Have your say on local Mountain Bike Park Locals are being encouraged to have their say on the proposed development of the Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park.

Wellington City Council’s manager of parks, sport and recreation, Paul Andrews, said Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park was award-winning and world-class, and the purpose of this plan was to reinforce that reputation for the future.

“We want to create opportunities for riders to spend more

time at the park and have a greater choice of trails to ride.

“That’s for all ages and skill levels – whether they want to get into the wilderness, ride with their mates, or just go as fast as they can.”

The plan proposes developing 25 new track sections over the next ten years and upgrading 3.5 kilometres of existing tracks.

It also aims to make the main entrance on South Karori Road more of a hub for visitors to

Makara Peak and develop more picnic and rest areas as well as shelter throughout the park.

Since it was established in 1998, the Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park has grown to become the region’s most significant mountain bike destination. The park was established for mountain biking, but it is also used by local runners and walkers.

Supporters, who have built and resourced most of the track network and manage an extensive habitat restoration project.

Book about local’s war stories set to launch Continued from page 1.

Editor of the book Elaine Bolitho said the project started out with the purpose of each writer recording their stories for their grandchildren.

“Now it has become a book for our community,” she said.

Each writer tells the tale of how they, and their loved ones, were affected by war both at home and abroad. The book includes stories that are set all over New Zealand.

Onslow-Wester n wa rd councillor Andy Foster, who wrote the Foreword to War Stories From Khandallah With Love said it was “a marvellous treasure trove of personal memories.”

Elaine shares two stories in the book. The first discusses her father and the war stories he shared with her when she was a young girl.

Elaine’s second piece of writing tells the story of her grandmother and how she had her first child 10 days after her husband left for war.

The stories are also complemented by the history of the soldiers named on Khandal-

lah and Ngaio war memorials.

Elaine said the book would spark readers’ memories of how either WWI or WWII had an effect on their own families, and the stories that may have been passed down to them through generations.

“There is so much interest in war stories at the moment because of the centenary,” she said.

The book also includes some history of the local area as well as part of an original letter written by a local soldier during the war.

“At the start it was just going to be 90 pages but then it developed to include other stories about our community history,” Elaine explained.

Old Girls inducted into Hall of Fame

Three impressive Marsden School Old Girls were named as 2016 Hall of Fame Laureates recently.

On the 10th anniversary of the awards the honour went to professional sportswoman Kate McIlroy, businesswoman Victoria Spackman and singing teacher and performer Judy Bellingham.

It was also awarded posthumously to Sheilah Winn, a supporter and patron of the arts.

Sport has always been a part of Kate’s life and her vast contribution to sport extends across swimming, running, team sports and coaching.

In 2006 Kate came sixth in the Women’s Steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and in 2009 moved to Triathlon. She has run successfully in the World Triathlon series and came tenth in the 2012 London Olympic Triathlon.

At Victoria University, mountain running became more than a hobby and in 2005 she became the world mountain running champion and New Zealand Sportswoman of the year.

“It just happened to be at a time when I was in the best shape of my life.”

Kate was overwhelmed when she found out she was going to be recognised at the recent ceremony.

“You achieve these things but you never think they’re going to be acknowledged, it’s a huge honour.”

Victoria received the honour in recognition of her work as a businesswoman in the world of film, television and theatre.

Victoria is the co-owner and Chief Ex-

ecutive Officer of the screen and visitor experience company, the Gibson Group.

She is a Director of Screenrights Australia, is on the Board of Education New Zealand, and until recently was on the Screen and Production and Development Association, and BATS Theatre, boards.

In 2015 Victoria received the Arts and Culture award in Westpac’s Women of Influence Awards and in 2012 won the CLANZ-Lexis Nexis Private Sector In house lawyer of the year award.

Victoria said it was “a real surprise” to find out she was going to be inducted into the Marsden Hall of Fame.

“I don’t do what I do for recognition.

But it is nice to be recognised... this is a big honour.”

