Green walks on shortlist for national rambling award

T

he Deepings has been shortlisted in the search to find Britain's Best Walking Neighbourhood 2019.

Walking group the Ramblers nominated the area because of the Deepings Green Walk Standard, adopted by Market Deeping Town Council and Deeping St James Parish Council, encouraging all new developments to include "safe, accessible, attractive, linked" footpaths. The annual award celebrates areas which create green and welcoming walkable neighbourhoods, supporting increased physical activity, as well as the health, social, economic and environmental benefits that they bring to people and their communities. Last year's winner was Hastings Old Town. SKDC cabinet member for Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Robert Reid, said: "This nomination is welcome recognition of everyone’s hard work to promote walking in and around The Deepings, and will help keep it a great place to live, work and visit.

"This is an outstanding walking neighbourhood and is easily accessible with plenty of variety for all to enjoy riverside, country or urban walking. "Improving people’s health and wellbeing is a key objective for SKDC, so please join us by supporting The Deepings with your online vote.” Announcing the finalists, The Ramblers recognised the local councils' plan to create The Deepings Green Walk, a 15km circuit to link local facilities, housing and green spaces. It is a key part of The Deepings Neighbourhood Plan which all new development will be expected to support. Pam Byrd, of the Deepings First Neighbourhood Plan group, said: "This came from the Neighbourhood Plan process, where instead of deciding where housing and industry should go, we looked at the green space and pathways first, the environment and the community, and then worked other things around that.

Local rambler Peter Jackson said: “I’ve done walks around the Deepings and it is a beautiful place to walk around, with a lot of different environments. It’s very calm, very safe, and there are some beautiful views to be seen and paths to tread.”

Poppy crosses pay tribute to forgotten D-Day invasion mission C

ommemorative poppy crosses have been laid at the side of a runway at former RAF North Witham during a special evening D-Day walk on 5 June.

The guided walk, organised by the visitor economy team at InvestSK, South Kesteven District Council’s economic growth and regeneration company, marked 75 years to the day that a top secret mission was flown from the airfield on the eve of the Normandy invasion. Walkers paused at precisely 21.54 hours to mark the moment that the first aircraft, laden with specially trained paratroopers, took off from the actual runway they were standing on. Earlier they heard how 20 Douglas C47 Skytrain aircraft left RAF North Witham - United States Station 479 now Forestry England-owned Twyford Wood - flying low over the Channel to dodge the radar. Each poppy cross represented one of the aircraft that night. Within hours, hundreds more airborne troops would land in Normandy, many transported in C47s flying from airfields around Grantham. They were joined by more paratroopers and assault gliders from bases in southern England.

D-Day airborne mission inspires new exhibition A

new exhibition has been launched at Grantham Museum telling the story of an audacious mission launched from RAF North Witham on the eve of D Day.

The Tip of the Spear brings to life what happened on June 5, 1944, as aircraft of the United States IX Troop Carrier Command Pathfinder School spearheaded the invasion of Normandy, carrying specially trained paratroopers from the US Army’s 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. The exhibition, organised by the visitor economy team at InvestSK, South Kesteven District Council’s economic growth and regeneration company, tells how pilots and an elite unit of 200 paratroopers came together at what is now Twyford Wood near Colsterworth. Andrew Norman, head of visitor economy for Invest SK said: “We were reminded just how important this mission was by the visit of Lt Col David Hamilton, the last surviving pilot from the mission. “He brought to life how dangerous it was, flying low over the Channel at night to dodge the radar and drop paratroopers behind enemy lines to set up radio signalling equipment to guide in the oncoming airborne invasion.”

“This exhibition reminds us all why we need to remember what happened locally as a major contributor to the whole D-Day effort.” With secrecy strictly observed, the exhibition tells how one American serviceman broke a leg in Nottingham and would not allow treatment until another member of the Pathfinder force was there, for fear of divulging information under anaesthetic.

Clothing, equipment, and descriptions of the ‘rodeo’ organised to attract the best pilots are all on display. The exhibition was curated by Jim Grevatte with the help of local aviation heritage enthusiasts and sponsored by Viking Signs. Grantham Museum is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday between 10am and 4pm.

Rotary gym to help keep fit in the great outdoors V

isitors to Grantham’s Wyndham Park now have a new way to get active thanks to the donation of a £20,000 outdoor gym. The Rotary Club of Grantham has paid for ten pieces of equipment to be installed in South Kesteven District Council’s award-winning park. Featuring a range of aerobic, muscle-toning and strength-building activities, the new gym offers something for everyone to try. It marks the 30th anniversary of the annual RotarySwimarathon which started in Grantham in 1990, and has raised more than £850,000 for local charities and deserving causes in and around Grantham. From a one-day event involving 100 teams, it has grown into a three-day spectacular that attracts more than 270 teams and over 1,600 swimmers. The Rotary Club president, Mr Ray Klingels, said: “For the past three years we have been putting money aside for this special anniversary and, with the support of SKDC and the Wyndham Park Forum, the plans have come to fruition. “We wanted to provide something that would be available to all the people who have supported us over the years. The outdoor gym will provide a lasting legacy from this year’s RotarySwimarathon. “We know how well the park is used and the installation of an outdoor gym seemed a logical step with fitness increasingly on everyone's mind.” A spokesperson for SKDC said: “Parks are traditionally community hubs offering space for leisure activities. This exercise equipment will encourage people to adopt healthier lifestyles by exercising in an open-air environment. It’s fun and, importantly, it’s free. “We hope to encourage everyone, whether they have exercised before or not, to give

it a go. Wyndham Park is a beautiful environment and this added attraction has the benefit of helping people become more active and healthier. “Outdoor gyms are very popular with people of all ages and abilities. They offer the perfect way to kick-start a more active lifestyle with equipment that is not too challenging but still appeals to those who use the park as part of their regular exercise routines. “Thanks go to the Rotary Club, Wyndham Park Forum and the SKDC parks team for all their efforts in making this project a reality.” Dominic Fieldhouse, sports development officer at InvestSK, SKDC’s growth and regeneration company, said: “Increasing physical activity levels across South Kesteven is one of our key objectives in helping to create active communities. “This fantastic range of new gym equipment will enable people of all ages and abilities to exercise for free while also enjoying the benefits of being in the great outdoors. The fact it has been installed in one of Grantham’s most beautiful and popular green spaces will only add to its appeal.” Grantham GP Dr Dave Baker, the chairman of NHS South West Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Grantham and all who have supported its fundraising efforts. “Exercise can bring a wide range of benefits, not least of which is that it can reduce risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer by up to 50%, and lower your risk of early death by up to 30%. “Exercise can be free, easy to take and has an immediate effect, so I would urge everyone to make use of the outdoor gym equipment.”

