Stone seawall needed says expert Beachlands resident Len Lavas knows how to build seawalls. His company, Auckland Stonemasons, has built hundreds of them across the country. And he says a big, solid, stone seawall is what Maraetai beach needs to protect the erosion-prone foreshore, the sand and the road. The Lavas family are third generation stonemasons. Len is director and master stonemason with the company. The best known example of his company’s work locally is the seawall at Sunkist Bay Beach, Beachlands. “We won the contract and suggested this wall, which would look a lot nicer and we wouldl do it slightly cheaper. They said ‘no problem’. It would be impossible to do that these days, the resource consent wouldn’t allow it,” says Len. The wall was built about 20 years ago and since then has withstood raging storms with waves crashing over the top and a huge slip several years ago which collapsed on top of the wall. The wall remained intact. It has been re-grouted just once. The wall is built of solid rock and concrete with rock right through. “The same storm that hit Maraetai hit this wall. Look at the difference!,” says Len. “The timber wall at Maraetai was a major mistake. Timber walls never work in the sea. They always fail. Stone walls will fail, but only if they are not built right. “ That’s a beautifully built timber wall at Maraetai but it’s just not right for what is needed. Because it is built vertically the waves don’t ride up the wall, they smash into it. Part of the wave action goes up and part goes down. The part that goes down swirls around and sucks sand out from bottom of the wall.” Len has a design for a seawall at Maraetai Beach. He proposed the wall a few years ago when the council was considering what to do following an earlier round of storm damage. “I suggested a wall like this [Sunkist Bay] but at a 45 degree angle to deflect the waves, and along the top so the so road wouldn’t flood at high tide.” • TO PAGE 2

"Bringing water to your community for 30 years"

Road safety improvements are to be carried out around Brookby School following discussions between the school and Auckland Transport. Through surveys and meetings conducted with the school’s community, a number of road safety issues were raised and improvement works were identified in the neighbouring roads to improve safety and accessibility. As a result, on both Brookby Road and West Road, Auckland Transport is proposing to install red coloured surfacing with ‘SCHOOL’ road markings and additional Active Warning School Zone signs on all approaches to the school. The project also includes installing road markings around the roundabout.

Lucky escape as tree falls across lawn

Beachlands Maraetai

Road safety plans for Brookby

A Beachlands family had a lucky escape last week when a freak wind gust toppled a pohutukawa tree across their front lawn. “We heard a loud noise about 10pm and our daughter Anna, who was staying the night rushed out to see what had happened,” says Sandy Birkenhead. “The tree was right across the lawn but it missed the house and the carport.” She says usually a campervan is parked in the driveway or her daughter parks her car there when she stays. “Luckily she’d left her car on the road that night.” The falling tree is the third in a string of incidents that have plagued Sandy in just over a week. An upstairs hot water cylinder burst flooding a linen cupboard and leaking into the kitchen below. “We had to buy a new cylinder and a new stove now this is the third thing and hopefully the last,” says Sandy.

2 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (August 22nd 2014)

Let’s put politics back into our election campaign THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz General elections are an irksome time for small community newspapers like the PC Times. How, with limited resources, do we do justice to a nationwide election campaign? We’ve tried various approaches over the years. These include letting candidates write their own articles… yawn. The past couple of elections we’ve attended meet -the-candidate meetings and tried to report on those. But these events are very stage-managed and it’s hard to gain much of an impression about either the candidates or their policies. So this year we’ve decided to take the plunge and actually meet and interview each Hunua candidate one-onone. This is not as easy as it sounds. Just finding them is a mission. This isn’t their fault. Hunua is a huge electorate and candidates by necessity spend most of their time in the major population areas such as Pukekohe. Their time in our sparsely populated part of the world is limited. THE BIBLE SAYS: But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:57)

to focus on because most of the mainstream media is already doing that. And the danger is that in so doing, we lose sight of what elections are actually for. This can be dangerous because we then allow ourselves to become ill informed about the Bigger Picture. We will be asking our Hunua candidates to tell us a bit about themselves so we can get a small picture of who they are as people. We will be asking them how much they know about their party’s policies, which of those policies they want to champion, which do they believe are important to the people of our district, what do they want to achieve should they end up being elected, and what is their vision for the future of our nation. “Gotcha” politics may be fun for those in the media, but at the end of the day what the people of New Zealand want to know is that their families are going to live and grow-up in a country that is caring, safe, prosperous, treats everyone equally and provides quality jobs, education and health care. We hope to start introducing you to our Hunua candidates as of next week’s PC Times.

