Chance to share Shannon school stories By FRANKIE WEBB

LVN110713fwshannon3

THANK YOU: Shannon School pupils thanking the Shannon community for helping them get to know their town and school.

Preparations for Shannon’s 125th Jubilee in 2014 are well in hand as some ex-pupils have been sharing stories of their time at school with present day students. Interviewing longstanding Shannon residents and, in particular, anyone associated with the school has been a great learning curve for today’s pupils. A sumptuous morning tea greeted invited guests at a powhiri and thank you event at the school in recognition of the help they have given towards the jubilee in a variety of ways. For ex-students it was a chance to reminisce. ‘‘Some of us loved the school so

much we’ve come back,’’ teased school kaumatua Hui Sprott. ‘‘I went to school here, lived in Shannon all my life, and now I work at the school.’’ Eleanor Harper had a similar story. ‘‘I left Shannon School in 1959 to go to college, but I’m back here working in the school.’’ The sense of community camaraderie was huge in the 1940s and 50s. ‘‘Everyone knew everyone,’’ Hui said. ‘‘Everyone looked out for everyone else. There’s a lot of new people in Shannon now.’’ However, she doesn’t believe it is to the detriment of the town. ‘‘I still love it here, I wouldn’t live anywhere else.’’

Quin Roofing Quin Roofing has been servicing the building industry in Levin since 1991, with quite a few of the original staff still here. We’re not sure if that is a good or bad thing, but we do try hard to give everyone the best service we can. We have a lot of manufacturing skills and equipment. We manufacture and supply roofing materials direct from the factory in Coventry Street, including flashings, and fixings. We can help with most questions you have, and if we don’t know the answer, we can

find the answers from the great team of roofers that are out there doing the hard yards replacing and fixing the roofs in the region. Quin Roofing can also help you with building your next garage, sleep-out, farm building, bach or even garden shed. And we have a great garage door service team, who can help with repair to your old garage door or installing a new door complete with the latest technology in automatic door openers. Thank you to all our customers, staff and suppliers.

When it comes to a local business employing over 30 staff and providing the best service and competitive prices, Mitchpine Products are definitely a cut above the rest. First of all it’s a family business, started by Keith Mitchell 35 years ago. Keith passed away two years ago and the business is now run by his son Grant (Butch) Mitchell, and his son Lee is now learning the ropes. That’s three generations of Mitchell’s so they know what they are talking about when it comes to supplying local farmers, trades and the handyman or woman. The personal touch starts when you arrive. You deal direct with staff who will do just about anything for you. There’s a big range of handgraded posts, battens, poles and gates on site and timber in just about every size and grade.

In fact there’s more than 300 products. For the home gardener there’s a big range of timber for retaining walls, fencing, sawn posts and a new range of bollards. It’s all cut, dried and treated on site then the company’s fleet of trucks will deliver it to your place. Recession? What recession? Mitchpine are positive and expanding. They are installing a new mill at their 13.5 hectare site just 10km north of Levin. This new mill has been specifically designed to cut 7.5 metre lengths of timber, a rare product with an ever increasing demand. Business is looking good with consistent sales across all markets. Mitchpine is a family run business with old-fashioned values on quality and service and a hands on approach. As the boys say, ‘‘big enough to supply and small enough to care’’.