A guide to

HOLIDAY PACKING W

hether you are the type to have got your case out and things prepared weeks before departure or you prefer to sort things a few hours before you leave, here are a few tips to make your holiday packing as stress free as possible. 20 / www.marketplacemagazine.co.uk

GET PREPARED

If you don’t want to forget that essential item, or find out you’ve over packed when you reach the airport then be prepared. And all it requires is a little forethought and organisation. Especially important if you’ve got other people to pack for too.

CREATE A LIST

When planning for your holiday creating a list is a simple but effective tool. This way it is impossible to forget any essential items and you can make sure you pack for most eventualities. You could even download a holiday packing list from the internet!

CHECK YOUR LUGGAGE ALLOWANCE

This one is extremely important for avoiding stress at the airport. Understanding how many kilograms of baggage allowance you have paid for and what kind of hand luggage you can take is essential. Weighing your case before you get to the airport rather than hoping for

the best is necessary even if it means leaving behind a few pairs of shoes. Being over your allowance at the airport is costly as airlines will charge you by the extra kilogram, and stressful as you don’t want to be the one trying to remove excess weight at the check in desk.

WHAT’S THE WEATHER LIKE?

You might think shorts and T-shirts are all you need but many destinations get cooler in the evening and yes even holiday hotspots get the odd shower or two – so always pack a cosy cover up. Checking the weather forecast will help but being prepared is always better. Many flights depart/arrive in the early hours too and planes can be chilly.

PLAN YOUR OUTFITS

A lot of people think they already do this, but you can avoid a lot of extra weight in that suitcase if you plan your outfits. Going out every night? Do you need something different every night? Could you get away with just two pairs of shoes? How many bikinis or beach cover-ups do you need? Quite often it isn’t as many as you think. Most of us have packed cases and realised when we came back we didn’t wear half of what we packed. Challenge yourself to be minimalistic and accessorise outfits differently rather than taking extra.

PACKING TECHNIQUES

There are plenty of places to look online for great packing techniques but some of our favourites include rolling clothes (they don’t crease) and wear the heaviest items to travel in. Put underwear into shoes to save space and use the exterior zipped pockets of the case (many people don’t). When you are all packed just sit back, relax and enjoy that well earned holiday. www.marketplacemagazine.co.uk / 21

SUITCASES – SIZE DOES MATTER

To carry on or check in – one of life’s decisions which can test the nerve of even the most well-travelled tourist. Airlines, especially budget airlines, will have strict allowances so this must be a priority. A heavy suitcase can eat into a limit of 20kgs before you even start to pack so consider investing in a new one. If bought well it should soon pay for itself.

WHAT GOES IN THE CASE?

The next big decision is what to pack. There really is a limit to how many pairs of shoes or swimsuits anyone needs for a week’s break in the sun. Check with your accommodation and you may find items such as beach towels and hairdryers are provided making extra space for ‘essentials’. 22 / www.marketplacemagazine.co.uk

BMP453_July 19_1-25.indd 22

21/06/2019 14:30:32

PACK WITH STYLE Always put heavier or larger items at the bottom of the suitcase which will make it easier to find items. Ziplock bags are good for separating different items and keeping them safe. Jewellery can be divided into these bags to stop it getting tangled together. Underwear can be slipped in to a plastic bag which keeps it altogether and avoids the risk of any humiliation at airport security.

ROLLING, FOLDING AND IRONING

Travellers are split in to two camps – some will carefully iron all their clothing before it goes in to the case while others take a more relaxed attitude. Rolling clothes

instead of folding not only saves on space but cuts down on the creases. Roll your clothes if space is at a premium in your suitcase and you are not worried about the weight. If you do not need as much space and want to keep the weight down, fold your clothes but resist the last minute decision to squeeze in an iron.

CLING FILM YOUR COSMETICS Ever arrived to find one of your bottles has burst open and the contents have spilt all over your clothes? Once is enough to find your body lotion has exploded mid-flight into your suitcase. Cling film your shampoo bottles and even your face powder and sun cream this will confine any spillages to the cling film barrier.

FEEL POSITIVE ABOUT NEGATIVE SPACE

There is a real satisfaction in knowing that once the lid goes down on the suitcase that every empty space has been put to good use. Pack your socks and other small items into your shoes and delicate items such as a bottle of perfume into the middle of your beach towels, making sure they are in the centre of your case. This way, they are less likely to be broken but if possible, don’t carry anything fragile. Put shoes in a plastic bag. This avoids damaging other items and, if they are dirty, an easy solution to keeping the rest of the items clean and fresh.

GET ORGANISED

Cut out the stress of rummaging through your bag for important items at the airport. Plan your carry-on bag with the essentials such as passport, tickets and money and think carefully about what items you will need on the plane.

BUY MINIATURES

There really is no point taking full sized products such as toothpaste and shampoo. Miniatures are available for most products. Cosmetic companies often give away free samples and gifts with purchases so save these samples to use instead of the full sized versions.

BE BRUTAL ON YOUR RETURN

Do you really need to bring back that half empty bottle of shampoo or should you ditch it in favour of a few extra souvenirs or even a local delicacy? Be brutal on your return and throw away your half used toiletries and free up space and even make your suitcase a little lighter.

STEP AWAY FROM THE SHOES

You will always think you need more than you do and will want to pack additional pieces of clothing and shoes so that you have options. But it is almost always the case you will only wear half the items you have packed. Shoes in particular are a tricky one but whatever you do don’t pack those high heels

CARRY ON

Depending on your airline you may be permitted to take a carry on and a hand bag. More recently certain airlines ask that your carry-on luggage goes into the hold. Pack your hand bag with the essentials for the plane journey just in case you are asked at the last moment to part with your carry-on luggage.

ake a few simple precautions to reduce risks and ensure those long summer days are packed-full of fond memories.

