Editoriale _ Un territorio che in bicicletta è ancora tutto da scoprire Chi desidera ammirare le chiese romaniche sparse sul territorio dei due Almenno (San Salvatore e San Bartolomeo), a pochi chilometri da Bergamo, lo può fare anche, e molto comodamente, in bicicletta. E in questo caso non deve mancare una tappa al Museo del Falegname ad Almenno San Bartolomeo. Qui è esposta una bicicletta tutta in legno, un’opera d’ingegno perfettamente funzionante, che l’industriale Tino Sana, fondatore del museo, ha ideato e realizzato in omaggio alla sua grande passione: la bicicletta. Accanto a questo eccezionale veicolo si possono ammirare una Draisina, costruita nel 1816, considerata, pur non avendo ancora i pedali, l’antenata della moderna bicicletta, mentre altri esemplari raccontano la storia della bicicletta e la sua evoluzione. Un settore della grande sala è riservato ai cimeli del grande campione ciclistico Felice Gimondi, tra cui maglie, trofei e biciclette usate nelle sue vittoriose gare. La bicicletta è di casa a Bergamo e in provincia e ha un grande seguito tra gli appassionati dello sport sulle due ruote. Per questo abbiamo pensato di proporla ai turisti che desiderano conoscere il territorio bergamasco. A loro disposizione c’è una rete di piste ciclabili che spazia dalla città alla pianura, alle valli e che si snoda anche lungo i fiumi e attorno ai laghi. Con la bella stagione niente di meglio per trascorrere indimenticabili giornate all’aria aperta. A land which, by bike, is still waiting to be discovered Visitors wishing to admire the Romanesque churches dotted around the area of Almenno San Salvatore and Almenno San Bartolomeo, a few kilometres from Bergamo, can do so easily by bike and, at the same time, take in a visit to the Museo del Falegname (Carpentry Museum) in Almenno San Bartolomeo. This museum displays a bicycle made entirely of wood, a perfectly functioning work of genius, designed and made by the industrialist Tino Sana, founder of the museum, in homage to his great passion: the bicycle. Alongside this exceptional vehicle is a Draisina built in 1816 which, although without pedals, is considered the ancestor of the modern bicycle. Other examples in the museum tell the story of the bicycle and its evolution. One section of the great hall is dedicated to memorabilia of the great champion cyclist Felice Gimondi, including shirts, trophies and bicycles used in his victorious races. Cycling is a way of life in Bergamo and its province, and this sport on two wheels has a large following of enthusiasts in the area. It is for this reason that we have decided to propose cycling to tourists wishing to get to know Bergamo. There are a great many cycle paths which extend from the city to the plain and valleys, and meander along rivers and lakes. What better way to spend an unforgettable Spring day in the open air!

on le vie medievali della città sul colle e gli spazi ridotti dei borghi, Bergamo alta non sembra favorire molto l’utilizzo della bicicletta; eppure in molti vi ricorrono per spostarsi comodamente. Per i più sportivi e allenati c’è la bella salita al colle dove sorge la Bergamo antica oppure - ed è un po’ più impegnativa - quella che conduce al castello di San Vigilio, ben noto per i suoi splendidi panorami. La bicicletta è poi il veicolo ideale per andare alla scoperta della Bergamo meno conosciuta che si cela nel verde della sequenza ondulata che fa da corona alla città e sulla quale sorse il primo nucleo abitato. Fino al secolo scorso, attraverso i colli la campagna si saldava alla città stessa e dagli orti provenivano gli ortaggi e la frutta che rifornivano negozi e mercatini. Alcune coltivazioni continuano ancora oggi, come l’insalata nota come “scarola”, molto appetitosa e ricercata; in primavera, percorrendo le viuzze e le scalette che si estendono lungo i pendii si notano qua e là le fioriture di alberi da frutta, a testimonianza di antichi coltivi. Qua e là si scorgono anche ulivi e filari di vite. Un’oasi conservata e protetta dal Parco dei Colli che comprende anche il territorio di alcuni paesi confinanti con la città. I bergamaschi hanno sempre apprezzato la possibilità di compiere passeggiate tra il verde intenso. Proprio per soddisfare questa esigenza è nato negli

