Healthy cooking for carers

free healthy cooking course for people who may feel isolated as an unpaid carer is to take place in Grantham. It is being run by Carers First, thanks to a £240 Ward Member Grant by SKDC Cabinet Member Councillor Helen Goral.

The course will provide knowledge and expertise to help carers, who may be stuck at home caring full-time for a relative, to provide healthy, quick, simple and nutritious meals. Cllr Goral said: “Carers First is a

charity which supports unpaid carers with emotional and practical help. “This is a fantastic initiative to use the carers’ support network to help people enjoy some free time away from their caring duties, meet up with others in the same boat, and hopefully pick up some useful tips.” The cookery event at the Jubilee Church Life Centre on London Road, will specifically be for carers in the Grantham area, and could be repeated if it proves to be a success, and funding is available. Organiser Karen Johnson said: “Because being a carer can be very time-consuming, what we’d like to do is pass on some recipes and skills to help people rustle up some quick, simple and nutritious meals. “The course, which will take place early next year, will bring carers together for peer support, so they will get to meet others in the same situation. It will also give them a break from their caring role and get them out of the house while they learn something new.” As well as learning some new recipes, there will be a course pack to take away so that people can continue to create meals at home. Beginner’s guide to choosing your

first Christmas Tree T

here’s nothing quite like a real Christmas Tree to decorate a room and fill your home with that nostalgic seasonal scent, so we spoke to Sam Garford from Nunton Christmas Trees in Maxey to ask him for some top tips on choosing that perfect tree. It’s likely you are looking for your tree to last over the Christmas period, so there are a few things you can do to help this happen. Starting with the freshness of the tree, local tree sellers should be able to give you a date when their trees were cut from the fields and hopefully this won’t have been too long. Don’t be afraid to ask. How can you tell if a tree is fresh? The needles should look shiny, green, and fresh - not dry or brown. They should not fall off when you pull on a branch. Make sure your tree stand is able to hold water, it’s amazing how much water your tree can drink. Keep your tree well-watered. Water prevents the needles from drying and dropping off and maintains the fragrance. Trees may use several pints a day, so check the water level in the stand every day or so. To help it take up the water it is advised to trim an inch of the base of the tree, do this as near as possible to putting it in the stand so you don’t give the tree time to seal over with sap. The type of tree you buy also has a bearing

on how it will last later in the season, there is: Nordmann Fir: Currently the top choice for indoor Christmas trees. The lush, glossy, rich green needles are soft and dense making it easy to decorate and the strong branches will support your lights and decorations to create a stunning display. Excellent needle retention.

Fraser Fir: This tree has a gorgeous citrus scent, dark green foliage and strong branches. The Fraser Fir tends to grow with a compact, upright habit making it a good choice for smaller rooms. As with other firs, keep wellwatered to help retain the needles. Norway Spruce: The ‘traditional’ Christmas tree. Strong branches make for easy decorating, although the needles can tend to be fairly sharp and will drop, especially in heated rooms. Keep outside for as long as

possible, then bring in to an un-heated or cool room for best needle retention. At Nunton Christmas Trees 95% sold are Nordmann firs just because they are so great at lasting through into January, but the Fraser fir is gaining in popularity and is possibly even better for holding its needles. We do sell the Norway spruce as it is the ‘traditional’ tree, but you do have to expect to sweep up under it every day, but these do smell and look fantastic. Some final tips would be to know what size will fit in the space you want it to go, take your tape measure with you, and have a good look around all the trees where you go to get your tree. Nunton Christmas Trees have 40+ out at any one time, out of nets and standing up on pins, you can spin them around to really see what you’re buying, and the friendly staff will answer all your questions so you are confident you will end up with that perfect tree looking great all the way into the New Year.

New Grant Fund S

outh Kesteven District Council’s economic growth and regeneration company, InvestSK has launched a new funding programme to support heritage projects across South Kesteven.

Heritage Alive! grants of up to £4,000 are now available for projects which inspire, interpret and conserve heritage across the district. Three tiers of grants are available offering up to £500, £2,000 and £4,000 for successful applicants. The fund is open to any school, youth association, community group, place of worship, charity or constituted organisation within South Kesteven, which is delivering a relevant heritage project within the area. Steve Bowyer, chief executive of InvestSK, said: “Through InvestSK’s Heritage Alive! programme we’re delighted to launch this new grant fund which forms part of our work to celebrate and conserve local heritage. The grants are designed to be accessible and quick to process, and will offer a welcome financial boost to the district’s already fantastic heritage offer. “We hope to receive a range of applications across the whole of the South Kesteven district, from all three tiers of funds. Applications could include projects that improve accessibility to interpretation materials, like audio guides, handling exhibits

or video tours. Or they could fund the repair of a church window or roof, the installation of ramps or hearing loops, and the digitisation of documents or archives to make them available to the public, for example.” Councillor Matthew Lee, the Leader of South Kesteven District Council, said: “South Kesteven has a rich and deep heritage that we are rightly very proud of. Heritage is about the historic buildings in our district, but also the history and stories of local people too - a legacy which resonates with all of us today, bringing communities together and cementing our civic identity. “It is important that we conserve our heritage and utilise its power to support

regeneration across the district, as well as the vital resource it provides for learning. This new grant funding programme is an excellent way of providing vital support to conserve the remarkable heritage right across our district.” More details about the Heritage Alive! grants - including submission deadlines and application forms - are available from www.heritagealive.co.uk

Support for teen

to motivate others A teenager is taking to the road to tell others about his battle with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome thanks to support from his local community. South Kesteven District Councillors Jacky Smith and Ray Wootten have joined forces with Grantham Lions Club and Priory Ruskin Academy to help fund a professional public speaking course for Joe Hill. The 17-year-old from Grantham took part in Taz Thornton’s The Heart of Speaking two-day speaker training retreat and now works with people to improve their health and fitness levels. Cllr Smith, who is SKDC’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Communities, said: “It’s always good to hear about someone who is thriving following a setback and I am sure Joe will go on to help many other people through their own difficult times.” Cllr Wootten said: “Joe has really embraced this challenge and is making great strides. He has already been asked to speak at his school's year 11 assembly about exam stress and is fulfilling bookings at other venues too.”

The councillors contributed £165 each, while Grantham Lions gave £100 to add to the school’s own contribution. Godfrey Mackinder, a member of Grantham Lions, said: “We help youngsters as much as we can. When we heard about Joe we thought it would be a good project for him and something that would benefit others, too.” Joe, who was diagnosed with CFS aged 14, said: “The course was absolutely incredible. It helped give me knowledge about the best way to talk and structure the stories that I will be taking into schools and other workplaces to help others improve their mental and physical health. “Being diagnosed with CFS was probably the biggest challenge and lesson I have ever had, but it has also been the best lesson and I have really learned about myself, who I am and what I really care about.

“It was completely horrible at the time as I felt my life was over. However, being on the other side now I feel amazing and so proud. I am looking forward to my life just starting.” Heart of Speaking course leader Taz Thornton said: “Joe took to the stage like a natural and I have no doubt this awesome young man will be wowing audiences up and down the country with his messages.” Mum Haley added: “He has gained so much from this. His confidence and belief in the power of his story has exceeded his expectations. He was very warmly received by all the members, who were incredibly impressed at his maturity for his age.”

T

he party season is upon us. So take some time out of your busy schedule and treat yourself to a pampering to ensure you’ll be looking your best at the festive celebrations.

Add a bit of

SPARKLE Whether it’s a work party or an evening out with friends or family, Christmas is usually the busiest time in our calendar. We pressure ourselves to fit everyone into the diary who we must see before the holiday ends even if we don’t have the time. And, the added nerves of catching up with old friends or

Nail It

Getting your nails done for a party or an event is a great way to feel that extra sense of glamour, also suggesting a well-kept appearance. The benefit to getting your nails done at the salon is that they are long lasting, and will usually see you through the crazy three-week party period without chipping or breaking. When choosing which nail type is best for you, if you want a varnish that’s more durable with a glossy finish, a gel coat on top of your natural nails is a great option. False nails can also look sophisticated – a gel top coat on acrylic nails is more long lasting than standard varnish, but is more of a statement look rather than natural. Try a shimmering shade for the festive season. The nail shape you choose is also important, there’s no need to opt for a stiletto if you want a softer look, rounder shapes include oval and almond, with other squarer types like ballerina and square.