The third old girl to receive the award this year was Judy who was recognised for her contribution to singing both as a teacher and performer for more than 50 years.

Judy is the William Evans Associate Professor of Voice at Otago University.

Nationally she has worked with Youth Choirs, the Big Sing and the New Zealand Singing School.

Her performances have taken her to stages throughout the world and she has commissioned works, run workshops at international conferences and has several publications to her name.

Judy said she had a tough time as a young teenager at Marsden School. “It was singing that saved me.”

She was amazed she would be inducted into the Hall of Fame after only being at Marsden School for two years.

“It’s really nice to be recognised.”

The annual Ora King Awards took place last month and a local Chef came away with the title Best Ora King Ambassador New Zealand.

Johnsonville man Chetan Pangam who is the executive chef and manager at the One80° restaurant, Copthorne Hotel, received his fi rst win this year after being nominated three times.

In 2014 Chetan was nominated for Best Dish New Zealand and the following year he was nominated for Best Ambassador – the award he took out this time around.

Chetan started his extensive career in five-star hotels of Bangalore and New Delhi before moving to New Zealand in 2002.

What makes these awards unique is that Ora King Salmon is only available at selected restaurants around the world.

For the annual awards, each chef was asked to come up with a dish involving the Ora King Salmon.

Chetan’s entr y this yea r was Goan Coastal Ora King Salmon with rechado masala, cloudy bay clams, sago, fermented black garlic, salmon crackling, caviar and tomato shorba gel.

“This dish was inspired by my Mum as she is from Goa in India and the flavours in this dish bring back memories of my childhood,” he said.

Chetan said the ambassador chefs were chosen by The New Zealand King Salmon [Ora King salmon] company.

Getting prepared for a disaster Local Lions joined in on a long walk home over the weekend, covering 48 kilometres of terrain.

On Saturday and Sunday, 81 walkers registered to trek from Wellington to Waikanae as preparation for having to do the same walk after a natural disaster.

Event manager, Lion Andrew Laing said it was great event and marshals along the way were very helpful and supportive.

Eleven Lions clubs from Wellington to Raumati were involved in providing marshals and drink stops.

The weather proved harsh on day two when walkers departed Ngatitoa Domain at Mana in show-

ers over wet tracks, and a with a strong, cold wind.

The 81 walkers had dropped down to a determined 37 who ventured along the coast road.

Jacqui Whelan of Whitby and Jacqui Austin of Churton Park cleared out from the main bunches and finished in three hours and 32 minutes, and three hours 39 minutes respectively.

“While the Long Walk Home went well and was enjoyed by most, the message within this project is very serious indeed,” Andrew said.

Commuters to Wellington need to be fully aware of what could happen following a disaster and

start thinking about how they would get home.

“To reinforce that message further, Lions were happy to have help and other guidance from the Wellington Regional Emergency Management Organisation and Bruce Pepperell, WREMO’s regional manager did the weekend’s walk, as he did in 2014.

“Police in Wellington were also most helpful in assisting with walkers crossing at the bottom of the Ngauranga Gorge,” Andrew said.

The project leader said many months went into planning the walk, which will be looked at to see what can be improved on for next year.

Two local men have collaborated to produce a children’s book about a girl who goes on an adventure up a mountain and attempts to save the world with chocolate.

Hillary and the Chocolate Mountain, written by Laurence Fisher and illustrated by Adrian Castle, officially launched at the Lighthouse Cinema in Petone at the weekend.

Some lucky students from Ngaio School, where Laurence and Adrian’s daughters attend, got the chance to have a Q and A session with the writer and illustrator last Friday about the process of producing a book.

Laurence said having local children give the pair good feedback had been a “confidence boost and a comfort”.

The session started off with students Lola Byrne, 10, and AspenRose Carroll, 11, introducing Laurence and Adrian before the Year 3 to Year 6’s got the opportunity to ask questions.

