Council gets behind development board By PETER FRANKLIN The green light has been given to the formation of an economic development board by Horowhenua District Council. A council vote on Wednesday was unanimous. This was after a muchanticipated presentation by council’s economic development manager Shanon Grainger and members of the advisory group, that was established to piece together an economic growth strategy over the next three years. Their work was presented to councillors and members of the public, and was received with enthusiasm and support. Horowhenua District mayor Brendan Duffy said the strategy was our way forward for more meaningful jobs, investment opportunities for local businesses and general prosperity for all in the area. ‘‘2014 is going to be a great year, lots of good things are going to happen,’’ he said. ‘‘Once the strategy starts to take effect, the district can look forward to a financially better future with more businesses expanding and new ones being established throughout the district, plus a much-needed increase in full, casual and part-time jobs

UNDERSTANDING THE KEY: Horowhenua District Council economic development manager Shanon Grainger says understanding the district and its business community is the key to building a successful economic plan. being created.’’ Mr Grainger said nothing would happen over night but, by having a workable plan, the district can look forward

to a positive future. The strategy presented highlighted five key goals: ■ Increased investment in the local economy.

■ More local jobs. ■ Higher-skilled workers. ■ Increased household income. ■ To enhance the reputation of the district. While the key function of the board will be to attract new business to the district, council’s role will be to ensure that the infrastructure is in place. Mr Grainger said for the strategy to succeed it required commitment. This commitment can only be made if the people it supports believe in its ability to create positive change, he says. Former deputy mayor and Horowhenua Learning Centre representative on the advisory group, Barry Judd, said he was excited with the prospects that the economic strategy could achieve for the district. He said this was a great opportunity for the district as a whole to move forward, creating new business opportunities and employment.
