THE PALOMA Little is known about the historical origin of the Paloma, but some guess that it is named after La Paloma (“The Dove”), a popular folk song composed in the early 1860s. A great alternative to the Margarita and a favorite in Mexico, the Paloma is a tequila-based cocktail made with other fresh ingredients to be one of the smoothest drinks to ever come from our neighbors to the south. Using Reposado – especially Exotico Reposado – adds a nice smoky layer of flavor from the nine months of barrel aging.
MAKE IT Glass: Highball Ingredients: 2 oz. Exotico Reposado tequila 2 oz. fresh grapefruit juice ½ oz. fresh lime juice 1 teaspoon sugar 2 oz. club soda or grapefruit soda Kosher salt 1 grapefruit wedge Recipe: Pour kosher salt on a plate. Rub half of rim of a highball glass with grapefruit wedge; dip rim of glass in salt. Combine grapefruit juice, lime juice and sugar in glass; stir until sugar is dissolved. Stir in Exotico Reposado, add ice and top off with soda. Garnish: Grapefruit wedge

A lot of changes have come to Club St. Louis over the past year or so, changes for the better and for the future. In the words of owner Kevin Little, they’ve gone “30 years in just one year.” Fresh paint and carpeting are noticeable, new furniture fills the updated lounge area and modern workout equipment makes the gym fully equipped for a well-balanced workout. TVs are now in every room, they’ve added new dressing rooms and have completely re-done the patio area, including a new fence around the pool. They’ve even added in new generators to the steam room, making it one of the best functioning saunas in St. Louis. Going 30 years in one year is no easy task, but it was the goal and vision of the owners to create such a world-class space. The results speak for themselves, and Vital VOICE sat down with manager Kevin Little and his assistant, Matt Plume, to talk about the details of the outcome. “We hired an architect to re-do the interior, and worked with our owner Aaron and the project manager to really nail out the details,” Kevin says. “We had someone come in and pick things out, but we tweaked it to our tastes.” Club St. Louis is more than a gym, it’s a place to socialize and meet other guys. “Obviously, we are sex positive, so we are not going to judge based on looks or things like that,” Matt says. “It’s a place where everyone can come and just relax, and take advantage of our amenities – a non-drinking alternative. Just a place to get comfortable, relax and have a good time.” The Club does various events throughout the month. “We do movie nights every Wednesday in our new multi-purpose room,” Kevin explains. “It’s really cool because we have a 60-inch flat screen TV, we turn out the lights and turn up the sound. We have a variety of films, but it’s usually comedy. We also show LGBT and other mainstream movies.” The Club also does “Lights Out” parties on the last Thursday of each month, a more “let your hair down,” “feel good” type of event. On Sundays, they do buffets, usually catered by Lee’s. In addition to just events, The Club does free HIV and STD testing through the city of St. Louis- you don’t even have to be a member to come in for it. “We have partnerships with St. Louis Effort For AIDS for testing twice a month,” Kevin explains. “We’ve also done a lot of charity work over the last year. We’ve collected money for EFA, did a Toys For Tots drive, and we’re planning to get a food drive together for Food Outreach.”
CLUB ST. LOUIS Change for the better seems to be paying off for The Club, and the feedback in the last year has proven that whatever they’re doing is working. “The numbers have been up – way up,” Kevin says. “It’s been very positive. Of course, some people don’t like change, but this change has been amazing. And the new multi-purpose room – that’s been the biggest feature that everyone has appreciated.” Still not sold? Well, we all may have heard stories, and some of us may be skeptical at first, but it’s really what you make of it, and it really depends on the person. “My first time here, I was nervous and scared because yes, I had heard stories,” Matt says. “But I was curious to know what went on here, so I brought a friend. We ended up having a blast.” A one-time visit is only $10, just in case you want a sneak peak before committing. After that, a monthly membership is $20. If you’re age 18-24, your guest pass is always free with a room or locker rental. Focusing on the younger generation is key for Kevin and his staff, even offering College Nights on Tuesdays, where locker rentals are only $10. For those that may have those “stories” still stuck in their heads, throw those out the window. The Club sticks to its motto, “Good.Clean. Fun.” “The facility is actually cleaner than most hospitals,” Matt notes. “We promote a safe and clean environment. In comparison, we’ve had members say that it’s much cleaner than Flex, or SteamWorks in Chicago.” Being part of a gym like Club St. Louis is more than just a move for yourself, you are joining a community. “The atmosphere at The Club is much different that at the bar. You are able to actually meet some great guys, someone that you may actually jive with,” Matt explains. “We are competing with the apps like Scruff and Grindr. But the thing is, when you are here, you actually get to see the person that you are going to connect with.” The Club is open 24/7. “There will always be a light on for you,” Kevin laughs. If you’re taking TRIUMEQ and interferon, with or without ribavirin, tell your healthcare provider about any new symptoms. Worsening of liver disease that has caused death has happened in people infected with both HIV-1 and hepatitis C who were taking antiretroviral medicines and interferon. Who should not take TRIUMEQ? • Do not take TRIUMEQ if you: have the HLA-B*5701 gene variation are allergic to abacavir, dolutegravir, or any of the ingredients in TRIUMEQ take dofetilide (Tikosyn®) have liver problems What are other possible side effects of TRIUMEQ? • People with a history of hepatitis B or C virus may have an increased risk of developing new or worsening changes in certain liver tests during treatment with TRIUMEQ. OUT WITH THE GAMES At the end of March, STL Equality Games, LLC announced that the 2016 North America OutGames that were slated to take place in St. Louis from May 28 – June 4 would no longer be happening. Similar to the Olympics, the OutGames is a festival of sports, human rights and cultural events hosted by the LGBT community. In an official press release, OutGames organizer and President of Team St. Louis Alice Tejada commented on the cancellation: “It’s a disappointment when an event as exciting as the OutGames has to be shelved. St. Louis has a long-standing commitment to a healthy LGBTQ community, and our organization will continue to advocate for health, inclusion and athletics in the region.” The games expected to bring in more than three thousand people to the city and would have taken place throughout the St. Louis area. Union Station would have acted as Athlete’s Village, similar to the Olympic Village. According to Todd Ackerman, Managing Partner of STL Equality Games, LLC, a lack of funding and low registration numbers is the official reason as to why the event was canceled. “When we originally began planning three to four years ago, we had received some commitments at the time from various entities that would help us show what we could do in terms of basically putting on these games,” he explains.
“And based on budgeting and what the city sent us, which was amazing, they basically provided us free venues for three quarters of our sports. We felt like we could put out a really good product and really showcase the city of St. Louis. As time got closer, we began to encounter some hurdles. Not enough people across the country were hearing about the event. Then it came to the conclusion that we absolutely could not do it. We needed $150-200 thousand in donations and above average registration numbers, and we weren’t even close to that.” OutGames is part of the Gay and Lesbian International Sport Association (GLISA) and it is currently accepting bids for the next OutGames, which will take place in 2020. Even though St. Louis lost its chance to host the OutGames, Ackerman believes it should be considered in the future. “I think the city in itself is phenomenal,” he says. “The CVC and the city were amazing to work with and, like I said, the city donated a large portion of venues for us. Hotels were great at helping and supporting us, and Southwest Airlines
