it climbs up a hill to offer sweeping, bird’s-eye views. The hotel might feel like a boutique property, but standard Six Senses offerings like wellness programming, a dedicated farm, and sustainable elements abound. —S.B.

MEXICO CITY

IN 2004, THE Tony Scott film Man on Fire was released and made Americans fearful that they’d be kidnapped the minute they set foot in Mexico City. (A bodyguard, played by Denzel Washington, takes revenge on the kidnapper of the child he was supposed to protect, but spoiler alert: The child’s father staged the whole thing to get the ransom money for himself.) Much has changed in the last 20 years, including Americans’ perceptions of safety in the city, the number of acclaimed restaurants (Quintonil ranks no. 9 on the World’s 50 Best, while Pujol ranks no. 13, Rosetta no. 49), and the level and range of hotels that have opened.

The city is dense with museums, and if you head to one of Mexico City’s institutions, like Museo Jumex, on a

Saturday, you’re more likely to find yourself surrounded by locals soaking up culture than by tourists checking a list in a guidebook. Artistic landmarks abound; visits to the Frida Kahlo house and to Casa Luis Barragán are musts. Restaurants are world-class—if you can’t snag a reservation at Rosetta, aim for a table at any of the also-fantastic restaurants that surround it, like Meroma or Blanco Colima. And of course, there’s shopping (see “Will Travel for Ceramics,” page 86). You could stay a month and not see it all, which also means that it’s OK to start with a quick trip.

First-time visitors getting to know the city will especially relish a stay in the Polanco neighborhood, the “Beverly Hills of Mexico City,” at Casa Polanco,

which debuted in 2022. This plush, 19room boutique hotel oozes charm, with historic architectural details, attentive service, modern amenities, and an ideal location in front of Parque Lincoln, just steps from luxury shops.

Traveling with children? They might enjoy the courtyard-style, recently renovated Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City, complete with outdoor spaces and a rooftop pool deck. Or get a panoramic view of the entire city from the 58-floor Ritz-Carlton Mexico City, which opened in 2021, bringing uber-contemporary vibes and restaurants like Cipriani and Carlotta Reforma Sky Bar.

Finally, those looking for a boutique, upscale experience in a quiet part of the city will enjoy the new Hotel Alexander, which opened in April with 26 rooms and a private caviar bar. You could also choose to mingle with locals and hear about their favorite parts of town with a stay at Soho House, which debuted with hotel rooms open to the public and a member’s club in late 2023. —S.B. n

The Rise of

PADEL

Just in time for your pickleball fatigue, there’s a new racket sport to master. by

71 THE AGENCY

Pickleball, move over. It’s padel’s time on center court.

A cross between tennis and squash is the best way to describe the latest racket sport to take the world by storm. During Acapulco’s golden age, the Mexican businessman Enrique Corcuera created padel in the backyard of his Las Brisas beach house. Working with the space he had, Corcuera created in the 1960s a court that was smaller than a tennis court (approximately 65 feet by 98 feet) and placed walls around it to prevent balls from flying over. (Originally it was intended for fronton, another racket-based sport.) He used tennis rules to count score, but unlike in tennis, the walls were part of padel (which is typically played with four players, as doubles with teams of two) and wooden beach rackets replaced traditional tennis rackets. The modifications helped shape a game that was easier and more enjoyable for all ages.

Today, modern padel rackets look a bit different, but the essence of Corcuera’s creation remains. “The sport has the advantage of tennis,” says the founder’s son, Enrique Corcuera Jr. “You’re playing face-to-face with your opponent, and [the court] has walls like squash or fronton—it’s the best of both worlds. It’s easier to learn than tennis, and you can continue to advance.”

That, Corcuera Jr. says, is the difference between padel and pickleball: “Pickle is easy to learn but you can’t advance to a higher level—there’s no room for improvement. With padel, you get better and there’s a lot of community and friendship involved. It’s about people watching and socializing, too. It’s a family and social game, where you could have a grandfather playing with a nephew, which in tennis you can’t really do because it’s more difficult.”