BMP446_Dec 18_1-25.indd 16

remaining professional with colleagues can prove stressful. Amongst all this meeting and greeting, dressing to impress is vital to suggest composure – a staple outfit, new hairdo, and a fresh coat of nail polish shows we have our lives together, even if our to-do lists suggest otherwise.

Silky skin

At this point in the year we’re not only fighting the elements, but tiredness too. Winter is a tough time for your skin, coping with colder temperatures combined with long hours in centrally-heated homes or offices can cause dryness and a dull complexion. To battle the winter blues hydration is key, to protect your skin from the inside out.

During such a busy and stressful time, it’s important to take a moment to ourselves, pampering is relaxing, fun, and beneficial to your Christmas party look. We’ve got some beauty hacks to beat the party season meltdowns, and to impress your colleagues, friends, and family with. If you’re a caffeine addict, try drinking a glass of water with each cup of coffee to counteract the dehydrating effects. A good quality day moisturiser and night cream is essential for keeping your skin supple in the harsher climate. Look out for products with SPF in to avoid photo-ageing at Christmas events. Exfoliation is also a great addition to your skin routine in the winter, as it speeds up the cell turnover that becomes more sluggish in the cold. If your skin is sensitive, opt for a gentle exfoliator. Pair your scrub with an in-shower moisturiser for after exfoliation, to lock in those natural oils.

21/11/2018 13:45:59

‘To avoid any last-minute orange disasters, make sure your skin is prepped for the occasion’

Strut your stuff

Get glowing

The last thing you want to notice is streaky orange when you shake hands at an office party, so make sure you apply with a mitt or glove – but don’t forget to carefully apply some to hands after for an all-over look. Give your tan enough time to dry before your event, any last minute applications run the risk of stained clothing if you’re in a rush. If applying product, yourself fills you with fear, opt for a spray tan for guaranteed results. Or start the sun beds weeks prior to events, for a real glow to make friends, colleagues, and family envious.

Perfect the up-do

For naturally curly hair a quality taming mousse is vital in harsher winds and rain, pump into locks before blow-drying to maintain your natural ringlets or waves without frizz. The method in which you blow-dry your hair can also seal the deal for your evening look. If you’re looking to pump up the volume, try switching to the cool setting after drying, flip your hair over and dry as you would normally for a couple of minutes – this tousles hair for extra fullness and will set any serum you’ve applied when wet. A glittery accessory is another great addition to a festive season look, especially for an up-do, to add extra sparkle.

If you’re getting your pins out for your Christmas party, or feel that your skin needs a pick me up from winter dreariness; fake tan can provide an extra glow that sits beautifully with sparkly Christmas accessories. To avoid any last-minute orange disasters however, make sure your skin is prepped for the occasion. Dry or patchy skin does not make a good base for the application of tanning products, so making sure your skin is exfoliated and moisturised especially on dryer areas like knees and elbows is vital for an even colour.

Keeping your locks tame in the winter is another tough battle, annoying flyaways or last minute frizz is the last thing you want for the Christmas party photo. To work against outside aggressors leaving your hair sleek for the evening event, invest in a hair serum to run through ends before drying, or in dry hair just before you walk out the door.

The festive party season warrants the wear of heels more than any other time of year. From stiletto to wedge, your feet will be on show more than usual, so it’s important not to neglect your heels and toes in the beauty regime. Use a pumice stone in the shower to exfoliate your heels, and apply a foot balm or cream after to avoid the appearance of cracks or dryness. Getting a pedicure at a salon with a gel varnish is a perfect way to avoid chipped polish, but if you’ve neglected your toes last minute - paint and let dry for one or two minutes naturally, then dip in cold/iced water to speed up the drying process. With Christmas parties having the potential to carry on until early hours, the high-heel hangover is definitely a factor to consider. High heel insoles are a great way of preventing the pain, allowing you to dance the night away for longer. Soaking feet and braving bare for a few hours the morning after is an ideal way to heal the wounds, but if you’re unlucky enough to have work the next day wear your comfiest flats to maximise comfort.

Unlike a lot of other charities, NOT ONE PENNY GIVEN goes on administration costs or to pay salaries. Lions are all volunteers, ordinary people from all walks of life, helping those less fortunate than ourselves, making the lives of those in need and our community a better place to live.

A lot of people have heard of the Lions but not sure what they do. Bourne Lions is a registered charity and part of Lions International, the world’s largest service organisation that has been around for over 100 years with just over 1.4 million members in 209 countries helping communities where they live.

Why do we hang stockings? And other odd Christmas traditions… Christmas is all about traditions, but why do we hang stockings, eat chocolate logs and drink eggnog (why would anyone drink eggnog?!)

STOCKINGS

Noddy Holder belting out, ‘Are you hanging up your stocking on the wall?’ is a Christmas tradition in itself. There’s no official explanation of why we hang socks up for Santa though. It probably derives from a tradition of leaving out hay-filled shoes on December 5, the eve of St. Nicholas’ feast day. Children would wake to discover that the hay they left for St. Nick’s donkey had been replaced with treats or coins.

SNACKS FOR SANTA

Whether it’s milk and a chocolate digestive or sherry and mince pie, when we leave goodies for Father Christmas we’re possibly participating in a tradition that some scholars date back to ancient Norse mythology! According to legend, Odin had an eight-legged horse named Sleipnir. Kids would leave treats for Sleipnir, hoping that Odin would favour them with gifts in return.

CAROLLING

You might suppose this is a centuries-old tradition but although the songs go back hundreds of years, visiting neighbours to bid them good luck and good cheer by singing for them didn’t happen until the Victorian era.

EVERGREEN DECORATIONS

Before Christianity people decorated their homes with evergreens in the winter as a reminder that spring would return. Christians adopted the tradition and decorated evergreen trees with apples to represent the Garden of Eden. The practice really took off when the public learned that Queen Victoria had a decorated Christmas tree as a nod to her German husband’s heritage.

THE YULE LOG

Yule logs also predate Christianity. As part of winter solstice celebrations, Gaels and Celts burned logs decorated with holly, ivy, and pine cones to cleanse themselves of the past year and welcome the next one. The practice changed over time and eventually edible representations of the log appeared, which is why we eat chocolate logs today!

EGGNOG

Surely the most revolting of traditions. However, historians agree that ‘nog’ was probably inspired by a medieval drink called ‘posset’, a milky drink made with eggs, milk, and sometimes figs or sherry. These were all pricey ingredients, so it was a bit of status symbol to offer it to guests. No-one seems to know for sure why it’s called ‘nog’, but

it maybe from the old word ‘noggin’ which was slang for a wooden cup.

MISTLETOE

This was associated with fertility and vitality by Celtic Druids because it blossomed even during the most frigid winters. Quite how we got from that kissing under the mistletoe is a mystery, but we do know that it began in the 18th Century and started with guests kissing the hand of their host under the mistletoe, then became progressively more personal over the decades that followed!

ADVENT CALENDARS The modern advent calendar, with its little doors containing sweets or small gifts, began with Gerhard Lang in the early 1900s. His inspiration was a calendar that his mother made for him when he was a child, featuring 24 coloured pictures attached to a piece of cardboard.

CHRISTMAS CARDS

In these days of high postage costs, texts and emails, plus more environmental awareness this tradition may be at risk of dying out. Christmas cards are a surprisingly recent tradition anyway, with the first formal card only hitting shelves in 1843.

Preventing loneliness PART 1

L

oneliness is an epidemic. The launch of the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness report marks a significant moment in our ambition to end this looming social crisis. As we have long known, loneliness can have devastating health impacts, and the combination of loneliness and winter is highly dangerous for older people.