ith the medieval streets of its hilltop town and the confined spaces of its districts, Bergamo does not seem to very conducive to cycling, but many people use this method to get around easily. For those who are fit or sporty, there’s a good climb up the hill to upper Bergamo or, and this is somewhat challenging, up the road that leads to San Vigilio Castle, which is well known for its wonderful views. A bike is also the ideal vehicle for discovering lesser known Bergamo, hidden among the undulating green hills that surround the city and on which the first settlement was built. Up until the last century, the countryside extended right up to the edge of the city and the vegetable plots created in the fields yielded fruit and vegetables for the shops and markets. Some of these cultivated plots continue today and produce vegetables such as the well known “scarola” lettuce - very tasty and much in demand. In spring, along the small alleyways and flight of steps that run along the slopes, fruit trees in blossom provide further evidence of these ancient cultivations. There are also olive groves and rows of vines dotted here and there. This oasis is protected and conserved by the Parco dei Colli (Hills Park), which also includes the area around several towns that border the city. The Bergamask people have always appreciated the fact that they can take

anni scorsi una percorso riservato a pedoni e ciclisti che si snoda tra i luoghi più suggestivi dei colli offrendo inaspettate vedute della città antica. Come nel primo tratto che si raggiunge partendo da via Baioni e che si snoda lungo il percorso del torrente Morla. Sono solo poche decine di metri, ma sembra di fare un salto nel tempo. Qui espansione edilizia e traffico non esistono più. Appena al di là del corso d’acqua si estende una ampia fascia verdeggiante alla quale fa da cornice l’imponente bastionata delle mura che circonda l’alta città. Qui l’ambiente è ancora quello di quattro secoli fa quando Venezia le costruì: per garantirne la difesa, i fianchi della collina furono spianati e furono pure demoliti tutti gli edifici, case e cascine comprese, che potessero offrire riparo all’avvicinarsi di eventuali nemici.

A path was recently created - precisely to satisfy this need - for walkers and cyclists, which winds around the most beautiful parts of the hills and offers unexpected views of the old city. The first section begins in Via Baioni and follows the course of the Morla River. After only a few metres, you feel like you have stepped back in time: traffic and buildings no longer exist and, just beyond the river, a wide band of green countryside opens out before you, overlooked by the imposing fortification of the walls that surround the upper city. Here the area is as it was four centuries ago when Venice ordered the construction of the walls to defend the city, flattening the slopes in the process and demolishing any buildings - houses and farmsteads included - that could offer shelter to an approaching enemy.

Quasi tutto in piano il percorso, aperto a pedoni e ciclisti, si snoda tra i prati che fino a qualche decennio fa erano tutti intensamente coltivati. Alcuni toponimi, come Valverde, sembrano sottolineare le caratteristiche originali di questi luoghi. Salvo l’attraversamento di alcune vie poco trafficate, la pista si snoda alle spalle della città in un territorio il cui ambiente è tutelato dal Parco dei Colli di Bergamo. I baluardi delle mura lasciano poi il posto al bosco che copre il versante settentrionale delle colline mentre tutto attorno, senza toccare fortunatamente le belle distese verdi, dilaga la periferia urbana che si salda ai paesi limitrofi. Nell’intatta Valmarina spicca l’antico convento, che ora ospita la sede del Parco dei Colli di Bergamo e dove è ancora leggibile la struttura della chiesa romanica. Qui la ciclabile ha alcuni tratti più impegnativi dovendo superare alcuni dislivelli, ma sono facilmente superabili. Si prosegue tra le piante che d’estate offrono un piacevole riparo in direzione della propaggine ovest del sistema collinare, sul quale spicca il santuario di Sombreno che domina il corso del fiume Brembo. L’escursione può terminare qui, con la visita al santuario, costruito sul luogo di un’antica fortificazione, che si può raggiungere salendo per la carrareccia o attraverso sentieri. Ma la “greenway”, lunga in tutto una decina di chilometri, prosegue ancora contornando alla base il santuario e attraversando

