Home missions
collection
this weekend
The traditional annual coHee tion for home missions among · Blacks and American Indians will be taken up at all Masses this weekend, according to Msgr. John J. Oliveira, diocesan direc tor of the Society for the Propa gation of the Faith. It is the oldest national ohurch collection in ,the United Slates, noted Msgr. Oliveira in a letter to diocesan Catholics.
"Since 1884," he wrote, "when glaring injustices and national neglect of these minorities were so evident, the church has pro vided evangelization' programs and support to untold numbers of Blacks and American Indian peo ple. . "Today the needs ,are greater than ever and we, the church of ,this time, must continue the task begun a century ago. "The annual collection for our home.missions among Blacks and Native Americans will be taken up on the first weekend of Lent. Your support is needed again to sustain the work of home mis sionaries in over 118 dioceses, serving two peoples rich in cul ture and tradition, yet too often poor and neglected. "I urge you to make a real sacrifice gift to the Home Mis sions Collection, one as Pope John Paul TI has said - 'not just from your aJbundance, but from your substance.' " Also discussing home mission needs, Msgr. Paul A. Lenz, na tional director of the program', said that aU money collected is given in grants, with overhead expenses being met by interest accumulated on deposits made between semiannual grant dis · bursements. He cited among projects aided by the collection the work of sisters and Eskimo permanent · deacons in priestless areas of Maska; evangelization in the di ocese of Gallup, iN.M., where 45 percent of Catholics are Ameri can Indians: and s1Upport of Black Catholic schools in Miss issippi.