The popularity of padel spread from Mexico’s elite crowd and eventually to Europe by way of Spanish royalty. Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe-Langenburg was introduced to padel while vacationing in Acapulco, where he played in Corcuera’s backyard. He took the sport home with him when he built the first padel courts outside of Mexico, in 1974, at his ritzy Marbella Club Hotel. The Spanish courts evolved the game with wire fencing instead of surrounding walls, and from there, the Spanish King Juan Carlos I and tennis star Manuel Santana, a Wimbledon champion, played the game and furthered its popularity. In 1985, Corcuera’s wife, Viviana, created the official rules for padel, which was poised for more expansion.

Mexico made the sport official in 1993 with the creation of the International Padel Federation and the first Corcuera Cup took place at the Villa Vera Hotel in Acapulco. Two decades later, the World Padel Tour made its debut, and, most recently, Qatar Sports Investments acquired Premier Padel—the global professional padel tour—in time for the 2024 season.

“With padel, you get better and there’s a lot of community and friendship involved. It’s about people watching and socializing, too.”
–Enrique Corcuera Jr.

These days, padel is played all over the world, particularly in the fancier destinations (think all the Saints: St. Barts, St. Moritz, St.-Tropez, you get the idea). In Switzerland, the Tennis School St. Moritz, near the Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski, offers padel lessons with qualified trainers year-round, but come winter and summer, there’s a big influx of international guests (mainly from Italy, Germany, and Arab countries) requesting padel courts and lessons, according to founder and owner Maria Laura Eldahuk. The courts have the Alps as a stunning backdrop. Eldahuk also notes that the Swiss Tennis Federation has

voted to establish a sports federation for padel, as it did with tennis, “under the same structure, to drive the growth of this new sport.”

Over in Gstaad, Le Grand Bellevue hotel will organize its first padel tournament this summer. And at The Chedi Andermatt, guests enjoy two padel courts in front of the hotel.

Opened this spring in St.-Tropez, AREV—the latest hotel in the heart of the bustling French Riviera town—made its debut with a night-lit padel court. And, in case you missed it, the fashion house Maison Valentino took over Dubai’s chic padel spot Matcha Club for two weeks in late February.

In the most popular destinations for the sport—Mexico, Spain, and Argentina, the latter of which has more than 2 million players—there are countless places to play. In padel’s founding country, the five-star spa retreat Chablé Yucatán, set in the Maya Forest, offers padel courts for its guests, along with clinics and instructors to test their skills.

In Santa Monica, Calif., the ultra-exclusive private members club The Beach Club, or BC, has long offered its guests padel courts on the Pacific coast, and on the East Coast, July 2022 saw the debut of Padel Haus, the first members-only padel club in the States. The club opened its doors in Williamsburg, N.Y., and a second location followed in August 2023, in a 24,000-square-foot warehouse in Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood. The company raised $7.5 million in funding in 2023, and its founder and CEO, Santiago Gomez, said the company could open as many as 50 clubs throughout the country in the next five years.

Enthusiasm for the sport is clearly widespread. The Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi offers padel courts with complimentary 30-minute sessions with a resident tennis pro who was ranked in the top 100 in the world. In November 2022, Joali Maldives unveiled its padel court to celebrate the property’s four-year anniversary. Sister property Joali Being, just 10 minutes away, debuted its padel courts last fall. In Greece, the family-owned Cali Mykonos hotel unveiled new padel courts, in place of a former parking lot, with ocean views as part of its latest wellness offerings. In Ireland, Adare Manor built the country’s first indoor padel courts, called The Padel Club. And in Gothenburg, Sweden, there’s a padel club aptly named Acapulco in homage to the sport’s birthplace.

“Right now, it’s the fastest-growing sport in the world,” says Corcuera Jr. (The global padel industry, according to Deloitte, is valued at $2 billion and projected to surpass $4 billion by 2026.)

“We are very happy; we can’t believe it. In the upcoming Olympic Games, there is going to be padel played as an exhibition game, and in the next Olympics, people will play for medals.” n

THIS ULTRA-CONTEMPORARY, open-plan villa boasts a seafront location close enough for you to hear the waves lapping the sandy shore. Eros Cyprus’s large glass doors open to the infinity pool, expansive lawns lead to a private golden-sand beach, and views of the deep blue (almost cobalt) Mediterranean Sea are on display in all the rooms. Perfect for multigenerational travel, the villa has an en suite primary bedroom on the main floor and a kid-friendly bunk room on an upper level. The hospitality team of the completely serviced villa includes a host/concierge, food and beverage operations manager, housekeeping crew, and a private chef who provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The meals are fresh and bursting with flavor: fish (just caught by local fishermen), Halloumi cheese, red soil potatoes (unique to Cyprus).

