Big day all about celebrating dads By TANYA WOOD Dads have a good excuse for ditching the chores on Sunday, April 13, and enjoying a fun, action-packed day out with their children. Dad’s Day Out at Solway Park, Levin, is a free event with children’s activities designed for all age groups from 18 months to teens, including kite and wooden kit-set toy making, little digs, bouncy castle, ‘Mission Impossible’ obstacle course, play dough, cycling skill workshops, hot rod cars, Harley rides and ‘dunk a dad’. There will also be spot prizes, live music, free sausage sizzle and free icecreams for the children. But behind the free event is a serious message. Organised by Levin South Neighbourhood Policing Team, Levin Early Years and Barnardos, the aim is to actively encourage fathers to become more engaged with their children. Levin Early Years project leader Deborah Loveridge said it is important that fathers understand their involvement is key to their child’s development and wellbeing right from birth. ‘‘Children need interaction with their dad or a significant male role model. Sometimes dads are too busy working or don’t know how to spend time with their children. ‘‘It does not mean spending money. Time spent playing games, going to the park, reading to children or simply just talking and taking an interest in what they’ve been doing that day is really important. ‘‘It can’t and shouldn’t always be left up to the mother.’’ Funded by SKIP (Strategies with Kids/Information for Parents), Ms

Call for return of health equipment If you or someone you know has loan equipment from the hospital they have been meaning to return, now is the time to do it. MidCentral Health is having an amnesty for all loan equipment being returned. ‘‘I’d particularly like to see shower stools, over toilet frames, commodes, wheelchairs, bath boards,

walking sticks, ‘helping hands/easy reaches’, and crutches returned,’’ said loan equipment manager Neil Aitcheson. ‘‘However, virtually all equipment is in short supply.’’ There are patients waiting for some equipment. Any loan equipment that people have finished with, can either be

left at the Loan Equipment Store at Palmerston North Hospital, Palmerston North Hospital main reception desk or Horowhenua Health Centre. If you are unable to return items, phone Materials Management at Palmerston North Hospital on (06) 350-8990, to arrange for collection.