Barging in sand only solution to Maraetai erosion This is my view of the erosion problem at Maraetai: Back in 1957 I lived with my grandmother, Mrs Bregman, in Rosemary Cottage on Maraetai Drive. This was the second house from the eastern end of the houses on Maraetai Drive. Back then Maraetai Drive was a gravel road along the top of the sandbar in front of the houses. Between the sandbar and the houses from the Central Store (Birch’s) towards the eastern end of the beach was a depression which used to collect water in the winter and during very high tides. Just to the seaward side of the large pohutukawa was a large pond which remained most of the year (good for catching frogs and tadpoles in).

What’s more, none of them - except the National Party candidate – have a dog’s show of actually winning, so it is understandable that the amount of time, effort and resources they are willing to put into a futile battle is going to have its limits. The candidates themselves no longer decide the election anyway. Under MMP, it’s the Party Vote that determines who governs the country. Electorate candidates are cannon fodder. Their job is primarily to stump up the Party Vote, except in electorates that are genuinely marginal (and Hunua isn’t one of them). They are a small cog in a very large wheel. However, I still believe voters like to put faces to parties and policies, so for that reason we will once again be focusing on the electorate candidates . Don’t get too excited though, because there are quite a few issues you won’t be reading about in these profiles. You won’t be reading about leaked emails, Kim Dotcom, dirty politics, racist jokes, gender apologies and Whale Oil. It’s not that these issues aren’t important. The moral integrity of those who govern says a lot about who we are as a nation. But these are not what the PC Times wants

On the seaward side of the road in front of the houses was a large shell bank which had grass on it in places. Locals pulled their launches on to the top of the shell bank for winter storage and maintenance. The beach was shelly, not sandy as it is today. Sea grass grew on the mudflats out to where the boats were moored in the summer. Back then, from memory, there was the two lane road, a shell bank with patches of grass on it which was wide enough for launches to be left at the top at right angles to the road. The large rock in the beach at the end of the houses only showed when a storm dragged sand down the beach and as children it was a big job to dig a channel around it so that it became an island at high water on spring (king) tides. So what changed and what went wrong?

Maraetai was a real trip away from any large urban population. Once cars became more common and more people came out, the shellfish beds were raped by people over-fishing the resource. This caused a lack of replacement shell as the existing shell broke down naturally and became sand. The road was widened and sealed. Iron implements were used to dig for shellfish. Vehicles were used very occasionally on the sand. Worst of all, in recent times, the council allowed contractors to use machines to push and scrape sand back up the beach to try to stop erosion along the edge of the road. Shellfish only live in the top 150mm of sand from the middle of the beach to the low tide mark. The very machines which are supposed to be repairing the erosion

From the Pohutukawa Coast Times of August 20 1999... • Orere Pt residents and Manukau City Council can’t agree on the best way of dealing with the small community’s flooding problems. Manukau Consultants Ltd has now rejected an alternative flood management proposal put forward by the local residents association. • The annual Beachlands v Maraetai rugby clash has run into a slight hitch. The Maraetai team seems to have gone into hiding. “We’re ready, but where’s the opposition?,” Beachlands coach Ivan Lavas wants to know. • Clevedon Drama Club is hoping for a revival. The club has struggled in recent times and for the past few years a lack of members has meant it has had to combine with neighbouring Hunua to put on productions.

are actually making it worse for the immediate future. They not only crush and kill the juvenile shellfish but any which survive are pushed too far up the beach where they die. This leaves no, or insufficient, shellfish to grow and then die to replace the shells which are breaking down naturally. Consequently we end up with less and less sand so the waves come further up the beach and the erosion gets worse. My belief is that to remedy the current situation the only way is to barge sand in and

build up the beach so that the sand is about half a metre higher than the current seawall and maintain this for two to three metres out from the wall. Build up only half the beach – from the creek by the boat club down to the end of the houses – at the start then in a few years’ time when the shellfish have had a chance to recolonise this new sand, then finish the rest of the beach. This way we would be working with nature instead of against it. ROGER WALTON Beachlands

Stone seawall built to last • FROM PAGE 1

But at that time it needed approval from the then Auckland Regional Council. The ARC didn’t like stone seawalls . “They would only allow a timber wall which is what they got. And they certainly didn’t get a permanent structure!,” says Len. He says sand dunes and planting won’t work, either. “There’s not enough room. It gets used by hundreds of thousands of people every summer who walk over it. It needs a permanent stone wall, constructed properly so there are no issues with it.” He agrees that stone seawalls are expensive but makes the point that, when built properly, they will last a very long time. “They’ve already spent a fortune along that beach with retaining walls and walkways and it’s just a big waste of money…all because the ARC said ‘no’ to a stone seawall. “It’s one of the most used beaches in New Zealand, yet one more big storm and the road will go.”

