CAROLINE’S DÓTERRA ESSENTIAL OILS WELCOME TO OUR WEEKLY COLUMN I am a dóTerra Wellness Advocate and I started my journey with dóTerra essential oils a couple of months ago. Since then, these powerful essential oils have changed my mindset, my mood and has had an uplifting effect in our family home. The dóTerra essential oils are a natural solution to care for our family’s health needs and improve our Wellbeing. They can help support us in many of the following that we experience from time to time: • Anxiety Issues • Digestive Support • Sleep, Muscle Care • Stress, Allergies • Energy Boost • Skin Support • Immunity and so much more. The oils can be used in three different ways; Topically- massaged on to our skin with or without a carrier oil, Aromatically – placing a few drops into a cold water diffuser and diffusing in our homes, classrooms, offices, salons or places of work and Internally – by adding them to your favourite food and drinks, or simply by taking one drop under the tongue daily. MOTIVATION AND INSPIRATION – JUST WHAT WE NEED! And that is what this week’s essential oil is all about. This clever blend from dóTerra brings us ‘Motivate’ and this blend is for you if you are experiencing stagnancy in your life or have found yourself with little or no inspiration. This beautiful citrus essential oil with mint inspires our senses and allows us to take charge of our life with creativity and purpose. With its uplifting aroma this motivating and inspiring blend supports us with courage and confidence to replace any negative feelings or thoughts that we may harbour and bring us an optimistic view on life with all the possibilities that lie in wait for us. Apply this essential oil to the wrist points, behind the ears, the back of the neck and the bottoms of the feet and mix it with your carrier oil. My top favourite carrier oil is fractionated coconut oil. Diffuse two to three drops in your cold-water diffuser and let the uplifting aroma fill your home or work environment while invoking feelings of motivation and inspiration. Motivate can be a huge help to our younger generation while studying for exams or in times of stress as it helps them to focus, remain calm, have confidence and courage in believing in themselves. I love to apply this oil to my neck scarf and the very corners of my face mask as it provides a grounding and balanced effect on my emotions, and it smells great! Until next week, keep safe, remain positive and have patience as we slowly move forward and get back to some normality and ease into the festive season. Your thought of the week - ‘Everything is hard, before it is easy’

LIVE STREAM THEATRICAL PRODUCTION ACROSS NORTH KERRY & LIMERICK

Theatrical Performance in Various Nursing and Care Home Settings across North Kerry and Limerick on Monday 14th December 2020 at 3pm Listowel based theatre-maker Richard Walsh has developed a play based on the local history of 18th century North Kerry and it will livestream to various nursing and care home settings in North Kerry and Limerick on Monday 14th December. The project is supported by Kerry County Council, Creative Ireland, St. John’s Theatre Listowel and Áras Mhuire Nursing Home Listowel. The adapted theatrical performance will stream the talk show style performance directly to nursing home residents. The project aims to bring the performance to older people and those in supported living and care during the COVID19 lockdown in December 2020. It partners with Kilcara, Lystoll, Riverside, St. Louise, Beechwood, St. Catherine’s, Killeline and Áras Mhuire nursing homes. All HSE and government health guidelines and COVID19 regulations are followed by the theatre company in the delivery of this livestreamed theatre event. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Lixnaw 1752 is a play set in Lyreacrompane and LIxnaw during the 18th Century when the bogs of Lyreacrompane were first being turned into farmland. We follow the story of a family who move from Lixnaw (which at that time was considered one of the finest towns in Ireland or Britain) to Lyrecrompane to claim a small farm for themselves. There they encounter people living a different form of life, similar to life in Ireland before the introduction of capitalism. This project is about the development of farming in Kerry, the creation of ‘butter roads’ to Cork, the Whiteboy movement, Faction Fighting, and the connection between Ireland and the European armies of France, Austria and Spain. To help us tell this story, we are also looking to hear from anyone who has an interest in this history and might have stories or information they might like to share with us. Reviews of previous work by Richard Walsh and James Moran “Against Brian Walsh’s excellent jazz drumming, a nod to the then-fading Occupy movement, they revive a German pension squabble with a hysterical din, discuss the maddening ambiguities around a Syrian massacre or, conversely, deliver deadpan reportage of a US soldier’s killing spree with a frenzy of movement. Through it all Walsh nudges playfully and sincerely at the instability of conviction and certainty. All this happened, more or less.” The Irish Times “If one is occasionally annoyed that there is no coherent narrative that leads anywhere, this appears to be the point – it serves as an attempt to get us to ask why certain topics are news, how news is brought to the media, and whether the most important stories of the day will be relevant in the future. Post-2016, this point feels as relevant as ever.” The Reviews Hub CAST AND CREATIVE TEAM Richard Walsh | Shane Connolly James Moran | Brian Walsh Ruairi Ó Donnabháin - Producer Kevin Michael Reed - Video and Live Stream

NATIONAL POLIO REGISTER – GIVING POLIO SURVIVORS A STRONGER VOICE

Polio survivors in the South West urged to sign up

Most people think of polio as long gone. While thankfully, with every child now vaccinated, this debilitating disease is eradicated in Ireland, however it is thought that around 7,000 people who had polio are still living with the impact of the original illness. Polio Survivors Ireland is urging polio survivors throughout the South West of the country to sign up to the Polio Register, to help find out how many are still here and to create strength in numbers. “We are looking for people who contracted polio as babies or young children, to sign up to our National Polio Register, which is currently rolling out in Kerry, Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary,” says Fran Brennan, CEO, Polio Survivors Ireland. “With more evidence of the need for tailored supports and services for polio survivors, we can advocate and campaign for what is needed now and in the future.” Before it was eradicated in the early 1960s, Polio struck down many people in Ireland. The current pandemic brings back many memories for those who recall the widespread fear and panic of their childhood. During the polio epidemics in the 40s and 50s, parents were urged to avoid crowded places and excessive exercise for their children and swimming pools and libraries were closed in an effort to curb this terrible disease that struck mostly babies and children. Of those who contracted the disease, many were partially and some completely paralysed for life. Decades after, many survivors are now experiencing new symptoms, known as Late Effects of Polio or Post-Polio Syndrome, which often require medical advice and treatment. The Polio Register was set up by Polio Survivors Ireland, the only support organisation for survivors in Ireland, to help create a clearer picture of the number of people affected. This will help the charity to advise statutory services of the supports needed for survivors. Anyone who had polio, whether they require support now or not, should register to give a stronger voice to all polio survivors in Ireland. Stephen Collins, a polio survivor living in Limerick, believes the Register is essential to help ensure that survivors get the right support. “We’ve already lived through epidemics,” he says. “Thankfully we’ve survived polio but many polio survivors now have to deal with the late effects of it. It’s as though it’s hit again. It’s important for anyone who had polio to know that there’s someone there to help them and that they can always get support or advice if they need it. It’s a great idea to sign the register because even if someone doesn’t feel they need help now, at some point if they do, at least they can turn to Polio Survivors Ireland.” Late Effects of Polio and Post Polio Syndrome can cause previously active survivors to lose mobility and to struggle with daily tasks, fatigue, pain, or to develop an extreme intolerance to cold. To sign up to the register, see www.polio.ie or contact Polio Survivors Ireland on 01 889 8920, email info@ppsg.ie.

