JUNIORS AMONG THE MEDALS
KNOCKING EM OVER: Dayna Haylock and Kieran Davis, from Kapiti Tenpin, did very well at the New Zealand junior and youth tenpin bowling championships held at Pins, Waitakere. Both bowled in their own division, junior, as well as competing in the youth division. Dayna, the 2014 junior and youth girls national champion, won eight medals, and Kieran, the junior boys national champion as well as runner up in the youth all events, won nine medals. Roger Tucker, from Waikanae, was part of the New Zealand men’s team which won the men as well as combined team title at the 53rd Australian adult tenpin bowling championship. Each Australian states sends a four-strong men’s and women’s team to the challenge and New Zealand is allowed to enter “to make up the numbers,’ Tucker jokily says. The championship was held at Tenpin City Bowl, Lidcombe, Sydney, from October 10-17. Nine four-strong men’s and women’s teams played a mix of 18 singles, doubles and combined games. “It’s the first time we have won the men’s title but the second time for the combined title,” Tucker said. He also set a tournament record of 298 [the maximum you can get is 300]. “With the last ball I got eight down not 10.” And he won the doubles with Wellington bowler Greg Nicolas. The four-strong New Zealand women’s team, which included Kapiti Tenpin manager Ivena Heald, achieved bronze in the
women’s competition as well as winning the combined title with the men. Heald also won silver in the doubles with Auckland bowler Cushla Burns. Heald, from Lower Hutt, was happy with her achievement “considering I didn’t train that much and I had a cataract done in my left eye”. Tucker and Heald were both selected in the tournament’s allstar team as well. Both are now targeting the Asian zone championships in Manila in November. Tucker, who took up ten pin bowling while in Singapore with the army in the 1970s, said he enjoyed the sport for a number of reasons. “It’s a sport where you play yourself. There’s a great social aspect. You can play it anyday and also the ball comes back to you — not like golf.” It was also a great sport for children too, he said. “Dayna Haylock is the under 17 and under 21 national champion and Kieran Davis is the national under 17 champion.” Tucker is ranked about the third best in the New Zealand men’s division and Heald is the reigning woman’s champion.
PENTANQUE PLAYERS DESCEND ON KAPITI Kapiti Petanque Club hosted the Wellington Regional Doubles Championships with 56 players coming from the area south of Wanganui and Masterton. On Saturday, each pair played five games against randomly drawn opposition and this identified the ranking of the teams. On Sunday the top 16 teams played in four pools of four teams. Each team played the other three teams in the pool with the top two from each pool playing in a knockout format for the championship trophy. The teams that came third and fourth in each pool played in a similar format for the plate. Teams that came 17th to 22nd played each other to determine the winner of the bowl and the remaining eight teams played for the bowl consolation. Despite the early predictions of horrendous weather for the whole weekend, Kapiti turned on excellent conditions with players reaching for sunblock one moment and rainwear the next to cope with the odd shower. After two days of hard fought play, the winners of the trophy were Michael Rocks (Khandallah) and Myles Cowper (Hataitai) who retained the trophy they won last year. They overcame Nicolas

In the plate, the winners were Pete Hamilton (Wanganui East) and Graeme Morris (Masterton) who beat Annick Le Guen (Kapiti) and Morgan Choveaux (Khandallah), in a close win, 13-11. The bowl was won by Clair and Brian Bradburn of Silverstream
and the bowl consolation was won by Don Thompson and Ian Bailey of Manawatu. Also taking place over the weekend was a shooting competition and the final was between Michael Rocks and Christine Strichen (Wanganui East). In a very successful weekend for Michael Rocks, he retained the shooting trophy he won last year.
