Wainuiomata’s Wellington Regional Karate Academy expanded to Lower Hutt, Andrew Surridge took over the Wainuiomata Cake Kitchen and mall managers Oyster Property Group promised there was still life in the Wainuiomata Shopping Centre. The Coast Road Church celebrated 150 years and Colleen Hira’s book Our Buried Histor y was published in celebration of that.

A local man, Rawiri Evans, was appointed to the International Indigenous Working Group On HIV and AIDS, one of the few in New Zealand to have the honour. Meanwhile local lad Keegan O’KaneJones was selected to trial for the Olympic Games in China. The principals of schools across Wainuiomata began their efforts to start a Community of Learning which would see them seek public input on what parents really wanted for their children in terms of education.

April was the start of the end for The Warehouse Wainuiomata as the group announced they might not renew their lease when the time came in 2017. Eastern Hutt Rotary started the Healthy Homes campaign in Wainuiomata alongside the Hutt City Council which saw some households get free insulation in their homes. Dr Peter Raudnic and wife Margaret Raudnic retired from their long time clinic, now Hutt City Health Centre, and a bottle store was proposed to open in The Strand. MAY:

May was a big month for Wainuiomata as the commu n it y ba nded toget her against a proposed bottle store was set to hit The Strand. A “No Deal” campaign was started and quickly gained t raction. T he owners of the bottle store pulled out. The discussion of a second

route in Wainuiomata was brought to the forefront by Rebecca Brauch who started a campaign online and the Wainuiomata Resilience Network who made a submission at the Hutt City Council annual plan. It was announced Wainuiomata would host the New Zealand Maori Rugby League National tournament over Labour Weekend. JUNE:

June saw the community coming together in other ways. Wainuiomata got its first permanent flag on Queen Street which would be looked after by the Maori Wardens. Wainuiomata High School came third in the Wellington heats of Stage Challenge for the first time. Over at the Wainuiomata Community Board members of the community debated the use of 1080 in the Wainuiomata hills over the summer. The drop would later be postponed until early 2017.

July became another big month for the community as The Warehouse announced it would be pulling out of Wainuiomata following the end of their lease in early 2017. Long time Hutt South MP Trevor Mallard announced he would not be seeking reelection for the seat in the 2017 General Elections, instead opting to try his hand at becoming Speaker of the House. Meanwhile, traffic stopped in Wainuiomata when Prime Minister John Key was in town to open the first ever National Party Office in Wainuiomata and the Wainuiomata Women’s Rugby team won their division and took home the Victoria Tavern Trophy. AUGUST:

Campaigning for the local body elections began to take place in August- it was announced there would be five people running for the top job of Mayor in Lower Hutt, the most in several years.

Waiu Street based butchers Cameron Harrison took away four awards at the New Zealand Pork and Ham awards, giving the butchery 14 wins in total over a five year period. Westpac announced they may close their Wainuiomata branch- this would be confir med in September. Wainuiomata Intermediate’s new hall opened with a special ceremony and New Zealand First leader Winston Peters paid a visit to Grey Power. SEPTEMBER:

The first month of spring saw members of the community rewarded for their work in different fields. Joanne RuawaiHawira and Lorraine “Missy” Awatere were given Hutt City Civic Honours Awards for their hard work volunteering in the community. Ziggy’s Dairy on Queen Street was a runner up in the Greater Wellington Regional Council and the Breeze Radio Station’s search for Wel-

lington’s Best Dairy. Awhina Lambert and Reriti Moeahu got a taste of stardom when they performed at the Maori Music Awards. OCTOBER:

The community pulled together at the beginning of the month to dress up Queen Street as part of the 7 Day Makeover. Schools across the valley were visited by the Better Funding Roadshow which would make a case against a new bill proposed by the Government. The Local Body Elections took place and local Ray Wallace was voted in for a third term as Mayor of Lower Hutt. Campbell Barry and Josh Briggs were elected to Hutt City Council as Councillors for the Wainuiomata Ward. Little Theatre celebrates highlights of 2016

Pop Up Book Workshop A Pop Up Book Workshop will be taking place next Tuesday at the Wainuiomata Community Library. The free event will teach children how to design and make a pop-up book or card. The workshop will take place on Tuesday, January 17 at 2pm. Suitable for ages seven and over.