was great by offering discounts. St. Louis is a good place for the OutGames, but there just has to be a really strong effort to make it work.” Just like any other major event, a host city will find a significant increase in finances and culture. In addition, St. Louis was chosen as the first U.S. site to host the OutGames because it was an accessible city and friendly to the LGBT community. “Through economic strides, we estimated that this event would have probably brought in $5-10 million in terms of hotel and restaurant revenue,” Ackerman says. “There could have possibly been more. Culturally, the OutGames would have been an opportunity to show off St. Louis as being an inclusive and inexpensive place to visit. I think, given the events of Ferguson and some really unfavorable legislation that is being proposed in the state of Missouri and elsewhere, this could have been an opportunity to show that St. Louis is able to put all that negativity aside.” V Text DENNY PATTERSON

It’s never too late to start something new. At Stevens - The Institute of Business & Arts (SIBA), it’s easy to start, start again, or even completely start over to finally get on the career path you’ve always wanted. Kyle and Eric are proof of this. Both attended SIBA, majoring in interior design and business administration, respectively, and are now successfully working in their career fields. They married in 2009 and, with a few anniversaries under their belt, Kyle decided to go back to school with Eric’s support and encouragement. Kyle heard about SIBA through a friend’s recommendation and immediately fell in love with the campus. “I already had some architecture classes from a previous school, so the transition to interior design made sense for me,” Kyle says. “I really liked the environment, and the location was ideal.” “Plus, Kyle was student board president of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) and got to get in front of designers right away, even before he graduated,” Eric notes. Students have the ability to get involved in clubs and organizations, participate in networking events, find internships and gain professional exposure in their careers. Located downtown on Washington Avenue, SIBA centrally stands among other urban businesses and outlets, giving students inspiration and opportunities to learn in a creative and vibrant community. High ceilings, exposed brick and beams, and modern art are just a few of the things that make the atmosphere stand out from your “typical” college. “The instructors really know you here,” Kyle says. “They know where your strengths are and they personally reach out to you if they find or hear about a job or opportunity they think you’re a good fit for.” After Eric saw how much Kyle was enjoying his classes, he decided to attend SIBA as well. “SIBA was the first time where I enjoyed school,” he says. “I walked in to it saying that I will graduate and graduate at the top of my class – and I did. It was
the first time I wanted to do well and I was at a time in my life where I had the motivation and support to do it.” The year is divided into four quarters, and students have the ability to pick as many or as few classes as they want based on their schedule, catering to both working professionals and fulltime learners. Eric, who was ambitious and dedicated to finish quickly, received his bachelor’s degree in just 3 years. “For anyone who says ‘I’m too old’ or ‘I don’t have time,’ all I have to say is, if you really want it bad enough, you can do it,” Eric says. “You can’t make any excuses. People do it part-time at their leisure or overload like I did. It’s tough but they definitely make the program flexible.” SIBA offers bachelor and associate’s degrees in interior design, paralegal studies, business administration and retail management/fashion merchandising. It also offers an associate’s degree in tourism and hospitality management. Both Kyle and Eric found invaluable lessons in the classroom – learning about programs and software in their field, how to work faster and more proficiently, and about their industry overall. While at SIBA, they actually ended up having one class together, which they say taught them a lot about each other and their work habits. Possibly a precursor to their future, Kyle and Eric hope to open their own design firm one day – with Eric on the business side and Kyle on the creative side. “We definitely have different styles of doing things,” Eric laughs. “But, we balance each other out,” Kyle says. “It was nice having each other for support.” Their support system extends beyond themselves, too. “It’s LGBT friendly, 100 percent,” Kyle says. “It’s a very welcoming campus. Everyone is like family and is always looking out for each other.” V Powered by:

Even having all that under her belt, Jane shows no signs of slowing down. Most recently, Jane Lynch has been balancing several amazing projects all while touring with her own musical comedy variety show, “See Jane Sing.” She describes the show as “a big love fest.” “I start off each show by saying, ‘Join me in a musical journey through a world of songs that have very little to do with one another,’” Jane explains. “So what it really is is a night of musical comedy fun jam-packed with everything that we love. I think people will be tapping their toes and they won’t know what hit them.” “We’ve got an amazing band called the Tony Guerrero Quintet and they’re masters at what they do,” she continues. “Then it’s myself, Kate Flannery, who played Meredith on The Office, and Tim Davis who was the vocal director on Glee.” And what kinds of songs can we expect to see Jane sing? “It’s ultimately just songs that we love and we hope the audience will love them, too. We’ve got an Irving Berlin song that I love and we’re actually doing a little Nicki 28

Minaj. We do a 70s and 80s pop song medley of songs that made us cry as kids. We do some very tight 50s session singer harmonies. I even do a pop song from the 60s called “Smile a Little Smile for Me” by Flying Machine. But we go all over the place. We sing a 20s ragtime song and there is just absolutely no rhyme or reason to it, but somehow it works.” She goes on to brag on her cast and the humor that comes from it. “It’s mine and Kate’s relationship, which in a nutshell—and you’re probably way too young to know this reference— but it’s very Eve Arden and Kaye Ballard. I’m basically playing the straight man trying to do a wonderful show, trying to keep everything above board and Kate is just silly and a bit of a drunk and completely sexually inappropriate with people.” What we’ve got here is a huge assortment of the cast’s most beloved music, over-the-top “odd couple” comedy routines and the musical direction of an absolute master of his craft. It sounds like a match made in heaven, but how did they come up with such a dynamic show? Well it turns out that it all started about three years ago when Jane starred in the Broadway production of Annie. “It’s when I was doing Annie that 54 Below asked me if I wanted to do four nights with them because I got into the Broadway community and they just kind of assumed that I had a cabaret show, which I did not (laughter). So I scrambled and made one. So, really I’ve been doing this show for about three years. I really haven’t been off stage at all since I’ve done Annie.”
All of that being said, we can’t wait to check out “See Jane Sing” when it comes to The Sheldon in June. However, that’s not the end of what Jane Lynch is currently working on; not by a long shot.
While the show hasn’t been released yet, she is still courting offers right now on Internet platforms. Nonetheless, Jane says that it will be coming to an Internet near you very soon.

Jane is also the host of NBC’s Hollywood Game Night, a show that’s essentially a big, televised game night for both celebrities and contestants. “Basically what we do on the show is we have three celebrities on each couch and one civilian. We set it up like a living room and they play against each other. We make up all the games, all original, fun and crazy. The civilian players get a chance to win $25,000 for themselves and the celebrities get the opportunity to win $10,000 for the charity of their choosing. It’s a terrific thing and it’s a load of fun.” When Jane says the show is a blast, she’s not kidding, and a ton of that fun comes from the involvement of the celebrity guests. “Martin Short is definitely the craziest and I love him,” she laughs. “Mario Lopez is so competitive, Anthony Anderson is an amazing player and kind of a cheater, and Yvette Nicole Brown is awesome. She’s been on three times and she’s been chosen for the final round each time, which she wins every time. She’s the perfect contestant. Melissa Etheridge is on this week. She’s amazing. She’s an amazing game player and what we do when we get somebody like Melissa Etheridge on we tell her to go up and sing with the live band. She performed and we’ve had Kesha and all kinds of other competitors sing for us.” Another new project coming in the works is a fantastic new web series they’re shopping around to networks and streaming platforms. “It’s a daytime soap opera spoof called ‘Dropping the Soap,’” she explains. “It’s about these actors on a soap that’s about to be pulled off the air. These people are holding on for dear life. They’re trying to keep themselves relevant and hopefully keep their show relevant. Of course, there’s as much drama back stage as there is in front of the camera. It’s shot just like a soap opera and then we go back stage and see the shenanigans that are going on there and hilarity ensues. It’s really funny. I haven’t laughed so hard in such a long time.”
