MINISTERS TO SICK convene at St. John the Baptist parish, Westport, top, and St. I Pius X parish, South Yarmouth, bottom, for concurrent days of recollection. I
Ministers to sick attend recollection days "Come as you are.. .Ieave as you desire to be" was the. theme ~or recent days of recollectIOn for mlllisters to the sick, sponsored concurrently at St. John the Baptist parish, Westport, and St. Pius X parish, South Yarmouth, by the Diocesan Department of Pastoral Care for the Sick. Presenters in Westport were Rev. Francis McManus, SJ, and Sister Kathleen Schmith, RS M, chaplains at St. Luke's Hospital, New Bedford; and Sisters Shirley Agnew and Dympna Smith, RSM, chaplains respectively at Barnstable County and Tobey hospitals in Pocasset and Wareham; and at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis. Eighty-five ministers attended the Westport day and 74 were at South Yarmouth, said Sister Agnew, assistant diocesan director of pastoral care for the sick.
She said the day was intended to "nourish those involved in ministry and provide them with practical ideas of how to serve those in hospitals, nursing homes or confined to their own homes." The program included a guidedimagery meditation on the story of Jesus' encounter with a Samaritan woman at a well. The ministers were likened to the woman, who brought the good news of salvation to others after her meeting with Jesus. Those in attendance were also challenged to bring good news to those they served, evangelizing and witnessing to their Catholic faith, said Sister Agnew. She added that her department hopes to offer other opportunities for reflection to the pastoral ministers.