Hillary and the Chocolate Mountain is the seventh book written by Laurence, and was inspired by the

author’s regular runs up Mount Kaukau.

“I love it up there; it makes me feel like I’m on holiday.”

Laurence said it was great to get feedback from his own daughter, Emily, throughout the writing process, especially since the book is aimed at ages eight to 12.

“It was absolutely brilliant and it gave me a good insight into the mind of an eight-year-old girl.”

Adrian read Hillary and the Chocolate Mountain to his daughter Greer so he could come up with ideas on how to illustrate the book.

“Greer absolutely loved it; she was really taken with it.”

Laurence and Adrian said it was an honour to be able to chat to their daughters classes about their book and have already discussed producing a sequel.

Burial sites at Karori Cemetery to get a clean-up A project focusing on Karori Cemetery’s burial sites for victims of the 1918 influenza pandemic is set to start this weekend.

The aim of the project is to clear and clean the main burial sites for greater public access.

Local genealogists will also research the lives and family circumstances of at least 75 people who died.

The results of the research will appear on a community website dedicated to the victims buried at Karori Cemetery.

The first volunteer working bee is scheduled for this Sunday and project co-ordinator, local resident, Barbara Mulligan said people should contact her if they want to get involved.

“Some of the local community groups are helping out but we’d love

to hear from anyone else who’d like to get their hands dirty while learning a bit about the city’s history.”

Between October and December 1918 a lethal influenza pandemic caused the death of around 8600 people throughout New Zealand.

This was about half as many New Zealanders as had been killed during the whole of the First World War. At least 720 of those who succumbed to influenza in Wellington were buried at Karori cemetery.

“All burials were in individual plots,” Barbara said.

“A few people were interred in previously purchased family plots, but many graves were dug in contiguous areas of the cemetery, the location of these conforming to religious affiliation.”

As well as looking for volunteers,

Barbara said they want to identify descendants of flu victims buried at the cemetery.

“We’d love to find living relatives who would be keen to help out with our research. In return, they might discover some fascinating family history, which we can sometimes help contextualise by providing additional information on occupations, war service and number of family members affected.”  The project’s completion will coincide with the centenary of the Armistice of WWI on November, 11 2018.  To volunteer contact Barbara Mulligan at flu1918karori@gmail. com or turn up on Sunday, November 13 at the Main Chapel, Karori Cemetery, Rosehaugh Avenue at 2.00pm.

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a locked shed on a house construction site in McLintock Street North was broken into by cutting off the screws securing the lock. A quantity of power tools used by the builders were stolen from the shed.

An attempt was made to steal a grey Nissan Primera stationwagon which had been parked locked in the commuter carpark at Johnsonville railway station. A

passenger window was smashed and the ignition box had been pulled out and taken. A vehicle with unlawful registration plates entered a petrol station in Bassett Road. A card offered for payment was rejected and the driver left without paying.

In Newlands a blue Mitsubishi Lancer parked locked in Kentwood Drive was stolen. It was located shortly afterwards in a

tip. The car windows had been smashed, all wheels removed and the stereo ripped out. A white Toyota Spacio stationwagon parked locked in Bracken Road was stolen. A house in Baylands Drive was damaged by graffiti scratched into the paintwork on the side of the house. The letterbox of a house in Lyndfield Lane was pulled out of the ground. It is understood that other letterboxes in

the neighbourhood were similarly targeted.

In Khandallah property was stolen from a house in Rangoon Street, including a Television, an Xbox 360 console, a suitcase, cosmetics, shoes and clothing, and a gold ring. Eggs were thrown at a house in Cashmere Avenue and bottles taken from a recycling bin were smashed in the driveway.

In Ngaio three bicycles locked

together in a carport at a house in Bankot Terrace were stolen.

In Crofton Downs a house in Sarah Way was entered through a cut plastic wall and a small bedroom window was smashed.

It is not yet known what has been stolen.

A bicycle chained to a fence in a carpark in Old Hutt Road while the owner was at work was stolen, so was the chain securing it.

