My favourite book is by Ben Carson, a doctor from America. I’ve been reading his books since I was a little boy but when I was in jail, I read it and gained an understanding as a man. Sometimes you can do something as a kid and it doesn’t fully digest. Even though our stories are not similar I just took certain lessons.

Recently The Cut was in Los Angeles to visit Grandma Cut. After visiting her Senior Centre where there is over-80s Ping Pong, I decided to find something “really LA” to do. Being a massive fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race, I spotted a night on at an obscure gay bar in West Hollywood where you could see actual contestants from the show “lipsyncing for their lives”. The show started with these 6 ft 5 tall glamazons miming to Pink and Katy Perry then suddenly I noticed these weird looking suits whispering into their sleeves. I spy this tiny women in a leather dress, her face all smeared with makeup and two sidekicks, faces all painted white. I’m like, “how nice, some people made an effort for the show!”. Then minileather-woman gets up and starts filming everyone on a tiny camera. And then it dawns on me...that tiny woman, the security guys, the weird posse- it’s Lady Gaga! The English Defence League has grabbed their fair share of the headlines throughout the year in this country. At the start of each news story regarding the Anti-Islamic party, we are used to hearing the name of one man who is regarded as the figurehead within the EDL, who not only causes controversy within the confines of a Television Studio and on the streets of the United Kingdom, but has gained notoriety in the past six months through the tragic death of British Army soldier Lee Rigby. Yes, we all know who Tommy Robinson is, but for how much longer will he be in the spotlight?
On the 8th October, Tommy Robinson (or Stephen YaxleyLennon to those who know him closest) announced that he was leaving the organisation that he co-founded due to the concerns he has over the ‘‘dangers of far-right extremism’’. The step-down of Robinson, who is firmly based in Luton, caused shockwaves throughout the party and amongst its supporters, with one Twitter user epitomising the views of its thousands– strong fan base. ‘‘Shocking! So the last man standing against Islamic radicalism has given up and ran away. You weren’t as brave as you claimed!’’ Robinson’s departure subsequently paved the way for many other instrumental figures to leave the party, including co-leader Kevin Carroll, who was regarded as Robinson’s ‘right-hand man’. Although the EDL released a statement hours later stating that the group ‘‘will not die because they’re walking away’’, a serious threat is posed towards the stability of the group, with many critics of the party feeling that their time is over.
When reading Robinson’s statement, or as others would call it ‘‘The news I have been waiting to hear for months’’ on the BBC News website, a number of questions emerged inside my head. The first one clearly challenges Robinson’s resolve, because if he has quit due to the dangers of far-right extremism, why did he even bother to co-found and lead a party that actively protests against far-right extremism? The second and more probing question that I asked myself was whether the English Defence League actually has a future without the man who single-handedly raised their profile from a weak, breakaway party of the BNP to a PR-fuelled mob of thousands that want to ‘cleanse’ their country of terrorism and radicalism. Are the EDL here to stay? With hints that Robinson may be about to form yet another breakaway party, with the emphasis on not organising street protests, this may compound the EDL even further into desolation. If we look back at the party which was once run by a man who owns a sunbed shop, we may be able to tell if they have a leg to stand on, or just two feet to run away with. The English Defence League was founded on the 27th June 2009. According to the party’s website, their creation was caused in reaction to ‘‘the shocking actions of a small group of Muslim extremists who, at a homecoming parade in Luton, openly mocked the

“even nIck grIffIn, chaIrman of the brItIsh natIonalIst party and most lIkely one of the most hated people In the country descrIbed tommy robInson and his men as ‘Goodhearted morons’” sacrifices of our personnel without any fear.’’ While reading the EDL’s ‘‘mission statement’’, you get the impression that they attempt to retreat from biting off more than they can chew. With Islam being the second largest religion practised within the UK, and there currently being over two and a half million Muslims in England alone, the EDL try desperately not to further antagonise and isolate a group that they consider the enemy. Other policies from the Defence League include ‘Ensuring that the public get a balanced picture of Islam’ and ‘Working in solidarity with others around the world’. This is all well and good put it doesn’t particularly help in their effort to paint over the cracks of their real agenda and the bad reputation it is giving to Tommy Robinson. From 2009 to early 2013, the English Defence League operated in very slim numbers, with their official Facebook page having only a few hundred supporters. There were very few incidents in terms of publicity, which stagnated the growth of the EDL. They needed an incident in which they could rally behind, and that the same time help gain awareness of their own political views. On 22nd May 2013, the English Defence League was presented with a golden opportunity which was to emerge from the wake of a tragic incident which perplexed British society.

Private Lee Rigby, Drummer of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, was brutally murdered outside the Royal Artillery barracks in Woolwich, South-East London. Two men, now known as Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale were reprimanded for the attack. The attackers, who belong to the Islamic faith after once being Christians, brandished knives with their blood stained hands, and recorded their version of events immediately after fatally assaulting Rigby, with Adebolajo stating ‘‘The only reason that we have killed this man today, is because Muslims are dying daily because of British Soldiers.’’ Through the heartbreak and incomprehensible grieving suffered by the British public, the EDL attached themselves firmly to this incident. As well as their followers on social media networks, Robinson’s street protests began to gain in momentum. Speaking to Channel Four in a rally Birmingham in July 2013, Robinson made note of the Lee Rigby incident and the success the EDL has felt because of it. “Since Woolwich, in a terrible way, it gave people a platform to listen to what we were saying…it’s common sense what we stand for and everyone’s agreeing.” It wasn’t just that people were agreeing with Robinson’s point of view, they were actively taking to the streets, now in their thousands, clad in balaclavas and lager cans in their hands, clinging on to every word being prophesised from the mouth of Yaxley-Lennon. Although it seems through my writing that the English Defence League were the glorious and law abiding party that everyone loved, it is far from the truth. Nearly every politician, celebrity, journalist and important figure condemned the actions of the EDL, which has seen them leave a wake of destruction
and fear towards Muslims and the wider community. For example, on 27th May 2013, just five days after the death of Lee Rigby, it was reported that EDL league member Adam Rodgers had taken to Facebook to gather support in order to burn down a mosque in Hastings, East Sussex. This epitomises the inherent violence that is depicted within Tommy Robinson’s loyal supporters. Even Nick Griffin, Chairman of the British Nationalist Party and most likely one of the most hated people in the country described Tommy Robinson and his men as ‘‘Good-hearted morons’’. A back handed compliment it may be, but it altogether shows the real perception of the English Defence league, and the ultimate reason as to why Yaxley-Lennon finally relinquished his stranglehold over the EDL. Personally, I don’t think that the EDL are here to stay. Tommy Robinson was undoubtedly the beating heart of the right-wing organisation. Now that both Robinson and Kevin Carroll have said farewell to their band of merry thugs, there is no organisation, no one to take the reins of a political party that is desperate for guidance and direction. In the end, the majority of people who make up the EDL are predominately white, working-class men who make up only a fragment of the population, which David Cameron calls a ‘multicultural society’. This means that no major political group, not even the BNP will give political or financial support to a group that will cause more trouble than they’re worth. THE
17-year-old Rainy Milo is mixing her own form of R&B from the suburbs of London. Fusing jazz instrumentals with soulful hip-hop beats, Milo’s sound reflects a surprisingly wide range of influences. “I’m a massive Britney fan!” she exclaims. “I was cleaning out my room the other day and found a little cassette tape of ‘I’m a Slave 4 U’, that was probably one of the first records I had.” Other artists such as N.E.R.D and The Fugees who have stripped away the boundaries of musical genre with their music have inspired Rainy’s new hybrid of sound. When I first met Rainy Milo we were in the middle of a heat wave, which in London means anything above 23 degrees. “Last night I was on the verge of switching hotels, this city just doesn’t understand air conditioning” Rainy’s manager declared as I gulped back another glass of lukewarm water. Rainy’s manager is American and used to the fierce gusts of artificial wind that greet you upon entering all buildings. Rainy appeared from the changing rooms sporting a full white tracksuit paired with an oriental style yellow jacket and bright purple fur trimmings. I stared blankly at her and thought to myself, ‘How on earth does she look good in that?’ She was a vision even in 24 degrees of blistering heat. “I’ve always been into fashion” Rainy insisted. “Mainly because of my mum” she continued.
Rainy’s mother was born in South America during the 1960’s and raised her in London within a home that echoed to the sounds of jazz and had cupboards filled with cute pinafore dresses. “My mum hasn’t thrown any of her clothes out since she was 18, she can’t bear to let things go. I sit on the cushions in my front room and they are rock hard because they are stuffed with clothes” I froze in awe. Not even Ikea could think of a more innovative system of storage. For Rainy, personal style clearly filters into her overall image as a musician, but she insists it’s still all about the music. Dropping out of the Brit School at age 16 to pursue a music career on her own, Rainy indeed has the soul of a superstar. “I left early because I wanted to do my own thing. We were all there to learn but I already knew how to write songs and I just felt it was something no one could really ever teach me.”

How was it putting yourself out there and establishing your music? Well I’ve been doing this for quite some time, because I had a band before I went solo called Lorena B, and we’ve been together now for 4 years so it’s like ever since I remember myself I’ve been releasing music and performing and doing gigs and stuff so it feels kind of natural. But also the fact that I’m doing this all by myself now, its new but also kind of scary because you’re the only focus so it’s really rewarding.
I read an article about you, where they described your music as ‘panic pop and MIA- esque’ – how would you describe your sound? I don’t really know how to describe my music and I don’t really like to describe it either because I don’t like to categorise it. I really try to just do whatever I feel, it changes a lot. My first track was really slow and weird kind of vibe, lots of pitch shifting and stuff. And then I started doing lots of hip-hop, rap trap kind of things. Kind of just make music depending on how I feel.
How would you describe your personal style? I think my main thing is the fact that I really like to get inspired by new things all the time and you can feel it through my music and in my look. I like to change my appearance and my style and my vibe like each and every time. I think that you can mostly see it in my videos, and each one has a different vibe. I find it exciting for me, and when I was a little girl, which was a long time ago unfortunately, I looked up to singers and their style and the way they were reinventing their style, and right now I’m super inspired by Manga. If you had to pick someone to collaborate with, who would it be and why? I think it would be Hudson Mohawke, he is an amazing producer and he has done a few tracks with Azalea Banks and Lunis. It might come out at the end of the year but we’re looking at a video next year so from there thats kinda where Im taking it.

What other London Talent do you think we should be looking out for? I would say definitely look out for Baishe Kings. How long have you lived in Balham? My whole life basically, apart from when I lived in New York! I went to school here and always stayed around the area. What’s your fondest memory of growing up here? Just playing on the street, I had a lot of friends around here growing up so we spent the summer playing outside and in the parks. What would you say to convince someone to move

into the area? I would say that it’s very lively and there are a lot of nice places to eat and drink. You don’t have to go into central London to get a bit of nightlife but also it’s got a nice community feel to it. What the worst thing about the area? Rent prices! Best place to relax there? The parks, Wandsworth Common is quite relaxing. But also there are a lot of spa/massage places which I go to sometimes.
Is there a song that reminds you of the area? Just all of the songs that I listened to when I was growing up. All the 90s hits like TLC ‘Waterfalls’. Strangest thing that’s happened to you there? I found a lottery ticket once and won £100! www.iambabyblue.com