MAURA O’CONNELL FOLEY WINS LISTOWEL FOOD FAIR BOOK OF THE YEAR

We are very honoured to award this year’s Listowel Food Fair Food Book of the Year Award to restaurateur and chef Maura O’Connell Foley, for her wonderful and authentic collection of recipes and memories titled My Wild Atlantic Kitchen: Recipes and Recollections. In addition to being an internationally renowned chef, Maura has been a stalwart of Kerry’s food and hospitality sector for many years. Her journey in food and cuisine began in 1961, when she started working in the Purple Heather Tea and Cake Shop, an establishment then run by Maura’s enterprising and talented mother Agnes. With her husband Tom, Maura would go on to establish the Lime Tree Restaurant and Packie’s Food & Wine, restaurants that have greatly contributed to both Kenmare and Kerry’s reputation as centres of food excellence. 2020 has been a difficult year for the culinary, arts and hospitality sectors, but we at Listowel Food Fair have endevoured to be as active as possible. In addition to the awarding of the Food Book of the Year, we have also continued with our educational programme, including a webinar on the importance of fish in young people’s diet, organised in conjunction with BIM and the Education Centre in Tralee with over 50 schools participating. The Book of The Year Award was initiated back in 2008 and some of the best known names in the Irish culinary industry have been recipients of it. The quality of the writing, the creativity and accessibility of the recipes, the overall design of the book and photography, and the general presentation, are all taken into consideration by the judges when adjudicating. Jimmy Deenihan, Chairperson of Listowel Food Fair, writing on this year’s winner, remarked: ‘Despite strong competition this year from books published by a number of well known culinary personalities, the judges were unanimous in their choice for the Food Book of the Year Award. My Wild Atlantic Kitchen- is not only a description of delicious recipes created by Maura over the past sixty years in her restaurants in Kenmare, it also provides us with an insight into her extraordinary life story, especially her love affair with food. Maura is an institution in the Irish culinary world and has a legendary status in her hometown of Kenmare. Her restaurants The Purple Heather, The Lime Tree and Packie’s Food and Wine earned her both a national and international reputation, a legacy which continues to this day.The judges were very impressed with how the book amalgamated food writing with art, design and photography; with the artistic contributions from Christine Bowen and Pauline Bewick enhancing the book further. The interconnections between literature, art and food is a theme that the Food Fair committee has promoted over the years and this excellent production epitomises all three.’ After receiving the news she won the award, Maura remarked: I’m delighted and honoured to have won this important award by the Listowel Food Fair which over the years has recognised many wonderful chefs and food producers… I was fortunate to work with Eamonn O’Sullivan of Anchor Studio (son of the great Kerry footballer Mickey Ned O’Sullivan) to create not only a cookbook of over 250 of my favourite recipes but also to weave in my love of local art, the beautiful Kerry landscape and the many stories of my life in food. Eamonn has marvellous creativity and also drew upon other talented Kerry based individuals including graphic designer Natalie Moriarty, artist Christine Bowen, photographers Lynda Kenny of Visual Feasts and Landscape photographer Norman McCloskey. I was also delighted that my friend and wonderfully talented artist Pauline Bewick provided artworks as part of her private collection for my book. What was initially a family project gradually turned into a large hardback production of 408 pages! It is a celebration of Kerry & Beara, led by food and enhanced by all these wonderfully talented people and producers. We have found more recently, due to travel restrictions, and the festive period coming upon us that people are buying the book as a gift for family and I hope it provides some comfort as a connection to home during these difficult times. We are all very much looking forward to more human interaction and I have to say I look forward to next year’s Listowel Food Fair. Writing on My Atlantic Kitchen, Derry Clarke, head-chef in Dublin’s michelin-starred L’Ecrivain, remarked: This is a book I feel every cook should have in their kitchen, as they are so many brilliant and varied recipes. While renowned Irish chef Nevin Maguire was even more fulsome and personal in his praise, remarking: Maura Foley has always been an inspiration to me in my career. Her love of food and support of local seasonal produce was unique and ahead of its time. Pictured: Maura O’Connell Foley receiving her award from Jimmy Deenihan. Photo By jkphotography

They are also offering custom made hampers for the Corporate market, which are tax efficient and can be delivered free of charge. So, if you want to shop local and give a hamper with a difference this year, give the girls at Expose a buzz.

Sixth Class from Tarbert National School finalise their letters for posting this week as part of the An Post ‘Sending love to local care homes’ initiative

SAN RITA WELLNESS

Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column… 12 Days of Christmas .....la la la la ♫♫♫♫

On average a person can consume 6,000 calories on Christmas day alone. You may wonder how is that possible? But when you think about it all that festive food and drink do add up, and that is only 1 day. Traditionally there are 12 days of Christmas and if you were to eat like that every day of Christmas it would have an impact on your weight and well being. So maybe this year you can put a different tune to the Christmas carol . My true love gave to me on ........ Day 1

Partridge in a PEAR tree - Keep up the habit of eating fruit as this can help to keep you away from the box of sweets.

