TOWNS OF GREENE COUNTY JEFFERSON

A great place to raise a family! Our small town quality of life is safe and friendly. Our location, within an hour of Des Moines and Ames, gives easy access to additional cultural events and attractions, while the distance eliminates the hassles of metropolitan living. Housing is affordable and available in many price ranges. Entrepreneurship is welcome and supported. Let us give you a tour and a chance to share our love of living here.

CHURDAN

A school has existed in Churdan since 1882. A wellstocked library and a very active library program augment the school system. The community is served by strong American Legion and Lions Clubs. A Veterans Memorial Park dedicated in 2012 stands in honor of the five branches of the United States Armed Services.

DANA

Founded in 1879 by Samuel Dana, Dana at one time had a cheese factory that produced 12,000 pounds of cheese per day from area dairies. Today Dana is oriented to grain farming and pork production. In 2011 Junction Hilltop Wind constructed five new wind turbines nearby, helping supply power to the Louis Dreyfus ethanol plant between Dana and Grand Junction.

GRAND JUNCTION

Established at the crossroads of two great rail lines, the Mississippi-Missouri and the Minneapolis-St. Louis in the 1860’s, today the “junction” rail lines are both Union Pacific Railroad and a major east/west route across the nation. Grand Junction has a swimming pool, a brand new community center, library, the Kennedy Museum, the Lincoln Highway Museum, and at the edge of town, the Lincoln Highway Interpretive Park.

PATON

William Paton emigrated from Scotland to New York City in 1839. As a land broker, he came west on the railroad to see the country. Paton liked what he saw and started a library in Paton that would establish the town. Today Paton is the home of agricultural equipment manufacturer, Bauer Built, which recently sold to John Deere and will continue to manufacture huge corn and soybean planters in the facility.

RIPPEY

Rippey’s fire department maintains a team of 12 volunteer fire fighters and celebrated 100 years of service in 2011. In the depth of winter Rippey is the destination for the annual BRR (Bike Ride to Rippey) from Perry. Hundreds of hardy souls brave the elements to prove they can survive and enjoy the Friends of Rippey’s hospitality and hot beef sundaes.

SCRANTON

The iconic Scranton Water Tower, one of the first elevated steel towers in the state, was constructed in 1897 and is still in operation today. Scranton boasts two local manufacturers, Scranton Manufacturing, which constructs solid waste management equipment, and B&D Manufacturing, a geothermal components manufacturer. Tom Walker, a local welder, creates beautifully crafted benches that now grace installations in parks and towns and across the county.

COOPER

“Iowa Boy” Chuck Offenburger and wife Carla Offenburger call Cooper home. Lifelong resident Larry Dean Monthei’s welding shop attracts farm and industrial business from across the region. An active Methodist congregation gathers weekly in the 1880’s church. “Everything is super in Cooper!”

The purpose of the Greene County Chamber is to foster thriving relationships between individuals, businesses and organizations by serving as a leader, advocate and resource for Greene County business.

JEFFERSON MATTERS: MAIN STREET Shaping the future of downtown Established in 2012, the mission of Jefferson Matters: Main Street is to work together as a community to strengthen, support, and energize Jefferson’s downtown through historic preservation. Downtown Jefferson is a colorful, historic district brimming with art, shopping, dining and activities that people can’t wait to get to and can’t stop talking about. It’s a great space that’s part of a great place. Partnership is imperative for success in our downtown and we are proud to work with the City of Jefferson, Greene County, Greene County Chamber, Greene County Development Corporation and individual Jefferson Matters: Main Street investors. Together, we continually strive to make downtown Jefferson a dynamic business hub and visitor destination. With teams of local volunteers working together on the committees of design, organization, promotion and business improvement, we support the Four-Point approach of the National Main Street program. We continually see the results of hardworking volunteers and have logged 16,518 hours of volunteer service. With private and city funding in building rehabilitation and property acquisition in the Main Street district, we have achieved a $3 million benchmark of investment. This significant investment in downtown Jefferson has resulted in 16 new or expanded businesses, 35 new jobs, and 31 rehabilitated/new construction projects in four short years. We are shaping the future of downtown. We are an award-winning Main Street Iowa community but we are not resting on our laurels. Working with the community, Main Street Iowa, Region XII Council of Governments, and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach we are formulating plans to propel us forward to keep Jefferson’s downtown district vital and prosperous far into the 21st Century. Wilber was the first Iowa woman to win an Olympic gold medal when she won first place in archery in Munich, Germany in 1972, setting two world records. In a circle of paving bricks centered by a marble pedestal, the life-sized bronze statue of Wilber, by Illinois sculptor Jeff Adams, is the centerpiece of the plaza. She stands poised and mid-shot northeast of the Greene County Community Center at the corner of Lincoln Way and Vine Street. To complete the Olympic venue experience, a bronze target has also been placed across the street at a distance similar to what Wilber shot in competition.