Loneliness and isolation is one of the most significant and serious issues facing older people. The health impacts of loneliness are devastating; it is as bad for you as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and worse for you than obesity. Lonely people are more likely to develop depression, heart disease, and dementia. The strain that this puts on our health services is clear but what can we do to make a difference for those suffering and how do we reach them? NHS Choices has some really good advice. Even if you live alone and find it hard to get out, there are ways to overcome loneliness. Someone who is lonely probably finds it hard to reach out. There is a stigma surrounding loneliness, and older people tend not to ask for help for lots of reasons. Here are ways for older people to connect with others and feel useful and appreciated again. Keep in touch by phone: Having a chat with a friend or relative over the phone can really help. Or you can call The Silver Line, a free helpline for older people set up by Esther Rantzen, on 0800 4 70 80 90. You can also call Independent Age on 0800 319 6789, Age UK on 0800 169 2081, or Friends of the Elderly on 020 7730 8263 to receive a weekly or fortnightly friendship call from a volunteer who enjoys talking to older people. Learn to love computers: If your friends and family live far away, a good way to stay in touch, especially with grandchildren, is by using a personal computer or tablet (a handheld computer). You can share emails and photos with family and friends, have free video chats using services such as Skype, FaceTime or Viber, and make new online ‘friends’ or reconnect with old friends on social media sites such as Facebook or Twitter and website forums. Libraries and community centres often hold regular training courses for older people to learn basic computer skills – as well as being a good place to meet and spend time with others in their own right. Local branches of Age UK run classes in computing to help older people get to grips with smartphones, tablet computers and email.

Evergreen Care Trust is a charity providing practical and supportive services for older people in the Stamford, Bourne and Deeping areas. For more information go to www.evergreencare.org.uk or call 01780 765900

Recipe for

a light Christmas! W

hile Christmas ‘tis the season to be jolly, lots of people find the festive period can leave them feeling far from merry about their weight. And evidence suggests it takes up to three months to lose any weight gained between November and January.

However, Bourne Slimming World Consultants Dana, Jenny and Mel says there’s no need to give up on Christmas cheer this year because you’re stressed about your weight and, thanks to a delicious, healthy recipe book they have got lots of tempting and tasty ideas to share. A Slimming World Christmas will show people how to enjoy a super-slimming seasonal spread so they can keep their weight loss on track and look forward to a lighter, brighter new year. It features more than 60 recipes to help slimmers dish up a very happy – and delicious – Christmas, including traditional festive dishes, Christmas-party platters and great ideas for leftovers. Dana Petherick who runs the Monday evening Slimming World group, says: “Christmas day is centred around food and sitting down to a satisfying, delicious meal with your loved ones. Slimmers might think that they can’t enjoy turkey with all the trimmings but, as this book shows, by making just a few small changes to the way you prepare and cook your dishes you can enjoy all your festive favourites without gaining pounds.” When it comes to catering for the ‘big day’, A Slimming World Christmas includes starters, mains, sides and sweets – think Deluxe prawn cocktail, Roast turkey with Hedgehog potatoes and Braised red cabbage, followed by Cherry Christmas trifles. And the clever book includes a pick ’n’ mix menu which will enable even novice cooks to create a fabulous three-course menu in just 60 minutes – what greater gift could a Christmas-day chef ask for? “Even though Christmas is just one day, we know it has a habit of lasting the whole of December which can bring additional challenges for slimmers. A Slimming World Christmas is also bursting with

festive bakes such as Star biscuits and Mince tarts, tempting seasonal tipples to get the party started like Mulled Wine and Lime Spritzers, and clever ways to give leftovers a lift from Quick Christmas curry to Turkey risotto, making it a Christmas cracker of a companion for anyone wanting to manage their weight all December long,” adds Jenny Summers, consultant for Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning groups. Each of the recipes has been created to work with Slimming World’s Food Optimising healthy eating plan, which is based on the science of energy density and satiety meaning slimmers can fill up on healthy, everyday foods that are low in

calories yet satisfying. Foods like fruit and veg, pasta and potatoes, lean meat and fish can be enjoyed freely, while slimmers can still have measured portions of the foods other diets forbid – meaning they don’t have to miss out at Christmas or on any occasion! Mel, consultant for the Tuesday morning group, says: “Paired with the care, friendship and shared ideas that they’ll find at the Bourne Slimming World groups, A Slimming World Christmas really will help people to make their festive weight loss wishes come true. Everyone’s welcome at our groups every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. At the Darby and Joan Hall and Bourne Abbey Church Hall.

Add cold water MAKES 32 until the mixture is wet enough to mix READY IN 45 MINUTES, into a ball that leaves the sides of the PLUS CHILLING AND COOLING bowl clean. Chill for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 190°C/Fan 170°C/ Gas 5 and lightly spray 32 bun tin holes with low calorie cooking spray. Sprinkle the reserved flour over a work surface then roll out the pastry thinly. Cut out 32 rounds with a 7.5cm fluted cutter and use to line the bun tin holes. Reserve the trimmings to make the pastry stars. Divide the mincemeat between the pastry cases, using about half a tablespoon for each one. Roll out the remaining pastry trimmings and make some little stars with a cutter. Use these to decorate the tops of the tarts. Bake for 15 minutes or until the pastry is crisp and lightly coloured, then leave to cool on a wire rack. Dust with a light sprinkling of icing sugar if desired.

T

he sight of Christmas leftovers fills us with content. Despite the initial ‘I’m too full’ denial, they often taste just as good if not better than the dinner itself. Just when you thought you couldn’t possibly fit in another bite, the comforting scent of bubble and squeak rises from the pan to tempt our taste buds. The cheeseboard may be the last thing you want after the second helping of Christmas Pud, yet the mentality of ‘waste not want not’ stands deeply within us, the Stilton’s staring and it’s hard to say no. But why stick to the traditional turkey sandwiches when it comes to our chosen bird? The British Turkey Information Service at www.britishturkey.co.uk not only provide useful tips on how to prepare your turkey for the big day, but also offer some inventive leftover recipes that will inspire us all to get creative. Here are some of the recipes we found most appealing, and a December Plan to help you get organised.

LEFTOVERS TURKEY ENCHILADAS BY PHIL VICKERY

Serves: 4

Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 30 mins

Ingredients

• 350g lean British turkey mince • 2 tbsp any oil, plus extra for greasing • 2 small onions, chopped • 2 cloves garlic, chopped • 400g can chopped tomatoes in juice • 200ml water • 10g vegetable stock cube • ¼ tsp chilli powder • 1 tsp dried oregano • 8 small soft tortillas or pliable corn tortillas • 200g Cheddar cheese, grated • 150ml reduced-fat sour cream

chilli, oregano and turkey mince. Mix really well then simmer for 15 minutes. (The mix needs to be quite firm, so it makes it easier to roll, but not too thick). Once thickened, season well with salt and set aside half of the mixture. Lay out the tortillas and divide the cheese into two. Place a little of one half of the turkey mix onto one of the tortillas, then add a little of one half of the cheese. Roll up and place into the prepared dish. Repeat until all the tortillas have been used up. The tighter you can pack them the better. SHREDDED TURKEY SALAD WITH FRESH MINT, MISO KALE, FLAKED ALMONDS, AVOCADO AND POMEGRANATE BY MADELINE SHAW Serves: 2

Preparation time: 10 mins Cooking time: 20 mins

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons miso paste • 1 tablespoon honey • 1 tablespoon sesame oil • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar or rice wine • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice • 3 tablespoons olive oil • Sea salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 50g of kale • 2 British turkey breasts • 1 tbsp of butter or coconut oil • 30g of toasted flaked almonds • ½ pomegranate • 1 avocado • 2 tbsp of freshly chopped mint

BMP446_Dec 18_26-51.indd 28

Method

Add the miso, honey, sesame oil, vinegar and lemon juice to a medium bowl, whisking to combine. In a slow, steady stream, whisk in olive oil until emulsified. Season to taste with salt and black pepper. Finely chop the kale into thin slithers and place in a large bowl, and drizzle over ¾ of the dressing. Using your hands, work the vinaigrette throughout the greens, tossing and massaging for 3 minutes until the kale wilts. The leaves should be glistening with vinaigrette, not swimming in it. Leave this to the side while you make the rest of the salad. Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a large pan. Season the turkey with salt and pepper and pan roast for 6 minutes each side until cooked through. Leave to the side to cool. Cut the avocado in chunks and dip in the rest of the dressing. Mix the avocado with the kale. Remove the pomegranate seeds and mix with the salad. Shred the turkey and mix in with the salad, throw over the flaked almond and freshly chopped mint and serve.

