Marin Athletic Foundation Providing Financial Support For Interscholastic and Intramural Sports The purpose of the Marin Athletic Foundation is to save and maintain high school sports programs in Marin County through community fundraising. The Board of Directors of the Marin Athletic Foundation believes that:

ool lete

-

High school sports are a vital part of the high school experience and provide important and positive educational and developmental outcomes for students.

-

School districts need community support to keep athletic programs from being eliminated. Declining enrollment and state financial support often make it necessary for school boards to cut back in almost all school programs.

-

To insure broad participation by all students both interscholastic and intramural programs should remain available.

-

An aware community will make a commitment to provide the resources necessary to help the schools keep these programs in place. Selection Criteria

The student athletes being honored were selected by their schools in accordance with the following criteria, developed with the involvement of school athletic directors and adopted by the Board of Directors of the Marin Athletic Foundation: Athletic Involvement Leadership Scholarship School-Community Involvement Deportment These elements embody values that the Marin Athletic Foundation believes are vital in a comprehensive education for all young citizens.

Branson Zack Miller

ctors

For many high school students, summer is still a time of unbridled freedom. For Zack Miller, the summer of 2002 meant unbridled freedom — for about a week and a half. The rest of his time was spent honing his game at America Junior Golf Association tournaments across the country. Miller has been the only winner in the two-year history of the Marin County Athletic League championships, thus becoming a twotime league MVP. Miller earned Polo Junior All-American honors and represented the United States in the World Junior Golf Cup in Scotland. Miller is a senior mentor to freshmen and a member of the chamber singers. He works with Special Olympics and Guide Dogs for the Blind. Miller will play golf on a scholarship at Stanford.

Emily Guerry

It’s a good thing Emily Guerry has been the social representative of her class three times over — she’s had plenty to celebrate as a Bull. Guerry went from being Branson’s Most Improved volleyball player to the Player of the Year in the Marin County Athletic League as a senior. In between, the middle hitter was twice named All-MCAL first team, twice won the Bulls’ MVP award and appeared on Volleyball Magazine’s “Hot 100 Recruits” list. In softball, Guerry pitched her way to a pair of first-team All-MCAL showings. She was also a member of the student Senate, a soup kitchen volunteer, a Special Olympics coach and an instructor to young pitchers. Guerry has earned a full volleyball scholarship at North Carolina.

Drake Alex Pribble

D

As a writer and editor of the sports section in this year’s Drake yearbook, critics could claim a conflict of interest for Alex Pribble. But whatever glowing headlines get written, he’s earned them. A three-sport athlete — soccer, basketball and baseball — Pribble starred in the first two disciplines. He was a two-year captain of the Pirates’ soccer squad and earned first-team AllMarin County Athletic League recognition last fall. Pribble was a three-time captain of the basketball team, including this winter, when he led Drake to a regular-season pennant and took home the MCAL Player of the Year honors. Pribble, who coached basketball to Special Olympians, plans to major in political science at Cal, where he was recruited as a basketball walk-on.

In the world of Drake girls sports, only Merrill Stubing of “Love Boat” fame owned more captain’s hats than Allison Peairs. A four-year varsity player in water polo and basketball, Peairs was a captain of both teams as a junior and a senior. In the pool, Peairs went four-forfour on acquiring All-Marin County Athletic League honors; she was named to the second team as a freshman, honorable mention as a sophomore and first team as a junior and senior. Last fall, she also earned a spot on the All-North Coast Section second team. Peairs’ non-sports activities included Drake Students for Social Justice, the dance troupe, and the yearbook. Peairs will attend UC Santa Barbara and is planning on majoring in global studies.

Along with a diploma, the folks at Marin Catholic ought to give David D’Ambrosio a copy of the school’s football record book, since he’s authored so many of the entries. A threeyear starter at quarterback and team captain, D’Ambrosio holds 14 Wildcat passing marks. He took home the team’s Most Valuable Player award as a senior and won All-Marin County Athletic League acclaim as a junior (second team) and senior (honorable mention). D’Ambrosio also played on the varsity basketball and baseball teams, helping the former to the North Coast Section Division IV crown as a junior. D’Ambrosio served on the student council, was a member of the NHS and CSF, and volunteered with the Seeds of Learning school-building project in El Salvador.

