Bike love for Newtown

Bike love is coming to Newtown as a new joint cycling initiative will be sited on the forecourt of the suburb’s former service station. The site at 224 Riddiford Street, which lies empty after Caltex sold it in 2014, has

been leased to two cycling organisations – repair workshop Mechanical Tempest and bicycle charity ReBicycle. Mechanical Tempest will now base themselves there, with ReBicycle being able to hold mechanical and donation days on site. Continued on page 2.

Bike workshops take over Caltex site Continued from page 1. The initiative is the result of the land owners negotiating a lease with the Newtown Festival Committee and Wellington City Council Community Liaison Officer Ray Tuffin. ReBicycle is a voluntary organisation which ‘upcycles’ donated second-hand bikes into safe, practical commuter bikes to give or loan to people who need them. Its co-ordinator Tessa Coppard said having the community facility was “fantastic”. “The owners have long-term plans but nothing for the next few years. “It’s a really good thing for Newtown.” The Mechanical Tempest Workshop has been operating out of a blue shipping container on the waterfront after moving from Abel Smith Street. It offers a space where tools and parts can be used to repair bicycles, with assistance if necessary. Like ReBicycle, the staff are volunteers, though it does receive council funding. Spokesman Abe Hollingsworth said despite Aro Valley being its “ideological home” the workshop members were keen to move to Newtown due to the effect the bypass had on cycling in the CBD. Tessa said it was ironic that what used to be a petrol station for motor vehicles was now

Give us Option E on cycleway, residents say The stoush over replacing the Island Bay cycleway has deepened, with a local resident accusing Wellington City councillors of denying people’s right to publicise their own proposals. Ann Smith said she was “appalled” that a poster for an unofficial fifth option for the cycleway was taken down at a council-run “pop-up shop” in the suburb’s shopping centre. An information kiosk had been established in one of the shops where locals could view the four options the council has proposed to replace the cycleway that is currently in place.

“I spoke to someone who had put up Option E and I asked where it was. I was told a councillor took it down.” The proposals have proved controversial as many residents want a fifth option – returning the cycleway to what it had been, with slight modifications. It is similar to Option A, but the crucial difference is that no carparks would go. “ T he est i mate d cost is $750,000. It would reseal the part that hasn’t been sealed, it would move back the bus stops and the cycleway would be half a metre wider,” Ann said.

The proposal would also consider extending the 30km/h speed limit and see the return of removed pedestrian crossings. Ann said she and other residents were not anti-cycling as they were committed to ensuring there was a safe cycleway in the area. But she believed it shouldn’t come at the expense of motorists. “There’s been a lack of transparency.” Councillor Diane Calvert, the council’s community planning and engagement portfolio leader, denied taking down the poster of option E, but said whoever did

Kirsty’s carpet bags top prize at art comp By Jamie Adams

Hataitai artist Kirsty Lillico will have plenty of money to further her career after winning the 2017 Parkin Drawing Prize. Kirsty’s work State Block was chosen as the winner out of 502 entries nationwide and 84 finalists at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts at the launch event last week. The award is $20,000, sponsored by arts patron and philanthropist Chris Parkin. Judge Seraphine Pick said Kirsty’s work was “challenging, brave and impressive”. “Her work appears to question high-density social housing and its liveability, inequality, affordability and the failure by privatisation to solve the current state housing crisis balanced with her interest in the post– depression era of International Brutalism-style of modern architecture and its aesthetics.” The competition, in associ-

ation with the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, aimed to play an important role in fostering New Zealand drawing practice. The academy said Kirsty was renowned for turning old carpet into sculptural objects based on Brutalist-style buildings and architectural plans. Her works have appeared in galleries in New Zealand and Australia. As well as being a visual artist, she has tutored at the School of Design and Fine Arts at Massey University in Wellington. Kirsty was “amazed” by the positive reception to the artwork. “I’m really pleased and very surprised. It’s a great recognition.” She said the inspiration for her design came from viewing a block of flats in Symonds Street in Auckland’s CBD. “I was interested in the legacy of the utopian idea of modern buildings.”