The keen knitters and crafty residents of Enliven’s Longview Home are busy preparing items to sell at their fundraising garage sale this Saturday.

Craft, bric-a-brac, clothing, booking and baking are among the items on offer at the Longview Home garage sale, which will take place at 14 Sunrise Boulevard in Tawa, this Saturday from 8am to 11.30am.

The home’s residents are raising funds to purchase items on their wish list, explains Longview Home clinical nurse manager Michael Nestmann.

“The residents came up with a wish list of extras they’d like for their home, including a flag pole, more bird feeders, more pet fish, a laptop and much more,” says Michael.

“We are inviting the community to come along, pick up a few bargains and enjoy the atmosphere. At the same time they’ll be supporting us to be able to provide even more for the residents that live at Longview Home.”

Longview Home diversional therapist Marlene Bowles says the residents have been having a great time getting involved

with the fundraising.

“It also gives them a great feeling of satisfaction when someone buys something they’ve made themselves.”

Longview Home resident Aletta Strijdom says she has been busy knitting blankets for the event.

“Some blankets I have made from start to finish and others have been a combined effort - the other residents knit peggy squares and I sew them together and crochet the edges to finish them off,” says Aletta.

“I call myself the scrap yard artist – it keeps me busy!”

Some of Aletta’s blankets will be for sale at Longview Home’s garage sale, alongside bric-a-brac, clothing, books, a sausage sizzle, fresh baking and crafts.

Enliven’s Longview Home is part of the not-for-profit organisation Presbyterian Support Central and offers rest home and hospital care, as well as short term respite and health recovery.  For more information about the home call 0508 ENLIVEN or visit www.enlivencentral.org.nz.

St Benedict’s School students celebrated their annual book week in style again this year, dressing up as their favourite fictional characters.

From Harry Potter, Superman and Batman to the Cat in the Hat and Fancy Nancy,

teachers, students and staff members from the school in Khandallah went all out to celebrate books.

Throughout the school’s book week students enjoyed the dress up day, a book swap, a book quiz and even a reading from Wellington author and illustrator Fifi

Colston.

St Benedict’s School librarian Penny Cole said it was important for young children to celebrate reading.

“The general theme throughout the week is to have lots of fun.

“Book week allows children to focus on all of their

favourite stories.”

She said having book week each year was beneficial because it “makes reading fun”.

Each class paraded around the courts showing off their specially-made costumes and prizes were given out later on by the student council.

Helene Ritchie ponders next move

Former Wellington City Councillor Helene Ritchie.

Former northern ward councillor, Helene Ritchie, who was first elected to the Wellington City Council in 1977, says she is pondering what to do next.

Helene went all in on this year’s election, running for mayor and giving up her seat in the northern ward.

Throughout her long political career Helene served on the Wellington City Council, the Greater Wellington Regional Council and the Capital and Coast District Health Board.

“My sons, for almost their entire lives, have only known a controversial politician for a mother,” Helene said.

After the results of the recent local government elections Helene said she now needed to think about what comes next.

“It has been such a privilege to serve the people of Wellington and especially the Northern Ward, from which I have now resigned.”

Helene’s political career began in Ohariu Valley when she co-founded its first community board.

“I was first elected city-wide as a Johnsonville playcentre mother forty years ago.”

She said among her proudest moments on the Wellington City Council included becoming the city’s first female deputy mayor and campaigning for Wellington to be a nuclear free zone in 1982.

Helene always had several jobs at once including working as a psychologist and mediator as well as a senior policy analyst.

“On the Health Board I focused especially on suicide prevention; aged care home and community services; mental health, primary health and prevention.”

Helene said though life was “different now” she was excited about the next step.

She has left the country to “ponder from afar” what her next move will be.

Helene thanked the community for their support over the many years she has served as a local politician.

“It’s been hard work. It’s been fun. It’s been a privilege for the thirty years, to be able to a difference and to improve the lives of others.”