and brush with olive oil. Place one turkey breast in the centre, cut side up and spread with the stuffing, pressing it down in an even layer. Lay the second breast on top, cut side down. Wrap the foil around the turkey, folding the edges over to make a tight seal. Lift into a shallow roasting tin and cook in the oven for 1¼ hours. Leave to cool before unwrapping the turkey. Roll out about one-third of the pastry to an oblong, lift on to a baking sheet and place the turkey in the centre – the pastry should be large enough to leave a border of about 2.5cm/1in all around. Roll out the rest of the pastry large enough to cover the turkey, brushing the pastry edges with milk or beaten egg and pressing them together to seal. Decorate the parcel with any pastry trimmings, brushing these with milk or beaten egg to fix in place. Chill for 30 minutes or until ready to cook. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Brush the pastry with milk or beaten egg to glaze and bake for about 25 minutes or until puffed and golden brown. Serve with a selection of vegetables. Tip: when cooking the pastry-wrapped turkey, use a baking sheet with a lip or a shallow roasting tin to prevent any juices that run out burning on the bottom of the oven.

CHRISTMAS CHEER

in a Glass W

ith Christmas just around the corner, many cooks are already planning their festive menus. Will it be the traditional turkey and all the trimmings, or perhaps, roast goose or beef ? Whatever your choice, the good news is that all these meats are exceptionally wine friendly. With the exception of beef, which really, demands a full bodied red, the other meat choices all will go equally well with red or white wine. For most people, the day starts with something sparking, perhaps as a bucks fizz instead of plain orange juice, or to add decadence and a sense of occasion to smoked salmon for breakfast. Prosecco has become such a favourite for many people but I really don’t subscribe to this fashion. At its best, Prosecco is a quaffable train journey mood-maker, enroute to a show with friends, but in the main, it is one dimensional, overly sweet and lacking in flavour. If cost is a consideration, you would be far better off with Cava, which is made in the Champagne method and is actually a serious wine of noteworthy quality. Of course, if you can afford a little more, then go for Champagne or English Sparking wine. Champagne has to have had a certain minimum period of aging in bottle to satisfy the regulations and it is this that gives it its characteristic biscuity, toasty, brioche notes but as with so many things in life, it spans a vast quality

spectrum. Many bulk-produced examples are heavily discounted in supermarkets around Christmas and should be easily found at under £20 per bottle. They will be perfectly serviceable, if a little unambitious. Premier Cru, Grand Cru, and grower champagnes command a premium, and rightly so, and will cost around £40 for a Grand Marque staple, such as Bollinger, Taittenger or Verve Cliquot, right up to over £120 per bottle for the very finest wines, including Crystal, Dom Perignon and Krug. English Sparkling wine can be every bit as good as Champagne but because of higher production costs and lower relative volume produced, means these wines cannot compete with the cheapest Champagnes on price. However, you should be able to find very good wines from the likes of Ridgeview, Chapel Down and, if you want to amuse the children, Breaky Bottom, all for around £25 and the pinnacle in my view, Nytimber, at around £35 per bottle. These are exceptional sparkling wines and will grace any table. We shall be having the Nytimber NV with breakfast and Krug Grand Cuvee throughout the day. Mid morning, catching up with old classics of Dads Army and the Two Ronnies, or during present opening, a glass of sherry with roasted almonds will really hit the spot. Banish all thoughts of Granny’s sweet Bristol Cream, go for La Gitana’s Fino or Manzanilla, available widely in all supermarkets at around £10 per bottle. It’s bone dry, crisp and clear, yeasty, nutty and salty and a great aperitif.

Finally, the main event arrives and with it, the huge sense of occasion. Christmas lunch should be well and truly matched by your choice of wines. In the case of turkey, the meat itself is not overly flavoursome. It is the delight provided by the rich sauces, the stuffing and the accompanying pigs in blankets where your taste buds are nourished. Goose on the other hand, brims with deep, fatty, full-throttle savour. What both dishes have in common is richness and weight and it is vital your white wines have enough oomph to stand up to these flavours and provide complimentary freshness. My personal favourite would be white Burgundy and particularly the more rounded and supple examples from communes including Meursault and Chassagne Montrachet. A bit of bottle aging will allow wines to develop more complexity so try to find wines with at least three years old, longer if you can. These wines should have enough acidity to cut through the richness and fattiness and equally, have wonderful citrus and almond notes to compliment the flavours of the dish. White Burgundy, almost always, must be made from 100% Chardonnay. It is one of the most successful grape varieties in the world and you could select a similar wine from the New World, particularly Australia and South Africa. Wines from these alternative regions tend to be slightly more tropical than citrus and have riper, broader

flavours, which go equally well with Christmas fare. We shall be having the Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, Meursault, Les Perrieres, 1er Cru, 2008 at around £100 per bottle. If you prefer a red wine, and particularly so if you are having beef, then your choice is as broad as dad’s grin on discovering his gift this year is not socks! Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the least successful of the established international varieties (except with beef ) because high tannins do not go well with fatty foods. Low tannin, high acidity, ripe flavoured wines tend to be ideal partners so look out for wines dominated by Pinot Noir, Tempranillio or Grenache. Translated into regions this means (red) Burgundy, Rioja and the southern Rhone and their New World equivalents. Again, try to fine wines with some age as this allows the individual component parts to round out and harmonise and to develop complex flavours. There is so much choice but this year, I plan to show the 2001 Clos des Papes, Chateauneuf du Pape, at circa £80 per bottle. Finally, with Christmas pud or cheese, Port is quite simply delicious. If you can stretch to vintage port, the 1994’s are silky, raisined, perfumed and absolutely at a point. A good bottle will set you back £100 but a lower priced alternative, but one with equally huge pleasure, would be a good 10 or 20 year old tawny, from Taylors or Warre’s at around £20 to £40. You really will not be disappointed. Having a variety of lovely wines at Christmas is a real pleasure, whatever your budget. To toast the festive season with friends and family and to enhance the joy of the occasion is something to really treasure and wines, perhaps particularly sparkling wines, provide the perfect foil and I would urge everyone to push out the vinous boat as far as you can.

The Perfect

Cheeseboard HOW MUCH CHEESE?

CRACKERS

Allow about 100g-125g (3½-4oz) cheese per person if your cheeseboard is being served after a meal, or slightly more - 150g (5oz) per person if you’re serving it as a snack/light meal.

A good oat biscuit, cracker or artisan bread will complement the cheese. Add a chutney - look for unusual brands at farmers’ markets, and some apples or grapes.

WHICH CHEESE?

DRINKS

Three or four cheeses are enough more than that and there’s too much for the palate to enjoy. The cheeses should be different styles, textures and flavours. Cheddar, Stilton and Brie is a classic combination, as it mixes a hard, soft and a blue. Why not go totally British with a traditional West Country Farmhouse Cheddar matched with Cropwell Bishop, a wonderful robust blue, and maybe Bath Soft Cheese, which is gorgeously gooey and mushroomy in flavour. It’s nice to put one wild-card cheese on the board like a citrussy goat’s cheese or meaty smoked cheese like St James.

After a meal a sweet fortified white wine is always good. You could even try a whisky, or a gin and tonic. If the board is going to serve as a light meal, then beer or cider is a good choice.

E

A NOTE ON STORAGE Store in a cold room or the bottom of the fridge, wrapped in waxed paper if possible This allows the cheese to breathe. Let the cheese to come up to room temperature for about 20 minutes before serving for maximum flavour. By Tom Hancock

Top tips for the

Festive ROAST T

urkeys will be taking pride of place on thousands of tables on Christmas Day. Here is our advice on how to make sure this year the turkey is cooked to perfection. There is a wealth of advice about the best way of roasting a turkey – cooking times and extra touches will vary but the basic technique is always the same.

When you get your turkey home, remember to wash your hands and then remove all packaging Take out the giblets, remembering to check both cavities and place these in a covered bowl in the fridge. Pat turkey dry with kitchen towel and place it in or on something large enough to catch any juices then place on the lowest shelf in the fridge, well away from any ready-to-eat foods.

Ensure that your turkey is at room temperature before it goes into the oven

Even if this means leaving it out of the fridge overnight, but in a cool place where no pets can nibble at it.

Calculate your cooking time correctly

Many of us have been overcooking turkey for years. Allow 20 minutes per kg (NOT per lb) plus 90 minutes at 180°C (fan) / Gas Mark 5. Your turkey is cooked when the thickest part of the breast (AND the stuffing in the body cavity if applicable – see the next point) reads 74°C or above on a meat thermometer or cooking probe.

To stuff or not to stuff

It is safe to stuff either or both cavities as long as you allow additional cooking time for the extra weight of the stuffing. If you decide not to stuff your bird, then put in chunks of onion and some fresh herbs – sage, thyme, rosemary, a few garlic cloves if

BMP446_Dec 18_26-51.indd 35

you like and even an orange or lemon cut in half, just to add some extra flavour.

Season the skin lightly all over with salt and pepper You can baste the raw turkey with olive, rapeseed or other vegetable oil, or rub butter all over it, but if you follow the method below, the turkey produces enough of its own fat for basting.

Cook the turkey upside down Cook the turkey upside down, with the breast side down, for the first half of the cooking time.

Halfway through cooking, turn the turkey the right way up... ... and baste the breasts with pan juices or cover with streaky bacon. Pork leaf fat, which comes from the inside of a pig’s ribcage, is a good choice. Lay the thin sheet over the turkey breasts, securing with a couple of cocktail sticks. (Anyone who would like leaf fat for your turkey should order early as supplies are limited).

Remove bacon or remaining fat About 30 to 40 minutes before the end of the cooking time, remove bacon or remaining fat to allow the skin to colour and crisp.

make the gravy. Don’t forget to include this resting time when working out what time to put the turkey into the oven.

Make ‘proper’ turkey gravy with the giblets

This will make enough for 8 adults. Early Christmas morning, or Christmas Eve, make the stock. Put the giblets (but not the liver as this can make the gravy bitter) into a large pan with some black pepper, a bouquet garni, an onion peeled and halved, a carrot peeled and halved, a stick of celery and a couple of chopped bacon rashers. Cover with 1.5 litres of cold water. Bring to the boil, cover, lower the heat and simmer for a couple of hours. Strain into a large jug.

After removing the cooked turkey from its roasting pan, pour off the pan juices into another jug

Once this liquid has settled, skim the fat off the top with a tablespoon and discard. Put the tin on a low heat on the hob. In a separate bowl, mix the flour gradually with 4 or 5 tablespoons of the juice. When it is a smooth paste, put it back in the roasting pan and cook for a couple of minutes, stirring with a wooden or metal spoon to scrape up any bits from the bottom of the pan, keeping the heat low so that it doesn’t burn. Still stirring, gradually pour in about 800ml of your giblet stock, plus two good tablespoons of redcurrant jelly or cranberry sauce and slowly bring to the boil. Add more stock if the gravy is too thick. Lower the heat and allow to simmer for a few minutes and then serve.

Allow to rest after it is cooked The flavour and texture of any joint of meat or poultry improves greatly if it is allowed to rest after it is cooked, before carving. This allows the juices to be re-absorbed, making the meat succulent, tender and easy to carve. A turkey can quite happily rest for an hour, in a warm place, or covered with foil. This frees up oven space for must-haves like roast potatoes and allows plenty of time to

If you have opted for

a frozen turkey

then don’t forget to leave plenty of time for this to defrost completely before the big day. The Food Standards Agency has useful advice – see www.food.gov.uk

Vets4Pets Bourne 2 year anniversary Q&A December 2018

Vets4Pets Bourne has now been open for 2 years! Here we answer some interesting questions. What have been the most interesting cases you have seen since opening? We have seen a variety of different and interesting cases in the past 2 years. Some of the ones that spring to mind are the two cats that have sadly had to have a hind leg amputated due to road traffic incidents, a dog that had an encounter with a deer and came off worse and several cases of pets eating things that they shouldn’t, ranging from raisins, hot cross buns and lilies to a feminine hygiene product!

Do you have any seasonal advice for pet owners over the Christmas period? Yes, be aware of the usual toxic foods that are plentiful at this time. The common ones are chocolate, raisins, fruit cake and Christmas pudding as well as foreign materials such as tinsel, baubles, glass etc. Another thing to remember is that Christmas can be stressful for our pets too, help them by giving your animals somewhere quiet and safe to retreat to away from the family or visitors. It is also a good idea to keep them busy with tasty feeding cubes or toys. If your animals are nervous or anxious of new people, make your visitors aware, letting the animal come to them if they want but not to approach them.

What challenges have you faced in the two years since opening?

have the freedom of how we work and what we can provide.

As a new team the biggest challenge we faced was getting to know each other and how we work together to the best of our abilities to provide a high standard of care for our clients and their pets. The other challenge has been raising awareness of who we are, what we offer, what we stand for and the location of the practice. We hope that now we have been open two years and are building our lovely client base, that word is getting around.

Do you have any advice for owners looking for a new pet?

What is the best part of working in the veterinary industry? As a team we all trained for the same goal, to look after animals and improve their health and welfare. We pride ourselves on using our skill sets to keep your pets in tiptop condition. Our vet and nurse team went through rigorous training to get their veterinary degree and nursing diplomas and therefore, we are invested into this vocation. For me personally, my favourite part is knowing I had a small part in helping your pets onto their road to recovery, to know I made a difference and the reward of them going home better than when they came in.

What is the best part about setting up practice from the very beginning? The best part is getting to know the clients and their pets, we are with them from the beginning of their pet ownership journey until they say goodbye. We like the fact that we get to

Yes, do your research, time and time again, we have owners that are unfortunately mismatched with their pet and struggle to cope with their traits and needs. When conducting your research use recommended resources, steer away from forums as they can be based on opinion rather than fact. We would also recommend insurance, ensure it’s a lifelong policy and that as a pet owner you are aware of what it covers, unexpected vet bills can be expensive, but insurance provides that safety net. As well as the vet bills, don’t forget the general day to day costs of owning a pet need be taken into account, these include diet, housing, bedding, toys, preventative health care and kennels/cattery/dog walkers/groomers/pet sitters etc, it all adds up. According to the Money Advice Service in October 2018, the average cost of owning a dog or cat ranges from £16000 - £33000 over their lifetime and is therefore, definitely a conversation you need to have before you commit to being a pet owner.

What are your plans as a practice for 2019? We plan to continue to grow the practice whilst providing a high standard of care to the pets of Bourne and look forward to carrying on being active supporters of the local community.

PETS at Christmas Though Christmas is a fun time for humans, even we can feel overwhelmed. For our pets Christmas can be confusing, a bit scary and even dangerous. Here are the top reasons for emergency vet visits over the festive period, and how to avoid them. VOMITING AND DIARRHOEA Often a result of Rover helping himself to Christmas goodies; one year my brother’s beagle helped himself to our entire cheeseboard, with predictable gastrointestinal consequences! But sometimes it’s a result of him being fed too many treats or rich food. Ask visitors to refrain from feeding your pets unless they have permission, and keep all festive food out of reach!

CHOCOLATE Dark chocolate is poisonous to dogs so seek advice immediately if you suspect that’s what he’s eaten.

LACERATIONS OR BITES When family members or guests bring their pet, bear in mind your dog or cat will see this as an intrusion into their territory, and some animals are very territorial indeed. Don’t leave unfamiliar animals alone together, even if they seem to be tolerating each other. In severe cases enmity separate rooms might be in order. If a guest brings

a dog and your kids own a treasured hamster or guinea pig keep the small furry being well out of danger; preferably put the cage on a high shelf.

SOFT TISSUE TRAUMA Dogs and cats can be stepped on, have things dropped on them, or be hit by cars while running around on the drive as visitors arrive. If Grandma trips over your Chihuahua BOTH might end up in casualty so keep an eye on pets at all times.