Wainuiomata Little Theatre celebrated successful year in 2016 and now look forward to their next two shows in 2017. President of Wainuiomata Little Theatre, Trevor Williams, said 2016 was “another busy year” for the group. “We rehearsed and performed two major shows during the year. Preparation and rehearsal for a show takes about four months before the actual performance. So it’s a credit to our members that we were able to achieve this,” he said. “The first show of the year was “Annie”. This is a special show which appealed to people of all ages. It has a well-known story and songs, lots of children and even a dog. It was a great success. “The second show of the year was a little different to “Annie”. “Little Shop of Horrors” revolves around a flower shop and a large, human eating plant. This was hugely enjoyable was another success, notwithstanding the earthquakes and floods during the performances. Both shows kept our members busy and audiences entertained,” he said. Trevor said the little theatre now looked forward to their shows in 2017, with their first show “Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” already cast. “We would like to thank the community for their fantastic support during 2016. We look forward to entertaining you once again in 2017,” he said.

Stories in the Sun Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout January the Wainuiomata Community Library will be hosting stories in the sun. The story time sessions will take place at 2pm each day and are suited for ages up to five-years-old however, others are welcome too. Meet on the grass outside the car park entrance to the library.

Geocaching Geocaching is an outdoor activity played worldwide like a treasure hunt using clues and GPS coordinates to find different things. Locals interested in learning more about Geocaching this summer can head to a workshop at the War Memorial Library in Lower Hutt tomorrow. The free, all ages workshop will be taking place on Thursday, January 12 from 5pm until 6pm.

A local band has reformed to celebrate the release of their debut EP 30 years after the first vinyl edition was issued. Wainuiomata post-punk band Vietnam will be reuniting for a show in the New Zealand Fringe Festival in Wellington next month. Vietnam was for med in 1982 by Wainuiomata College friends Shane Bradbrook, Peter Dransfield, Leon Reedijk and Adrian Workman. The band had a brief career touring in New Zealand before relocating to Australia and disbanding. Their EP, released

in 1985, will be reissued by Spain based record company B.F.E. Records. Vietnam’s bass player Adrian said the idea to appear at the New Zealand Fringe Festival, over 30 years after the original release, was “mooted” within the band. “We’re not too serious about creating any kind of magical aura for the show; it’s really more of a celebration. We never officially launched the EP, as I moved to Australia about a month after its release, so there’s definitely some unfinished business involved.

“We’d like to attract some of the punters from that time, and also some younger generations who have an interest in the post punk genre,” he said. They will be joined in the concert by other incarnations of bands from their era including Unrestful Movements. Adrian said the band originally formed at a time when Wellington had a vibrant and independent post punk music scene. “It largely grew out of the frustration of being rebuffed by the mainstream venues who wanted cover bands. Eventu-

ally the mainstream venues softened to the collective voice of local musicians and began opening their doors, but the alternative gigs continued. New venues came and went, and Wellington enjoyed a period of mayhem and music like it had never seen before. And it has probably never seen anything similar since.”  Vietnam will be playing on Saturday, February 18 at Meow, 9 Edward St, Wellington. The show, titled ‘Indie Redux – WLG 1985’ starts at 6pm. New information panels have been unveiled at the Rimutaka Forest Park. To conclude this year’s shared celebration of National Parks, the Department of Conservation, the United States Embassy, and Rimutaka Forest Park Charitable Trust unveiled a series of native bird information panels for the Catchpool Valley of the Rimutaka Forest Park. The ceremony on December 20 included a blessing from representatives of the local Iwi, a dedication, short welcoming remarks from the president of the trust, Geoff Cameron, and a DOC representative. The construction of the panels was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Embassy which then worked with the Trust on the design of the information panels about native bird species. “We are very grateful for the grant from the U.S. Embassy towards this natural historyenvironmental management project. “It helps to celebrate 100 years of the U.S. National Parks Service in 2016 and helps New Zealanders learn about the native birds they are encountering in the Catchpool Valley,” Geoff said. Local Government Act not working for people? Dear Ed, The Local Government Act and the United Convention have a section which states purpose written into them. The purpose of the convention is for rights of all people with impairments and disability issues. The purpose of the local government act is to be effective and efficient and to

look after businesses and households. At Hutt City Council they have had consultation for the Accessibility and Inclusion committee. The disability sector and legal status of the disability has not been interpreted. Lots of disability organisations legal statuses are non-profit organisations. One of the terms that have come up like stake

