Rat control operations in the Hawdon and Andrews valleys – Arthur’s Pass National Park From 4 November 2014, the Department of Conservation, Rangiora Office, intends to apply cereal baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) in the Hawdon and Andrews valleys to control rats to protect the nationally endangered orange-fronted parakeet. Monitoring shows that rat numbers in these areas are increasing and will be a major threat to parakeets in this coming breeding season. These are two of only four valleys where orange-fronted parakeets can still be found on mainland New Zealand. Description of the area Hawdon and Andrews valleys, Arthur’s Pass National Park. Approx 12,000 hectares. Method of Control Cereal baits containing the pesticide will be distributed by helicopter over the above area. The baits are cylindrical pellets approx 16 mm in diameter, dyed green and cinnamon lured. This pesticide is poisonous to humans and domestic animals. Always remember:
A Fulton Secretary Kate Valley Landfill Community Trust