Mayor and councillors plan for years ahead where we can improve.

“These strategy days will help us align key projects and work streams, and agree on priorities so we can hit the ground running,” Mr Lester said.

Since taking office over three weeks ago, Mr Lester has announced the new Councillors’ portfolios, including the creation of City Ambassador

and City Scientist portfolios.

A new streamlined committee structure, with the four policy-based committees centralised into a single City Strategy committee, has been put in place.

Following the planning conference the Mayor will be hosting The Wellington Summit on Monday, November 14 where the council will listen to

interested parties’ thoughts on the areas of transport, housing, the economy, sport, events, arts and the environment.

“We have a growing population, which comes with increased demands on transport and housing, a flourishing economy and an active arts and culture scene, all of which need planning for,” Mr Lester said.

Huntleigh Home residents test out their new mobility scooter

Residents of Huntleigh Home in Karori got the chance to test out the home’s new mobility scooter with help from local police recently.

Five of the home’s residents received a safety lesson from local Community Constables Hamish Knight and Jason Mokrzecki last Thursday.

Huntleigh Home manager Suzanne Simpson said it was a great opportunity for the residents to get used to the new scooter.

“We need to make sure they are going to feel safe and comfortable using it.”

She said the scooter would give the residents more freedom.

“Some of the residents can’t walk very far so this will give them a lot more independence.”

The home was able to buy a new scooter thanks to a grant from the Lions Foundation, which Suzanne said was a great help.

Hamish said the impromptu course was a great way for the residents to become confident driving the scooter.

“We talked about how to safely get on and off the scooter, how much space they need when travelling behind people and safe speeds to travel at.

“It’s just like being in a car, you need to keep at a safe distance,” he explained.

The policemen also set up a cone track where the residents could test out their turning and backing skills.

The scooter will be available for communal use for all residents of Huntleigh Home and its joined apartments.

A classic tale with a new twist

A classic tale with a new twist will be brought to life at Circa Theatre this festive season with Roger Hall’s Jack and the Beanstalk, The Pantomime.

This popular children’s story has been turned into a performance, with song and dance, the whole family can enjoy.

Director Susan Wilson of Kelburn said this version of the fairytale would include a love interest for the protagonist Jack, and would be more focused around his mother as the “adored Dame”.

“This show is for the whole family, from age four to 104,” Susan said.

She said the great thing about putting on a pantomime was it gave the cast and crew the opportunity to include musical pieces, comedy and the opportunity to get the audience involved.

“I love the comedy aspect, but I also love that it’s a family show. With pantomimes we always get the kids up on stage to join in and the cast interacts with the audience as much as possible.”

Susan said they also included some current references to make the show unique to what is happening in New Zealand and around the world at the time the production is performed.

“There will be lots of social and political references to things that are happening locally,” Susan explained.

“It’s good to keep it fresh… We might need to rewrite a joke or two

In a Marsden tradition the Old Girls put on a special morning tea of strawberries and ice-cream for the Year 13 girls who left this week.

It was a special occasion with the school leavers being welcomed into the Old Girls’ Association; they were excited to continue being part of the Marsden family as Marsden young Old Girls.

Eleanor Schwer has been at Marsden since Year 2 and finished Year 13 on November 2.

She would join her mum Caroline, who started at Marsden when she was eight

years old and also graduated at Year 13, as an Old Girl.

Caroline’s advice to Eleanor and the other Year 13 girls was “Make the most of all the opportunities that come your way.

Be involved in your place of learning, your workplace, community and your family”.

Eleanor said she was going to miss her friends and was sad to be leaving school because she had loved being at Marsden.

She was excited about the next stage in her journey as she will be going to Otago University to study Health Science next year.

Susan, who has directed near 100 shows since Circa Theatre opened, said though putting a pantomime together was hard work, it was also a lot of fun.

They are very enthusiastic about what they do.”  Jack and the Beanstalk, The Pantomime will run from November 19 to December 20 and again from January 4 to 14.