Go out of this world with Capital E's Great Scavenger Hunt Wellington's favourite family day out is going interstellar this Wellington Anniversary weekend. Capital E's Great Scavenger Hunt is back for its seventh edition, with more destinations than ever. Intrepid explorers will visit the final frontier as they hunt for clues and complete missions. Wellington's waterfront will be taken over by young astronauts, armed with Capital E's special maps, to explore the different 'planets' – exciting organisations that celebrate the region's spirit such as Space Place at Carter Observatory, SPCA and Te Papa. The hunt, which has been a popular feature of Wellington Anniversary weekend since 2010, runs from 10am-4pm on Saturday 21 January. Entry to the Great Scavenger Hunt is by koha, and it takes off with a map, which can be collected from Capital E Central at 4 Queens Wharf or printed off online beforehand from www.capitale.org.nz. Scavengers then visit the destinations, complete the stellar challenges and collect stamps. Each challenge has two difficulty levels, with a 60-minute or

120-minute course to choose from. Budding astronauts are encouraged to dress in their best intergalactic-inspired costumes - there'll be spot prizes on the day for the best dressed and a costume parade at Queens Wharf at 12:45pm. Scavengers who complete all the challenges will go in the draw to win the ultimate prize pack. There will also be a lunchtime extravaganza under the sails at Queens Wharf from 12pm-1:45pm, complete with entertainment, local food trucks and prizes for the best dressed. In case of rain, the Great Scavenger Hunt will be postponed until Sunday 22 January – keep an eye out on Capital E's Facebook and Twitter and subscribe to their e-newsletter for notification.

Sporting highlights of the year By Emma McAuliffe

It was a big year for sports in Wainuiomata with many players and teams winning on different levels. Athletes excelled in every sport from boxing to baseball to underwater hockey. Junior teams took out competitions for the first time, senior teams got promotions and some even won big. We look at five of Wainuiomata’s sporting highlights for 2016. Wainuiomata Women’s wins the Victoria Tavern Trophy The Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club showed just how strong their Women’s side was this year, taking out the Victoria Tavern division. The final game saw the team battle it out at William Jones Park against Oriental-Rongotai, winning 24-12. Squash Club turns 40 The Wainuiomata (Rugby) Squash Club celebrated their 40th anniversary. The club celebrated 40 years over the first weekend in September and had people in attendance from all over. Senior Hockey Team gets an upgrade The Wainuiomata Women’s Senior

Hockey team had an excellent year in on the field. The team, only in their second season, was upgraded to Premier 2 and made the finals of their new division. The team would eventually lose out to Victoria University however, it was impressive the team made it as far as they did. High School Sporting Success The Wainuiomata High School Senior rugby league team took home the Stephen Kearney Cup for the first time. The team had been a runner up for the cup three times. They won the final against Wellington College, 24-10. The high school’s premier netball team also won their division 3 final for the first time. They played their final in August against Upper Hutt College and won 29-23. Boxing successes Local boxing superstar Raymond Seumanu won his fourth consecutive national title at the National Boxing Champs held in July. At 14-years-old he would be one of the youngest boxers to have that accomplishment. Local boxer Keegan O’Kane- Jones was selected to take part in qualifiers in China for the Rio Olympics. He came close but did not make the final cut in selection.

The curious case of Ronda Rousey “Forget about Ronda”. Those were the words of UFC bantamweight women’s champion, Amanda Nunes after she stopped the former pin-up girl of MMA with a 48-second TKO in Las Vegas. I was fortunate to be in Vegas for the event thanks to some complimentary tickets. The reaction for Rousey was enormous from the 20,000-strong crowd inside the T-Mobile Center. That’s as good as it got for the hometown girl. I was once fully on the Rousey bandwagon, who doesn’t find a good looking woman who kicks butt attractive? However, I lost respect for her after her first loss because of how she carried herself post-fight. The 29-year-old was making her comeback after losing her title and her vaunted undefeated streak more than a year earlier in a one-sided contest against Holly Holm. If that defeat was embarrassing,

this one proved Rousey had become human proof of the phrase “hero to zero” in 12 months. Rousey had 12 months to prepare for her redemption and failed spectacularly. No head movement, no guard, no answers. Despite getting her head punched in, she will pocket $3 million minimum for the effort. Rousey put women’s MMA on the map. She is beautiful, articulate and initially she won. That’s the ultimate triple threat for any organisation. However, UFC 207 proved women have caught up and surpassed Rousey who is a judo exponent by trade. Nunes suggested she should retire. Rumours of Rousey going to professional wrestling will only intensify now. It’s hard to see where her MMA career goes from here. The aura has gone and so has her drawing power.
