JERSEY BOYS

Flamenco feast for Globe Theatre show By FRANKIE WEBB Officially Paul Knight is retired, but at 70 something, his life is anything but retiring. Levin has been his home since 1969 after taking up the position of senior lecturer in Japanese at Massey University. Since retiring Paul is now immersed in a new culture but is not turning his back on Japan. “In my early twenties I was browsing in a music store and listened to a record by flamenco guitarist Sabicas,” Paul, a classical flautist at the time, said. “It was like a drug and I was hooked.” Trying to find a tutor or even a flamenco guitar was almost impossible. It wasn’t until 10 years later in Japan, where flamenco is more popular than anywhere else outside Spain, he was able to fulfil his ambition. Later he returned to New Zealand to begin teaching at Massey University. “I wondered about starting a performing group in

Palmerston North,” he said. He advertised for contact by people interested in learning and performing the flamenco dance. The response was such Paul invited professional flamenco dancers to New Zealand to conduct workshops. Fiesta Flamenca was created and travelled the country performing and performed in Seville at the New Zealand Embassy. Over the years members moved away, one to Spain and received recognition from the Spanish Government for her contribution to flamenco. Others started a new group, Desde Sevilla, in Wellington and the two groups have continued to work together. They have been rehearsing at Levin’s Little Theatre preparing for a show “Flamenco — The Fire of Spain” to present in Palmerston North’s Globe Theatre later this month.