The host can arrange personalized yoga in the villa’s garden, a day’s sail to a quiet beach, or a wine-tasting trip to the mountains (there are more than 300 family-run wineries in Cyprus).

The year-round warm climate is ideal for swimming and water sports. The nearby town of Ayia Napa has dozens of high-end restaurants, boozy bars, and techno clubs. It has been called Cyprus’s version of Ibiza: everyone parties until the sun comes up. From $9,800 per week, eroscyprus.com n

A museum-quality Hitomi Hosono–crafted piece that caught my eye at the Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono. Right: The stunning array of ceramics from Mexico City–based Perla Valtierra.

A GLOBAL JOURNEY TO DISCOVER—AND BRING HOME—HANDMADE TREASURES.

Perla Valtierra’s showroom in Mexico City.

6:20A.M.

A THURSDAY MORNING

in December at Mexico City International Airport. I’m at the gate, drenched in sweat. I have my Essential Cabin S carry-on and duffel topper—but I also have an oversize canvas shopping bag filled with four ceramic vases (three the size of watermelons and one the size of a spaghetti squash). I’m wearing a sweatshirt and a leather jacket over which I’ve placed a blanket I purchased the night before and didn’t have room for in my checked baggage—which includes a suitcase and a sturdy cardboard box, each entirely filled with ceramics. My hands want to break from the three liters of Reserva de la Familia extra añejo I’ve purchased duty-free. I’ve already logged 3,400 steps. Just get me on the plane.

When I booked the return flight from Mexico City to Los Angeles, I specifically chose the 7 a.m. departure on Aeromexico, as it was the only one that day on a Dreamliner. The lie-flat seats were a factor, but really, I wanted to ensure enough extra room in the overhead bins because I knew I’d be coming in hot.

Now, here I am, at the tail end of a 36-hour layover in Mexico City, after three days on the beach in Nicaragua. My extended stopover was driven by one desire: to visit the showroom and headquarters of Perla Valtierra, a ceramic designer whose work I had discovered two years prior at a resort in Zihuatanejo.

I’ve brought back ceramics from almost everywhere I’ve traveled: Portugal, Kenya, Japan, Mexico, Costa Rica, Harbour Island, Marrakech, Minneapolis, Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Puglia. If I ever visit Antarctica, trust me, I'll find a local potter. Sometimes, I discover artisans and showrooms by chance; other times, I’m on a mission. This Mexico City trip was definitely the latter.

I arrived late on Tuesday, checking into the boutique hotel Casa Polanco. I immediately unpacked and headed straight to the intersection of Avenida Presidente Masaryk and Calle Oscar Wilde, where I remembered there being a small courtyard-style shopping center. I was crushed to discover that the emporium of textiles, pottery from a variety of craftspeople, and other handmade crafts wasn’t there anymore. It was the holidays, though, and the streets were alive with Christmas markets, and every store seemed to be

selling handmade ornaments. I was back in heaven.

The following day, between visiting a handful of hotels in the morning and arriving for my 4 p.m. reservation at Pujol, I had a task. My hotel tours were done by 11:30 a.m., and by noon I was at Perla Valtierra, a space just off the street (breeze by and you could miss it) in an old building drenched in architectural moldings and charm. I walked into the courtyard and saw a table stacked high with pine-colored ceramics made for the holidays in a limited edition—plates and bowls of all sizes, vases, candlesticks. In the next room, a 14-person dining table was decorated with neutral pieces, while a corner held a mix of magenta vases and candlesticks (the last items from summer’s seasonal shade, I was told). Racks of mugs and other vessels lined the walls. I knew I was going to be there awhile.

By 1 p.m., I had made some decisions: place settings for nine (the most they had) consisting of dinner plates, salad plates, bowls, and a few smaller serving pieces; three large vases and four smaller vases; a medium-sized vase for the friends I was with in Zihuatanejo when I first saw Valtierra’s work; a smaller vase for another friend. In for a penny, in for a pound.