The path, which is open to both walkers and cyclists, is almost entirely on flat ground and winds among fields that, until a few decades ago, were all intensely cultivated. Some place names, such as Valverde (Green Valley), seem to highlight the original features of these places. With the exception of a couple of places where you have to cross quiet roads, the path follows the side of the city through land that is protected by the Parco dei Colli (Hills Park) of Bergamo. The ramparts of the walls give way to a forest that covers the northern slope of the hills. City suburbs that invade the neighbouring towns surround this area without touching the beautiful expanses of green countryside. An old convent stands in unspoilt Valmarina. This building houses the headquarters of the Parco dei Colli in Bergamo, and the structure of its Romanesque church can still be seen today. Here the cycle path has several hills and becomes more challenging but not particularly difficult. It continues among the trees, which in summer offer welcome shade, towards the western branch of the system of hills on which the Sombreno Sanctuary sits overlooking the course of the Brembo River. Your excursion could end here with a visit to the sanctuary. The sanctuary was built on the site of an ancient fortification and can be reached along an old road or various paths. The “greenway�, which extends for some ten kilometres in total, continues, however, around the sanctuary hill and crosses Paladina,

Cosa c’è di più bello che iniziare la giornata con una sana pedalata unita alla visita di bellezze artistiche-naturali e terminare con una degustazione di prodotti tipici? Se percorrerete le varie ciclovie di città e provincia vi consiglio di assaggiare i tipici: casoncelli, polenta taragna (ciclovia dei colli), Scarpinocc e Formagella (Val seriana), Strachitunt, Branzi (Val Brembana), tinca ripiena con un buon ValCalepio bianco (Lago d’Iseo)! Ma il vino mi raccomando… solo alla fine della pedalata! What better way to begin the day than taking a healthy bike ride to see art treasures and nature and ending with a meal of typical products? If you ride along any of the various cycle paths in the city and province, we recommend stopping to taste: casoncelli (meatstuffed ravioli), polenta taragna (polenta with cheese) (Bergamo hills cycle path), Scarpinocc (ravioli) and Formagella (cheese) (Seriana Valley), Strachitunt, Branzi (cheeses) (Brembana Valley), and stuffed tench with a good white ValCalepio wine (Lake Iseo)! But the wine don’t forget… only at the end of the ride!

passaparola _ Abbiamo trascorso 3 giorni in montagna, in Presolana. Era la prima volta che visitavamo l’Italia e abbiamo deciso di venire a Bergamo per la facilità a raggiungere l’aeroporto e le località di sci della provincia. Ci siamo divertiti molto, soprattutto perché non avevamo mai sciato prima d’ora e abbiamo avuto le nostre prime esperienze sulla neve. Anche l’accoglienza è stata molto calorosa e la gente simpatica. Purtroppo sulle piste non tutti parlano inglese e anche noi non sapevamo come dire in italiano “pistaaaa!”. We spent 3 days in the mountains, in Presolana. It was our first visit to Italy and we decided to come to Bergamo because the airport and local ski resorts are easy to reach. We had a great time, mainly because we had never skied before and it was our first experience on the snow. We were warmly welcomed and everybody was friendly. Unfortunately not everybody spoke English on the pistes and we didn’t know how to say in Italian “watch out!”.

Bergamo è una città molto affascinante e a portata di mano: è facile muoversi e i trasporti sono molto economici, soluzione ideale per noi giovani. Ci siamo fermati una sola notte e abbiamo trascorso la serata in Città Alta, punto di incontro per turisti e per gli abitanti di Bergamo. Purtroppo in città ci sono poche discoteche, ma ci siamo divertiti molto e ritorneremo per conoscere meglio questo territorio così interessante! Bergamo is a very attractive city and easy to reach. It is also easy to get around and public transport is very economical - the perfect solution of young people. We only stayed one night and spent the evening in Città Alta, a meeting place for tourists and inhabitants of Bergamo. Unfortunately there are few discos in the city, but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would like to come back to discover more about this interesting area!

Un week-end pedalando tra natura, arte e storia Valleys, rivers, lakes and the plain A weekend pedalling among nature, art and history
P
er la sua posizione tra la pianura e le vallate, Bergamo è storicamente al centro delle principali vie di comunicazione e dei traffici e lo è anche per quanto riguarda buona parte dalla piste ciclabili. Vogliamo suggerirvi un week end per conoscere la terra di Bergamo magari a cavallo di una bicicletta. Si parte da Bergamo per risalire le due valli principali, solcate dai fiumi Brembo e Serio, e sempre dalla città ci si avvia in bicicletta lungo percorsi che portano ai laghi o agli antichi borghi al piano. Per decine e decine di chilometri i ciclisti procedono con la massima sicurezza alla scoperta di un territorio molto vario, con un grande patrimonio di storia e d’arte e dove non mancano occasioni per piacevoli soste anche enogastronomiche, soprattutto per chi va alla ricerca di prodotti genuini e di piatti della tradizione. Ipotizziamo una prima tappa montana a scelta tra la Valle Seriana o la Valle Brembana.

ue to its position between the Po plain and two main valleys, Bergamo is historically at the centre of many principle communication and trade routes and also has a great many cycle paths. We’d like to give you some suggestions for a weekend break getting to know Bergamo on a bicycle. Our bike tour leaves from Bergamo and climbs the two main valleys, which are crossed by the two rivers, Brembo and Serio. Other cycle paths from the city, instead, follow routes that lead to lakes or old villages on the Po plain. For dozens of kilometres, cyclists can safely explore an extremely varied area with a great heritage of history and art, where there are plenty of opportunities and places to stop, even for food and drink, particularly if you are on the lookout for wholesome products and traditional dishes. Our first mountain route either begins in the Seriana or Brembana Valley.

Da Bergamo arriviamo a Clusone: la ciclovia della Valle Seriana inizia ad Alzano Lombardo e termina dopo una trentina di chilometri. Su sterrato, non presenta difficoltà di sorta; solo nell’ultimo tratto c’è da superare un dislivello non impegnativo per raggiungere la quota dell’altopiano di Clusone. Per chi si accinge a partire da Alzano suggeriamo la tappa nella basilica di San Martino per ammirare le celebri sacrestie e, una volta raggiunto Clusone, di visitare il centro storico, ottimamente conservato, con numerosi locali caratteristici. Vi spicca, oltre alla Torre dell’Orologio con lo straordinario quadrante planetario realizzato nel ‘500 da Piero Fanzago, l’Oratorio dei Disciplini con l’affresco della Danza Macabra. In realtà tutte le località incontrate lungo il percorso della ciclabile seriana meriterebbero una sosta per una visita a monumenti storici e artistici, con numerose testimonianze d’archeologia industriale.
1st day Seriana Valley cycle path Bergamo to Clusone: the Seriana Valley cycle path begins in Alzano Lombardo and ends after about thirty kilometres. Being mostly a surfaced path, it is not particularly difficult, with only the last section having a small climb to reach the plateau of Clusone. If you are starting in Alzano, we recommend paying a visit to the Basilica of San Martino to admire the famous sacristies. Once in Clusone, we suggest going to see the beautifully preserved old town with its numerous characteristic shops and restaurants. Two monuments of particular interest here are Torre dell’Orologio (Clock Tower), an extraordinary planetary clock built in the sixteenth century by Piero Fanzago, and the Oratorio dei Disciplini (Oratory of the Disciplines), which has fresco of the Macabre Dance. In reality, all places along the Seriana Valley cycle path have historic and artistic monuments and examples of industrial archaeology that are well worth seeing.

1° giorno Ciclovia della Valle Brembana All’origine di questa ciclovia ci fu, almeno nella prima parte, lo sviluppo di San Pellegrino Terme, celebre per le sue acque e anche perché vi fu realizzato uno dei primi, e rari, casinò d’Italia. La ciclovia della Valle Brembana inizia a Zogno, nella media valle. L’itinerario segue il vecchio tracciato della ferrovia con straordinarie vedute sul fiume tra pareti di roccia a picco. Il turista in bici attraversa le gallerie, perfettamente illuminate, ove un tempo correva il treno e dalle quali si possono accedere a cittadine e borghi dove ancora si incontrano tracce della Via Priula, fatta costruire a fine ‘500 da Venezia per collegare Bergamo con la Valtellina. La ciclabile porta fino all’alta valle e termina a Piazza Brembana, un tempo capolinea della ferrovia. D’obbligo una sosta a San Pellegrino Terme per ammirare le testimonianze della Belle Époque.
1st day Brembana Valley cycle path The development of San Pellegrino Terme, famous for its waters and also because it had one of the first, and rare, casinos in Italy, was at the origins of this cycle path. The Brembana Valley cycle path begins in Zogno, in the heart of the valley. It follows the old railway track and has splendid views of the river and steep rocky cliff faces. The path runs through perfectly illuminated tunnels where trains once passed. Small villages and towns en route preserve traces of the ancient Via Priula, a trade route built at the end of the sixteenth century by the Venetian Republic to connect Bergamo with Valtellina. The cycle path continues to the upper valley and ends in Piazza Brembana, once the end of the railway line. A stop in the town of San Pellegrino Terme is a must to see beautiful examples of the Belle Époque.