After a hip injury forced Nicci Fish to miss the cross country postseason in 2001, she made sure to get her money’s worth as a senior. Fish stormed through the 2002 championship meets, starting with the Marin County Athletic League event, where she took the title with a record-shattering time — more than a minute faster than the previous mark on the Indian Valley Campus course. She next captured the North Coast Section crown, and finally finished fourth among Division IV runners at the California Interscholastic Federation state meet in Fresno. Between races, Fish belongs to the student council, NHS, CSF, the Environmental Club and Youth and Government. A four-year volunteer for Seeds of Learning with a 4.1 GPA, Fish will run indoor track, outdoor track and cross country for Columbia.

Novato Tim Morgan

Over the past four seasons, the Novato boys basketball team hasn’t had the success it would have liked, but it has had one constant: Tim Morgan. A four-year starter at the varsity level, Morgan ranks sixth on the Hornets’ alltime scoring list and was second in the league in scoring as a senior, with an 18.4 points-pergame average. That earned him second-team All-Marin County Athletic League honors, to go along with the All-MCAL double he pulled in football last fall, when he was second team on both offense and defense. Morgan is currently the student body vice president and is participating in this spring’s school play, “Guys and Dolls.” He plans to attend Colorado and pursue a career in coaching.

Shannon Buada

With a reputation as “Miss School Spirit,” Buada probably would have made a good cheerleader. Except she was too busy leading teams on Novato’s fields and courts instead. As a member of three Hornet squads — basketball, soccer and lacrosse — Buada received a North Coast Section Scholar Athlete award for every season; that’s not surprising, given her GPA of 4.33. Buada was captain of Novato’s basketball squad as a senior, earning a berth in the Marin All-Star contest. Outside of sports, Buada was a member of the Environmental and Prom clubs, was class vice president as a freshman and commissioner of — naturally — spirit and rallies as a junior. She volunteers as a counselor at CYO Camp Armstrong and plans to study communications at UC Davis.

Adam Wihlborg served as a commissioner in the Breakfast of Champions program, which seems only fitting, given his resume. A captain and four-year member of both the swimming and water polo teams, Wihlborg has won the Most Inspirational award in the former and the Most Improved award in the latter. He has been honored as a North Coast Section Scholar Athlete in both sports, is a perennial member of CSF and the Redwood Honors Society and is a three-time recipient of the Governor’s Scholar award. Wihlborg was also involved in leadership class, Link Crew, the Students Against Violence club, Redwood’s blood drive and Meals of Marin. He was also a Homecoming Prince, student body vice president and recorded a GPA of 4.14.

A pun-maker might say Charlotte Helvestine “ran away” with this award. Bad word jokes aside, Helvestine was at the head of the pack as a three-year varsity runner on both the cross country and track teams. As a senior, she captained both squads. Additionally, she won the Most Improved Runner, Outstanding Runner and the Coaches’ Award (twice) and placed fifth in the Marin County Athletic League cross country championships as a junior. Helvestine was a member of the Students Against Violence Club, the Redwood Honors Society and Link Crew. Off campus, she volunteered as a peer facilitator for Marin Abused Women’s Services and was a member of her church youth group. She will be taking her 4.3 GPA to Stanford this fall.

San Marin Bret Pughe

A

In the world of sports, attaining perfection for one moment or one day is hard enough. To do it over four years is simply absurd. Yet year after year, there was Bret Pughe, taking on all comers from the Marin County Athletic League and emerging unbeaten. In the process, Pughe became just the fourth wrestler — and the first from San Marin — to win four MCAL titles in his career. This year, Pughe won the Ralph Cutler Award as the best performer at the MCAL championships. In addition, he was a two-time All-MCAL secondteam player in water polo. Pughe worked with the Link Crew, was a part of the Every Fifteen Minutes program and was a rally commissioner. He will attend UC Santa Barbara and join the school’s club wrestling program.

Apparently, Jenna Newberry doesn’t need much rest. After three years as a three-sport varsity player at San Marin, Newberry is planning on being a part of the basketball and soccer teams beginning this fall at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Newberry’s best sport as a Mustang was basketball; she picked up All-Marin County Athletic League honors as a junior (honorable mention) and senior (second team) and was team captain and Most Valuable Player this year. Newberry also nabbed the volleyball Most Improved Player award as a junior. Newberry served as a junior class representative, as senior class treasurer and also was a Link Crew member her last two years. Additionally, she was involved in the Second Chance Rescue program, volunteered in elementary schools and in coaching youth soccer.

He took home the Prefontaine Award, the Most Improved Award and North Coast Section Scholar Athlete honors, but the one thing Alex Roedel probably cherishes the most is his bib from the 2002 California Interscholastic Federation State Cross Country Championships. When Roedel finally made it to Fresno last fall after a best-ever fourthplace finish at the North Coast Section championships, it capped a four-year quest that included first-team All-Marin County Athletic League honors as a junior and senior. Last spring, Roedel took home a MCAL title as part of San Rafael’s winning 1,600-meter relay team. A perpetual member of the CSF and club president with a 3.98 GPA, Roedel is heading to UC Santa Barbara, where he plans to eventually run track and cross country.

There’s a repetitiveness in the athletic resume of Kristin Doving, but in a good way. As a sophomore on the volleyball team, she earned All-Marin County Athletic League honors (second team), took home a North Coast Section Scholar Athlete award and was proclaimed the team’s Most Valuable Player. As a junior, it was All-MCAL (first team this time), NCS Scholar Athlete, team MVP. As a senior? First-team all-league, another NCS certificate and a third MVP title; to spice things up, she added team captain. In softball, Doving was All-MCAL as a sophomore and is a captain of this year’s squad. She is involved in the student Senate, CSF and her church youth group. Doving will attend UC San Diego and try out for the volleyball squad.

His time as a Red-tailed Hawk may run its course in a month or so, but with his 4.26 GPA, Jason Levy will always have his lifetime membership in the California Scholarship Federation — and his pair of Marin County Athletic League titles won as part of Tam’s boys tennis team. Levy won the Red-tailed Hawks’ Most Improved Player award as a sophomore, was team captain as a senior and has received recognition as a North Coast Section Scholar Athlete. Levy has belonged to the Debate Club and the Honor T Society. He volunteers at the La Raza Community Education Center and earned a Good Citizen award from the Daughters of the American Revolution. After competing in three sports with the Red-tailed Hawks — volleyball, basketball and track and field — Kirsten Hextrum’s college years will be spent competing in a fourth discipline; she’s going to Cal in the fall, and the Golden Bears women’s rowing program has convinced Hextrum to join up. During her senior year at Tam, Hextrum was named Most Valuable Player of the volleyball team and Most Inspirational on the basketball squad. Hextrum has been a three-time North Coast Section Scholar Athlete and worked all four years on the school’s award-winning paper, the Tamalpais News; she’s currently Editor in Chief. Hextrum, who has a 4.0 GPA, is also a volunteer tutor in San Francisco, teaching Hispanic immigrants who are trying to pass the United States citizenship test.

Andrew Harley is planning on studying business or criminal justice in college. Bad guys better hope he chooses the former, because this is one guy they don’t want to wrestle with. Harley was a three-time Marin County Athletic League wrestling champion at 215 pounds, and with his third-place performance at the North Coast Section meet in February, earned a coveted berth at the state championships. After being named a second-team All-MCAL offensive lineman as a junior, Harley broke out last fall, netting first-team awards on the offensive and defensive lines and the MCAL Lineman of the Year prize. An avid musician, Harley has volunteered with the Book Bank of America. He will attend Pitzer College and play football with his older brother, Mark, on the Pomona-Pitzer squad.

For four years, Loberg has been the anchor of Terra Linda water polo, figuratively and literally, collecting a quartet of All-Marin County Athletic League honors — second team as a freshman, first team the other three years — and a Player of the Year award as a junior. She also took home two team MVP awards in swimming. Loberg will attend UC Davis in the fall and is planning on playing water polo there.

Three-sport stars aren’t unusual on this list, but Alex Patterson’s combination of disciplines is: Football, baseball and ... politics. In addition to being a team captain on both the football and baseball teams, Patterson has served in some capacity in student government during each of his four years at Tomales. Said Braves athletic director Mike Marweg: “Alex took full advantage of his high school experience.” Patterson was a two-year starter in football and baseball, helping the former squad to a pair of North Coast Section Class B titles and the latter to its first North Central League II title in a decade. Patterson was also a four-year member of the Friday Night Live program. He will attend the University of Puget Sound with plans to play football.

Kimberly Ventresca Kimberly Ventresca is one Governor’s Scholar from whom Gray Davis might want to get some pointers. Ventresca will leave Tomales as a three-term class president, having held the post as a sophomore, junior and senior. Her numbers in All-North Central League voting have been equally impressive — being honored five times, with a sixth (and fourth in softball) a strong possibility this spring. Ventresca has been named MVP of the volleyball and basketball teams, and also won both Best Offense and Best Defense award from the softball and volleyball squads. In addition, she’s worked on the watershed restoration project, the school blood drive and as an elementary schoolteacher’s aide. Ventresca will be attending Indiana and is planning on majoring in Middle Eastern studies.