“It’s shot and it should be coming out on Netflix this summer,” Jane explains. “Christopher Guest is great at defining subcultures and examining them through his films. In this case, it’s about people who dress as mascots, but not professionally. These are the mascots for the nonprofessional teams: college baseball and football teams and AAA school teams. The movie explores each of these mascots, how they became mascots, how dedicated they are to it and the lengths they go in order to be really good at what they do.” With all of these projects coinciding, it begs the question, how does she keep it up? How does she stay so motivated to work so hard? To answer, Jane quoted one of her own responses to a fan’s tweet. “‘I don’t work. I don’t work hard and I don’t need to be motivated. That’s because I really take life very nice and easy,’” she says. “So I give that advice to you too, and all the readers. Do things that you love and if you find yourself doing something you don’t necessarily enjoy, just find something in your heart to smile about and then continue to look for something you love.” That’s a big heaping helping of wisdom from Jane Lynch. The same wisdom that has made her what she is today will keep driving her to new heights. With that advice, hopefully we will too V.

1 0 6 2 HEAD LINERS TY HERNDON With classic country roots to match his impeccable charm, Ty Herndon has been creating chart toppers for the past two decades. But for much of that time, he was holding back a part of himself.
TONY MORAN Tony Moran is a twotime Grammy nominated remixer, producer, singersongwriter. He is one of the most well known DJs in the house music genre, regularly playing to massive crowds at events throughout the world.
About a year and a half ago, the Grammy-nominated artist came out publicly as gay. His family knew and supported his partnership with his longtime beau – but Herndon wasn’t sure how the public would react. Singing in a notoriously conservative genre, he was prepared to even lose some fans. Fortunately, he was greeted with a wave of support, love and encouragement.
And this year, Moran is also headliner at this year’s KC PrideFest on opening night.
“I really have to give more credit to the fans because all they care about is the music,” Herndon laughs. In a little over a month, you can see Herndon take the stage once again and perform some of his classics like “What Mattered Most,” and even debut some singles from his new album, scheduled for release this June.
So, what can big-time fans expect to hear at Tony’s show? “As a DJ, I have to feel what the audience wants next,” he explains. “I bring all my party mixes and remixes from famous artists. Then I bring all new kinds of ammunition—tons of new stuff and things that people know. It’s going to be a love-sexy fest!”
This is Herndon’s first album since coming out, a collection of work he’s dotingly called his “freedom project.” You can expect to hear emotion and depth, but also upbeat music you can dance to. When asked to describe his musical style for those unfamiliar with him, Herndon struggles to pinpoint his sound to one description.
Alright, so we know he’s going to bring the party, but before you get too caught up in the rave let Tony remind you what Pride’s all about.
“With all the promoters and producers that are involved, I’m just so amped up,” Tony says. “It just sounds like a really fun party with fun people all celebrating the same amazing thing.”
“We’re a little bit of Oprah Winfrey but it’s really Keeping up with the Kardashians,” he says.
“What I see is that [Pride] gives everyone a sense of really believing in and being happy with who they are. They can realize that being different is what makes us special. We come in all shapes, forms and sizes, and it’s an amazing feeling to be around people that are like you.”
With about 10 Pride performances under his belt, Ty is no stranger to the festival scene. He’s continually amazed with the growing community support over the years – with friends, blended families, straight affirming families, colleagues and companies all backing a day of celebration.
If you’re nervous about popping your Pride cherry in Kansas City this year, Tony’s got a little advice for you, “I would say, just allow yourself—especially if you haven’t really—to be free in your own skin. It’s a time where people don’t hold themselves back and you should feel beautiful while your there.”

When it comes to professional sports in St. Louis, what is the first thing you think of? The Cardinals. The Blues. The Rams? Well, not anymore... But did you know that the Gateway City is also home to a professional women’s basketball team? Khalia Collier, a team player on and off the court, has dedicated herself to building a successful new franchise: The St. Louis Surge . The St. Louis Surge is a member of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League, which is a premier professional development woman’s league that consists of 54 member teams from major cities across the U.S. Since Collier purchased the team in 2011, it has been structured into a diverse group of women who take pride in sportsmanship, teamwork and excellence. Players from different basketball backgrounds have come together to show their passion for the sport. Vital VOICE caught up with Collier to chat a little more in-depth about the team and its players. What made you want to start a professional women’s basketball team?
The women’s market in St. Louis has been completely untapped, and we are the first women’s professional team in the city in nearly 30 years. Having the opportunity to have female role models and mentors was a wide open opportunity. And growing up playing the sport since I was five years old, it’s always been a passion of mine.
How does one try out for the team and what are some of the qualifications you look for?
All of our players are post-graduate and we rely solely on recruiting. We have an open tryout once a year. We hand-select and customize our team with players from across the country, but the best part about us is that we recruit only about 4-5 players from out of state. Making sure you have your education along with the passion and talent is very important to us.

We have a lot of community engagement, such as participating in the Susan G. Komen Race, guest speaking at school districts and we have a lot of volunteer time we do as a team. In addition, we like to get to know each other by going out and grabbing dinner and spending time with each other. What has been one of your most memorable moments with St. Surge?
The 2014 National Championship. To have that accomplishment and credibility with us means a great deal. Also, to see the organization grow. Personally, winning championships is truly the best. It’s what we are building in the St. Louis market.V
Does the team have any traditions or rituals either before or after a game?
Before the game, we definitely pray. As for rituals after the game, it’s usually going out and celebrating our win. What has been some of the team’s greatest achievements?
Without question, it would be us making it into the milestone fifth anniversary this season. As an organization, that’s a major

And to keep the party going, the trendy CWE destination launched its official brunch menu this year. Vital VOICE got the chance to check it out – and there’s nothing “sub” par about it. “We are excited to launch our favorite meal of the day at Sub Zero Vodka Bar,” Lucas Gamlin, Gamlin Restaurant Group Proprietor, says. “The menu will offer a new twist on some traditional favorites with items like Kobe Beef Biscuits and Gravy, Crab Cake Benedict and Cinnamon Toast Crunch Pancakes, while the buffet will include a mix of our tremendously popular sushi.” Yes, Sushi Chef Vu Hoang is giving you the full experience in one sitting with their new sushi buffet, which includes sushi,
nigiri, fruit, bread, pastries and seasonal items for $25. You can also upgrade your brunch experience by adding the buffet on to another brunch entrée for $12. All of the brunch entrees are priced appropriately, ranging from $10 up to $18.
French green beans, cherry tomatoes, Nicoise olives and tossed in a soy vinaigrette. It’s items like these that remind you that Sub Zero maintains an influence of sushi, an item that they simply cannot get wrong.
It’s Chef Ortiz’s twists on the classics that inspired some of the featured entrees on the menu, and they’re more than worthy of a spotlight. The rich Short Rib Hash is made with braised short ribs, Yukon potatoes, wild mushrooms, tomato broth and a fried egg. The California Benedict blends tomato, avocado, chipotle aioli with spicy hollandaise, and is served on top of their signature buttermilk waffle. The Southwest Omelet boasts a full blend of chorizo, roasted bell pepper, onions, pepper jack cheese, fire-roasted tomato salsa and fried tortilla strips with choice of Kobe beef or chicken.
But what about brunch cocktails? Endless possibilities are available starting with their Bottomless Mimosas ($25) with your choice of traditional, pomegranate float or the “Green Machine,” our personal recommendation that combines the tartness of fresh grapefruit juice with the sweetness of Midori liqueur. In need of something a bit more savory? Try the Denver Bloody Mary, a spicier concoction made with pickled jalapeno and onion, ham and a hard-boiled quail egg.
While their signature World’s Fair Burger will make an appearance at brunch, other new sandwiches do not disappoint. The Buffalo Tempura Chicken sandwich gives you just the right amount of grease, and the Soft Shell Crab Po Boy is made with tempura soft shell crab, served on a French baguette and gives any seafood spot in the city a run for its money.
