Dame Susan Devoy will be making a guest appearance at an upcoming meeting for the Wellington branch of the PanPacific South East Asia Women’s Association. Member of the association Marianne Bishop said Ms Devoy would be speaking to the meeting about her work and sharing her experiences and her vision. “We try to have inspirational female speakers at our meetings each month,” Marianne said.

Ms Devoy, DNZM, CBE is a former squash champion and current Race Relations Commissioner. She is also currently the director of Women Walking Ltd, a board member of the Sustainability Council of New Zealand and a member and former chair of the Halberg Trust. Marianne said she hoped to hear about how Ms Devoy got into her various roles and about her committee experiences. “She is not just a squash player, she is involved in a lot of other things as well,” Marianne said.

She said anyone was welcome to go along to the Johnsonville Community Centre at 10am on Saturday, April 16 to hear Ms Devoy speak. “We would like to encourage other women in the community to attend. “We thought it would be a good opportunity to get more members of the community coming along to learn something new and meet different people.” Marianne said she hoped the talk would encourage more women to reach their potential.

School students run Relay for Life Continued from page 1 Kay organised the fi rst Johnsonville School Relay for Life three years ago and said it was something she was hoping to run every year. After having to deal with a death in the family from cancer last year, Kay stressed the importance

of children learning about health. “We also do the slip, slop, slap and wrap education around sunburn.” Kay will also be taking part in the Relay for Life at Frank Kitts Park on Saturday, April 9 and said she hoped to raise $1000 for the Cancer Society

from the two events. “We have already raised $500 from the school Relay for Life,” she said. Kay said the kids had been excited about the event for a while. “They are very keen, they really enjoy taking part. “They have been building up to this for a week.”
