ILISONI Vonomatairatu hopes the judge doesn’t spy his calf sleeping on the job. Ilisoni doesn’t live on a farm and is only able to participate in agricultural day thanks to Hilton Williams and partner Kate who have ‘given’ him the calf to care for as his own.

Shannon was out in force to support the school’s agricultural day. For some children the pleasure of caring for and presenting a calf was a special privilege made available by the generosity of a local dairy farming family. The Williams family makes calves available for children, who otherwise would never have the opportunity. ‘‘This is something the

Williams family have done for many years,’’ teacher Shelley Fuller said. ‘‘It is such an amazing, special thing for the children who do it.’’ Students are chosen by the school and ‘‘given’’ a calf to care for as if it was their own. ‘‘They go out every day and feed the calves, groom them and care for them right up until ag day.’’ They often compete against the Williams’ own children. This fosters the essence of why the club was started.

JUNIOR AG DAY The Horowhenua Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club was founded in 1930 to promote the education of primary school children in the responsibility of caring for animals and plants. Over the past few years the club has been concerned with the high cost of milk powder, and that some of the stock hadn’t been fed as well as they should have been. ‘‘Certainly not the case this year,’’ secretary Carol Christensen said. ‘‘In fact it has been the opposite, in some cases with some lambs succumbing to bloat through over feeding.’’ Grass growth this year has been exceptional and livestock weights have been high which may be a contributing factor to the growth in the number of entries at local ag days. ‘‘It is great to see entries up this year,’’ Mrs Christensen said. Local schools participating in group finals are Tokomaru School, Manakau School, Shannon School, Waitohu/ Otaki College, Ohau School, Te Horo School, Opiki School, Poroutawhao School and Koputaroa School. There are 13 trophies to be presented at the group finals today. Champions from all of Horowhenua school ag days come together at the Levin A P and I Showgrounds today for group final judging starting at 10.30am, everyone is welcome.