A planned forum aims to address how a diverse range of young leaders can be empowered to add value to Wellington’s future. Advocates for better sex education at schools delivered a petition to MP Grant Robertson at parliament on Tuesday. Over 5,000 people have signed the petition of Wellington High School students Lauren Jack and Ruby Medlicott, who aim to make sex education a priority and consent and healthy relationships with LGBTQ inclusion taught in every high school. It came after two Wellington students posted comments encouraging people to rape drunk, unconscious girls. Lauren said many teenagers have experienced sexual harassment, sometimes within school environments.

Kilbirnie reveals new brand and website

Young netball players at St Francis de Sales School are celebrating a dream come true, thanks to a win off-court. The school has been awarded a court makeover including freshly painted court markings, new goal posts along with new gear bags and match balls. It is the result of The ANZ Netball Dream Big promotion, which donates netball equipment to a number of clubs and schools nationwide with netball equipment. St Francis was the only successful Wellington school for 2017. The courts where the primary school players compete and train double up as a church carpark at the weekends. This has meant constant wear and tear to the line markings since they were last touched up 15 years ago. They also didn’t have regulation goal posts because of having to use hoops that would be easily stored away. Parent and junior netball coach Kate Roberts, who was responsible for winning the ANZ Netball Dream Big application, said the players were previously unable to train effectively because they couldn’t

The SPCA is encouraging Kiwis across the country to get their paws messy in the kitchen for this year’s SPCA Cupcake Day. The annual fundraiser provides a tasty way for New Zealanders to “bake” a difference in the fight against animal cruelty. Cupcake Day is the SPCA’s annual fundraiser with all proceeds going towards protecting the 46,000 abused, neglected, injured and abandoned animals that come through its doors each year. Since 2009, supporters of the charity have raised more than $2million through the baking and selling of cupcakes and other treats. This year it will be held on Monday, August 14 and the SPCA is

inviting people to register and bake for friends, family, colleagues and classmates, no matter what their baking ability. All the funds raised go directly towards helping animals in bakers’ local areas. Last year over $35,000 was raised in Wellington alone. “Cupcake Day is a fun and delicious way to help raise funds for the shelter, food and vet treatment these animals need, while they wait for their forever homes,” SPCA’s acting CEO Andrea Midgen said. “We want Kiwis to go barking mad for baking.” Wellington City Council will once again support the cause by holding their annual ‘Cupcake Idol’ competition.

Kids gets energised to keep obesity at bay

Most public commuters satisfied: Survey An annual customer satisfaction survey of public transport in the Wellington region shows satisfaction on par with last year’s survey at 92 percent. Barbara Donaldson, Chair of the Regional Transport Committee, said over 3800 customers were surveyed and the results showcase Wellington’s Metlink public transport network is continuing to achieve a very high standard of service. In another survey in May, 450 customers were asked what they thought of Metlink’s website with most features rating four out of five for ease of use.

Thousands of Wellington primary school kids are getting their blood pumping, and learning about healthy eating, to avoid obesity. Around 3000 children from 16 schools in Wellington and Porirua are participating in Project Energize Wellington, which combines sport and physical activity with nutrition lessons. The programme, which began in 2005 as an experiment in Waikato primary schools, is funded by Capital & Coast District Health Board (CCDHB) and delivered by the Heart Foundation. Brianna Tekii, the Project Energize team leader for the CCDHB catchment covering Wellington, Porirua and Kapiti, said there were three “energisers” in the catchment, with two having started recently.

