The knitters were surprised with the outcome saying they had never expected so many toys to be made. “It’s amazing what came out,” Eleanor said. The project was a learning curve for the whole group – some members had never made a Santa or a Rudolf before, while others were just learning to knit in the process. The craft group is a community based group which meets every Wednesday and keen knitters and sewers can join Nic Dempster with his painting: Public Hall, Khandallah anytime. School girls ‘Welcome Home’ refugees By Sharnahea Wilson

Welcome Home competition winners and runner up, Molly McCalman (left) Grace Masseurs and Samantha George-Neich, holding their interactive maps on ipads.

Fancy yourself as a portrait artist? You can have a go at the home of the country’s national collection in the New Zealand Portrait Gallery on the Wellington waterfront on Saturday. It’s free and the gallery will provide some materials and coffee from its neighbour Mojo from 1pm to 3pm. Local identities Ruth Gotlieb, Paul Eagle and Fran Wilde have posed at previous sessions. A competition for young people to create an interactive map to welcome refugees to their area was taken out by two local school girls. Grace Masseurs and Samantha George-Neich of Samuel Marsden Collegiate School won the Welcome Home Mapping Competition due to their innovative work on creating a map for refugees. Head of Humanities Fiona Craw-

ford received information about the competition and thought it was a great idea to get the students involved. All year nines, as well as one year ten class, made interactive maps over a period of four lessons for the New Zealand-wide competition. Fiona said she was particularly impressed with Grace and Samantha’s map. “They showed a lot of insight into the challenges refugee’s experience.

“They were very sensitive to what [the refugee’s] needs could be,” she said. The girls did some research into human rights and migration, as well as government impacts on migration. “Once a lot of attention was drawn to Syrian refugees, the year nines were very interested in getting involved,” Fiona said. The school found out one week ago that two of their pupils had taken out the competition.

Rotary tooted for tucker The Johnsonville Rotary Club had a successful “Toot for Tucker” collection with the Johnsonville Volunteer Fire Brigade to collect food items for those in need. On November 10 and 17 the Rotary collected food for families and individuals who are in need over the demanding holiday season. The Fire Truck led the way through Johnsonville and Churton Park with flashing lights and the siren to alert families on the routes that collectors were coming on foot or in tooting vehicles. Rotary member Michael Hodgen said there has been a wonderful response from people on the routes. “A wide variety of non- perish-

Seismic strengthening Ten heritage building owners will benefit from the latest round of Wellington City Council’s Built Heritage Incentive fund after their applications were approved last week. The Council’s Transport and Urban Development Committee approved the funding towards seismic strengthening work and conservation of ten buildings around the capital. This year the Built Heritage Incentive Fund was increased to $3 million to be distributed over three years toward conserving, restoring, protecting and caring for the heritage-listed buildings in the District Plan.

Home help for parents When a Karori mum was at home with her new born baby her friend went and cleaned her house, bringing along a masseuse, now that mum has decided to pay the kind act forward. Lucy Parkhill, mother of the now nearly two-year-old Oliver, has decided to start a business called Seraph, which she describes as a service “by parents for parents”. Lucy said as a new parent it is dif-

ficult to go out to appointments, so Seraph will bring the appointments to them. “We offer practical home help and pamper packages for families with a new baby. “Our team will help new parents with cleaning and laundry, or we can provide haircuts, massages, manicures and pedicures,” Lucy said. Seraph consists of a fully qualified team of mums who work as contractors, choosing their own hours to fit around their own families. “This gives our contractors their own independence and flexibility of work hours. “We have several people for each position so there will be a lot of flexibility around appointment times. “It’s a win-win situation for everyone,” Lucy said. The service also has a “twice the time” policy where the team will allow two hours for appointments that would usually be an hour long. “This will give the parents enough time to relax so if they need to feed their baby for example, they won’t be missing out on their appointment.” The team of mums will work all over the Wellington area and Lucy said she is excited to see how it goes. “I’m nervous but I am looking forward to helping new parents feel relaxed,” she said. Lucy said there will be vouchers available so the friends and families of new parents can treat them to a pamper package at home.  All services have a set price on the website – book or buy a voucher www.seraph.co.nz

Q&A

The birds and the bees Wellingtonian’s should get the opportunity to talk about cats, dogs, birds, bees, livestock and other animals in the city next year. The November 26 meeting of Wellington City Council’s Environment Committee will discuss the scope for reviews of the animal’s bylaw and dog policy. The policy and bylaw determine the requirements for keeping dogs and other animals. They aim to protect the public from nuisance, to maintain and promote public health and safety and to protect the welfare of animals. If approved by the committee, the reviews will scrutinise management the animals. Work on the reviews will start in the New Year – and a four-week public consultation will follow in May.

with writer Sophie Siers By Sharnahea Wilson

Sophie Siers who was born and raised in Ngaio has written a children’s book titled Allis the Little Tractor. This creative children’s story tells the tale of a how a little red tractor, which was put out of work and left under a tree, transforms back into the wonderful tractor she was. The story also features a young boy named Toby who helps Allis make this happen. Sophie was inspired by the farm she now lives on in the Hawkes Bay. The book is beautifully illustrated by Helen Kerridge who used acrylic on card to bring the story to life. Sophie has decided to donate $5 from every book sold to the Save the Children Foundation.

Where did you get the idea to write the book? From my lovely little tractor sitting under the tree outside. Every time I walked past her I thought she must be sad she isn't able to help on the farm!

Have you written a children's book before? No, but I thought about it a lot!

How long did it take you to write the story?

I've been working on it since December last year.

The idea for the walking- bus 50 Homewood Avenue, Karori A walking bus making its way to Amesbury school early to be treated to warm milo and special giveaways.

came earlier this year when Angela decided her family needed to get outdoors more. “We needed to commit to walking to school more, so I thought why not

have a walking bus,” she said. Angela decided what routes the bus would take while sitting in a local café with another mum looking at the Wellington City Council map of Churton Park. “We mapped out three routes that would encapsulate most of the families,” Angela said. Angela explained how the walking bus has been a great way to connect the community around the school. “I have met a lot of new parents through the walking bus and kids have had the chance to meet fellow pupils of Amesbury School that live on the same street.”

Parents who want to be involved in these walks put themselves into the roster as the service is based on demand and availability. Angela said the bus is there for everyone, not just for the children whose parents chaperone. “Some parents are busy and unable to roster themselves on in the mornings but their children are still very welcome to join the bus.” Angela said the parents have received a lot of support from the Wellington City Council who provides giveaways for walking bus members each week, including wristbands, pencil kits, wet weather

covers for school bags and bike-wise gears. Amesbury School Principal Lesley Murrihy said the bus is a wonderful idea. “It is really exciting to see kids walking to school and enjoying the air and sunshine, saving carbon emissions and helping build a community. “Back in the day people used to look out for each other’s kids – it was more of a collective community,” she said. The group is now thinking of making a biking bus where students can bike to school safely as a group.

An eight-year-old from St Benedict’s school has impressed the community by gaining the top mark in a recent University of New South Wales maths exam. Carl Novilla sat the country-wide exam which is set to test the mathematical skills of children from year’s four to eight. The exam is optional and Carl chose to participate in it as maths is his favourite subject. Carl said he normally finds maths easy but he felt nervous heading into the exam. “I felt nervous before it but once I was in there and started the questions it was okay,” he said. Carl gained the top mark by getting 37 out of 40 questions right – finishing in the 90th percentile. Gillian Higgins, Carl’s teacher, wasn’t too shocked to find out Carl had gained the top mark. “I was surprised because it is amazing but at the same time I wasn’t sur-

prised because I know he is incredibly talented at maths. “I’m very proud of him,” she said. Gillian explained how Carl is already learning things that are above his age group, such as decimal points, which are more challenging but he enjoys it. “He is also good at helping other children and explaining things to them, it really shows that he knows how to do everything,” she said. Carl is part of the school’s Mathmagician’s Club where the syndicate is split into ability levels for problem solving. Carl works with the older kids on these problems so he is able to take on more of a challenge, Gillian said. The young maths whiz said he practices at home with his parents and helps out his little brother with his maths homework. Gillian said she will look for some extra challenges next year to suit Carl’s mathematical talents.

A man and his granddaughter sign the star car in Johnsonville Mall to support City Mission.

Star car has first outing This Christmas, The Wellington City Mission is bringing a bit of Hollywood to Wellington’s waterfront. A star-covered car is making its way around the region to promote the Wellington City Mission’s ‘Christmas Star Appeal’. The car made its first outing in Johnsonville Mall and proved popular with many people donating to City Mission in order to sign it. As well as including regular events, this year’s appeal will include the exciting new activity, the ‘Christmas Walk of Fame’. The Christmas Walk of Fame will include a Hollywood Walk of Fame styled art installation on the Wellington waterfront outside Te Papa from December 4 to 18. By making a donation, an individual, group, or business can get their name or logo on a star and each star will represent a family being supported this Christmas by The Mission’s services – including food parcel assistance, in-home social work, and

budgeting advice. Wellington City Mission’s chief executive Michelle Branney said the Mission aimed to sell 500 stars. “At the Mission we experience Christmas in all its intensity. “Throughout the months of November and December, we do our best to ensure that the goodwill of the season is shared among those who may find this the hardest time of the year. “Christmas can cause setbacks for parents who are struggling to provide, and amplify feelings of isolation for those who feel lonely at this time of year.” Last November and December, The Mission was able to give out over 1300 food parcels and 7000 gifts throughout Greater Wellington.  For more information on The Mission’s Christmas fundraisers, head to www. christmasstar.co.nz

A taste of the garden trail

St John of God CEO Steve Berry, resident Evelyn Churchill and Northern regional manager Debbie Brinsdon celebrate in style. PHOTO: Sharnahea Wilson

St John of God officially permanent By Sharnahea Wilson

The weekend saw another successful Karori Lions Super Garden Trail. Twelve outstanding gardens including Zealandia were available for keen gardeners to view. The trail ran from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday and people with a ticket were able to go around and take a look at each garden at their leisure. The gardens included everything from vintage, cottage-style gardens to more contemporary large-scale gardens. All proceeds from this year’s trail will go towards building new facilities for Zealandia.

A St John of God blessing ceremony was held last week to celebrate the organisation officially buying the Karori building. The St John of God Hauora Trust provides live-in and visiting services for people aged 18 to 65 living with a physical or neurological disability. A crowd of 120 people, including friends and family of St John of God residents, turned out to celebrate the occasion. The ceremony included speeches from his Eminence Cardinal John A Dew DD Archbishop of Wellington, and residents Evelyn Churchill and David Pearman. They also held a blessing ceremony and had drinks and nibbles for residents and visitors to enjoy. The organisations CEO Steve Berry said they had been leasing the building since 2010, but it was proving unsustainable. “We needed a more permanent solution, so we struck a deal with the former landlord and bought the building,” he said. Northern regional manager of health and ability services Debbie Brinsdon said she

is glad they now own the building and can begin to make renovations. Debbie said they work with a can-do attitude. “It is about what they can do, not what they can’t do. “One resident went sky-diving,” she said. Evelyn Churchill who is one of the original residents of St John of God put her hand up to speak at the celebrations. “It was a nice opportunity to get our name out there,” she said. Evelyn said she is happy St John of God now owns the building where she resides. “It’s a security blanket; I know that I will be here for years to come.” Steve said the organisations’ core values are justice, hospitality, compassion and respect. St John of God has another residence in Christchurch which was established in 2008, and is looking at building flats for people with disabilities who are more independent. “We will try to create a home-like environment as much as possible,” he said.

Petone to Grenada link welcome news Wellingtonians are set to reap the benefits of the now confirmed Petone to Grenada Link Road. The New Zealand Transport Agency decision on the preferred route for the road is an important step forward in regional transport planning and settles the preferred route, said Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown. “The Petone to Grenada link is an important connection between the Hutt Valley and Seaview with Wellington’s northern suburbs and beyond. “We’re pleased that unnecessary controversy over connections with State Highway One will not delay its implementation,” she said. The link will greatly facilitate new mixed-use development of the ‘Northern Growth Area’ known as Lincolnshire Farms. “I’m keen to see a new bus route run between Tawa and the Hutt Valley from the day the link is opened as unanimously agreed by our Council,” Mayor WadeBrown said. Chair of the Transport and Urban Development Committee Councillor Andy Foster said the link will provide a signifi-

cant benefit with reduced traffic pressure on the Ngauranga Gorge and a shorter link between the Hutt Valley and the Porirua – North Wellington communities. “The decision gives more certainty to communities that were potentially affected by the roading proposal. “The route announced today will be great news for Takapu Valley and Tawa residents. “There will be no widening of the motorway through Tawa and no new road through Takapu Valley,” he said. “Council voted to support the link road but was against both the extra options and we are delighted with NZTA’s decision. “NZTA have concluded they do not need either of the Tawa or Takapu options and any additional future traffic demand can be managed. “We can now look forward to working with the NZTA and local communities as we go through the consenting process,” he said. Councillor Foster said the PetoneGranada link has been agreed in principle for a long time and now there is some real action with physical work planned to begin in 2019.

That’s what they say and there’s really no better way to see Wellington than from on board the Dominion Post East by West Ferries! The harbour ferries run from their superb central waterfront location at Queens Wharf in front of their ticket office in the Meridian Building. There are up to 16 return sailings everyday out to Days Bay & Matiu Somes Island. In the weekends and public holidays (fine

weather permitting), the ferries also run Harbour Explorer Tours calling in at Petone, Matiu Somes Island, Days Bay, Seatoun & Queens Wharf. These trips are very popular and quickly are becoming a ‘must do’ for visitors to the capital! The catamaran ferries carry up to 99 passengers and have a fantastic viewing from their open top decks. Inside the main cabin you can buy coffee, tea,

snacks and icecreams as well as beer and wine from the bar onboard. The ferries are also available for evening charters with a range of different options. You won’t find friendlier crew than on the ferries, nothings a problem. Enjoy a cruise We offer you memorable cruising on the beautiful Whanganui River. Our PS Waimarie is truly New Zealand’s premier Heritage experience. Feel the history as our ancestors plied the Whanganui River aboard Paddle steamer Waimarie, New Zealand’s last true paddle steamer (est.1900), still coal fired and still steam powered. On board you will find covered and open decks, comfortable saloons, licensed bar and cafe. Meet the legendary Mr Alexander Hatrick, original owner of this magnificent old

lady. Send a pigeon message back to the Riverboat Centre. Stoke the fire that heats the boiler to drive the two great paddle wheels. View the pictorial screenings of life on the Whanganui River and enjoy tea, coffee, a beer or a wine as you cruise, surrounded by true New Zealand Heritage. Even the crew are dressed for the occasion. Please contact us with your personal requirements so that we can offer you our very affordable pricing options.

RIVER COTTAGE is situated in a secluded spot well away from busy roads – with only the sounds of nature to break the silence. Enjoy a few hours on the verandah or just soak up the ambience inside. A great place

to relax and unwind amongst the beauty of the bush and bordering the Ohau River, River Cottage is in the heart of the Horowhenua District - 100kms north of Wellington and 50km south of Palmerston North.

River Cottage - Ohau

Experience the Whanganui River on NZ’s only coal-fired

PADDLE STEAMER PS Waimarie departs 11am daily from the Waimarie Centre & Museum Phone 06 368 7651, mobile 027 828 9471 292 Gladstone Rd, Levin email: ngarara@xtra.co.nz www.ohaurivercottage.co.nz

Having some fun, swimming and playing at the beach, a slow river cruise and a family picnic? Throw in some sport, some culture and some V8 noise and excitement? Relax at a café with a coffee and friends before strolling along a boulevard of boutique shopping? Where’s the one place you can find all of this without having to move too far? Whanganui. Really. Whanganui. Whanganui is a unique treasure in the North Island having shared its natural beauty and many attractions with settlers from over 175 years ago. Whanganui’s summer is full of events to spice up the lazy days – the world famous Cemetery Circuit Motorcycle Street Races, judged NZ’s best established regional event for 2015 is held on Boxing Day every year and the V8 Jet Sprint Championships thunder around a purpose built water track at Shelterview on the following day.

Whanganui’s Vintage Weekend kicks off for Wellington’s Anniversary Weekend. From street festivals, riverside entertainment, classic and vintage cars, and a boundless banquet held in the main street there’s plenty to see and do. If your family is all outdoors and action then head for a river kayak or jet boat experience, mountain biking trails or out to Bushy Park Sanctuary to see an enormous and ancient Rata tree. Explore the stars and Saturn from the Ward Observatory on a Friday night. Try a spot of fishing on the banks of the Whanganui River or sail on the Waimarie paddle steamer for a settler’s view of river life. For a few laid back options include the Whanganui Regional Museum, a computer clubhouse, a trip in the underground elevator built to travel 66 metres inside a hill or learn some glass blowing techniques. Visitors come for many reasons but whatever these might be it’s a brilliant place for a family visit.

Whanganui is big enough to entertain and small enough to keep it real. Enjoy arts, music, the landscape and our rich heritage.

A review of the cricket week There were varying results for the local teams in the Ewen Chatfield Cup over the weekend. Johnsonville managed to bowl Eastern Suburbs out cheaply, with the hosts only managing 94 all out. The reply had some fumbles but Johnsonville managed to chase down the total in the thirty-third over. Onslow just held off Petone Riverside defending 186 to win by only six runs. Karori had a tough time chasing down 159 from Hutt District, leaving it until the final over to claim a one-wicket victory.

Softball this week

In Premier One men’s softball, the Johnsonville Blue Jays will take on Hutt City United at Haitaitai Park. The game begins at 3.30pm. In the women’s Premier One side, Johnsonville/Newlands take on Poneke Kilbirnie at Alex Moore Park, with the first pitch at 3.30pm. In Men’s Premier Two Green, The Johnsonville Bombers will play the Hutt Valley Demons at Taita Drive at 3.30pm. There is a double header in Premier Two Black, The Johnsonville Billy Goats will be playing Hutt City United on Saturday begining at 1.30pm at Haitaitai Park, and will then play Poneke Kilbirnie Red on Sunday at Alex Moore Park. The Sunday game will begin at 2pm.

In Prospect Terrace a house was entered, possibly through an insecure rear door and a laptop computer was stolen. In Ironside Road a weed-eater left in an unlocked porch was stolen. A house in Middleton Road was broken into via a smashed lounge window and vandalised. A silver Nissan station wagon parked on the street overnight in Kitchener Terrace had its rear registration plate stolen. Also in Kitchener Terrace a black Holden hatchback had its rear registration plate stolen. A red Holden Commodore station wagon parked during the day on the Burma Road had its left rear wheel stolen. A silver Kea trailer was stolen from Lyndfield Lane.

New Zealand loses another rugby legend By Sharnahea Wilson

A remembrance book for the great former All Black Jonah Lomu is being displayed in the office of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union for Wellington fans to pay their respects. The book was placed there last Wednesday following the announcement of the rugby legends death. Lomu died at his home in Auckland last Wednesday after returning home from watching the Rugby World Cup in England. The 40-year-old suffered from a seri-

ous long-term kidney disease. Ezra Iupeli of the New Zealand Rugby Institute said Thursday was a busy day with about 60 Lomu fans coming through to sign the book, writing down their favourite memories of him. “We have had a whole range of people come through; it has been a wide demographic,” said Ezra who pointed out the range of fans Lomu had gained over the years. Ezra said he was lucky enough to meet the legend himself, explaining how he was very “star struck”. “The first time I met him I was work-

ing in a hotel where we were taught to be very professional when well-known people came in. “But it was pretty hard when Jonah Lomu walked past and said hi to us,” he said. Ezra said the news was rough after New Zealand had already lost another former All Black, Jerry Collins, who New Zealand Rugby also had a condolence book for. The book filled with memories and tributes will be given to Jonah Lomu’s family by a New Zealand Rugby representative at Lomu’s funeral.