Day 2 Two turtle DOVES - Doves represent peace. Are you starting to have a little piece of this and a little piece of that. Remember it all adds up to that little pound of fat. Day 3 Three Christmas WISHES - Three options. Lose, Maintain or Gain weight over the festive season. The choice is always yours, keep this in mind. Day 4 Four CALLING birds - Callings to houses or having friends or family over may all have an impact on our commitment Day 5 FIVE golden rings -Write down 5 things that you are grateful for this Christmas Day 6 Six GEESE a laying - Goose fat is high in calories, choose a lower alternative when cooking Day 7 Seven swans a SWIMMING - Keep active over Christmas by doing whatever you enjoy. While it may not be a swim this year, it could be a walk on the beach or a stroll around the town looking at the lights. Day 8 Eight maids a MILKING - Milk chocolate comes to mind. Have a strategy. Quality over Quantity is sometimes better and often more enjoyable.

Duagh NS supporting Limerick in this Sunday’s All Ireland Final

Day 9. Nine ladies DANCING - An enjoyable way of working off those excess calories even if it is in your sitting room. Day 10 Ten lords a LEAPING - Are you leaping for joy? Replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts. We have had enough negativity all year. Day 11 Eleven pipers PIPING - Christmas music being piped through the supermarkets & our homes can influence our choices. This can have an impact on how we react. Day 12 Twelve drummers DRUMMING - Keep to the beat and things will be sweet. Since 2015, our volunteers have worked to light up every part of Bally and each year we have grown bigger and better. Adults and children alike can feel the magic of Christmas as they stroll through our village and take in the beauty of our magnificent light displays. One of the ways we fundraise for these lights is by placing donation boxes in the shop and pubs, but alas this year with the closure of pubs and contactless payment we have not been able to raise the vital funds we need to carry out our work in future. Therefore, we are appealing to everybody to Please help us to “Light Up Bally” for 2020 and beyond. All donations big and small are very much appreciated. Thank you so much for your help and Merry Christmas and all the best for 2021 from all in Ballylongford.”May you never be too grown up to search the skies on Christmas Eve” COMPETITION TIME: Since our foundation in 2015, Great National Hotels have been by our side supporting us. TINTEAN THEATRE Indeed there was wonderful News on the announcement last week particularly for Ballybunion and indeed all North Kerry area on learning that the 550 Seat Tintean Theatre in Ballybunion has avoided permanent closure. The good news comes as a new local company has taken over the theatre, its assets and its debts. With the further good news that it will re-open as soon as all Covid 19 restrictions are lifted. The theatre which cost over €4 million to build, opened in 2005, but has not been in use and has been closed for over two years, since a public meeting was held there in November of 2018 to try and get a buyer or a group to take over the theatre. God knows there has been more than enough businesses and buildings left derelict all over North Kerry in recent years besides adding more wonderful amenities. Best Wishes to the new Company at the helm and hopefully everything will be a success going forward. BALLYBUNION COMMUNITY FORUM FUNDING APPEAL Ballybunion Community Forum has organised a fundraising appeal to enable the Forum financially survive into the year 2021. For the past four years Ballybunion Community Forum has worked tirelessly to promote and market Ballybunion town in whatever way possible.

BEALE GAA GEAR Beale GAA gear is now available online through O’Neill’s. They offer a fabulous range of products many of which can also be personalized to shop online, simply click on the Shop Now button on Beale GAA Facebook page or log on to www. oneills.com/shop-by-team/gaa/ireland/ beale-gaa-club

One of their bigger costs is the running of the tourist office which is indispensable to the town. This year we once again are involved in the costly burden of providing the town’s Christmas lights. The Ballybunion Community Forum has also been involved with Fáilte Ireland and Kerry County Council for the past number of months in the rollout of the DEDP (Destination Experience Development Programme). This programme will focus on the Cliff Coast Area of West Clare and North Kerry and will happen over the next few years.

