Conference for Earth builders Contemplating building an environmentally sustainable home? Keen to learn more about natural building? If so this conference will be of interest to you. This Labour Weekend the Earth Building Association of New Zealand is holding its annual national conference here in Kapiti. The hallmark of an EBANZ conference is affordability. This year’s theme is designing and building naturally and promises to be a great opportunity for locals to meet likeminded people from around New Zealand — owner builders, experienced builders and professionals alike. Enjoy a leisurely coach tour around Kapiti over two days and visit a range of natural homes — straw bale, rammed earth, adobe brick, earth covered ferro-cement and examples of more conventional architecture embracing elements of natural building. Listen to presentations on a range of natural building subjects. Take in practical

demonstrations on rammed earth construction, homemade natural paints and strength testing adobe bricks to achieve code compliance. You’ll be meeting people who’ve built or refurbished their own natural homes. Question our panel of natural building experts and get their views on your ideas — two great ways of growing your knowledge on natural home design and building with natural materials. The event is being held at El Rancho in Waikanae over Saturday and Sunday of Labour weekend and for those interested an optional tour on Monday through to Wellington is planned. ■ To find out more about the weekend, to register or to book accommodation, go to www.earthbuilding.org.nz, or www.facebook.com/earthbuilding, or call John or Diane locally on 04 905 3307.

School gala last for principal This month’s Paraparaumu Beach School Spring Gala will be a special one for principal Keith Lambert, as his last major fundraising event with the school. After 21 years, Mr Lambert is leaving his role, and welcoming replacement Jess Ward. Gala committee member Angela Morris said the school community wants to make this year’s gala the most memorable for Mr Lambert, with an abundance of great food and entertainment, and exciting outdoor activities. “We thought it was better not to subject him to Dunk-a-Teacher, so instead, the children hope to see Mr

Lambert revving up on a Harley Davidson, clinging to the Spiderman Sticky Wall, or taking a joyride over the school in a helicopter, courtesy of Heliworx,” she said. “Mr Lambert’s successor, who has already been affectionately crowned by students as the ‘Princessapal’, might also be spotted on the day, bouncing down the giant slide, or even leading the pack at MilitaryFit. “We wonder if she will be wearing her tiara.” Paraparaumu Beach School Gala welcomes everyone for a day of fun on Saturday October 18, from 11am to 3pm, at the school grounds.