Per il secondo giorno cambiamo completamente scenario e andiamo a scoprire le possibilità offerte dalle piste ciclabili tracciate lungo il fiume Adda, di cui si può seguire il corso per un lungo tratto (di grande interesse per i riferimenti a Leonardo da Vinci). In particolare, sulla sponda bergamasca, non mancano mete di grande richiamo, tra le quali spiccano castelli e chiese romaniche; una facile deviazione conduce a Sotto il Monte e ai luoghi cari alla memoria di Giovanni XXIII, il “Papa buono”. Particolarmente gradevoli anche nella stagione estiva le escursioni lungo le alzaie, strade rialzate sopra gli argini per il transito dei buoi e dei cavalli che un tempo rimorchiavano i barconi che risalivano l’Adda. Tra il verde delle sponde e il fresco invitante dell’acqua questi itinerari offrono, tra l’altro, belle vedute sul fiume e i monti non molto lontani. Volendo ci si può imbarcare con la bicicletta sull’antichissimo traghetto che da secoli attraversa il fiume sfruttando le correnti e che venne immortalato da Leonardo in alcuni suoi celebri dipinti.

We change scenery on the second day and go in discovery of the opportunities offered by the cycle paths along the River Adda, which extend for many kilometres (references to Leonardo da Vinci are of particular interest). The Bergamask bank, in particular, has many places of interest, including castles and Romanesque churches. An easy detour leads to Sotto il Monte and the places dear to the memory of Pope John XXIII, the “Good Pope”. A ride along the towpaths is particularly enjoyable, even in the summer. These roads, raised above the banks, were built to allow oxen and horses to pull the boats and barges that travelled up the river. Among the green vegetation of the banks and inviting fresh water, these itineraries offer, among other things, beautiful views of the river and nearby mountains. If you wish, you can take your bike on the very old ferry that for centuries has crossed the river by making use of the currents. This ferry was immortalised by Leonardo da Vinci in several of his famous paintings.

3° giorno Ciclovia dei Laghi Se possiamo aggiungere ancora un giorno al nostro week end il consiglio è di non perdersi assolutamente il percorso lungo la sponda bergamasca del Lago d’Iseo, tra Sarnico e Lovere: in tutto una trentina di chilometri nei quali si attraversano borghi suggestivi e ricchi di storia quali Predore, Tavernola, Riva di Solto e Castro. Durante il percorso non potrete non notare al centro del lago Montisola, l’isola lacustre più grande d’Europa, sulla quale le auto non possono circolare. Quindi un consiglio: prendete il battello e percorrete Montisola in bici attraversando le sue affascinanti viette e lasciatevi incantare dal paesaggio circostante.

If you can add another day to your weekend, we highly recommend cycling along the path that follows the Bergamask shore of Lake Iseo, between Sarnico and Lovere: in total about thirty kilometres that pass through striking villages rich in history such as Predore, Tavernola, Riva di Solto and Castro. During the bike ride, you will most probably notice Montisola, the largest lake island in Europe, sitting in the centre of the lake. Cars are not allowed on the island, but you can take a ferry and cycle around the island’s attractive lanes and roads and enjoy the beautiful surrounding scenery.

