RANVAS

Naguar, North of Jodhpur, India The former residence of the Ranis of Maharaja Bakht Singh of Jodhpur has been turned into a hotel of palatial luxury in Rajasthan. The 308

Ranvas is a unique heritage property, a place of palaces, gardens and havelis (the abode of the queens). It is a truly regal accommodation, the astounding result of a 20-year renovation based on the dedicated vision of Maharaja Gaj Singh II of Marwar-Jodhpur. It has taken a team of international experts, hundreds of local stonemasons, artisans and gardeners, and grants from the Mehrangarh Museum Trust, the Getty Foundation and the Helen Hamlyn Trust to restore the property to its former glory. Their efforts resulted in the fort being awarded the Unesco AsiaPacific Award of Excellence for Culture Heritage Conservation in 2004. The Ranvas lies within the ramparts of the mighty Ahhichatragarh Fort (or Nagaur Fort), one of the finest examples of Rajput-Mughal architecture. It comprises 10 havelis, which in the 18th century acted as residences for each of Maharaja Bhagat Singh's 10 Ranis or wifes. Guests may enjoy a stay in one of the former residences of the queens, with each haveli featuring three or four bedrooms. The Deluxe King Rooms have private courtyards. The outside living area is decorated with artisanal furnishings from the region. The rooms are all within the fort itself, providing a feeling of being part of the history and pomp of a bygone era. After sunset during special events and festivals, the property is illuminated with hundreds of clay diya candles.