FOREIGN BODY INGESTION The beagle who ate the cheeseboard ate the cheese AND most of the board. Some pets will eat anything. Christmas baubles, lights tinsel and small toys. Ask guests not to leave things on the floor and keep a watchful eye on Rover. If he’s quietly in a corner chewing something, check it’s not Grandma’s spectacles, or false teeth!

Running &Fitness Coach Christmas is approaching

C

hristmas is approaching, and December can be a whirlwind of parties, over indulgence, shopping and family visits that can put your running routine on the back burner and you can easily get squeezed out and become quite low down on the priority list. Time can be against you as you ensure that everyone else is ok and you think that you have no time left for you.

But do you just think that you lack time or is this just an excuse as it can be the biggest barrier to getting in a run or running as much as you might like. By doing a little bit of forward planning and picking strategies that work for you, you could find that during the month of December your running might not take as much of a hit as you think. Getting over mental hurdles when life is busy can stop you getting out of the front door and running can then become stressful and not a stress release. You may feel rubbish if you are on a consistent conveyer belt of parties, late nights and over indulgence. This can lead to self-doubt as the time between running grows longer and longer. Self-doubt can lead to negative thinking and your confidence could take a nose dive. Here are my top tips for ensuring your month of December does not turn into a running disaster. 44 / www.marketplacemagazine.co.uk

BMP446_Dec 18_26-51.indd 44

PLAN YOUR WEEK

CROSS TRAIN

Sit down with your diary on a Sunday night and draw up a realistic training schedule, what can you fit in before everyone else in the family take priority.

Take time off from running by varying your exercise routine when time is tight. This will help prevent your running muscles from becoming too strained and hopefully your motivation for running won’t become drained.

SET SHORT-TERM GOALS

Too many runners think too far ahead, and I know I like to have a plan but sometimes you can’t see the wood for the trees if there is too much going on. Set a weekly goal and make it specific: “run twice a week for the next one.” Then set another, and so on.

THINK AHEAD

Get your kit ready the night before. Even loosen your laces so your feet slide straight into your shoes. That way, you sit down and dress for battle quickly. No hunting around trying to find something clean to wear.

BE REALISTIC

Cut back on your running if you need to. But don’t throw in the towel because life gets busy. Ride these periods out and fit in a run of some kind – 15 minutes, 10 minutes or try cross-training. Then resume to a normal routine when you can. When your schedule implodes, short-term changes can stop you fretting your way into not heading out of the front door.

BE A BIT SELFISH

By giving your run a high priority, you boost your physical and emotional health, and live up to your obligation to your family to be healthy and happy.

BUT BE A BIT FLEXIBLE

Try not to stress about lost running time, just adapt and try something at home, download a quick 10-minute weight workout; you could use tins of soup as your weights.

HAVE FUN!

Enjoying a run greatly increases the likelihood that you’ll want to – and will – find time to do the next one, visualise yourself running with grace and posture with a big smile on your face and remember how good it felt to get out of the house. And also have fun during this festive time, try not to be too hard on yourself and accept that sometimes life is allowed to get in the way. By Verity Wright, www.runverity.com

Christmas and

Strained Relationships By Sophie Personne

U

nfortunately, not all relationships work nor can be saved, as the time spent ignoring the issues can be extremely damaging in the long run, but it is at times like Christmas that it often comes to light more, and it can be a particularly stressful time for those who are already feeling unhappy, as spending so much time together will highlight the problems. We then wake up on Boxing Day wondering how we can carry on and go through it. Interestingly, the first Monday back to work after the festive break has been dubbed ‘Divorce Monday’ by law practices. So, what should you do? First of all, you need to ascertain how long the issues have been going on for and establish exactly what’s not working anymore. Some of what you see as a problem might actually be a response to your own behaviour or your partner may not even realise that they are doing something that you are deeply unhappy about. We often know that there is a problem, but we put it at the back of our minds. We try and make do, we put on a front because after all, life isn’t that bad, is it? But we unconsciously know that we are kidding ourselves. We are in limbo. We are waiting for better times to come and they just don’t. We become resentful, and maybe a bit jealous of those who seem to have it all too. It can make us a tad bitter but also

very sad indeed, and it is the sadness that is often the most difficult to deal with, as it can easily turn to anger. This is why there are often arguments at Christmas, as they would have been festering for a while. Once you recognise that there is a genuine problem, you have taken the first step towards acceptance, which is also the hardest. It is more of an unconscious acknowledgement to start off with, as it can be quite difficult to admit to yourself. There is an internal battle going on, which is totally normal and a very human reaction. It hurts to concede that there is something wrong but once we have, we want to ‘regain control’. Until then, we are just in a state of delusion or self-deception, failing to recognise the reality of what is really happening.

It can be a very painful process to go through, especially as we don’t always feel we can talk about it. After all, what we really want especially at this time of year, is that special someone to be by our side and be happy, so it can make us even more frustrated by the situation. We feel like we deserve and should be getting more… Why can’t we have it all? The thing is, and whichever way this is going to go, you need to talk with your partner in a constructive manner, as opposed to just voicing unhelpful generalisations. Yes, it’s obvious but you would be amazed how many people skip that important step. The best way is to be honest and not come from a place of blame. They deserve it and so do you. Breaking up does not have to be the only conclusion that you come to but it’s worth bearing in mind that it is ok to do so if the relationship has run its course. It might be the best outcome for you both. So, if you feel unhappy this Christmas, address it. Burying your head in the sand will only make it worse and drag out a situation that could still be resolved…

December in the GARDEN

Debbie Cooke

W

ell here we are again, rapidly hurtling towards Christmas and my last garden ramblings of the year. If you been following my series of articles this year, you’ll be aware that I’ve been focussing on the use of ‘Themes’. I’ve covered a different style of garden each month with tips on ‘Getting the Look!’ WHY ARE THEMES IMPORTANT?

Using a theme will give your garden an identity which will help to create a sense of harmony. Everything will have a feeling of belonging to the bigger picture. This makes choosing plants, materials, pots, ornaments and other garden features easier. So what else could I end the year on but ‘Winter Gardens’. Just because the weather is grey, it doesn’t mean your garden has to be dull!

The Winter Garden!

The Cambridge Botanical Garden has a entire area dedicated to a Winter Garden but most of us are not blessed with that much space. If a large part of your garden is visible from the house it is even more important to have it looking good all year round. Seasonal interest using plants is important but a good Strong Ground Layout and well placed Structural Elements are essential to help your garden stay looking good even in the depths of winter. Try using plants such as trees, standard roses and evergreens. Man made objects like obelisks, pergolas, pots, ornaments and even garden buildings can help to provide the bones of the garden. Focal points: These structural elements can also act as focal points so align them with windows and seating areas so you have an interesting view from everywhere you rest. Once you have the bones right then you can add all the blousy stuff to fill in around them. Plants that come into their own in winter often don’t look much for the rest of the year so in a small garden they need to be interspersed with plants for other seasons. Place them carefully for the best effect. You can create interest in your borders with a variety of Leaves, Bark, Stems Seeds and Berries. If you are looking for flowers that will take you through the winter months here are a few of my favourites. How many of these do you already grow?

Mahonia

MY TOP 10 FLOWERS FOR THE WINTER GARDEN:

Mahonia (Oregon Grape) November to March. It’s evergreen, has flowers of bright yellow and a sweet honey fragrance that will stop you in your tracks. These are followed by blue-black berries in some species. Viburnums have it all. Viburnum bodnantense ‘Dawn’ fragrant, easy shrub H&S 3m (10ft) deciduous will flower from November to March Sarcococca confusa (Christmas Box) see plant of the month. Helleborus niger is white and is traditionally known as the ‘Christmas Rose’ although its performance on time depends on the weather. Flowers from as early as November through to February. Prunus x subhirtilla ‘Autumnalis’ November to March Cherry blossom in the winter. How could that not cheer you up on a grey January day?