(10-03-2012/24-06-2012) CARLO CERESA Un pittore del Seicento lombardo tra realtà e devozione Museo Adriano Bernareggi e Accademia Carrara/Gamec. Carlo Ceresa è considerato il maggiore artista bergamasco, insieme a Evaristo Baschenis, del XVII secolo, sia per la capillare diffusione delle sue opere nel territorio, sia per la qualità delle sue opere. I dipinti, provenienti da musei italiani e stranieri, da chiese del territorio e da collezioni private, toccano diversi temi dal ritratto al soggetto sacro. Il percorso espositivo prende avvio dalle sale del Museo Bernareggi, dove viene analizzata l’attività giovanile di Ceresa. La sezione allestita negli spazi dell’Accademia Carrara/GAMeC tratta il percorso stilistico del pittore e si apre ad uno sguardo sulla grande pittura barocca del tempo. La mostra presenta 90 opere scelte tra quelle più rappresentative del suo catalogo. Carlo Ceresa, together with Evaristo Baschenis, is considered the greatest painter in Bergamo of the seventeenth century because of the widespread distribution of his works throughout the area and their superb quality. The paintings, which come from Italian and foreign museums and local churches and private collections, touch different topics ranging from portraits to the sacred. The exhibition tour starts in the rooms of the Bernareggi Museum, where the activity of a young Ceresa is analysed; it continues in the Accademia Carrara/GAMeC, where it follows the stylistic path of the painter and looks at the great Baroque painting of the era.The exhibition displays 90 works chosen from some of the most representative of his portfolio. www.mostraceresa.it

ome per Città Alta è Piazza Vecchia, Porta Nuova è il punto focale di Bergamo Bassa. Si tratta di un ampio passaggio, affiancato da due edifici d’impianto neoclassico, i Propilei, aperto nell’800 nelle mura medievali (demolite nel 1901) per facilitare l’accesso all’antichissima Fiera di Sant’Alessandro che si teneva ogni anno ad agosto. Su questo vasto spazio sorse il nuovo centro di Bergamo, completato nel 1927. Luminoso asse stradale del nuovo centro è il Sentierone, la passeggiata dei bergamaschi, sui cui prolungamenti troviamo, ad est, la Via Tasso e, a ovest, la Via XX Settembre, al centro di un’animatissima area commerciale. In Via Tasso sorgono edifici pubblici di buona qualità costruiti nell’Ottocento. Tra questi il Palazzo della Provincia (dove sono esposte numerose opere dello scultore bergamasco Giacomo Manzù) e della Prefettura, oltre alla Chiesa di Santo Spirito, con dipinti del Lotto e del Borgognone. Sul Sentierone si affacciano la Chiesa di San Bartolomeo (con la celebre pala d’altare eseguita nel 1516 da Lorenzo Lotto) e il Teatro Donizetti affiancato dal monumento al grande musicista. Attorno al nuovo centro è andata crescendo la Bergamo moderna che ha conservato gli antichi borghi sorti sulle direttrici delle principali strade che dalla pianura e dalle valli portavano a Bergamo Alta. I borghi sono animatissimi come un tempo, con negozi e botteghe artigiane d’ogni genere, oltre a un gran numero di ristoranti, bar e trattorie. Lungo una delle strade che salgono verso Città Alta, Via San Tomaso, è nato agli inizi dell’Ottocento il palazzo dell’Accademia Carrara con la Pinacoteca che raccoglie circa duemila opere delle principali scuole pittoriche italiane ed europee. Di fronte la Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea è utilizzata per importanti mostre oltre che ad essere sede di esposizioni permanenti. orta Nuova is the hub of Città Bassa (Lower Bergamo) just as Piazza Vecchia is heart of Città Alta (Upper Bergamo). This wide gateway, flanked by two neoclassical buildings, the Propylaea, was built in the nineteenth century in the medieval town walls (demolished in 1901) to facilitate access to the ancient Sant’Alessandro Fair, which was held each year in August. The new centre of Bergamo, completed in 1927, was built on this vast area. The broad thoroughfare of the new centre is the Sentierone, a popular promenade for Bergamo’s inhabitants, which extends to the east along Via Tasso and to the west along Via XX Settembre, the fashionable shopping street. Some well-kept public buildings built in the nineteenth century stand on Via Tasso including the Provincial Authority Building (where numerous works by the Bergamask sculptor Giacomo Manzù are displayed), the Prefecture and the Church of Santo Spirito, with paintings by Lotto and Borgognone. The Sentierone is overlooked by both the Church of San Bartolomeo (housing a famous altar-piece by Lorenzo Lotto dating back to 1516) and the Donizetti Theatre, flanked by a monument to the great musician. Modern Bergamo developed around this new centre, and some of the old villages that were established along the principal roads leading to Città Alta from the plains and valleys have been preserved. These places are just as alive today as they ever were, with shops and craft studios, and numerous restaurants, bars and trattorias. Along Via San Tomaso, one of the roads that climb towards Città Alta, stands the nineteenth-century building housing the Accademia Carrara and Art Gallery with over two thousand masterpieces from the principal Italian and European schools. Opposite the Accademia is the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery hosting important shows as well as being the seat of permanent exhibitions. The Bernareggi Museum of Sacred Art is situated in the nearby Pignolo quarter.

iazza Vecchia, per secoli cuore politico e amministrativo di Bergamo, è il naturale punto di partenza per visitare la città storica che si è sviluppata sulla collina. Al turista consigliamo, se ne ha possibilità, di incominciare a conoscere Città Alta utilizzando la funicolare, il cui primo impianto risale a 120 anni fa. Dalla stazione di arrivo si esce subito sulla Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe e già qui si è avvolti dalla magica atmosfera di questa città che alterna anguste vie medievali a spazi luminosi. Tipicamente medievale è il percorso di Via GombitoVia Colleoni, la strada principale che attraversava la città da est ad ovest. Ed è la Via Gombito che conduce a piazza Vecchia formatasi nel ‘400 lungo la direttrice di quest’asse urbano. Molti gli elementi di grande interesse in questa bellissima piazza. Dalla fontana donata dal podestà veneto Alvise Contarini alla Torre Civica costruita nel XII secolo, dalla facciata in candido marmo del palazzo della biblioteca civica (costruito nel Seicento come nuova sede municipale) alla mole del Palazzo della Ragione, risalente alla seconda metà del XII secolo. Superata la loggia del palazzo comunale eccoci in un altro spazio, quello della piazza del Duomo sul quale si affacciano la Cattedrale, il Battistero, la Cappella dove è sepolto il celebre condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni, la Basilica romanica di Santa Maria Maggiore, il cui fastoso interno barocco raccoglie un gran numero di opere d’arte. Si va dagli affreschi trecenteschi alle straordinarie tarsie del coro eseguite su disegni di Lorenzo Lotto, agli arazzi fiamminghi e fiorentini, alla tomba di Gaetano Donizetti. Proprio la sepoltura del grande musicista offre la traccia per un itinerario tra i luoghi donizettiani fino alla sua casa natale nel borgo di Canale, con la possibilità di scoprire angoli del tutto inediti dell’antica città. Un altro itinerario per conoscere storia e luoghi di Bergamo è quello che unisce varie sedi museali: dalla Rocca al Museo della Città nell’ex monastero di San Francesco, ai Musei Archeologico e di Scienze Naturali nel complesso della Cittadella viscontea.

iazza Vecchia, for centuries the political and administrative heart of Bergamo, is the first place to visit on a tour of Città Alta, the historical city of Upper Bergamo that developed high on the hilltop. We recommend you begin your tour of Città Alta by taking the funicular railway, built 120 years ago, which connects the upper and lower towns. The funicular arrives directly in Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe and on leaving the station you are immediately enveloped in the magical atmosphere of the town. Città Alta alternates narrow medieval alleyways with bright open spaces, and the route along Via Gombito-Via Colleoni, the main thoroughfare running from east to west, is typically medieval. Via Gombito leads to Piazza Vecchia, a beautiful square built in the fifteenth century along the line of this road axis. There are many elements of great interest in this wonderful square including the fountain donated by the Venetian podestà Alvise Contarini; the civic tower built in the XII century; the municipal library building with its white marble façade (built in the seventeenth century as a new town hall), and the Palazzo della Ragione, dating back to the second half of the XII century. Beyond the loggia of the municipal building is another square, Piazza del Duomo, overlooked by the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Chapel where the famous condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni is entombed, and the Romanesque Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, whose ornate Baroque interior houses a great number of works of art including fourteenth century frescoes, extraordinary marquetry panels created from drawings by Lorenzo Lotto, Flemish and Florentine tapestries and the tomb of Gaetano Donizetti. The tomb of this great musician is the start of an itinerary in discovery of Donizetti, which leads through hidden corners of the old town to his birthplace in the Canale quarter. Another itinerary in discovery of Bergamo’s history unites the various museums: the Rocca (fortress) museum, the City museum in the former monastery of San Francesco and the Archaeological and Natural History Museum in the complex of the Visconti Cittadella.