Researchers from Victoria University have received 26 prestigious fun grants totalling over $14 million.

The 26 grants, from the Marsden Fund, was the largest number ever received by the University and more than 22 per cent of the total funding awarded in 2016.

The Marsden Fund supports research excellence, allowing New Zealand’s most talented researchers to explore ideas at the forefront of their disciplines.

The Fund is administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand on behalf of the Government and this year Victoria University researchers received a total of $14.3 million, securing 26 out of the 117 research projects funded nationwide.

Victoria projects awarded funding ranged from research into nanoparticles, glaciers and election turnouts to gender, Maori traditional calendars and the cosmic web.

Of the 26 successful Victoria researchers, 16 are in the Faculty of Science, and six of those are in the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences.

Four grants were awarded to researchers in the humanities, three to engineering staff, two for education research, and one to staff in the Faculty of Law. Vice-Provost (Research) Professor Kate McGrath said the results were excellent and confirmed the strength of research capability at Victoria.

“These successful projects reflect the world-leading and potentially gamechanging research being carried out at Victoria.

“As a global-civic capital city university, we want to lead thinking on major societal, economic and environmental issues. This success gives us assurance that our research is of the highest calibre.”

Local businesses raise nearly $2000 for Breast Cancer awareness Stores across Wellington have raised nearly $2000 for breast cancer awareness over the past two months.

Eleven Bridgestone stores in Wellington took part in the Pink Your Ride campaign which saw the stores sell specially made pink valve caps and donating all proceeds to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

The $1,936 raised would be used to support breast cancer awareness and education programmes and help fund vital research into new treatments for a disease that strikes eight Kiwi women every day.

John Staples, Bridgestone’s associate director New Zealand business, said the Pink Caps were a way for the company and the community to show their support for those who had fought, or were currently fighting, breast cancer.

“Breast cancer is a disease that touches the lives of many, so it’s heartening to know The New Zealand Breast Cancer

Foundation is there to help patients, in Wellington and across the country, during such a difficult time,” John said.

“The Pink Caps campaign is a simple idea that’s had a big impact since inception.

We hope the funds raised this year will make a real difference in the foundation’s efforts to develop new treatments for the disease and support those affected.”

New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation chief executive Evangelia Henderson said the foundation was “extremely grateful” to Bridgestone and everyone who purchased a pink valve cap.

“The campaign has received tremendous support over the past eight years, helping to create a future of hope in the fight against breast cancer,” she said.  The Pink Cap campaign has been running across New Zealand since 2008. To date it has raised $712,536 for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Johnsonville Youth Grants Awards were held again this year in the Johnsonville Shopping Centre to celebrate young locals contributing to the community.

From 65 applicants, 19 students from Newlands, Onslow and Tawa Colleges received grants for sport, education and the arts.

Since the youth grants were established in 1987 the trust has granted nearly $600,000 to 344 young people from the local community.

Trust chair Chris Kirk-Burnnand said it was great to be able to give grants to individual students, on October 20, to help them continue to achieve their goals.

“Most of the students are doing great things in the community and these grants are extra encouragement for them.”

Chris said he had received letters from some of the students saying how much it meant to them that they got outside support for the goals they wanted to achieve.

The grants, which were presented by MP for Ohariu Peter Dunne went to students

to help them achieve a variety of goals, from becoming professional sports people to completing a Health Science degree in the hopes of becoming a doctor.

“A primary consideration when judging applications is to understand what these people are putting back into our community and to understand how the project they seek funding for will help others in the years ahead,” Chris explained.

On the day the audience were treated to a performance by Onlsow College band Restrospect before the awards were given out.

Chris said the grants would not be possible without the support of local contributors.

Core funding has come from Autostop Group which has in the last 10 years alone, donated over $260,000.

Giving back through Christmas Crackers Locals are being urged to support KidsCan through their annual Christmas Cracker Appeal this festive season.