Stay healthy abroad

Reduce stress by planning ahead. Print off tickets and other documentation, book parking and get packing sorted to avoid a last minute rush. Try to get as much sleep as possible during the run up to your holiday. Plan your journey to the airport and allow plenty of time. A wellplanned journey will take in account time needed for car parking and waiting in those long queues to drop off your baggage and security check especially at peak season. Wash your hands and avoid touching your eyes to stop germs spreading. Busy airports and planes are a hive for bacteria.

Antibacterial wipes are useful not only for your hands but on tables and arm rests. Drink lots of water and resist caffeine and alcohol which can dehydrate the body. Dry air in the cabin can dry out the mucus membranes in your nose to lower the resistance against respiratory bugs. Ease in gently. Avoid too many sightseeing trips over the first few days or long sessions by the pool in the full glare of the sun. It is important to give your body time to adjust to the sun and sea. In even the most high-class hotels there are still risks. It is always wise to try to stick to bottled water and don’t forget the same rule applies when brushing teeth or opting for ice in the poolside drink.

Sunburn increases your risk of skin cancer Sunburn doesn’t just happen on holiday, you can burn in the UK, even when it’s cloudy. There’s no safe or healthy way to get a tan. A tan doesn’t protect your skin from the sun’s harmful effects so it is important to strike a balance between protecting yourself from the sun and getting enough vitamin D from sunlight.

HOT TIP

Spend t im when th e in the shade espe e su UK, this n is strongest cially . 3pm fro is between 11 In the a m m M and arc UV (ult raviolet h to October a ) rays nd clouds and are can go throug h present , even on rain y days.

What factor sunscreen (SPF) should I use? Don’t rely on sunscreen alone for protection. Wear suitable clothing and spend time in the shade when the sun is at its hottest. It is a myth that the more expensive the sunscreen the better the protection. The label should have the letters ‘UVA’ in a circle logo and at least four-star UVA protection and a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Make sure the sunscreen is not past its expiry date. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of two to three years. It is never too late to start using sun protection. The body has sophisticated repair mechanisms and while the damage does build up over time it is never too late to start protecting your skin. Aftersun products may sooth the unpleasant symptoms of sunburn but they will not repair any damage. Do not take the risk. If skin is starting to feel hot or starting to go red then cover up immediately and head for the shade. You will find extensive advice on www.cancerresearchuk.org.uk

Needn’t Cost The Earth! J

uly is the perfect time to be sitting in the sunshine, sipping your favourite tipple and admiring the fruits of your labours. The garden is probably looking at its best or certainly its fullest at the moment. This is why it’s a great time to look at how you can make improvements so it will be even better next year.

RAISED BEDS AND BORDER EDGES A raised bed is an area of soil that is higher than the surrounding ground level contained with some form of barrier. There are a number of reasons why you might want or need a raised bed.

This month we are taking a look at projects you might like to take on later in the year:

IMPROVE SOIL CONDITIONS

If your garden has poor soil a raised bed can be filled with quality soil enriched with compost.

INCREASE SOIL TEMPERATURE The higher level and better soil will warm up more quickly than the surrounding ground, particularly if you garden on clay soil.

IMPROVE DRAINAGE

Again, for those on clay soil the planting medium in the raised bed can be improved to create better drainage.

FOR PLANTS WITH SPECIFIC GROWING REQUIREMENTS

It enables the growth of acid lovers on limestone soil or provide alpines with adequate drainage and brings them up to a better viewing level.

IMPROVED ACCESS

Very helpful for those with restricted mobility who may find it easier to sit next

to a raised bed than to bend or kneel at a ground level border. At the right height it can double as a seat. A raised bed on legs provides even better access to sit at.

AESTHETICS

Changes of level add interest to a garden.

A border edging can serve a number of purposes.

A single row of bricks laid flush to the ground would serve to hold back the soil or bark of a border and provide a mowing strip to the lawn edge. It could be used to separate different loose materials e.g. gravel from bark or, as in last month’s article, to hold back plants. It may be purely aesthetic in order to make the edge look nice and crisp. If your border edges are well defined they can create leading lines to take your eyes on a journey around your garden.

MAKE YOUR OWN RAISED BED OR BORDER EDGING Possible Materials

What you make your raised bed or border edging from will depend largely on the purpose they have to serve and what ‘feel’ you wish it to have. I have mentioned themes in previous articles. Your theme may dictate your choice of materials.

Pantiles or roof slates would give reminiscent of ‘Mr McGregor’s garden. Warning: Once slates are in place, remove sharp edges by gently hammering down along the top edge.

HERE ARE A FEW SUGGESTIONS:

Cottage Garden: Clay or plastic pipes as the edge of a raised bed sunk into the ground. Tops can be used as planters.

Pallet collars make super raised beds. Used ones can be purchased quite cheaply. Reclaimed Brick as a wall, a saw tooth edge or merely a mowing strip.

Children’s, Fun Cover Fence panels with old plastic compost sacks attached to their backs to offer protection from damp and stop the soil from spilling through the gaps. Seaside: Think of sea defences with wood groynes made from pallet wood or scaffold planks, either left natural or painted in pastel shades. Metal cages filled with stones can double up as seating. Cobbles, rocks and boulders, if large enough to hold back soil or separate a border from a gravel path. Upturned coloured glass bottles can be used as a border edging, if sunken well into the ground. Japanese: Use stones, bamboo, mossy logs or pallet wood. The latter could be used as planks in a conventional way or shorter strips pushed into the ground, stood vertically, would work equally well. These could be painted very dark or very light. Jungle & Woodland themes are very similar and require wooden finishes and rustic, natural materials such as mossy logs and stones. Med/Holiday: Coloured glass bottles look very Mediterranean set into a rendered wall. A wall built from plastic eco bricks could be completely covered with render. Don’t just think outside the box, try using it to make something new!

Wattle made from woven stems pruned from the garden.