Helleborus niger Jasminum nudiflorum winter jasmine January to March AGM H&S 3m (10ft) It can provide 10 weeks of winter sunshine but can look scruffy. It is best grown through another plant. Helleborus argutifolius the Corsican Hellebore. This shows how Hellebores are so important for early flying insects. Galanthus Snowdrops and Eranthis hyemalis (Winter aconite) typically flower in February. They vie for position to see who will be first to flower. And last but by no means least Primroses, the harbingers of spring. Primroses and other more ornamental varieties of Primula will often flower throughout winter if the

PLANT OF THE MONTH

SARCOCOCCA CONFUSA (also known as Christmas Box)

Snowdrops and Winter aconites I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for taking the time to read my articles throughout the year and for the lovely feedback that I’ve received. May I wish you all a... Primroses in snow weather isn’t too severe. The colourful ones are excellent in pots.

“Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year”

Many of these plants are skin irritants or toxic if eaten. Please, always read the label and exercise caution with any plant that you are not totally familiar with. I hope you enjoy looking out on your very own Winter Wonderland!

Jobs to do in December IN THE FLOWER GARDEN

• Renewal prune overgrown shrubs and climbers and renovate deciduous hedges. • Prune ornamental vines now. • Remove diseased leaves from under roses to reduce the risk of re-infecting.

IN THE VEGETABLE GARDEN

• Cover winter Brassicas with netting to prevent Pigeons enjoying them. • Plant bare root fruit canes now. • Lift and Divide established clumps of Rhubarb to reinvigorate them.

IN THE GREENHOUSE

• Remove dead leaves from plants as they can decay and spread disease. • Check heaters and thermostats regularly. • Ventilating on warmer days will also help to reduce the risk of disease.

POTS AND CONTAINERS

• Plant seasonal tubs or hanging baskets to view from indoors or to welcome your guests at Christmas.

BMP446_Dec 18_26-51.indd 49

Sarcococca confusa, also known as Christmas Box, is a good all rounder. It is evergreen, has the most deliciously fragrant white flowers which in some species are followed by fruits red, black or purple. Grow it near an entrance to make the most of the fragrance from December to March. S. hookeriana var. digyma and S. hookeriana. Var. humilis are more compact.

• Prevent pot and plant damage by ensuring your pots are in a sheltered spot and not standing in puddles.

LAWN CARE:

• Keep off the grass whenever possible. • Remove fallen leaves from lawns promptly to prevent damage and disease. Use to make leaf mould. • Carry out repairs if conditions are favourable.

POND:

• Ensure that the pond is never allowed to completely freeze over as this creates a build up of toxic gasses which can kill fish and wildlife.

LOOKING AFTER THE WILDLIFE:

High energy foods and a fresh, unfrozen supply of water are a life line during the winter months. By placing plants with seeds and berries for the birds, bird feeders and bird baths in full view from the house, you will definitely be improving the view of your Winter Garden.

Around the world for

TRADITIONAL FESTIVITIES

Sweat out the season in Estonia

Christmas Eve is considered the most sacred, and Estonians really know how to detox before the festive feasting begins, as one of their traditions is bathing in a sauna before mass. With it being one of the oldest holiday traditions, these steam baths may not seem hugely appealing to participate in with all your family members, but undoubtedly it is an icebreaker for those awkward distant relative conversations. Despite Estonians also claiming that their Joulund (Christmas) has no connection with Christianity, another tradition involves bringing home genuine ‘Christmas straw’ which supposedly symbolises the manger. Bathing in a smoke sauna before mass is an Estonian tradition

BMP446_Dec 18_52-68.indd 54

I

f you’ve wondered how other countries around the world celebrate Christmas, here is a selection of some weird and wonderful traditions from shoe-tossing to rollerblading! Reykjavik at Christmas

Santa’s competition in Iceland

If you thought one gift-bearing visitor was enough to meet your children’s needs, think again with the Icelandic tradition. From a young age children are taught about an ogress named Grýla, a part troll part animal character living in the mountains with her 13 mischievous sons, her third husband, and black cat. Each year her and her sons come down from the mountains, and for the 13 days leading up to Christmas children receive either sweets or rotten potatoes from each Yule Lad, dependant on how they’ve behaved. Iceland’s Christmas festivities begin on the 23rd December and end on Epiphany, January 6th.

Posada parties in Mexico

Mexicans combine religious traditions with party performances during the festive season. Posada processions represent Mary’s plight for shelter to give birth to Jesus, as Posada means inn or shelter in Spanish. Mexican children re-enact the search for shelter with candles, clay figures, and songs. Every night a different house holds the Posada party, when they eventually find a place to stay, the success is celebrated with food, fireworks, and games. One of the most popular games played during the Posada parties is the piñata. On the final performance on Christmas Eve, a baby Jesus is placed in the manger before midnight mass. Piñatas are popular at Posada parties

Rollerblading sweeps the streets of Caracas

A festive mood in the Old Town Square, Prague

Get your skates on in Caracas, Venezuela

The capital city of Venezuela travels to Christmas Mass in style, as the unconventional tradition of rollerblading sweeps the streets, blocking off roads to allow the whole city of church-goers to skate to early morning mass. Children take the tradition on with serious dedication, tying one end of a shoelace to their toe whilst hanging the other end out the window, allowing the early morning skaters to give a friendly pull to the lace as they pass – what a wakeup call! During the festive period that begins on December 16th, Venezuelans also light firecrackers and ring bells to wake worshippers in the early hours of the morning ready for mass.

Romantic fates sealed in the Czech Republic

Single folk in the Czech Republic who are looking for love set all their hopes on the tradition of shoe-tossing during Christmas Day. The shoe determines just how successful their love life will be during the following year - as women stand with their backs to the front door they toss the shoe over their shoulder. If the shoe lands pointing towards the door they will be married soon, if it doesn’t they have to patiently wait for more luck next year. A tradition with much more pressure than a simple kiss under the mistletoe!

A Christmas market in Frankfurt. Inset: Chocolate figures of Krampus and St Nicholas

St. Nicholas’s evil shadow in Germany

Not quite the Santa’s Little Helper you’d expect, the unnerving legendary figure Krampus is said to be the ‘Son of Hel’ in Norse mythology. Krampus has continued to frighten German children into behaving themselves before both St. Nicholas and Krampus come to visit, as they run the risk of being whipped and dragged into the demonic figures lair if they don’t – a questionable parenting tactic to say the least. December 6th holds two contrasting traditions for Germany’s children, with being both Nikolaustag meaning St. Nicolas Day where they await to see if their shoe or boot has been filled with rewards from the trusted St. Nic, whilst also being Krampusnacht or Krampus Night, where the fearsome figure comes to punish the bad. A unified front from both characters is sure to make kids think twice during the festive period in Germany.

Unusual festive delicacies in Greenland

Greenland is believed to be the home of Santa Claus

If you thought brussel sprouts were bad, Christmas cuisine in Greenland is sure to make you think twice. ‘Mattak’ is a delicacy consisting of whale skin with a strip of blubber inside. Supposedly tasting like coconut, the dish can sometimes become too chewy to taste like much at all. But aside from the unusual cuisine, Greenland is the hub of Christmas cheer for children as it’s believed that Mr Claus himself lives there in a place called Spraglebugten, with other traditions including illuminating houses with festive lights and children singing carols.

Nativity scenes

Nativity scenes and friendly witches in Italy

Celebrating Christmas is a lengthy affair in Italian tradition, covering several weeks from early December until the day of Epiphany on the 6th January. The iconic nativity scene derives from Italy, with St Francis renowned for creating the first nativity scene in 1223. Father Christmas, known as ‘Babbo Natale’ delivers gifts to children on Christmas Eve, but they can only be exchanged on January 6th – the day of Epiphany, the day after the good witch ‘Befana’ has made an evening delivery. Legend has it that she searches each house to find the ‘Christ child’, sweeping the year’s problems away with her broom as she goes. www.marketplacemagazine.co.uk / 55

With Christmas fast approaching we are able to give you some useful information on some of your consumer rights.

Return

faulty goods I

f something’s gone wrong with an item you’ve bought, you may be entitled to a refund, repair or replacement.

It doesn't matter whether you bought the item new or secondhand - you'll still have rights.