First female Crew Chief for Maraetai

Visiting students want to lend a hand

The crew at Coastguard Maraetai are falling into line for their first ever female Crew Chief. Kara Gribble, a keen boatie and fisherwoman, moved from Mt Albert to Maraetai with her partner, boat builder Izzy Saraiva, in 2012. The lifestyle change has exceeded Kara’s expectations as she was promoted to Crew Chief at Coastguard Maraetai in January this year. The only thing that hasn’t quite come together for the couple is the refurbishment of their 1980s Sea Nymph Gullwing, which Izzy is doing in his spare time. “He repaired the boat beautifully, then we bought a 1970s motor from back in the days when motors were coloured orange. I repainted it orange again so we could be rescued if we got into trouble. But we haven’t got that far yet. The motor looks terrible and it doesn’t work!,” Kara says.

Visiting Capenwray Bible School students are looking for people to help out while they are in Beachlands in the first week of September. “If you know someone who could do with an extra pair of hands to do some jobs around their home then we want to hear from you,” says co-ordinator Jackie Matthews. “We will be accepting nominations in the form of a short explanation - no more than 300 words.” More than 150 overseas students visit the Capenwray campus in Cambridge each year. As part of their study, a group of young people spends a week on the Pohutukawa Coast running lunchtime programmes at Beachlands and Maraetai primary schools and helping out at several weekly community events. “We will try to fulfil as many of the nominations as we can based on time and resources,” says Jackie. Please email your nomination to jacsmatthew@ gmail.com.

However, managing the crew at Coastguard Maraetai is proving to be more rewarding, says Kara. Usually the Crew Chief role is awarded to a member with a minimum of three years’ service. But Kara made her way through a series of six courses to become qualified as operational in short order. She was soon also recognised for her management skills. “At work I am a textile buyer and I am a manager in my field,” she explains. “I thought Coastguard would be a ‘roll along and join in’ activity. It is quite the opposite, it is a well-oiled machine.” Crew Chief is a management and organisational role, leading the 44 members who all have different skill sets. Kara manages the three crews and six skippers on a three week rolling roster. Kara says she has learned a lot about com-

municating with different types of people and values the experience. “At first it was daunting trying to project that confidence at crew meetings when you don’t know your subject back to front, but everyone is being super supportive. Now they are incredibly well behaved and every time they speak they do whatever I say!” “I am of the newschool – emails, online blog. But now I know not everyone works that way and there are other ways of communicating. “The best thing is if everyone is fully informed so I do a monthly ‘what’s coming up newsletter’ so everyone knows what is happening.” One of her highlights to date was organising this year’s awards dinner, prompting her to consider her future in management and the community. Kara says she now

Kara Gribble is Coastguard Maraetai’s first woman Crew Chief. aims to apply her skills “He got it done just to event management, after Christmas but the hoping to further her motor still won’t go. I dream by managing guess I will have to find events in the community a new motor.” she has quickly learned to love. As for the good-looking but dysfunctional family boat, Kara is guardedly hopeful.

Men’s soccer settle for draw

BMAFC Men’s 1st had to settle for a 0-0 draw when they met Glen Eden at Te Puru Park on Saturday. BMAFC went into the game as under-dogs having lost 4-0 when the two teams faced-off earlier in the season. However, it was the home side who dominated from the onset, but failure to capitalise on goal scoring opportunities resulted in a stalemate and meant they lost out on claiming the three points. Paul Stephens, BMAFC coach, lamented the wasted opportunities, but praised his team for how far they’ve come this season. “Before today, this game was the one I was most concerned about”, says Stephens. “But our guys rose up to the challenge.”

He says recent results show how much his squad has improved and attributes it to the “great work” being put in by the team. Glen Eden’s coach, Michael Semp, says BMAFC “deserved the win”. “The whole team did their club proud. They played really great football and are a credit to you [Paul Stephens]. “No matter what we tried or changed, we couldn’t get a grip on the game.” Man of the match was awarded to stalwart Eric Schlaffer who battled hard for the full 90 minutes ensuring the BMAFC defence was impenetrable. The next home game is against West Auckland, 30th August, 2.45 pm at Te Puru Park

Maraetai Beach School recently held its annual cross country race at Omana Regional Park on a typical winter’s rainy day. Pictured is the start of the Year 4 Boys’ race. It was the first time the school had used the park. Usually the race is held around the streets of Maraetai. “We felt it was a bit of a Kiwi rite of passage to run on fields where there was a bit of mud and dirt,” says Year 5-6 teacher Lexi Andrews. Teachers also took part in the races as well as providing the “tail end charlies” to herd home any stragglers. Teachers also manned checkpoints while parents braved the weather to watch their children run. The rainy day meant a planned lunch at the park was cancelled to allow everyone to get back inside and get warm and dry after the event. Each age group ran a different course. Year 8 children ran the 3.1 km perimeter track, Year 7 ran 2.8 kms, Year 6 ran 2.6 kms, Year 5 ran 2.4 kms, Year 4 ran 2.1 kms, Year 3 ran 1.8 kms, Year 2 ran 800 metres and Years 0-1 ran 600 metres. “It was a fantastic day and we’d really like to say a huge thanks to the Omana Park Rangers for making the park available to us on the day,” says Lexi.