Garden IN THE FLOWER GARDEN

POTS & CONTAINERS

• Plan ahead by planting autumn flowering bulbs and saving seeds from plants as they mature • Don't be too tidy. Cut back anything really unsightly but consider leaving some stems, berries and seed heads for the insects and birds

• Continue to deadhead and feed regularly, unless you added slow release fertiliser • Keep an eye on watering even if it rains, as rain cannot always penetrate the foliage • If you’re entertaining in the garden, place pots of fragrant plants near to seating areas

IN THE VEGETABLE GARDEN • If you do water, give the plants a good soaking in the morning or evening, to encourage deep roots • Plant little and often to prevent gluts of vegetables

IN THE GREENHOUSE • Keep on top of ventilating, watering and feeding and add shading in really hot weather • Pick crops as soon as they mature to encourage more fruits

LAWN CARE: • Continue to mow the lawn but set the blades a little higher in hot, dry weather to keep it green • Consider leaving a small area to go wild, you may be surprised what flowers appear amongst the grass • If you trim the edges every time you cut the lawn, the borders will look tidy, even if they aren’t

allow small creatures find their way back in • Avoid introducing fish into a wildlife pond

LOOKING AFTER THE WILDLIFE: • Keep feeding the birds and providing them with fresh water • Keep the pond topped up with water and clear overcrowded waterweeds • If you must strim long grass, check for Hedgehogs sleeping in the daytime

PONDS: • Remove pond weeds as soon as possible. Leave on the pond side for a couple of days to

Tropaeolum majus (garden nasturtium) These delightfully bright annuals are great in pots, hanging baskets and borders. Some will even climb up your fence. They're great for children as they have large seeds and grow quickly. The flowers and leaves are edible and will brighten a salad. I am led to believe the un-ripened seed can be used like capers but I can't vouch for that. They are great to draw black fly and cabbage white butterflies away from your brassicas. I relocate any unwanted caterpillars to sacrificial Nasturtium plants which I grow out of sight.

HOME FOCUS

Outdoor Living S

pace is often a premium with homes nowadays. Driveways are a luxury and gardens are getting smaller. Utilising every piece of available space is becoming an artform in itself so as we look to how we can best use the area we have, it’s worth considering how we employ our outside space.

Many American homes create additional living space on their front porch. Agreed the weather is often kinder than it is in the UK, but we do have times when we could readily enjoy a living space to the front of the house. If you think about it, most homes with front gardens are there simply for show. They generally serve very little purpose (apart from to allow parking space occasionally) and oftentimes become a chore to create something that is only enjoyed on the walk in through the front door. No matter how small the front of your house is, consider if you’re able to create an area of privacy, perhaps with some hedging or trellis, and pop out a couple of bistro chairs and a table, or a simple garden bench

so that you can sit with a cup of tea and watch the world go by. If you are lucky to have more space, then a front porch with open sides and a roof (rather than the enclosed, boot-room style) could be a great use of space. Outdoor rugs and furniture are easy to come by nowadays which means that you can dress the area to suit the style of your house. The addition of a small table provides practical storage space for either a pretty plant or a solar light. In fact, solar lights come in so many shapes and sizes now that these are great additions to all gardens. You can add ones on strings, posts etc and by strategically placing them around the plot you can create a lovely atmosphere for those late, balmy evenings that you can enjoy in the summer. If you’d rather not sit out the front of your house then look to creating something similar to a porch out the back instead of a traditional patio. By using folding doors which are flush to the height of your outside space, you can make the zones really flow seamlessly. It also makes carrying drinks and snacks outside so much easier as you don’t have to negotiate any steps or thresholds. By opening up your doors in this way you also create a

disabled-friendly living area which is great for wheelchair users or even those who find walking a little harder. Seating outside is also important. On trend at the moment are hanging chairs which come in a variety of styles. You can get these on a fixed frame or ones which hang from a roof beam. There’s something very relaxing about gently swinging in the breeze with a beverage and listening to the noises of the garden around you. Pop a couple of cushions on the chair and grab a blanket if there’s a breeze. You can snuggle up and swing to your hearts content. If you don’t mind lighting a little fire, then a firepit or chimnea can provide warmth on a summers evening. They’re also great for toasting marshmallows - an old fashioned pastime perhaps but one which everyone enjoys. Just be careful not to sit too closely or your clothes are likely to end up smelling of smoke. Alternatively there are gas versions available which are very effective. Although one could question why you’d pay to heat an outdoor space! But still, whether you have a small balcony or an acreage, there are things you can do to enjoy fresh air and relax at the same time.

Keep all your perishable ingredients in the fridge until you’re ready to serve them. People often graze over a period of time at a barbecue so you want to avoid taking food out before it’s necessary.

2

Thaw ALL your frozen meat before you put it on the barbecue, otherwise it may appear to be cooked on the outside but will be raw on the inside. You may want to consider pre-cooking things like chicken and pork and just finish them off on the BBQ.

3

Always wash your hands before handling food to avoid any cross-contamination. If you touch raw meat or fish, wash your hands before touching ready-to-eat foods and do not put ready-to-eat foods on plates that have been used to carry raw meat or fish. You also want to avoid using any utensils for both raw and ready-to-eat foods.

7

Make sure your barbecue is hot enough before you start and turn your meat during cooking time so that it cooks evenly throughout.

If you are planning to be serving food over the course of an afternoon, put salads, meats and other perishable foods out in batches in fresh bowls.

Ensure all meat, particularly chicken, pork, sausages and burgers and fish is cooked throughout. You can buy meat thermometers from lots of shops.

Keep those delicious desserts in the fridge until the main course is over avoiding unnecessary time standing around.

4 5

6

Beware of dripping meat and fish juices, avoid trailing raw meat or fish over cooked and don’t use leftover marinade as a sauce.

Never leave food out in direct sunlight, pick a shady spot or have a buffet table indoors. Don’t leave food out for more than two hours. The safest option is often to throw away leftovers.

JAMES WALKER

The man who helps you resolve your consumer complaints!

Nothing Lasts Forever H

ow long would you expect a sofa to last for? Ten years? Twenty with care? How about a new car or caravan?

When we buy goods, we have certain expectations about how long we expect them to last – even though we may intend to replace them before their time is up. With bigger goods, we tend to expect things to be more substantial and therefore last longer. But weirdly, we seem to have lower expectations of smaller items. Maybe it’s because they’re portable, or easy to lose or damage. Chief amongst those items are mobile phones. Mobile phones are losing their edge when it comes to innovations. With top spec cameras, apps, screens and other developments running dry and handsets hitting the £1,000 mark just on name and desirability alone, people are questioning if a phone that packs in after two years is really value for money. All of which begs the question, if a high spec mobile phone lasts around three years before problems kick in, then is it worth it? Many people are ‘downgrading’ to older model phones or even retro handsets like Nokia’s beloved 3310. But what steps can you take to avoid the mobile phone meltdowns? Here are my tips:

Replacing bits.

The simplest way to keep your phone going is to replace bits that aren’t working any more or are damaged. However, this can be seriously expensive and complicated. Before splashing out on a new phone, check online to see how much it will be to replace a broken screen or a damaged battery. Bear in mind that with some businesses, if you don’t use an authorised repairer then you void the warranty. So saving some cash on that plastic screen replacement from the stall on the market could cost you big time if something else packs in and you have to go to the phone provider.

Follow the battery life tips – but bear in mind they’ve changed in recent years.

There are tons of tips on extending your phone’s battery life online. But understanding how the phone works (a little) can help you get the most out of the battery. Most phones will start to lose battery power after a while, generally 400 full charges (cycles, to use the industry term) drops you 20%. Very roughly, that gives you about 5 years of charging every day. But in reality, this varies loads. Doing simple things like avoiding extremes of hot or cold for your phone, topping up a phone battery charge while it’s at the 40-50% mark rather than running the battery down and checking your settings to see what apps are eating up your battery will help.

Know your warranty.

Most phones are sold with a warranty – a guarantee for your phone covering basic fixes and repairs. Now regular readers will know that warranties are usually pretty rubbish and give firms loads of options to get out of repairs. Get to know your warranty and see what it covers you for. Don’t forget to put in your diary when it runs out too. Warrantees are misleading names for these agreements as they aren’t insurance contracts. Insurance contracts are regulated whereas the agreements that come with your phone are not. But the phone provider still has to follow laws that back you up, like the Consumer Rights Act, that govern items that aren’t working as they should. If in doubt, fight back and make a complaint.

Get a good insurance policy.

If the guarantee or warranty that comes with the phone isn’t great, get an affordable mobile phone or multigadget insurance policy. Never buy from the retailer, they’re usually overpriced and poor value. Check online and find a good policy for less than a tenner a month that will cover you for all eventualities. You can find out more about your rights or make a complaint using Resolver for free at www.resolver.co.uk. SAFER

SUMMER PLAYTIME for

CHILDREN

You need to make sure that there is no way out of your garden if you are keen to relax and read a book, or try and get the house tidied up while your children are playing in the garden. You children know it is not safe to leave the garden, but when a beautiful butterfly comes into the garden and they are chasing it around, they could soon be out of the garden and playing down the road before you know it. Although it may seem obvious, – you need to ensure that the garden and play area is kept neat and tidy. A hosepipe that you’re using to water the plants can easily trip up your child, as can their skipping rope or a bat and ball left lying in the grass. Why not get your children involved in tiding up the garden? Have a large box or bucket where all the toys go at the end of playtime so toys aren’t left out as trip hazards or misplaced and lost. Be aware of the plants in your garden, while you have encouraged your children to only play on the grass, they can tumble into your flower beds and plants by accident when they are having fun. Keep an eye out for rose bushes and similar plants that could cause injury to your child and perhaps encourage them to play in another area of the garden. Pond dipping is an excellent activity for kids of all ages with the creatures in the pond changing all the time. Spotting frogspawn is fun as you can keep checking back on the frogspawn and looking for tadpoles and then eventually for frogs. However, ensure your children are with a responsible adult and that the water is shallow. Make sure your children do not stand too close to the edge to avoid risk of them falling in.

A

s summer finally arrives it is only normal that you and your children will be keen to get outside in the fresh air and warm sunshine, to explore the garden and the local park, while making memories that will last a life time. While allowing your children to play outside during the summer is a great idea, it is also important that they stay safe and sound. We have put together some tips and guidance to ensure that your children enjoy a safer summer playtime.

BMP453_July 19_26-51.indd 38

Another great pastime for the summer weather is paddling pools. Have some balls and nets in the pool that your children can play with, but make sure they are always supervised when playing in the paddling pool. Depending on your child’s age, you may not need to be in the pool with them, but sitting next to the pool would be a recommended safety precaution. As with pond dipping, make sure your children know never to go in the paddling pool if you or another adult are not present. As summer arrives you can almost immediately smell food cooking on BBQs. It is important that your child knows about BBQ safety. Make sure you tell them not to play near the BBQ, explain the dangers and heat of the BBQ and make sure an adult is always nearby and that the BBQ is never unattended so your children can stay safe and avoid risk of being hurt.

21/06/2019 14:36:34

It is important that you don’t spend all day outside with your young children. You need to make sure the whole family is wearing the right suntan lotion or sun cream and that it is regularly reapplied. Children need to have time in the shade too so they can avoid getting sunburnt; remember a child’s skin is much more delicate than your own. Be aware of wasps in the garden. Ensure you have a fully stocked medicine cabinet (that is kept out of reach of children) and it is stocked with wasp repellent and sting relief creams.

Playtime in the garden is a great time to improve your child’s social skills, so invite children round to play and keep a close eye on them. Make sure your child knows that pushing and shoving is bad and that they need to share their toys and play nicely together. If you go to a park together make sure the park and play equipment is suitable for the age of your child. You need to keep a close eye on them at all times, but also allow your child to have the freedom to explore for themselves,

be brave and try different equipment, but be on hand if they really need you. There are lots of great games that you can create to play in the garden, but remember that a child’s imagination will allow them to create fantastic games too. If the sun is shining after a rainy night then making mud pies is brilliant fun, just make sure you have cleaning products nearby as this will get very messy! Bats and balls are essentials for gardens for summer playtime and lots of games can be invented and played for hours on end. Wildlife and bugs will be all over your garden so why not make the most of this by creating ladybird hotels, worm mounds, snail chalets and butterfly houses so you can keep checking back on the new bugs that have entered your garden during the day or overnight.

What is your favourite memory as a child playing in the garden during the summer? www.marketplacemagazine.co.uk / 39

A Safari of

South African wines I

have to admit it, my vinous home is firmly rooted in France. It is generally speaking where the geography and topography has been blessed by nature to enable the region to produce some of the worlds finest wines, of almost every variety of both red and white grape varieties and which set the benchmark upon which all other countries seek to have their own wines judged.

