This week, Colmar Brunton released the results of its annual ‘Brands I Love’ survey and while the All Blacks have jumped 7 per cent to be the country’s second most loved brand for 2015, Whittaker’s comfortably held on to the top spot. Tip Top, Air New Zealand and Pineapple Lumps all helped round out the top five most loved brands.

PRODUCTION SPACE: Barbara Hickey spent much of her time overlooking the ocean while creating her work of art. Photo: Sam Whittle

A love for the ocean inspired Kilbirnie resident Barbara Hickey to create her finalist-placing piece in the World of Wearable Arts competition this year. Barbara’s piece will be shown in the children’s section of the competition and the theme for this year is “imaginary friends.” The dress created for Barbara’s imaginary friend involved thousands of New Zealand seashells and a lot of patience. “I am very keen on the environment. It is where most of my observations come from,” she says. The seamstress says she believes what she created is unique. “Over the years I have got more of an appreciation for how hard it is to get in. But mine is an unusual use of materials, which is my point [of difference]. “The thing is you just do your best.” Barbara entered the competition in 2011 and was selected as a finalist, however, she says she doesn’t enter every year because of timing. “It’s a matter of what else is going on. And for me, having the ideas and time has to come together this year. It just occurred to me that I could make something using the shells I had.” She says creating a piece for WOW is “pretty intense”, but worth it to see it on stage. “If it goes badly wrong its game over. I was doing something from scratch, so there was a lot of experimenting.” .

Donating to animals in need A group of pre-schoolers put their skills to good use in the kitchen and made a generous donation to a deserving charity earlier this week. The kids from South Wellington Montessori School donated $200 to the SPCA after spending a day making and decorating cupcakes for the shelter’s annual Cupcake Day fundraiser last month. They then sold their creations to parents at a pop-up cake shop at the centre. All the hard work paid off on Monday, when the group of 20 pre-schoolers had a visit from some furry friends from the animal shelter. Five-year-old Rory Sengelow, the oldest student at the school, presented the donation to education officer Matthew Mitchell and volunteer Alix Gurau. Children then had the chance to meet and play with Usher the rabbit and Jaden the puppy. Teacher Sandra Aubrey explained that as well as fundraising for a worthwhile cause, the students were taught how to care for animals and about the role the SPCA played in the community.