“Any chance I can get a discount because of the volume?” I asked the gentleman working in the showroom. “No, Perla doesn’t do that,” he said. “But it’s already a lot less here than it is buying online or in the [States].” (I already know this, which is part of why I’m there.) “However,” he continued, “tomorrow we start our friends and family discount for the holidays of 15% off. Do you want to make the purchases then?” I explained that I couldn’t because of my 7 a.m. flight out and asked if they might make an exception for me because I’d come all this way. He texted Perla. “She said ‘no.’”

No problemo—I was sold the minute I walked in the door. But it was worth a try.

Before I even left the shop, I was shooting myself for not bringing one of my many oversize duffels this trip. (The bodybag-size one from L.L. Bean with my initials monogrammed on it would have been particularly helpful.) “Where’s the nearest luggage store?” I asked as I handed over my Amex. “There’s a Walmart about 20 minutes away.” With Mexico City traffic, it ended up a two-hour expedition. When I returned with a reasonably sized suitcase, the shop was busy and the staff hadn’t had time to wrap anything yet. I suddenly looked at my watch and realized I might not make it to Pujol in time for my 4 p.m. reservation.

I started frantically wrapping pieces myself when Perla walked in. “No, it won’t work like that. They’ll break,” she insisted. She promised that she and her team would wrap them all perfectly to fit into the suitcase, and she suggested that I also take some in a sturdy cardboard box. “They won’t break if we pack it right,” she told me. (I know this from experience. A box of ceramics I once brought back from Morelia, Mexico, wasn’t

packed with enough filler paper, and two mugs and a small bowl didn’t make it; thankfully, though, they’ve been among very few casualties in my 20-plus years of roaming the world for handmade collectibles.) I agreed to the extra box, which I dug into once I was back in my hotel room to make sure everything was in order.

My earliest memory of traveling across the world and coming home with bags full of breakables is at the age of 15. The monthlong exchange program in Japan was fantastic and mesmerizing, and after I had seen every temple and shrine within a three-hour bullet train ride of Tokyo, I turned my attention to shopping. Somehow, the many bowls and serving pieces I found at the 100-yen store struck my fancy. I wasn’t old enough then to have an eye for craftsmanship and artistry, but lucky for me— and the people I make dinner for—my tastes have evolved. My eye has been educated. My packing skills honed.

The best-case scenario for traveling home with breakables that you’ve collected abroad is, you were smart enough to leave enough room in your suitcase for purchases, and you bought from a store that wrapped in paper and in bubble wrap. Then, there are the worst-case scenarios.

Some lessons I’ve learned the hard way: If you’re traveling in Africa with a soft-sided bag for safari and must check it, the breakables will break. If the store you’re buying from says they’ll ship it to you, there’s a chance you won’t end up with the exact item you meticulously inspected and picked out before you left. When the low-budget airline with the only direct flight from Niseko to Okinawa says there’s a weight limit of 7 kilograms for carry-on bags, they mean it (I was forced to check all of my bags and hold in my arms my laptop and extremely delicate—and heavy—ceramic basket, purchased in Kyoto, for 35 minutes as I waited in line at security and then walked to the gate). And finally, if you go home and order it online, it’s just not the same.

There’s rarely an instance when an American Airlines gate agent doesn’t insist I put my crossbody purse (just large enough to hold a phone, passport, wallet, and hand sanitizer) into my duffel so that I’m not boarding with “two personal items.”

So, the fact that I’ve made it this morning to the gate in the Mexico City airport with such a plethora of extra totes and layers already feels like a big win. I approach the gate agent who scans my boarding pass, and she barely looks at me before waving me on. Maybe it’s early for her too, I think. I board, and everything has its place in the overhead bins.

Once at LAX, I collect my bag and box, push everything in a cart to the curb, and collapse when I’m finally in my Uber headed home. It’s just past 10 a.m.

I usually get home and shower immediately to wash the plane layer off. Instead, I find myself moving items around in the kitchen: I need space for a (hopefully intact) collection of 40 plates and bowls, as well as seven vases of varying sizes. I reorganize. I stack. I purge. I find room for my new friends—and space for a few more to bring back on the next trip. n

THE RESERVE

The Reserve is an extraordinary, architecturally significant estate situated on nearly two ultra-private acres in the heart of Holmby Hills Surrounded by swaying palm trees, lush forest, and immaculate landscaping, this secluded oasis is an exceptional vision of modernist architecture, set apart from the more traditional neoclassical, American Colonial, Tudor, and Spanish Colonial–style mansions dotting the nearby hillsides