Each energiser would work with approximately 10 schools. Five schools in Wellington’s southern and eastern suburbs – Holy Cross, Lyall Bay, Kahurangi, Newtown and St Anne’s – are involved in the project, having been selected on a needs analysis. “Obesity has increased significantly over recent years, and is particularly worrying in children,” CCDHB’s executive director strategy, innovation and performance Rachel Haggerty said. “Obesity is linked to a range of health problems and affects a child’s quality of life, and obese children are more likely to become obese as adults – increasing risk of further problems and reduced life expectancy.” In 2015/16 over 10 percent of New

Zealand children aged 2-14 were obese, 21 percent were overweight, and 15 percent of Maori – and 30 percent of Pacific – children were obese. “Getting children active, and helping them make healthy eating choices, will reduce childhood obesity. “We’re excited to support programmes that make a real difference in the lives of our communities.” A 2011 evaluation of Project Energise found the average weight of participating children dropped three percent, while 76 percent of their parents believed their children’s fitness improved because of the programme. CCDHB aims to have 30 Wellington schools enrolled by 2019.

He also thanked the professional musicians and Russian community members who participated, as well as local Kohanga Reo teacher Tessa Waikari and the Newtown Residents Association for their support. He hoped the festival would become an annual event.

No excuse for fraud Dear Editor, Co-leader of the Green Party Metiria Turei’s admission to having committed fraud over a five-year period has left the public of New Zealand wondering - is there a law for politicians and a different law for the rest of us? Her admission to this crime, had she not been a list MP, would have seen her up in court facing charges

of fraud. Accountability must play a part in this situation. She is a list MP and as such her reputation should be beyond reproach but this is, by her own admission sadly not the case. Despite making the offer to pay back everything she has stolen from the taxpayer this does not excuse her crime. Currently she is paid by the taxpayer so how is she going to pay back all the money she fraudulently stole from the same taxpayer who currently pays her wages? The question we must ask ourselves is do we, the voting public of New Zealand, want openly dishonest people running

this country? I believe the answer to this question is obvious – no we do not. The honourable thing for Metiria Turei to do is to step down from the position of co-leader of the Green Party and leave parliament. They say there is honour among thieves let us see how honourable Metiria Turei really is. Over the past 100 years there has been too many hold-ups every day and never been stopped. Cycleway response saddens Dear Editor, I am willing to share that the dispute over the cycleway has left me disillusioned with the community. Supporting status quo Dear Editor, Thank you for highlighting the cycleways of Wellington so prominently in your newspaper. It is an issue dear to all of us. I’d like to thank the Wellington City Council for putting a cycleway in Island Bay. I cycle to Island Bay on a regular basis to use the shops, see friends and visit the coast. The cycleway is a pleasure to use because it is quieter, safer and a smoother ride than the road. I feel safe out of the way of the moving cars because I am not scared of a

driver opening their car door into me. When I drive my car, I’m pleased the bikes are not likely to be in danger due to me overtaking them, and it’s easy enough to slow down at junctions and in the shopping area. If you don’t already cycle, imagine using the cycleway and how safe and unstressful it feels. Please keep something similar in Island Bay and extend the cycleway through Berhampore and Newtown now. Challenging times for students returning to school By Jamie Adams

A new study shows that two thirds of girls could find the return to school daunting. A study by GirlGuiding New Zealand of 4365 girls between the ages of seven and 17 found school pressures dominated the daily concerns of young women in New Zealand. Doing well in school was one of the top three concerns of those surveyed. More than a third said there was “a lot” of pressure on them to do well in school. Girls College student has lofty aims for the six subjects she studies. “I’m always striving to achieve Excellence. To get to

that requires 90 percent, 95 percent sometimes.” But it’s the extra-curricular Girl Guide activities that have the real impact. “I’m a participant in Rangers, I’m a Brownie leader and I’m part of the Ranger Advocacy Panel.” Involvement in Brownies and Rangers could take four hours out of her week, in addition to homework time, while being on the Ranger advocacy panel meant regularly communicating via Skype. “I want to find out what our girl members [of Rangers] are thinking.” Despite the clash with her school studies, Alexandra strives to achieve Rangers certificates by attending courses. “I do what I can on weekends and holidays.”