One can often read of wines from Oregon, that the wines of Willamette Valley can produce Pinot Noir more Burgundian in style than Burgundy! Similarly, the red wines of Margaret River, in Western Australia, are often explained by the statement that the wine is comprised of a Bordeaux blend of grapes. These regions constantly tip their hat to France and seek to claim that their very best might just be as good as top-quality French wines. It is no accident that Bordeaux remains the largest traded fine wine market in the world and also, that the British are their biggest customer. Yet, other areas of the world can and do produce world-class wines, wines of distinction, a sense of place and in qualitative terms, at least as compelling a choice for your money than anything from France, well almost! A prime example and a most worthy alternative to France, are the wines of South Africa. Although still described as “New World”, the Muscat-derived sweet wines from Constantia achieved world-wide acclaim as early as the 18th century, so they are hardly “new”. The most significant region lies around the Cape. South Africa has around 2% of the worlds area under vine but at approximately 265 million gallons produced each year, it is well within the top ten in terms of world wine production. In common with most wine growing regions, South Africa has a significant mass-market, bulk produced core, not least that being served by the Co-Operative KWV, but it does also have a smaller but

equally important fine wine market. The geography allows a wide range of grape varieties to flourish, not least its signature grapes of Chenin Blanc and Pinotage but the finest wines are produced from international varieties. Supermarkets tend to pigeon-hole South African wines on the budget shelf, tending to offer the lowest quality wines on simple price points. To do so is a huge mistake as South Africa has a number of really great producers, making wonderful wines and something genuinely different. In supermarket terms, as is so often the case, Waitrose and M&S tend to stand out but if you have the will to search them out, the more mainstream supermarkets do have one or two interesting examples.

I WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO TRY THE FOLLOWING: Ken Forrester, Workhorse, Chenin Blanc, M&S around £8. Ken Forrester is a terrific producer and makes a wide range of classy wines, this certainly being one of them. Notes of apricot, white pear and honeysuckle, this wine

would be excellent with white fish and chicken and soft goats cheese dishes. The merest hint of oak to add complexity, this wine is all about freshness and vibrancy. It is an easy aperitif and will appeal to all lovers of Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc. Rustenberg, Chardonnay, Waitrose, £11. This is an excellent example of warm-climate Chardonnay. Rich, full-bodied and open, full of ripe, white stone fruit, a hint of pineapple, orange peel and superbly balanced. Wonderful with grilled chicken. The Chocolate Block, Waitrose, £22. A wonderful wine, blending both Bordeaux and the Rhone grape varieties. Full bodied, powerful but fine. tips for a healthy

HOLIDAY H

olidays are about switching off and taking a break from everything, so to ensure you have a relaxing, happy and healthy holiday consider a few things before you go with our five tips.

REDUCE STRESS BY PLANNING AHEAD Print off tickets and other documentation,

book parking, travel insurance and get your packing sorted to avoid a last minute rush. Spread the load and let the children help pack their own things. Check the weight of your baggage at home to ensure it is within your ticketed allowance. You will pay much more at the airport for extra kilos so pack smart. Make sure your carry-on luggage is legal and contains no liquids larger than 100ml. You don’t want to be throwing away your favourite perfume because it is in a

BMP453_July 19_26-51.indd 46

300l bottle. Plan your journey to the airport and allow plenty of time. A well-planned journey will take in account time needed for car parking and waiting in queues to drop off your baggage and security check especially during peak season.

GERM FREE Wash your hands regularly and avoid

touching your eyes to stop any germs spreading. Busy airports and planes are a hive for bacteria. Antibacterial wipes and sprays are useful not only for your hands but on tables and arm rests. There is no need to go overboard but remember hand washing is the first line of defence for limiting the spread of disease.

HYDRATE Drink lots of water and resist caffeine and

alcohol which can dehydrate the body. Dry air in the cabin can dry out the mucus membranes in your nose to lower the resistance against respiratory bugs. There is the temptation to not drink as much water when travelling but this is one of those times when hydration is key. Without enough fluid you will become more tired and irritable and your skin will not be healthy and dewy. When you are on holiday

21/06/2019 14:40:28

it is important to remember that even in the most high-class hotels there are still risks. It is always wise to try to stick to bottled water and don’t forget the same rule applies when brushing teeth or opting for ice in the poolside drink.

STAY PROTECTED Don’t rely on sunscreen alone for sun protection. When you dig out your stash of sunscreen make sure it’s not past its expiry date. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of two to three years.

TAKE IT EASY Ease into your holiday

gently. Avoid too many sightseeing trips over the first few days or long sessions by the pool in the full glare of the sun. If you are staying for one or two weeks try not overdo it as it could ruin several days of your holiday if you get sunburnt on the first day. It is important to give your body time to adjust to the sun and sea. Holidays are for relaxing after all.

BEAUTY

PROBLEMS solved. HELP... HOW DO I KEEP MY NAILS LOOKING HEALTHY? 2 Why is it so hard to grow (and maintain) beautiful nails? You may be surprised to learn that nails are not alive, this means that they can’t repair themselves, it’s up to us to help them stay healthy and look their best.

1

Invest in a high-quality hand cream. Many things in our day-to-day lives can be damaging to our nails, moisturising daily helps to keep them hydrated, preventing them from becoming brittle, cracking and peeling. When applying moisturising cream, make sure that you rub it onto the nail and into your cuticles.

Keep nails on your hands and toes dry and clean to prevent bacteria from settling under your nails, which can cause fungal infections.

3

Trim and file your nails regularly, overgrowing can lead to cracking or splitting. Plus, paying regular attention to your nails means that you can spot any problems early on.

4

Diet is a contributing factor to healthy nails - eat plenty of greens and drink lots of water to help them stay strong.

TOP TIPS

Don’t share nail files and emery boards, these become a hive of bacteria. Keep yours to yourself and replace it regularly. Wear rubber gloves when washing up. Nails are more likely to break when submerged in water, and both water and chemicals in washing detergents will dry your nails out, causing them to become brittle. If you suffer from extremely weak nails you may benefit from biotin, a vitamin supplement shown to help strengthen nails.

HELP... HOW DO I KEEP MY SKIN LOOKING HEALTHY? 3 7 We all crave perfect, glowing skin. If you don’t have time for an intensive skincare routine, there are still little things you can do to give your skin a helping hand.

1

Wear sun cream. Did you know that up to 90% of wrinkles are caused by sun exposure? Sun cream will protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays which are damaging to the skin.

2

Exfoliate and moisturise regularly to clear away dead skin and unblock pores. Remember, you need to change your moisturisers with the season. Skin becomes drier in the winter, meaning that it will need a more intense moisturiser.