YOU’LL HAVE LEGAL RIGHTS IF THE ITEM YOU BOUGHT IS:

• broken or damaged ('not of satisfactory quality') • unusable (‘not fit for purpose’) • not what was advertised or doesn’t match the seller’s description

YOU WON’T HAVE ANY LEGAL RIGHTS IF:

• it was damaged by wear and tear, an accident or misuse • you knew about the fault before you bought the item • you’ve just changed your mind

WARRANTIES AND GUARANTEES ADD TO YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS. EACH ONE IS DIFFERENT, BUT THEY TEND TO BE USEFUL IF:

• something’s gone wrong after the first 6 months and you want a repair or replacement - it’s tricky to do this as you may have to prove you didn’t cause the problem • you bought an item abroad and the manufacturer is based in the UK • a trader’s gone out of business and there’s a problem with the goods or service they provided It may be easier to get your money back, a repair or replacement without using your warranty or guarantee. Find out if it’s easier to use your legal rights on faulty goods instead. It’s usually easier within the first 6 months. You have legal rights for up to 6 years if there’s a fault. You may want to use your warranty or guarantee if you think it’ll be easier for example, if you bought the item 7 months ago and your guarantee lasts for a year. Check your paperwork to find out how you make a claim. The warranty or guarantee could be on your receipt, in an email or given to you as a separate leaflet.

BMP446_Dec 18_52-68.indd 56

21/11/2018 15:34:09

THE PAPERWORK WILL ALSO SAY:

• how long the warranty or guarantee lasts for • what you’re entitled to, eg a refund, repair or replacement If you can’t find the guarantee or warranty, contact the seller or trader and ask if they have a copy or the manufacturer’s contact details.

WHEN YOU MAKE A CLAIM, YOU’LL USUALLY NEED:

• proof of purchase - usually a receipt showing where and when you bought the goods • details of what the problem is • a photocopy of the warranty or guarantee

IF SOMETHING YOU ORDERED HASN'T ARRIVED

If something you’ve ordered hasn't arrived, you should contact the seller to find out where it is. It’s the seller’s legal responsibility to make sure the item is delivered to you. They should chase the delivery company and let you know what’s happened to your item. If your item wasn't delivered to the location you agreed (eg it was left with your neighbour without your consent), it's the seller's legal responsibility to sort out the issue. If the item doesn't turn up, you’re legally entitled to a replacement or refund. You can write to the seller and ask them to deliver the item again. You should do this if the item wasn't delivered within a reasonable time or the item wasn't delivered by an agreed date. "Failure to deliver within a reasonable time and outside of the agreed deadline is considered to be a breach of contract. I am now making time of the essence and request the item be delivered within 14 days of receipt of this letter."

YOU CAN ASK FOR YOUR MONEY BACK IF YOU DON’T RECEIVE THE ITEM EITHER:

• within 30 days of buying it • on the date you agreed with the seller - if it was essential to receive it by then (eg for an event then or shortly after) If the seller refuses to give you your money back, you should put your complaint in writing - follow their complaints procedure if they have one.

IF THAT DOESN’T WORK YOU COULD: • contact their trade association - look on their website for this information, or contact them to ask • use an alternative dispute resolution scheme - it’s a way of solving disagreements without going to court, where a third party will mediate to try and reach a solution

IF YOU PAID BY DEBIT CARD

Contact your bank and say you want to use the ‘chargeback scheme’.

IF YOU PAID BY CREDIT CARD

If the item cost less than £100, you should contact your credit card company and say you want to use the ‘chargeback scheme’. If the item cost more than £100 but less than £30,000, contact your credit card company and say that you want to make a ‘section 75’ claim to get your money back.

The King orders every spinning wheel, in the kingdom, be destroyed. Eighteen years then pass and a young Prince Michael hears of a lady with rare beauty at the palace so he sets out to find who it is. He finally wins Princess Aurora’s hand in marriage but as promised by Carabosse on her 18th birthday Aurora pricks her finger and falls into a sleeping death. The Fairy Queen is summoned and changes the curse to not death but just in sleep until true loves kiss breaks the spell. The Fairy Queen then puts the whole kingdom to sleep for 100 years, except Prince Michael who she takes to her fairy kingdom where time stands still so he can return and wake his true love Aurora and marry her as intended. THEBOOK REVIEW

The Bedlam Stacks BY NATASHA PULLEY

If you like a novel that feels like a luxurious meal in a restaurant where you can enjoy each course at a slow pace, then this is the novel for you. This slow-burner is in no rush to reach its conclusion and invites you to indulge in the world of 19th century Peru. Pulley skilfully mixes facts and historical fiction with fantasy as the novel turns in a way that you don’t expect. It is 1859 and Merrick Tremayne is asked to undertake an expedition to Peru by the East India Company. As an ex-opium smuggler, and a gardener, they want him to supervise the search for cinchona trees. The bark of these trees produces quinine, a much sought-after treatment for malaria. Despite knowing that it is a suicide mission, since others have tried and failed, he agrees

to go to get away from his miserable life at home. Once in Peru he travels to a mysterious village, given the name Bedlam Stacks. Three large pillars of rock rise into the sky with homes and shops built on to the sides of them. And this is where fact (the expedition did take place, led by Clement Markham, who accompanies the fictitious Merrick) and historical fiction meets fantasy and you realise that the novel is not going where you thought it might. A line of salt that no one can cross, statues that move, and a priest with knowledge far beyond his years. What will Merrick discover, and will it ultimately be more valuable to him than the precious quinine? By Willow Coby

The Enchanted Wood BY ENID BLYTON

Enid Blyton is an author that most adults will be familiar with and now her books are finding a new generation of readers. Whilst not as well-known as her Famous Five series, or any of her boarding school series, this is nevertheless well loved and fondly remembered. Woods can be mysterious places, full of old trees. Some are older and bigger than others and one such tree is the Magic Faraway Tree. When siblings Joe, Frannie, and Beth move to the outskirts of the wood, they go exploring and discover the tree. Unable to see the top they decide to climb it and find that it is inhabited by many magical creatures. There is Silky the fairy, Dame Washalot who spends her time washing laundry and throwing the dirty water down the side of the tree, and

Moonface, a happy man with a face like the moon who befriends the children. At the very top of the tree is a ladder and here is the most magical thing about the tree. Each time that the children visit they can climb the ladder and visit a magical land from the Land of Birthdays to the Land of Do-As-You-Please. Some are pleasant, some are not, but whatever they are the children know that they must not stay too long lest the land moves on to another tree in another wood. Just as the children never know what they will find at the top of the tree, neither does the reader. All the reader knows is that adventure will be had, and their imagination ignited. By Willow Coby

The Couple Next Door BY SHARI LAPENA

Another major new talent to emerge in the last few years. Lapena has put herself at the forefront of the ‘domestic noir’ with this psychological narrative. It begins with an average dinner party, you are drawn into the scene, relationships and tensions. A couple leave their child to go next door, taking the baby monitor and checking in every half hour. Not enough to prevent a

nightmare unravelling. This is a psychological thriller that pulls you into the worst possible situation and drags you through a multitude of twists and turns. The tag line, ‘People are capable of almost anything’ really doesn’t prepare you for the shocking revelations within the pages. It leads you to question how well you know those around you and how much stress it takes to push people to the edge.

Holding

BY GRAHAM NORTON This is a fine debut novel from the TV host. A body is unearthed in a small Irish village and PJ Collins, the local policeman, must dig through the characters’ past to find the killer. This is an exciting plot set against the humdrum of village life. The characters are believable in their mundanity, the tone of their conversation, peppered with occasional profanity, secrets and gossip, is a joy to read.

The story is told with observational wit and flair but doesn’t rely too much on overplaying the Irish accent when reading. There are moments of levity and hilarity, all farcical but undeniably funny. If you’re a fan of the author, I highly recommend listening to the audio version that’s available as Norton’s narration brings the characters to life, full of lilt and accent.

The Whistler BY JOHN GRISHAM

Another legal blockbuster from the King of thriller writing. Grisham takes on corruption in the judiciary with his usual dramatic flair. A dishonest Judge, a young investigator and a whistle-blowing informant form the backbone of this story. Grisham never fails to deliver a first-class story and intense courtroom drama but this time he goes behind the scenes and delves into the social ills of the world we live in, examining injustice in the courtroom and beyond. A riveting read with a very strong female character, enjoyable, predictable and satisfying for any fan of American legal thrillers. www.marketplacemagazine.co.uk / 61