Alexandra’s devotion to empowering girls has seen her meet the Governor General on Waitangi Day and attend an International Women’s Day breakfast. GirlGuiding New Zealand is working with New Zealand girls to provide an outlet away from these stresses, with a programme that includes outdoor activities and adventures, camping, community action projects, life skills, and leadership opportunities.  The What Matters study by GirlGuiding New Zealand also looked at role models, body image, mental health, and acceptance. SportsFest celebrates fun, friendship and fair play with local youth Thousands of Year 5-8 students from across the Wellington region will experience fun, friendship, and fair play at SportsFest this year – encouraged by a group of Kiwi sporting heroes. SportsFest is an action-packed two-day multi-sports festival exclusive to Wellington, where the focus is on participation, and games are modified to suit younger players – like Rippa Rugby and Minipolo. Kiwi sports stars involved include Irene van Dyk (Netball), Peter Taylor (Rowing) and Sarah Cowley-Ross (Heptathlon), who will be on hand at the event’s various venues offering advice, encouragement, and stories from their years of ex-

perience as high performance athletes. Wellington City Council Education Partnership Leader Elspeth McMillan said she was pleased with the strong support already shown for the event from schools around the region. “For the third year running we’ve had a good uptake with 50 schools and more than 3000 students participating. This is in addition to team managers, sports coordinators, and of course we couldn’t do it without parents volunteering their time too. “SportsFest also couldn’t happen without the partnership between Wellington City Council, Primary Sport Wellington, ASB Bank, and 11

Regional Sports Organisations – all coming together to make this unique event a success for the capital,” she added. ASB regional manager Amanda Young said ASB is proud to be involved in this year’s much-loved Wellington SportsFest.

Bowel habits vary widely between individuals. For some people, being ‘regular’ means having a bowel motion every day; for others, passing a motion every two days, or even less frequently, is ‘regular’ and normal for them. “It is when changes occur to your bowel motions and their usual pattern – particularly if you ‘go’ less than 3 times per week, and you have to strain regularly to pass them, that you can consider you have constipation”, say Self Care pharmacists. Whatever the frequency, having regular bowel motions is part of being healthy and helps to avoid problems such as haemorrhoids (piles). Most cases of constipation in adults are mild and occur infrequently. Usually it can be linked to lifestyle factors such as not eating enough fibre in your diet or drinking enough fluids, and lack of physical activity. Not responding straight away to the urge to pass a bowel motion can lead to constipation. Some medicines, and some medical conditions, can also be the cause. Your Self Care pharmacist may discuss your medication history with you as a number of commonly used medicines may be associated with constipation and they may provide you with more information on these. People with emotional stress and

worry can become constipated, and hormone changes during pregnancy can lead to women having problems passing bowel motions. When you are constipated your stools can become lumpy or hard, or form a large bulky mass. In both cases, bowel motions are difficult to pass without straining. Regular straining to pass the stools can lead to haemorrhoids. After passing a motion, you may feel that there is more still to pass, or you may have a feeling of blockage in the bowel. “Before treating constipation with medicines, consider first making some simple lifestyle changes”, recommend Self Care pharmacists. “Drink plenty of fluids (water is best), since fluids soften the stools and make them easier to pass. Six to eight glasses of water throughout the day is a good amount; more if you eat a lot of fibre. If you are ‘bunged-up’ because you don’t have enough fibre in your diet (adults should have about 18-30g fibre a day) then slowly, over a few weeks to prevent wind in the gut, increase the amount you eat to keep your bowel motions soft and easy to pass. Fresh fruit and vegetables, and whole grain cereals and breads, are good sources of fibre. also useful for preventing constipation”. Being active and mobile is a way to prevent constipation, and taking regular exercise, such as walking everyday, will get your bowels ‘moving’. “However, if these lifestyle measures do not work, or you have severe constipation, laxative medicines can help. There are many different types, each working in different ways. Some work quickly and others take a few days”, indicate Self Care pharmacists. “For example, softeners work within a few hours on hard stools; stimulanttype laxatives work directly on the bowel to increase its activities in passing faeces. Other products act like fibre to bulk-up the stools for easy passing. These bulking-forming agents are good for long-term control of constipation and are not used for rapid relief”. Self Care pharmacists caution that “if these measures don’t help your constipation or it gets worse, or if you notice blood in the stools, have unexplained weight loss, fever, nausea or vomiting, you need to see your doctor”. And they advise that long-term use of laxatives is best to be under the doctor’s supervision. Bowls club ready to roll for centenary By Jamie Adams