PARKS & RECREATION The Greene County Conservation Board manages 2,000 acres in 20 areas that include Spring Lake Park, boat ramps on the North Raccoon River, public hunting areas and the Raccoon River Valley Trail system. These areas provide for a wide variety of outdoor recreation activities that include camping, fishing, hunting, boating, swimming, picnicking, biking, hiking, nature watching, snowmobiling and more. The North Raccoon River meanders for 40 miles through Greene County. Seven river access areas have been developed that include concrete boat ramps at Hyde Park, Brown Bridge, McMahon Access, Eureka Bridge, Henderson Park, Squirrel Hallow and Adkins Bridge. Canoeing and kayaking have become popular and trip lengths range from three to six hours.

PARKS

SPRING LAKE PARK

Spring Lake Park is a 240-acre park with a 50-acre lake and public beach bordered by campsites. The lake is a favorite of campers, fisherman, picnickers and other park users wanting to be near the water. 126 electrical campsites and two cabin rentals along with shower houses make this park a popular home every weekend of the summer. Shelter houses are often used for gatherings and may be reserved by calling 515-7385069. A concessionaire provides roller skating, boat rental, and a beach concession stand. There are 2.2 miles of asphalt roads ideal for biking, rollerblading, jogging and walking.

HENDERSON COUNTY PARK

Henderson County Park is one-mile south of Jefferson next to the North Raccoon River. With a boat ramp just below the rock fishing riffle, the park provides restrooms, tent camping, a picnic area and grills.

HYDE PARK

Hyde Park is a 57-acre park along the North Raccoon River northwest of Scranton on County Road E65. The park offers 28 electrical camping hookups and unlimited primitive sites. A concrete boat ramp and fishing riffle provide easy access and improved fishing opportunity on the river.

SEVEN HILLS PARK

Seven Hills Park is 80 acres of timberland just south and west of Jefferson. A sledding hill and enclosed shelter house exist for those interested in winter activities. The shelter house has electrical service and a stone fireplace, making it a rustic venue for weddings and parties. Reservations may be made by calling 515-386-5674.

SQUIRREL HALLOW PARK

Squirrel Hallow Park, developed in 1934, is the second oldest county park in Iowa. The 56-acre park is bordered on two sides by a 147-acre wildlife management area. The focal point of the park is a shelter house built on a bluff overlooking the North Raccoon River that offers a scenic view of the river valley. EDUCATION Greene County schools team up for a good education The Greene County School District is in its second year of existence after the merger of the former East Greene and Jefferson Scranton School Districts took place in 2014. The mission of the district is to partner with its communities to provide each student with a foundation for lifelong learning. The school district draws 1,300 students from a 450 square mile area made up of 11 of Greene County’s 15 townships. The high school (9th-12th), middle school (7th and 8th) and elementary school (pre-kindergarten through 3rd), as well as the administration building, are located in Jefferson. The intermediate school (4th-6th) is in Grand Junction. The district offers tuition based preschool for 3-year-olds and state-funded preschool for 4-year-olds. Greene County Community Schools' graduation rate is 95 percent with more than 88 percent of graduates seeking higher education. Extracurricular activities are very important to students and 48 percent of the student body is involved. There are boys' high school athletic teams for baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, track and wrestling. Girls' high school teams include basketball, cross country, golf, softball, track and volleyball. Both boys and girls can join swimming, soccer and tennis teams through sharing agreements with Boone High School and Carroll Kuemper High School. Concert band, marching band, jazz band, concert choir, and jazz choir are also options available to all high school students. The Ram Restaurant, where students in culinary classes prepare and serve meals to the public in a restaurant setting, is one of only five such programs in Iowa. The district also boasts a construction class that builds and sells a house each year. Students do the majority of the work, ranging from concrete work to framing, electrical, plumbing, drywall and more. In northern Greene County, Paton-Churdan Community School District draws around 200 students from a 125 square mile area. The elementary and high schools, both located in Churdan, have a 24-member faculty. Some athletic programs are shared with the Greene County School District. Junior and senior students take classes at the Greene County High School for approximately two-thirds of the school day. Freshman and sophomore students take classes at the Greene County High School one-third of the school day.

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY There are not many counties in Iowa or across the United States that can make the claim that all of its major manufacturers are successful and expanding. Greene County is a perfect example of how a rural county can continue to compete in an environment where more and more of the population is moving closer to major cities. In the past three years Greene County has added a major casino and hotel complex, completed a $23 million expansion of the hospital, had significant expansions at several of its manufacturers, added a new major manufacturer, a new Hy-Vee and expanded jobs at all other major employers. The result is more than 900 new jobs in the county. Greene County was recognized by Governor Branstad as the first official “Home Base Iowa Community” for offering jobs and support to veterans looking to settle in Iowa. The county also provides a vibrant tourism industry including the one-of-a-kind Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower and the Raccoon River Valley Trail. The combination of community assets, wide range of jobs available for all workers, entertainment at the casino, and aggressive economic development efforts have made Greene County a unique destination point.