The iconic KidsCan appeal is in its tenth year and is a nationwide fundraiser for the children’s charity.

Funds raised will help provide on-going assistance to thousands of disadvantaged Kiwi children in the 598 low decile schools supported by KidsCan throughout New Zealand.

KidsCan believed all children should have basics such as food, adequate clothing and healthcare so they have an equal chance at a good education.

KidsCan CEO and co-founder Julie Chapman said she hoped New Zealanders would get involved in this important appeal and enjoy giving back with KidsCan. “We have more prizes than ever before with a pool of 2500 prizes, including a family spa pool from Vortex Spas and a

trip for four to Hawaii thanks to the Flight Centre Foundation.

“It’s fantastic to have Countdown on board again this year selling the crackers, along with Harvey Norman, Toyworld, Smith and Caughey’s, The Coffee Club, Citta Design and New Balance outlet stores.”

This year Countdown supermarkets will have 50,000 crackers available for purchase nationwide.

Thousands of New Zealanders are taking part in the iconic Red Nose Day appeal on Friday, November 18 to raise money for vital medical research to find cures and better treatment for health conditions and serious illnesses affecting children.

Cure Kids, the charity behind Red Nose Day, is New Zealand’s largest child health charity and last year alone funded $2.47 million of new child health research projects.

Cure Kids CEO Frances Benge said Cure Kids was reliant on the generosity of New Zealanders who donate.

“Over $1 million was raised during last year’s appeal and we want to encourage as many New Zealanders as possible to join in this year to help improve and extend the lives of thousands of Kiwi kids,” Frances said.

Cure Kids is currently funding research for serious health conditions including cot death, stillbirth, leukaemia,

rheumatic heart disease, burns, cystic fibrosis, asthma, inherited heart conditions, mental health conditions, among others.

This year Red Nose Day was set to be action-packed with schools, corporates, hospitals and individuals getting involved to help fundraise through activities and events including a bubble soccer fundraiser, bake sales and a school disco.

Around 600 schools and over 300 businesses have already signed up for Red Nose Day, with more than 130,000 red noses making their way to schools and business in preparation for the day.  Donations can be made online through the Red Nose Day website (www.rednoseday.co.nz), by texting NOSE to 933, or at participating retailers around New Zealand. Crofton Downs Primary School’s Matsuri gala on Saturday, November 5 had something for everyone’s diverse tastes.

As well as the usual gala mix of food stalls, books, clothes and toys, the event incorporated a car boot sale, Lego innovations and creations, live music and a large boutique craft market in its newly strengthened school hall.

The weather was perfect for the young at heart to fully enjoy the over 20 games and rides on offer.

A strong force of police personnel were on hand to offer police car rides and to show a rapt audience how a police dog performs when confronted by an armed offender.

The Wellington Japanese Supplementary School, which is on the primary school grounds, energetically showcased performances by students and supporters of its school.

Women set to tear Hurricanes squad named for year ahead up the dirt track Seven new players have joined the Hurricanes as the squad prepares for the 2017 season.

The 2017 Hurricanes squad was announced last Tuesday and includes four super rugby rookies and three players from other super rugby squads.

Canterbury utility back Jordie Barrett, Taranaki loose forward Toa Halafihi, Taranaki halfback Kylem O’Donnell, and Wellington outside back Peter Umaga-Jensen were selected for their first season of Super Rugby.

Lock Sam Lousi, loose forward Reed Prinsep, and wing Ben Lam have joined the team from the Waratahs, Crusaders and Blues respectively.

Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd said each of the newcomers would add an exciting new dimension to the squad.

“It’s exciting to have some fresh faces in the team environment and I feel as though we’ve ended up with a very well balanced squad and some really interesting new options,” he said.

“We are very proud of what we achieved last year and winning the title for the first time, but we’ll be going out to win it next year rather than try to defend it.

It’s an incredibly tough competition, so everybody starts from scratch regardless of what’s gone before.