The coming season will hold extra significance for the Island Bay Bowling Club as it gears up for its centenary celebration. Historian Chris Rabey has much knowledge of Island Bay, but is only a recent member of the club. “I’ve been playing bowls for 32 years but not at this club. I made friends with quite a few members. They’ve always been supportive of me and I decided to join as a full member this year,” he said. The clubrooms opened in January 1918 further south of where they are today, and quickly drew a lot of people, he said. “There were four other bowling greens in Island Bay before this one was established. The Tehi Hiwi club folded soon after this club was established and quite a few members came over.” The original building became inadequate for its growing membership so a larger one was established at its present location. “In 1978 new clubrooms were opened by [then Prime Minister] Mr Muldoon.” Another highlight for the club was membership surpassing 200 at it’s 75th jubilee in 1992/93. President Carl Mu-

ollo is pleased the club now has a high proportion of women among its 140-odd members. Centenary chairman Owen O’Sullivan said the club has produced a number of great players such as Domenica Massa, and has had several NZ reps – such as Commonwealth Games medallists Peter Bellis and Dave Baldwin – play there in tournaments. The club continues to perform strongly with the women’s pairs and men’s triples among Wellington’s champions last season. Greenkeeper of the Year was also awarded to Steve Edmunds. The major event for the club’s centenary is a two-day mixed gala on January 2021, to be sponsored by Lion Breweries. Secretary Carole Pickburn said “We try to support local organisations by allowing it to be used as a community venue.” The club has hosted school and kindergarten events, as well as family celebrations and even funerals. It also holds a regualr Housie competition. “It’s a real meeting place from cradle to the grave in our community,” Carole said. “We are always looking for more members – everybody is welcome.”

Seeing red over a lack of whites Four test matches for this New Zealand summer of cricket simply is not enough. A pair of two-test series bookending a ja m-packed sum mer schedule which sees Pakistan, the West Indies and a post-Ashes bound England hit our shores but there is only 20 days of the purist form of the game this 2017/2018 season. Yes, there’s a plethora of cricket to view, plenty of limited overs action but I long for at least three test series. I long for red ball and white clothes drama, games within games, the swing in momentum from test session to test session. I understand I’m in the minority, I’m a hardcore cricket fan that would happily take five consecutive days out of his life to watch every ball of a test match, but two test series are never long enough. Test cricket doesn’t pay, I get that too. Many of my fairweather sports fan mates will happily watch a twenty20

game because of its thrill a minute, all done in three hour format. But, selfishly, while I watch T20 cricket, I don’t think I’ve ever cared about the result of a match. To me, it’s slap and giggle, roll a dice, hope one batsman plays a blinder and that team wins. I’m onboard with 50-over cricket, everyone should be after the 2015 World Cup in that format but even those series were followed by three test series. It means I’ll have eight chances maximum to watch Kane Williamson at the crease facing a red ball, the same with Ross Taylor. Ultimately I think the players side with the purists, they want more test cricket, after all that is what their career records are judged on most. Williamson with bat in hand is as much my summer guilty pleasure as a rum and coke on a warm day. I feel like I’m being short-changed this summer and I’m sure I’m not alone.