POSITIONS AVAILABLE IN COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT We currently have a few vacancies available in the Ballybunion Community Employment Scheme. If you are interested in these jobs please contact Patsy on 068 27799 or email saothairnanabhann@gmail.com. This is a development opportunity, no experience necessary. Accredited training will be provided to support your career

Ballybunion has also been chosen for a Place marque initiative involving the upgrading of all signage on the approaches to and around the town. These initiatives will present wonderful opportunities to the businesses and tourism providers in this area. If we are to get the best value and representation out of these initiatives it is imperative that we rally together and everyone to do their part in supporting in any way the progress and survival of the Forum. All in all, we project that we are faced with a commitment of €25k/€30k to meet the basic operational costs of running these basic projects. This is to prevent further decline in our town, ensure the survival of the Community Forum for the next 12 months, getting us to a better place post the virus and to a much brighter future. Up to now we have been financially supported by many businesses in the town. For that we are genuinely grateful. However, due to the Covid 19 pandemic many of these businesses are now closed and no longer in a position to provide the financial support we need. We are no different from many other groups in that fund raising is a non-runner. We would appreciate any donation from home or from our diaspora abroad, no matter how big or how small. For that, we’d be eternally grateful. The go fund me page can be found under the following link Fundraiser by Ballybunion Community Forum : Ballybunion Community Forum Funding Appeal (gofundme.com) BREAST CANCER CHALLENGE For the month of November members of Ballybunion Leisure Centre had been doing a squat challenge for Breast cancer with all money raised going straight to the Mater Foundation. MARY’S, KILFLYNN Mass celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, Kilflynn Saturday 12th December at 6.00 p.m. Aoife Noelle Parker, Kilflynn Not being able to do what we always did. Have you found yourself, like me, about to go into a shop and realising that you forgot to put on your mask! How have you felt, when somebody said to you, ‘You are not wearing a mask.’ Most of us, adults, don’t like to be told what to do and, yet, that is something we have been trying to get accustomed to in recent months. With regard to attendance at weekend Mass, I thank God that a good number of people have been faithful to that commitment over the years, in good and bad times. Therefore, it is hard to be asked to consider attending a weekday Mass, instead of the Saturday Vigil/ Sunday morning Mass, once in a while, so as to give a chance to others. It is for that reason, that you are being asked to understand that you may not be able to attend your weekend Mass as regularly as you did before the corona virus came our way. (Fr. Denis O’Mahony) Christmas Masses: The diocese will be issuing guidelines regarding the Christmas Masses at the end of next week and booking will be taken from 15th December. MEANING OF LIFE There was a time in my life when I had no concept of Jesus existing prior to His birth as a baby in the stable in Bethlehem. It never occurred to me that He had a life in Heaven before He came to earth. However Scripture, which is God breathed, clearly reveals that the Holy Trinity,God the Father,God the Son and God the Holy Spirit lived in perfect love and unity in Heaven before our world began. The Gospel of John begins with the amazing words “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” The Word here is Jesus. And again John 10:30 tells us ”I (Jesus) and the Father are one.” So the question now is why did God send His Son Jesus, with whom He lived in perfect love and unity, in splendour, in everlasting glory and beauty for all eternity in Heaven to this planet earth that is riddled with destruction, disease, deceit, depravity and death? Why? In the Gospel of John 3:17 we read “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world but that the world might be saved.”Again in St.Paul’s epistle to Timothy 1:15 we read “Christ came into the world to save sinners.”

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours.

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours.

This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Amen.

OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL

St. Expidite, you lay in rest. I come to you ask that this wish be granted

Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God; Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity (Mention your request here) There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Amen This prayer is never known to fail. It is to be said for 3 consecutive days. Publication on granting of the favour must be promised and done. F.B.

(Mention your urgest request) Saint Expedite now that I ask you. Saint Expedite now what I want of you, this very second. Don’t waste another day. Grant me what I ask for. I know your power, I know you because of your work. I know you can help me. Do this for me and I will spread your name with love and honour so that it will be invoked again and again. Expedite this wish with speed, love, honour and goodness. Glory to you, Saint Expedite. FEAST DAY: 19TH APRIL Continue to say with lit candle until request is granted. Must publish. A.H.

God the Father knew what lay ahead for His beloved Son, right from His birth in a stable to His brutal death on a Roman cross. Yet God allowed it, because He thinks you and l are worth saving. In this season of Christmas there is NO gift that can even remotely come near the incredibly astonishingly amazing gift we have received from God our Heavenly Father in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ. Have a blessed and safe Christmas season with your families. If you require any further information you can call LCF at 087 9529907 Yours sincerely Bridie (Dillon)Hartney
