In 1969 Don, Marge, Bart and Doug Johnson joined Holstein Canada, started their purebred herd and chose Belridge as their prefix, due to the farm’s setting on a ridge close to the town of Belhaven. They farmed together up until 1994 when Bart, Elsica, Doug and Debi formed a partnership. This partnership worked well and saw an increase in both milk production and cropland. Elsica passed away in 2014 but today Bart, his son, Greg, and daughter-in-law, Amanda, farm together and built a new compost pack barn with a swing eight parlour for 50 cows in 2011. Family is important at Belridge and Bart is proud of his four children, Chris, Kate (Andrew), Jolene (Bill) and Greg (Amanda) and his four grandchildren Ruby, Donnie, Abby and Willa. The Johnsons milk 52 cows (126 head total) with a 9,255 kg and 4.1 BF average and farm 475 acres of hay, corn, wheat and soybeans. Breeding decisions are based on type, health, fertility and components and notable cow families include Diane VG-87 6* 130,840 kg lifetime with 35 descendants in the herd; Tiffany EX-90-4E 1* 61,904kg 4.56 BF lifetime with 18 descendants in the herd; Cristy VG-85 1* 63,859 kg 3.9 BF to date (descending from Maeford Starbuck Christy Ex 17*) with 16 descendants in herd and Eva EX-3E 3* with 17 descendants. Breeding Strategy: We select mating based onBRAD type, health, and components. PAUL, THEA, & LIEKEfertility HULSOF

Hulsdale farms was started by John and Alieda Hulshof in 1958 shortly after they emigrated from Holland. Today the farm is owned and operated in partnership between Paul and Thea Hulshof and Brad and Lieke Hulshof. They currently milk 55 cows in a tie stall barn that was built in 2009 and crop 400 acres of alfalfa hay, corn, barley, oats, and soybeans. The milking herd is fed a complete TMR ration of corn silage, hayledge, dry hay, cracked corn, rolled oats and barley and a protein pellet. In 2011 they updated their calf and heifer housing, which has significantly reduced the herds’ age at first calving. The farm’s breeding strategy is to breed a balanced cow, with additional emphasis for type. For heifers, calving ease is also important. Sires being used are Doorman, Envious, Science P, Capital Gain, Upright, Elude, Novo, Cleveland Applicable and Adagio P. Current herd favourites at Hulsdale include Hulsdale Emperor Mystique EX-4E, Hulsdale Jasper Maude EX-91-2E, Hulsdale Toystory Blush EX-2E, Hulsdale B Windbrook Mahalo VG-88-3YR, Hulsdale LG Altona VG-85-1YR, Hulsdale B Doorman Monakea VG-2YR (+17 Conformation DGV) and Hulsdale B Science Malaki P (2911 GLPI, +15 Conformation DGV).

Onthehill Farm is a family farm operated since 1857 by the Reesor family. Paul, Ann, Chris and Matthew Reesor are all part of the daily running of the farm. The Reesors milk 50 cows in a tie-stall barn renovated in 2003 to increase cow comfort. Heifers and dry cows are housed in a tarp barn with a composting pack built in 2010. Cows are fed a TMR ration consisting of haylage, corn silage, high moisture corn, oats and barley and protein supplement. All forages and grains are grown on 225 acres of both owned and rented land. The main cow family in the herd is the Onthehill Edna Jet family, which 40 per cent of the herd traces back to. This family constantly produces long-lived and profitable cows with many different branches. Recently the breeding program has moved towards polled animals with an emphasis on building cow families. Currently 20 per cent of the herd is polled with animals sired by Doorman, Reginald, Fever and Overtime. Recently the farm has been included in the Rouge Urban National Park, thus protecting the farm and surrounding area from development.
JIM, CAROL, SCOTT, ANDREW LOCKIE LOCKMAR HOLSTEINS - & FAMILY
3236 Lockie Sideroad, Sutton
15ME, 10EX, 59VG, 21GP RHA 258-295-265
Lockmar Holsteins is a fifth-generation family farm owned by Jim and Carol Lockie, along with their sons, Scott and Andrew. First registering cows with Holstein Canada in 1974, it was a proud achievement to win their first Master Breeder in 2001 and follow it with a second win in 2015. The 75 milking cows are housed in a modern tunnel ventilated tie-stall barn and are fed with a TMR mix with haylage, corn silage, rolled high moisture corn and barley along with dry hay. 800 acres are cropped with corn, soybeans, wheat, barley and alfalfa being grown. The Lockies like cows with lots of capacity, well-attached udders and correct feet and legs. A perfect example of this is the Lily family. Starting with Lockmar Raider Jasmine EX, and her daughter, Lockmar Charles Lily (EX), there have been five generations of Excellent cows. Another notable family that has had a big impact on winning both Master Breeder shields stems from sisters Lockmar Ned Holly (VG-86) and Lockmar Ada Ileen (VG). Lockmar Holsteins is proud to have had Lockmar Fabulous Rennie nominated All-Canadian 4-H Junior calf and Lockmar Sidney Dorothy being named Reserve All-Canadian 4-H Summer Yearling.