“We’ve lost a bunch of experience, as have a most of the other squads, so we have to re-establish the culture and we have to tailor our plans to suit the new skill set within the squad. That’s a challenge we are all looking forward to.”

The Hurricanes squad includes 31 players who took part in the 2016 campaign and will again be captained by hooker Dane Coles.

The Hurricanes Investec Super Rugby season begins in Japan against the Sunwolves on February 25 and includes eight home matches against Rebels, Highlanders, Waratahs, Brumbies, Stormers, Cheetahs, Chiefs and Crusaders.

Female bikers will be tearing it up this November at the Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park for the capital’s only relay mountain bike event for women.

Women of Dirt will be held on November 19 from 10am until 4pm and registrations are now open.

Wellington’s ‘down to earth’ women’s cycling club Revolve will run the six-hour relay.

Women of Dirt is now in its sixth year and remains a popular addition to Wellington’s racing calendar.

“The event has a unique atmosphere that combines the fun and excitement of racing with costumes, goodies and plenty of socialising,” Revolve club president Meagan Robertson said.

“Whether you’re looking for the win, or just keen to participate, this race caters for everyone.”

The course will take place on beginner and intermediate trails. Teams can consist of two, three or four people and team members can do as few or as many laps as they like.

Born out of a desire to see more women participating in mountain bike events, Women of Dirt is the perfect place to give racing a go in a supportive environment, Meagan said.

“When Revolve came up with the idea six years’ ago, the lack of women in mountain bike events was even more pronounced than it is today.

“As a result, the previous club members decided to start a women’s only relay race here in Wellington, which has been a resounding success.”

Multiple sponsors – including a number of local businesses – are donating prizes and Aro Valley bike shop Dirt Merchants will be providing mechanical support to riders on the day. Revolve will also be running a sausage sizzle, with all proceeds going to Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park.  Entries for individuals start at $45 and teams from $125 with discounts available for Revolve members. A local cup stacker impressed over the weekend at a regional speed stacking competition in Auckland. The 2016 Auckland Regional Sport Stacking Tournament was held on Saturday, November 5 at Murrays Bay Intermediate School gymnasium, North Shore with at least one potential record broken.

place in the tough competition.

The tournament saw over 30 competitors ranging from age eight to 49 gather from Dunedin, Wellington, Whanganui, Murupara, Hamilton and Auckland face off against each other. This included several members of our national team the New Zealand Black Stacks. Each stacker competed in three individual, two double and one team relay event.

Parker - a big fish?

It’s a shame Joseph Parker’s world title fight more than likely won’t be held in New Zealand.

Duco Events, who look after the 26-year-old’s interests were keen on having the fight against Mexican John Ruiz staged in Auckland in December.

For that, they wanted Government funding, which they submitted an application for.

However, as is often the way with public money, those people who take the spending of their taxes seriously got

up in arms about it and Duco withdrew the application due to the public outcry against it.

Duco believed New Zealand’s exposure to a global audience as well as tourist dollars generated, made it a worthwhile event for the government to help fund.

However, the court of public opinion disagreed.

To be honest, it’s doubtful it would be a money spinner for the Government.

World boxing is in a slump and has been for some time.

Interest from casual boxing

viewers has declined as has general interest.

However, that’s the reason the fight could have worked in New Zealand.

Make it a big fish event in a small pond. Get all of New Zealand behind Parker.

Give sports fans a once in a lifetime chance to go to a world title fight in their own backyard.

There’s also the hometown judging which could be handy too (wink, wink). It is boxing after all.

It now looks like the fight

will be held in America.

Parker is a business and Duco want a return on their asset.

Win or lose, a world title fight offers that opportunity.

I’ll get that pay per view, unlike the rest of Parker’s fights so far with their weak undercards and often abysmal opponents in the main event, it would be worth $40.

It’s a case of ‘watch this space’. Parker will need a bit of luck to get the job done, but at 26 he’s certainly special enough to give it a decent go.