Another Tremlett adaptation on stage Creativity keeps flowing out of the Beachlands Log Cabin, this time with a new play from The Log Cabin Theatre Group, penned by Beachlands student Elliot Tremlett. Elliot, who studies Classics and History at Auckland University, was captivated by the age old story of Jason and The Argonauts, adapting the tale to suit the growing group of talent that is the Log Cabin Theatre Group. In March the troupe successfully removed all seriousness and some of the tragedy from Shakespeare’s Othello in Elliot’s ‘lighthearted and modern Cockney musical,’ version. Again he has taken a humourous approach to Jason and the Argonauts, a complex saga of challenge, adventure, love, betrayal and revenge based on the myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece, dating back to 1300 BC. In the original tale, which is sometimes known as an analogy for the colonisation of the Black Sea, the characters are larger than life from gods to kings; but in the Log Cabin version everyone is a local. Codirector, Jackie Matthews, promises that everyone in the audience will recognise someone amongst the dancers, cast and crew, aged from seven to over 40. While the troupe has grown considerably since its last production, the players were still short of an actor for Hercules, so playwright Elliot took on the role as well as being co-director.

Jackie says the audience can expect plenty of humour and audience participation, features becoming trademarks of the Log Cabin Theatre Group. “There are lots of little things in it which make it crazy humour, it’s left field all the time,” she says. “There is something for everyone, it is family entertainment although our witch is scary – look out for her!” Jackie also promises plenty of well-known tunes to keep the audience humming, as their songs are all covers with brand new lyrics, based on the tunes of ‘I’m on my way’, ‘You can’t touch this’ and ‘We are the champions’. Performances will be next Thursday 28, Friday 29 and Saturday 30 at 7pm with a 2pm matinee on Sunday 31 August at the Beachlands Memorial Hall. CASUAL VACANCY FOR AN ELECTED TRUSTEE

Retired Maraetai pastor Don Hopkins, pictured with wife Edna, was recently bestowed the title Pastor Emeritus at a special celebration service at Beachlands Baptist Church. Don has close to 30 years association with the local church as a former pastor and for the past 25 years as an elder. “The honour is not an automatic one but is in recognition of Don’s exceptional and outstanding service to our church,” explained current pastor Neil Hamilton. Don, now 86, has given more than 60 years of service, pastoring in six churches during that time. After graduating from Baptist College Don took up his first role as a minister at Waihi Baptist in 1953 where he spent five years. He went on to pastor at Otahuhu, then at two Christchurch churches and Ranui in West Auckland before being appointed pastor at Beachlands Baptist in 1987. Don and his wife Edna have lived in Maraetai since that time but their association with the seaside settlement goes back more than 50 years when they visited their holiday cottage which later became their home. Don says he was “touched and grateful” to receive the honour. A former florist, Edna was presented with a large bouquet of flowers. Their children and grandchildren attended the special service. Don led his family in singing to the congregation. The couple are well-known in the community for their involvment in many local groups.

A casual vacancy has occurred on the Howick College board of trustees for an elected parent representative. The board has resolved under section 105 of the Education Act 1989 to fill the vacancy by selection. If ten percent or more of eligible voters on the school roll ask the board, within 28 days of this notice being published, to hold a by-election to fill the vacancy, then a by-election will be held. Any eligible voter who wishes to ask the board to hold a by-election should write to: Peter Jones Board of Trustees Howick College PO Box 38142 Howick Auckland 2145 By: 25th August 2014

A thank you note from the Clevedon Woolshed ... I’m pleased to advise that the store is to enter another phase: under the new ownership of Susan Alberts and her husband Jan (from Drury), who unlock the door for the first time this week. Susan has some wonderful plans for the future of the store, so be sure to call in, say hello and keep up with the changes! What will not change however, is product quality and the personal service for which the Woolshed is known. Pleased to say that longserving Karin Botica and Lynne Blyth both remain on staff and I wish Susan and her team every success in the future. Retirement beckons - and after 11 enjoyable years of working with exceptional people and meeting incredible new ones - I’m swopping my business hat for my old gardening one ! I’ll miss all my fabulous customers hugely and sincerely THANK YOU for your loyalty, support and smiles over the past decade. It’s been a pleasure and much fun! Take care. Sincerely, Susie Schroder
