Our £4.8 million Raising the Roof renewal project enters an exciting phase as part of our capital objectives to make the venue fit for purpose and leave a legacy for future generations. It’s going to be amazing, and we need your help to make it happen! Take a look at page 4 and 5 for more details. The Drum continues to play a pivotal role in delivering Birmingham City Council’s City of Festivals strategy. As the key delivery partner in the annual flagship Simmer Down Festival, we are delighted to present an eclectic programme of live performances and workshops across the festival site in Handsworth Park - which this year is headlined by the international reggae

superstar Maxi Priest. In addition The Drum will be presenting Dub Qalandar an outdoor spectacular intercultural production in Victoria Square as part of the Birmingham Weekender. Our music highlights includes an amazing line up for the Legends Of Reggae tour, plus Bollywood meets Motown spectacular Botown and the Afrobeat extravaganza featuring Seun Kuti, son of legendary Fela Kuti. To keep you laughing through the summer season we have the return of Birmingham’s Shazia Mirza, and our regular first Friday of every month, Upfront Comedy, brings the very best in international and national stand-up comedians. In addition our educational theatre strand, including Hand’s Up Don’t Shoot, My Father and Other Super Heroes and Different is Dangerous, we also see the return of the hilarious Devon Morgan and Charles Tomlin in a play with a twist, as You Are The Jury! We have an exciting programme of films, with post screening discussions, which is presented in partnership with 4Reel and 4WardEver UK. The programme is supported by the British Film Institute and Film Audience Network.

As the intercultural heart of Brum, The Drum is rooted in a wide range of partnerships which enables us to harness our collective skills and expertise as we present a creative offer which we hope will entertain, educates and all of our audiences – please come and join us this summer both at the venue and off site at the festivals and be part of the our future trajectory in Raising the Roof. DRUM25 £5 to 70070

Dear Friend, As we shed our winter skin in readiness for the summer, I am sending you warm greetings and thanks for your unwavering support, as a valued audience, partner and donor. I am pleased to report that the Raising the Roof renewal project is advancing steadily. Although it might appear slow the project is on target to achieve its capital objectives: Birmingham City Council Cabinet has formally approved £900,000 and permission to use its Construction Framework; we have successfully prepared the Stage Two Arts

Council England Strategic Fund bid, including a revamped Fundraising Action Plan; and we are devising a Big Lottery Reaching Communities project… so watch this space! The bid will be submitted in May for a decision mid-Sepember this year; full closure is anticipated for March/April 2016. The building works required will take up to eighteen months followed by a spectacular launch September/October the following year with an exciting array of entertainment, educational and training programmes suitable for all age groups and communities.

Our fundraising objective is to raise £400,000 through an innovative promotional campaign, delivered in two parts: May and September. We are confident that we will achieve a large percentage of the financial target from Trusts and Foundations, and a smaller amount from donations. To successfully deliver the campaign I am asking for your help by becoming one of twelve Raising the Roof Champions and or a donor. We will be launching the campaign shortly and sharing our plans and hope you will join us to achieve the renewal of what was the site of Aston Hippodrome into a fit-forpurpose and invigorating performing and digital arts venue where our children can enjoy for generations to come. One of Birmingham’s favourite sons, poet Benjamin Zephaniah, and internationally acclaimed musician, Courtney Pine, are our patrons and are fully behind our new vision. Other partners include Birmingham Ofsted triple rating Perry Beeches Academy Trust and the innovative Punch Records.

Should you wish to help please do not hesitate to call me on 0121 333 2444, or drop me an email on c.small@the-drum.org.uk and I would be happy to discuss our plans with you. I hope you enjoy our sensational summer programme, with something for children, young people and adults alike. Best wishes Charles E Small FRSA MBA Chief Executive

Suitable for audiences 12 years and above Using a combination of performances derived from audio recordings and fictional monologues Different is Dangerous gives a unique insight into the idiosyncratic life of the Asian community living in Leeds. This is a devised piece performed by its creators from Two’s Company; Nyla Levy and Fadia Qaraman. Two’s Company were interested in exploring the melting pot of Leeds, which seemed on the outside to be incapable of mixing. Their mission was to find out who this community was really made up of. The audience will laugh out loud, fight back tears and clench their fists in anger as you encounter the array of characters from Leeds City centre in this upfront and personal piece. Different is Dangerous takes you on a tour of the human condition; giving unrestricted access to humanity at its most revealing. Written, Performed and Directed by Nyla Levy and Fadia Qaraman

On Sat 9 Aug 2014 Ferguson, a suburb of St Louis, Missouri became the unlikely focus of world attention when eighteen year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson. The majority of Ferguson’s population is black, yet out of a force of 50 officers, only three are African Americans. Tensions immediately after this tragic incidence ran high and ignited the community that felt abandoned and betrayed by the very people it pays to serve and protect. This fictitious play explores two rich and successful New Yorker’s on vacation caught up by accident in the racial unrest that follows, after a peaceful candlelit protest turns violent.

“My Father and Other Super Heroes is a moving and powerful story… I think it’s a vivid, funny and painfully honest feat of memory and autobiography.” Charles Beckett, Arts Council England My Father and Other Superheroes is a one-man show that follows Nick’s journey dealing with subjects of fatherhood, loss, heroes and hope - from being smuggled out of his home country of Uganda at a young age - to learn what it takes to truly become a hero and a father. Spending most of his life without a father figure, Nick realised that Superman, Luke Skywalker and Spider Man (among others) had filled that role as he grew up, inadvertently providing the blueprints of how to be a good father. With such impossible shoes to fill, and a distinct lack of special powers, the play follows Nick’s journey to discover what it takes for a man to become a hero, and ultimately the conclusion that a hero can be just a man. My Father and Other Superheroes is a innovatively fuses story-telling, physical theatre and contemporary spoken word in a powerful one hour performance.

Working Illegally Thu 4 Jun Doors 7pm, Show 7:30pm Tickets: £4 (£3) Working Illegally, is a documentary film about the ways in which migrant labour is exploited via border controls, raids and immigration detention in the UK. Last year the UK Home Office detained approximately 30,000 people across a network of 13 detention centres. People are incarcerated in these centres for immigration reasons without trial or charge. Many are asylum seekers and other migrants who have committed no crime. They are detained for an indefinite period. The new documentary film from Standoff Films, Working Illegally looks behind politicians’ rhetoric, the closed walls and barbed wire of UK border enforcement, to expose the reality of immigration detention, raising pertinent questions concerning its nature and purpose. Told primarily through detainees’ testimonies, based on original research by Corporate Watch, this film offers critical insight into the labour that maintains the UK detention estate as well as a general introduction to the immigration detention system. The exhibition also features oral testimonies in video and print format, alongside archival photographs from the Birmingham Jamaican community. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund
