CAT & KITTENS
4 year old neutered male Staffy cross Smithfield, neat nature with lots of personality and character, Riddick is a clean house dog he is not destructive and doesn’t dig holes but he does chase cats if they run, he can be calm and gentle with the right handling but he can also be very strong and energetic if aloud to be or is encouraged to get over excited so he will need the right owner who is active but calm and firm.
JESS
MAXIMUS Approx 16 month old neutered white male Boxer, sweet funny nature, his hearing is very poor but he can sometimes hear a little bit, loves playing and having fun and would suit being a house dog with a owner who has plenty of time for him
Summerset Animal Rescue Fundraiser
Summerset by the Ranges once again came forward to help animals by raising funds. ‘The residents at the care-centre of Summerset are passionate about animals and for their wellbeing’, said Diversional Therapist Val Franklin. ‘It is the residents who pick a charity and it is always the animals.’ Raising money for a good cause is a yearly event that residents get behind, through hard work, knitting dog coats with random pieces of yarn, inviting family and friends to high tea and the good old raffle, which raised the princely sum of $250.
18 mth old spayed mixed breed dog, very intelligent with heaps of energy and enthusiasm would suit some one with experience to train her, nice nature and keen to learn.
Please phone Cindy at the Levin Shelter 06 368 8569 or 027 256 3965 Good responsible homes urgently needed!
Cindy Puketapu from Animal Rescue in Levin thanked everyone involved. ‘The money will certainly come in handy’, said Mrs Puketapu. Mrs Puketapu has worked for animals for decades, giving comfort and a kind human touch. It is a sad fact that animals get neglected but with a lot of TLC most animals can get re-housed with loving families.

Following on from last month, now is a good time to elaborate on arthritis. The cold, damp conditions that come with winter can often lead to a worsening in the pain and discomfort felt by our elderly pets. One in every five dogs may be affected by arthritis at some stage in their life. Does your dog have any of the following signs? • Stiffness or difficulty getting up after rest • Difficulty with movements such as climbing stairs or getting into the car • Limping on one or more legs, which may ease after your dog has ‘warmed up’

Cats with arthritis often stop jumping up onto chairs or benches, and can become ‘grumpy’ when sore. Some cats will often eat less when in pain, resulting in weight loss. If you have recognised any of these symptoms in your dog or cat, then it is time for your pet to have a check-up with your vet. Osteoarthritis (Degenerative Joint Disease, or DJD) in dogs and cats is almost always a progressive and irreversible condition; if left untreated, as time passes your pet’s pain will worsen. Fortunately, there are many ways that we can manage this condition and help most pets to maintain a good quality of life. After an examination, your vet will recommend a treatment plan that will best help your pet. Options include:• Prescription diets • Chondroprotectants (supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin that promote cartilage repair) • Anti-inflammatory medications • Pentosan injections that improve joint health • Weight loss, as excess weight causes an increase in the ‘wear-and-tear’ on joints If in doubt, check it out! Our friendly team at Levin and Horowhenua Vets are here to help – give us a call.
