Fabulous Foxton LOOKING BACK

Hotels have been integral part of Foxton Foxton historian Tony Hunt concludes his series on public houses in Foxton. Mr T U Cook first made his mark in Foxton in 1855 having the first wharf built there to commence trading activities. His original wharf further upstream at Paiaka was severely damaged in the Wellington earthquake of the same year. By 1856 his new trading post included the Adelaide Hotel, which later moved to Main Street to become the Family Hotel. Cook’s first competition came around 1866 with the opening of the White Hart Hotel. It stood on the corner of Avenue Road and Hall Street, now the site of the Manawatu Hotel. James Whyte was ‘mine host’ at the Avenue Road establishment before building another hotel on the corner of Main and what became Whyte Street, in 1876. George Gray set up the

The original Manawatu and Whytes Hotels met their end (as did many other wooden build-

ings in the town) through fire. The Manawatu had to be rebuilt in 1900 after its inferno and

Whytes in 1918. In 1892-93 the original Foxton Family Hotel was demolished by the new owners, the T G McCarthy Trust and the two-story section of the present hotel was constructed. The Manawatu, Post Office and Foxton Hotels had single storey bar additions to them in the 1950s, which extended them to their present day size. After it’s rebuild, Whytes Hotel was expanded to include the upper story of the Moutoa Building that stood next to it which provided the guest rooms for the hotel. The owners at the time of the rebuild renamed the Whytes as the Easton Hotel but this name never caught on with the locals and it remained Whytes until 2001 when most of it was demolished to enable the building of Foxton New World. The new building was designed around the brick hotel facade which ensured the historic significance on Main Street was maintained.
