"But it is apparent by now that is what ails music in the service of worship is only a ripple on the surface of the sea; beneath there is a churning, seething, boling ferment of error and disbelief." "There must be an affirmation of the sacred, and this must begin in the seminaries," he said. Msgr. Schuler said sacred music is necessary to foster vocations and to develop prayer life. Con'temporary pluralism, he said, seems to lead to a steady decrease in charity in the Church life. No institution and no community can tolerate unlimited pluralism, else it ceases to be a community and ceases to be a unified institution," Dr. Hitchcock noted. "This condition may already be close to achievement in the Catholic Church."

He said to deprive the seminarian of training in sacred music is to restrict his prayer life and hinder the development of spritual growth.