Use cool water when washing. Hot showers may feel great but hot water strips skin of its moisture and washes away protective oils. Limit showers to 10 minutes and have the water as cool as you can bear!

4

Sleep deprivation lowers circulation, which is why we look so pale and washed out after a bad night’s sleep. It’s called ‘Beauty Sleep’ for a reason, get plenty of it.

5

Keep your beauty products as clean and simple as possible. Products with colour, fragrance or that are ‘antibacterial’ can cause skin irritation.

6

Of course, a healthy lifestyle is key to a radiant complexion. Make sure that you’re drinking plenty of water, which will flush out toxins that cause inflammation and blemishes. Studies show that foods high in fats and carbohydrates cause more wrinkles and lean proteins such as fish, poultry, beans and lentils are great for rejuvenating skin cells.

Remove make-up before bed. It can be a pain when you’re knackered, but leaving it on will clog your pores, dry your skin out and cause ‘skin dandruff ’.

TOP TIPS

Lightly scratch the skin on your leg, does it leave a white mark? If yes, this means that you have dry skin that is craving exfoliation and a moisturiser. Don’t touch your face. Your hands are a breeding ground of bacteria, every time you touch your face you are transferring the bacteria there. Clean your make-up brushes at least once every month. Rose, sandalwood and bergamot essential oils mixed with water are great for hydrating your skin. Hydrated skin is less prone to frown lines and wrinkles. www.marketplacemagazine.co.uk / 49

The impressive Sagrada Familia.

A weekend break in...

BARCELONA B

arcelona is one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations. It has a wealth of culture to offer visitors with its impressive architecture, world class museums and galleries. Explore the Gothic streets, enjoy the great food in one of the many traditional tapas restaurants and soak up the atmosphere of this vibrant and cosmopolitan Catalan city.

Barcelona is a colourful and vibrant city that combines a chic city vibe and has all the benefits of having a beach too. A weekend break here could be jam packed with visiting museums, galleries and the Art Nouveau buildings of Gaudi. The Picasso Museum is certainly a great place to enjoy the artist’s work and no trip to Barcelona is complete without casting your eyes over the Sagrada Familia. The weather is one of the draws of the city as there are rarely weather extremes and throughout the Spring, Summer and Autumn you are pretty much guaranteed sunshine. There are so many little cafés and bars dotted throughout the streets of the old town that you could spend an entire afternoon people watching with a delicious bottle of Rioja or Sangria. Football fans of course could head over to Camp Nou and have a little tour of the iconic teams’ home ground. Take a morning walk around colourful Parc Guell or dust off your bikini and head to one of the sunsoaked beaches. As the sun goes down another side of

Barcelona emerges. There’s a fantastic selection of nightlife here with nightclubs, bars, restaurants and jazz clubs dotted around. Tucking into a tasty paella or enjoying tempting selection of tapas will top off the day with the Spaniards traditionally eating pretty late. Port Olympic is where you’ll find trendy beachfront bars that go on until around 4am or find yourself one of the great value Cava Bars to enjoy an affordable glass or two of fizz. You can find some really great value places to eat and drink on your trip so it is possible to be as cost effective or as lavish as your budget allows. Amble around Las Ramblas and soak up the Spanish atmosphere. There are plenty of designer shops on the five kilometre stretch from the harbour up to El Corte Ingles so you could bag yourself a real bargain. What’s really to love about Barcelona is its flexibility. You can go there for a cultural trip, a beach break, a shopping trip or a relaxing people watching trip. One thing is for sure - Barcelona will draw you in and you’ll be booking your next trip in no time.

Something went wrong with

my holiday what should I do?

Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire

I

f something went wrong with your holiday you might be able to get compensation from the company you booked with. If you’re still on holiday, tell the company or travel agent about the problem as soon as possible. You might be able to get it sorted quicker - like if there’s a problem with the room. If you don’t say anything until you get home, you might get less compensation or none at all.

Your legal rights depend on whether you: • went on a package holiday • went on a holiday with ‘linked travel arrangements’ • were an independent traveller

CHECK IF IT’S A PACKAGE HOLIDAY It’s likely to be a package holiday if you’ve booked 2 or more types of travel service at the same time for the same holiday from a travel organiser. For example if you booked a flight and a hotel through a travel agent. The trip has to last more than 24 hours or include an overnight stay.

Travel services are:

• transport - like flights, train or coach journeys • accommodation • vehicle rental - including cars, motorcycles and motorhomes • any other tourist service that’s a significant part of the holiday (around 25%) and is advertised as an essential feature - like entrance to an amusement park, concert or sports event

It’s also likely to be a package if the travel agent organises the different parts of your holiday and calls it a package or charges you a total price.

It’s also a package holiday if all of the following apply:

• you booked part of your holiday by clicking on a link from a company you’ve already booked with - like on its website or in the email confirmation it sent you • you didn’t need to give your details again because the first company passed them on • you made the second booking within 24 hours of the first For example, you book a flight and then click on a link on the airline’s website and book a hotel without filling in your details again.

CHECK IF YOU’VE MADE ‘LINKED TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS’ It’s a linked travel arrangement if you book 2 or more travel services for the same trip but they’re with different companies and you pay for them separately. For example if you use an online or high street travel agent to book a flight and a hotel with different companies. 58 / www.marketplacemagazine.co.uk

BMP453_July 19_52-68.indd 58

21/06/2019 13:27:37

It’s also a linked travel arrangement if all the following apply: • you book a travel service with one company and then another service with a different company by clicking on a link from the first company • you’re asked to give some or all of your details to the second company - like if it has your name but you need to enter your card details • you made the second booking within 24 hours of the first • the trip is more than 24 hours or includes an overnight stay

For example, you book a flight and then click on a link for car hire - you have to give your details to each company.

CHECK IF YOU’RE AN INDEPENDENT TRAVELLER

If you organised the holiday yourself, you’ll be an independent traveller. You’re likely to have different contracts with different companies, not necessarily all booked at the same time. You’ll also be an independent traveller if your holiday isn’t a package holiday or a linked travel arrangement.

WRITE TO THE COMPANY AND ASK FOR COMPENSATION Who you write to will depend on who you booked the holiday through. If you booked

a package holiday, write to the customer services department of the tour operator you used. If you booked it yourself or made a linked travel arrangement, write directly to the accommodation or service provider concerned (like the hotel or excursion provider).

Make sure you include:

• your booking reference • clear details of what went wrong • copies of any evidence you have - like photos • copies of receipts • how much compensation you want

1. Register a complaint on the ABTA website (www.abta.com) 2. The company should get back to you. If this doesn’t work you can get ABTA to mediate between you and the company. This means that ABTA will work with both you and the company to reach an agreement. There’s a fee for this service. Alternatively, you could choose an EUapproved ADR scheme on the European Commission website yourself to try and solve the problem more informally. https:// ec.europa.eu/info/policies/consumers_en

It’s a good idea to send the letter by registered post and keep a copy, so you have proof that the holiday company received it. You can also email them - some of them have online forms. Keep a copy of what you send. If the company makes you an offer that you think is too low, you can ask for more. They might come back to you with a higher offer.

IF YOU’RE STILL UNHAPPY

If you booked with a company which is a member of a trade association, such as the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), you might be able to complain to them.

Check if the company you booked with is a member of ABTA. You won’t be able to complain to ABTA if they’re not a member.

THEBOOK REVIEW The Spy and The Traitor BY BEN MACINTYRE

Shortlisted for the 2018 Baillie Gifford Prize. 'The best true spy story i have ever read' John Le Carre. A thrilling Cold War story about a KGB double agent, by one of Britain's greatest historians - now with a new afterword On a warm July evening in 1985, a middle-aged man stood on the pavement of a busy avenue in the heart of Moscow, holding a plastic carrier bag. In his grey suit and tie, he looked like any other Soviet citizen. The bag alone was mildly conspicuous, printed with the red logo of Safeway, the British supermarket. The man was a spy. A senior KGB officer, for more than a decade he had supplied his British spymasters with a stream of priceless

The Outsider BY: STEPHEN KING

secrets from deep within the Soviet intelligence machine. No spy had done more to damage the KGB. The Safeway bag was a signal: to activate his escape plan to be smuggled out of Soviet Russia. So began one of the boldest and most extraordinary episodes in the history of spying. Ben Macintyre reveals a tale of espionage, betrayal and raw courage that changed the course of the Cold War forever...

Soon to be an HBO limited series starring Ben Mendelsohn. 'If you read only one thriller this summer, make it this one' Daily Mail. A horrifying crime. Water-tight evidence points to a single suspect. Except he was seventy miles away, with an iron-clad alibi. Detective Anderson sets out to investigate the impossible: how can the suspect have been both at the scene of the crime and in another town?

Never Greener BY RUTH JONES The Number One Sunday Times Bestseller, picked for The Zoe Ball TV Book Club. `Ruth Jones is excellent on human nature and why we make the mistakes we do. I felt for every character. Unputdownable.' Jojo Moyes In her unmissable debut, actress and screenwriter Ruth Jones shows us the dangers of trying to recapture that which was once lost and failing to realise the beauty of what we already have. `We spend most of our lives wishing we were somewhere else or someone else, or looking forward or harping back. Always thinking the grass is greener on the other side. But it never is. It's still grass. Just a

different patch of it, that's all.' The past has a habit of tracking us down. And tripping us up. When Kate was twenty-two, she had an intense and passionate affair with a married man, Callum, which ended in heartbreak. Kate thought she'd never get over it. Seventeen years later, life has moved on - Kate, now a successful actress, is living in London, married to Matt and mother to little Tallulah. Meanwhile Callum and his wife Belinda are happy together, living in Edinburgh and watching their kids grow up. The past, it would seem, is well and truly behind them all. But then Kate meets

Callum again. And they are faced with a choice: to walk away from each other . . . or to risk finding out what might have been. Second chances are a rare gift in life. But that doesn't mean they should always be taken‌

Those Who Are Loved BY VICTORIA HISLOP

The gripping new novel by Sunday Times Number One bestseller Victoria Hislop is set against the backdrop of the German occupation of Greece, the subsequent civil war and a military dictatorship, all of which left deep scars. Athens 1941. After decades of political uncertainty, Greece is polarised between Right- and Left-wing views when the Germans invade. Fifteenyear-old Themis comes from a family divided by these political differences. The Nazi occupation deepens the fault-lines between those she loves just as it reduces Greece to destitution. She watches friends die in the ensuing famine and is moved to commit acts of resistance. In the civil war that follows the end of the occupation, Themis joins the Communist army, where she experiences the extremes of love and hatred and the paradoxes presented by a war in which Greek fights Greek. Eventually imprisoned on the infamous islands of exile, Makronisos and then Trikeri, Themis encounters another prisoner whose life will entwine with her own in ways neither can foresee. And finds she must weigh her principles against her desire to escape and live. As she looks back on her life, Themis realises how tightly the personal and political can become entangled. While some wounds heal, others deepen.

In a House of Lies BY IAN RANKIN

The instant number one bestseller from the iconic Ian Rankin. The British Book Awards - Crime & Thriller Book Of The Year Shortlist; Specsavers National Book Awards - Crime & Thriller Of The Year Shortlist; 'Genius' Lee Child; 'Stunning' Jilly Cooper 'Gripping' Kate Mosse 'A must-read' Tana French 'Utterly Engrossing' Daily Mail. Private investigator Stuart Bloom was missing, presumed dead. Until now. His body is discovered in an abandoned car - in an area

that had already been searched... Detective Inspector Siobhan Clarke combs through the mistakes of the original investigation. After a decade without answers, it's time for the truth. But it seems everyone involved with the case is hiding something. None more so than Siobhan's own mentor: former detective John Rebus. The only man who knows where the trail may lead and that it could be the end of him.

An Unwanted Guest BY SHARI LAPENA The Sunday Times Bestseller. 'Tense. Unpredictable. Unputdownable. Shari Lapena's novels are domestic noir at its finest' Simon Kernick. The new pulse-pounding and unputdownable thriller from the author of the number one bestseller The Couple Next Door, and A Stranger In The House. We can't choose the strangers we meet. As the guests arrive at beautiful, remote Mitchell's Inn, they're all looking forward to a relaxing weekend deep in the forest, miles from anywhere. They watch their fellow guests with interest,

from a polite distance. Usually we can avoid the people who make us nervous, make us afraid. With a violent storm raging, the group finds itself completely cut off from the outside world. Nobody can get in - or out. And then the first body is found . . . and the horrifying truth comes to light. There's a killer among them - and nowhere to run. Until we find ourselves in a situation we can't escape. Trapped.
